International students who intend to study at Southern
Federal University are strongly recommended to take
the Foundation Course which is a one-year
preparatory course. Russian Language practice is the
core of the Foundation Course. The content of the
Foundation Program is relevant to the degree program
which you will take. The course consists of:

General Russian language course


Specialized Russian language course (depends on the study program chosen)
Training in humanities, economic and natural sciences
Students are taught Russian language in small groups of 8; other subjects - in groups of 12
persons. Students have 2-3 lessons a day five days a week. At the end of the academic year all
the students take exams in the Russian language (First level certificate) and in the majors. Upon
successful completion they’ll be awarded the certificate. This certificate is essential for
admission.

Academic Year
In Russian universities, the academic year lasts for 36 weeks and consists of 2 semesters –
autumn and spring semester. The academic year starts in early September and finishes in late
June. The fall semester lasts from 1 September until 20 December, followed by a 5-week winter
examination session. The spring semester lasts from 7 February until 20 May, followed by a 5week spring examination session. Winter vacations start after the winter session is over and last
10 days. Summer vacations start after the summer session is over and traditionally last two
months, but one of these two can be devoted to an internship.
Workload and Instruction
1 academic semester = 30 ECTS credit units
1 academic year = 60 ECTS credit units
The extent and method of instruction vary. Technical
courses usually have a larger proportion of scheduled
hours, while courses in the social sciences and arts
contain fewer scheduled hours, allowing the students to
devote most of their time to active self-instruction.
There are lectures with several dozens of students
present and smaller seminars where students are expected to take an active part in discussions
and express their own views. Classes, with groups of 10-30 students, also allow for direct contact
and provide a scope for discussion with the teacher. Training is also conducted through
laboratory work, independent or group project work.
Since 2006 SFedU has been carrying out the Program
of interdisciplinary individual liberal arts education –
MIGO – an innovative educational project aimed at
the perfection of the study process, its
individualization and implementation of flexible study
models into educational practice. This program
provides an opportunity to train specialists possessing
a unique combination of competences, for example,
blending knowledge in Information Technologies with
skills of editing and design or combining knowledge
in engineering, economics and law.
Alongside with a Bachelor or a Master program’s workload, graduates also complete an
individual study program which includes a wide range of disciplines aimed at enlarging their
intellectual horizons.
Credits and Grading
SFedU, as well as other educational institutions in
Russia, employs a five-grade system of assessment.
Student progress is assessed as excellent – “5”, good –
“4”, satisfactory – “3”, unsatisfactory – “2” and just “1”
(the lowest). There are also pass/fail exams. Along with
that, there is a system of progress assessment in terms of
credits according to the ECTS system.
Examinations
Student performance is assessed by means of ongoing assessment and examination sessions.
Ongoing assessment takes place throughout the semester in the form of tests, essays, etc.
Examination sessions occur twice a year, in winter (as a rule, December-January) and in summer
(as a rule, May-June), and consist of exams and pass-fail tests. Traditionally, oral exams prevail
in Russia, but Russian universities are currently trying to increase the number of written exams
to keep in line with the international practice (especially if it concerns the internationally
accredited study programs or double diploma programs).

City Transportation
Public transport in Rostov-on-Don includes buses,
trolleybuses, trams, and marshrutkas (routed cabs).
The in-city public transportation system runs to
almost every corner of the city. The buses do not
run on schedules but during working hours arrive
constantly (no more than 10 minutes wait) and at
night run until midnight. Buses have route maps
inside the cabin. You must enter the bus (tram,
trolleybus) through the front door and immediately
pay the driver (15 rubles for buses, 13 rubles for
trams and trolleybuses) and exit the bus through one of the other doors. There is a loud speaking
system in some buses that announces the stops. One trip in marshrutka (vans that typically run
the same route as buses) costs 17 rubles; you pay the driver when you exit. They go faster than
buses, they stop at your request along the route and some routes are available that are not
available by bus. Unlike a bus, you must request a stop because they will not necessarily stop at
each bus-stop.
Taxis are also available anywhere in the city and
are the most expensive option. The best prices are
available by phone (a wait of as long as from 10 to
30 minutes is typical). Hailing a taxi is more
expensive but the price is negotiable. Taxis found
at train stations or airports can be extremely
expensive. Private taxis (gypsy cabs) are also
available but they can be very dangerous to use.

Money, Banks, Credit Cards Services
The official Russian Currency is the Ruble and the Kopek. One ruble = 100 kopek. Credit and
debit cards are accepted for most purchases in shopping malls, department stores, big
supermarkets, restaurants and cafés. But Russian economy is still cash-based, that is why you
should be ready to pay in cash in shops, small cafes
and markets.
All currency exchanges accept US Dollars and
Euros and will usually give an exchange rate close
to that established by the Central Russian Bank.
Russian Law allows entrants to bring no more than
$ 10 000 in cash.
ATMs are available nearly everywhere in Russia
and are open all the time. The disadvantages of
ATMs are that they offer a lower exchange rate that
a hard currency exchange, the Russian bank charges a service fee ($ 2.00) and your bank may
have a daily withdraw limit (in Russia it is 50.000 rubles). If you plan to use your ATM card,
you should inform your bank before leaving the country, as out of country ATM usage may
cause your bank to shut off that card. Among the most reliable Russian ATMs are those of
Sberbank, which is the largest bank in Russia, its branches can be found everywhere, and those
of Center-Invest Bank.
Telephone
International code of Russia - +7, Rostov area code – 863. Intra-city telephone service is free
from a land line to another land line and omit the Rostov area code. Pay phones will only take
phone cards, which are available in kiosks, banks, telephone offices and gas stations.
Reliable cell phone service is available through MTS, Beeline, Megaphone and Tele2. Set-up
costs vary depending on the cell phone chosen, from 1000 rubles to 20.000 rubles, including a
new phone, a sim-card (a card which essentially determines your plan and your number) and the
first payment. You can set up service at a cell phone company office or at the stores such as
Svyaznoi or Evroset, all of which will have a wide range of cell phones and plans. Four
companies offer various plans, which cater to those interested in calling internationally.
Generally, the plans are pay-as-you-go, meaning you can add money to your telephone at any
time and virtually anywhere.
Telegraph services a week are offered 24 hours a day 7 days a week at Budyonnovsky Avenue,

Russian Cuisine
Original and varied, Russian cuisine is famous for exotic soups, such as cabbage schi and
solyanka, which is made of assorted meats. Russians are great lovers of pelmeni, small Siberian
meat pies boiled in broth.
Every housewife of any experience has her own recipes for pies, pickles, and sauerkraut. Even
more varied is the choice of recipes for mushrooms, one of the most abundant and nourishing
gifts of our woods. They are fried, pickled, salted, boiled and what not.
“No dinner without bread,” goes the Russian saying. Wheat loaves have dozens of varieties. As
to rye bread, Russians eat more of it than any other nation in the world—a peculiarity of the
Russian diet.
Of our folk soft drinks, kvass is the best-known. Made of brown bread or malted rye flour, it
goes down best on a sultry summer day. If you add to it some chopped-up meat and vegetables,
you get okroshka, an exquisite cold soup.

LIVING IN TAGANROG
Taganrog is an important research, cultural and industrial center in Southern Russia.
Taganrog is situated on the shore of the Azov Sea
about 45 miles from Rostov-on-Don. As the
birthplace of Anton Chekhov, Taganrog offers
remarkable sites dedicated to the years of
childhood and youth of the Russian playwright and
short-story writer.
There are many things that remind of him in the
city: the small house where he was born, the high
school where he studied, his father's shop where he
had to serve, and, of course, those quiet streets and
mansions which today are associated with the past.
Main tourist attractions:
Birth house of Anton Chekhov
Here you might get acquainted with the family
store of Anton Chekov, see household items used
by the family and feel the atmosphere which
reigned in the house during Chekhov’s young
years.
The Museum of Literature (Gymnasium)
What might be also interesting from the visitor’s
point of view is the oldest Gymnasium where the
famous Russian playwright studied for 11 years.
Now it is the Literature Museum. You can see
Anton's desk and his classroom, the assembly hall
and even the punishment cell, sometimes visited by
the naughty kid.
The Theatre
The Theater (1866) standing on the main street of
Taganrog, Petrovskaya Street, is the very theater that
Anton Chekhov frequented while studying Russian and
World Drama.
Chekhov’s Lavka (Colonial Stores)
In 1841 a serf belonging to a Russian nobleman had
purchased his freedom and the freedom of his family for
3,500 roubles, being at the rate of 700 roubles a soul.
The grandson of this serf was Anton Chekhov. A few
years after purchasing his freedom he settled in
Taganrog, where he afterwards opened the "Colonial
Stores."
The Monument to Peter
the Great
Peter the Great founded the fortress and port city of Taganrog in
1698. Its rise and development are closely connected with the
great and dramatic history of the Russian Empire, with its
century-long struggle for the access to the southern seas. In April
1898, Anton Chekhov met with Mark Antokolski in Paris, France
to arrange the production of a bronze statue. The statue was
molded in the workshop of Thibaut Brothers in Paris. The
pedestal for the monument was made in 1901 by Mr. Eduards,
the owner of an atelier in Odessa. The monument was delivered
from Marseilles to Taganrog on July 27, 1901 by the steamboat
Despino.
