DeKalb County Farm Stroll
Bountiful Blessings Farm Produce ● 15565 McGirr Road, Hinckley, IL 60520
Jeff and Kim Wielert, along with Jeff’s parents, Allan and Bette, started raising
farm fresh produce in 2011 and are now producing fruits and vegetables on 22
acres. Expect many varieties of tomatoes and sweet, hot, and specialty peppers,
along with herbs, sweet corn, beans, potatoes, cucumbers, and squash. You’ll
also find jams, jellies, salsas, popcorn, and cooking beans. Learn about their
approach to low-input integrated pest management and how they prepare to
supply CSA shares for 16+ weeks!
Buchholz Dairy ● 18347 Willrett Road, Malta, IL 60150
Have you ever seen a cow-milking robot? Well, Buchholz Dairy is a family farm
that built a robotic voluntary milking system so that the next generation could
come back to the farm. The Holstein cows are able to come and get milked when
they please, which makes them calm and comfortable. The Buchholz Farm also
raises a diverse rotation of corn, soybeans, wheat, alfalfa, and peas for Del Monte.
Plus, they are starting an aquaculture venture to raise shrimp indoors! Come
meet our cows, calves, robots, shrimp, and young farmers.
DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association ● 111 South Second Street,
Suite 204, DeKalb, IL 60115
DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association (DAAHA) is a museum preserving
and sharing the history of agricultural innovations and their widespread impacts.
Explore exhibits on the reaper trial of the century involving Abraham Lincoln and
the story of Charlie Gunn and early corn hybridizer. Find out what planter wires
and planter plates are. Admission to the museum is free. Located in downtown
DeKalb on the second floor of the Nehring Center we are near a variety of
restaurants and offer the amenities of bathrooms and drinking water.
Heatherhope Farm ● 22417 Airport Road, Sycamore, IL 60178
On Heatherhope Farm, Connie and John Seraphine run their farm much as
shepherds in the hills of Great Britain– with the help of dedicated, hardworking
Border Collie sheepdogs. Come see their flock of North Country Cheviot sheep with
19 young lambs. Frodo and Bilbo, the Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs live with
and protect the flock, and a team of eight herding dogs move and manage the
sheep when necessary. Snacks and beverages will be available for free-will
donations. Feel free to bring a lunch for a picnic. Tours and talks will be ongoing,
and herding demos will be offered at 11:30am; 1:00pm, 2:30pm and 4:00pm.
Honey Hill Orchard ● 11747 Waterman Road, Waterman, IL 60556
Honey Hill Orchard is a family-owned and operated orchard that was started as a
hobby in 1965. Today, the original orchard location has 2,100 apple trees, with
an additional 500 trees at a second farm location. What started out as a simple
farm stand has grown to include pick your own apples, raspberries, and
pumpkins, honey from our beehives, fresh pressed apple cider, a bakery, the
Apple Barn Country Store and family activities. 30 minute hayride tours of the
orchard will be offered at 11:30, 12:30. 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30. Picnic tables will be
available for anyone who wants to bring a picnic lunch.
Jonamac Orchard ● 19412 Shabbona Road, Malta, IL 60150
At Jonamac Orchard, three generations of the McArtor Family manage over 15,000
trees and three dozen varieties of apples to create a destination for fall family
fun. From pruning to pollinating to propagating, come learn about all the behindthe-scenes effort that goes into making your family’s “pick-your-own” experience
something to remember. Kids can play in the barnyard play area (corn bin is not
yet filled!) or jump on the jumping pillow. For the adults, we will be having a wine
tasting featuring our apple wines. We will also have fresh popped Kettle Corn, and
drinks for sale. Orchard tours are every half hour starting at 11:30 a.m.
That little crossword-puzzle design next to each farm name is actually a QR code. On your smartphone, use a QR reader
or barcode scanner app to scan the QR code, and your smartphone will lead you right to that farm using Google Maps!
Give it a try! And don’t forget to turn in your completed Farm Stroll Passport for a chance to win a prize!
Precious pastures ● 387 S. Malta Road, Rochelle, IL 61068
Emily and Claire Plapp started showing dairy calves as a 4-H project. Fast-forward
a few years, and they are milking two dozen Jersey and Guernsey cows that
receive organic oats and hay and graze on grassy pasture (Dad, Adrian, also helps
out when school gets in the way). They sell unpasteurized, non-homogenized
milk right there on the farm, but don’t forget to bring your own container! Stop
by and see the dairy, and learn all the great things about Jersey and Guernsey
milk.
Theis Farm ● 6N953 County Line Road, Maple Park, IL 60151
At Theis Farm Market, we provide quality farm-fresh produce on a
multigenerational family farm with a 100-year-old barn, a working windmill, and
even an authentic outhouse. Mid-summer crops include sweet corn, green
beans, summer squash, raspberries, and dozens of varieties of field-grown
tomatoes. Get a tour of the farm and the crops in the field, get to know the
pollinators in our flowers and try the delicious honey fresh from our own hives.
The Farmer’s Garden CSA ● 8091 S Mayfield Road, DeKalb, IL 60115
Owned and operated by Farmer Wayne, the Farmers Garden is a small fruit and
vegetable enterprise driven by nature and Community-Supported Agriculture
(CSA). Practicing biological soil management, with no herbicides or pesticides
ever, CSA subscribers receive a weekly share of fruits, vegetables, and herbs
(many of which are heirloom varieties) picked at their peak of flavor. Come
experience how we promote community in the soil and our society, see a demo
on urban beekeeping from Chicago’s Westside Bee Boys, and learn how to cook
with your CSA share as part of a paleo diet with Marla Sarris.
Waterman Winery & Vineyards ● 11582 Waterman Road, Waterman, IL 60556
Waterman Winery & Vineyards is located on a functioning grain farm. Tour an
antique barn with many farm related items and our wine fermenting tanks.
Compare an antique tractor with a GPS guided 12 wheeler. See a 1930 pickup
truck next to a 2015 pickup. Climb into a combine. Take selfies wherever!
Sample our award winning wine grown, fermented, and bottled on-site. Weather
permitting, enjoy a rack ride to our sustainable vineyard at 11:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m.
Wessels Family Farm ● 7015 Minnegan Road, Waterman, IL 60556
In addition to growing conventional row crops, Rob and Teri Wessels have
diversified their operation to include summer and fall produce, specializing in
sweet corn! They also sell seasonal décor, like gourds and pumpkins, as well as
Christmas trees. Come compare the technology used to grow and market field
corn and soybeans vs. sweet corn and tomatoes, and learn how this farm family
gets it all done! Guided tours will be available and sweet corn should be ready to
take home!
You Pick Berries ● 30683 Lanan Road, Kingston, IL 60145
Gathering and harvesting is an experience that seems to be part of our human
nature. At You Pick Berries, we strive to give you the simple peace and pleasure
of picking berries at the peak of their natural goodness. Owner Christine Ewald
will give guided tours at 12:00 and 2:00. You Pick Berries Bee Keeper, Tom
Montavon, (Charter Grove Honey) will be present for a “Bee Talk” at 1:00 and
3:00. Honey tasting and sales will be available. Red Raspberries will be ready for
picking. Berry sales are transacted using a self-service honor system.
