In Hanko you can breathe fresh sea air.
The days are characterized by the closeness to
the sea and you wake up to the sound of the sea
and the rhythm of the waves licking the beach.
The town on the southernmost peninsula of our
country is surrounded by sea in three directions.
The sea always shapes not just nature but also
people. Steep, sun-drenched cliffs, swimming in
the sea and endless sand beaches; the love for the
sea together with the favourite little spots for wild
strawberries often become permanent.

”The sea has always fascinated me.
It feels slightly scary, but still like home,
no matter where you are.
Wooden boats have a long history in
Hanko. The 6mR-boat Merenneito is built in
Hangonkeksi in the 1920s, whereas the 6mR
boat Sara of Hanko was finished in 2006
at my grandfather’s and father’s shipyard.
Having been able to follow renovations
and the building of classic competition
boats from early childhood has aroused a
genuine interest for wooden boats. Wooden
boats are much closer to my heart than the
mass-produced glassfiber boats of today they are simply much more beautiful.
I have had the opportunity to work on
several old classic wooden boats, which
I am very happy about and proud of.”

from driftwood and recycled material. Right now he is
highly topical with his trash art. Recycled art is more
fashionable than ever before. The idea for a picture
can emerge from an abandoned piece of plastic pipe
on the beach. Pelle creates, and his wife Tuula Puno
paints their common works of art.

T
he Hanko Spa was active in Hanko
between 1879 and 1939, and the demand for accommodation was great.
In the Spa Park and its surroundings large
wooden villas were erected and were often
rented by the Spa Park guests for the entire
summer. There wasn’t a sufficient amount
of hotels and guest houses and the demand
for private rooms was great.
The charming tradition of welcoming and accommodating visitors in private
houses has survived to this day and there
is currently a large amount of flats and
houses for different tastes in different parts
of the town. Many of these accommodations have the same guests returning year
after year.

Exploring
cosy little shops

n Hanko you can find a large number of cosy shops, offering locally
produced products as well as wellknown brands. These personal shops
are situated along the pedestrian street
in the town center and serve you all
year round. The cinema Kino Olympia at Vuorikatu has kept its décor from
the 1940s and is a rare treasure among
cinemas.
The Eastern Harbour is Finland’s
largest guest harbor and a pulsating
meeting point in Hanko, where yachtsmen and landlubbers alike enjoy the
crowds. In summer you are met by
scents from the evening market, you
can eat pancakes, choose fresh fish,
shop in the small booths and enjoy an
extensive selection of programs.
Remember to take a peak around the
next house corner: You may stumble

25 years of theatre in Hanko! The Theatre
Festival is the biggest Swedish-speaking
theatre festival in Finland and offers 30–50
shows on stages situated around the town,
in parks, boats and restaurants.
8–10.7 EVLI Hanko Regatta
This traditional sailing race is one of the
biggest sailing events in Finland, often
gathering around 200 participating boats.
The Regatta has been held annually since
1945.

The Pike’s Gut (Hauensuoli)
Gustavsvärn is the best kept part of a four-part larger whole of fortresses
outside Hanko. The little islet contains the ruins of a fortress built by the
Swedes in the late 18th century, as well as a lighthouse from 1951. The attendant’s house is well kept and looked after by the Finnish Lighthouse Society.
Hauensuoli is a narrow strait between the islands Tullholmen and Kobben
outside Tulliniemi. There are over 640 kept rock carvings on the island. “The
visitor’s book of the archipelago” consists of names and coats of arms of
nobility, soldiers and tradesmen. The earliest ones are from the 16th century.
Cruises are arranged on Tuesdays and Saturdays during the 1.7–16.8 season and on Tuesdays
during the 17-31.8 season. Departure from the ST 1 quay in the Eastern Harbour at 2 p.m. Duration approx. 2 hours. Adults 25 €, children (4–14 years) 10 €. Contingent on weather. Bookings in

Bengtskär
R
ussarö island is located five kilometres south of Hanko and has
been the base for pilot activities
for hundreds of years. The lighthouse
itself and the beacon, which came before the lighthouse, have been on the island long before the town of Hanko was
founded. The current lighthouse was first
used in 1863 and it is till one of our most
significant and brightest lighthouses in
the country. The beautiful red lighthouse
with eight corners has five storeys. The
two bottom floors are built of granite and
the top ones of brick. The lighthouse is
21.4 metres high. The current lens was
manufactured by AGA and installed in
1951. The light cone has a radius of 16.9
nautical miles. The Transport Administration did up the lighthouse in 2014 and
it will open to the general public in the
summer of 2016.
Russarö, the fortress island outside
Hanko, is strongly associated with Finland’s maritime and naval defence history. The island was closed to the general
public for a long time. In 2016 there will
be 9 cruises to Russarö. During the guided tour we will get to know the historical significance of the fortress island to
Finland’s naval defence, as well as the history of the lighthouse itself. A visit into
the lighthouse is an optional part of the
guided tour.
Please note! At the moment only persons with
Finnish citizenship can visit Russarö.

when the last rays of the day escape
and the cliffs lurk, unknown to them

Being the tallest lighthouse within the Nordic countries, Bengtskär rises
a majestic 52 metres above sea level. If you want to experience the
magnificent view, you have to climb up 252 steps, but the view is well
worth the trouble! The lighthouse was built in 1906 and is situated about
25 kilometres south-west of Hanko. On Bengtskär there is a lighthouse
museum, a home turned museum, an exhibition on the Battle of
Bengtskär, a lighthouse post and a café, as well as premises for accommodation and conferences.
Daily cruises from the Eastern Harbour during the 18.6–31.8 season. Departure at 11 a.m, arrival
at 4.30 p.m. Adults 60 €, children (4–14 years) 25 €. Price includes lunch, guide and entrance
at Bengtskär. There is a café on board. It is advisable to pre-book. Contingent on weather.

Russarö
There are numerous treasures of war history on Russarö, the fortress
island outside Hanko. Russarö is strongly connected with Finland’s
maritime and naval defense history. The beautiful stone lighthouse on the
island was built in 1863 and is called the Eye of Hanko. The lighthouse has
been restored in 2014 and is opened to the public in 2016.
Cruises are arranged on the following dates: Sat 11.6, Sat 18.6, Sat 2.7, Tue 12.7, Tue 19.7, Sat 30.7,
Sat 6.8, Sat 13.8, and Sat 27.8. Departure from Hanko at 5 p.m., arrival at 8.30 p.m. Only persons
with Finnish citizenship can visit Russarö. Adults 37 €, children (4–14 years) 20 €. Entrance to

Guided Seal Safari to the outer archipelago
Take a trip to the outer archipelago to see the greys seals living in the Baltic
Sea. There are over 12 000 grey seals and with a bit of luck you can spot one!

T
he painter Venny Soldan-Brofeldt had
a strong affection for the sea and life
close to nature. In 1908 she found her
summer paradise on the cape Mellantorskaren in Tvärminne. Together with her husband Juhani Aho, she rented Toska, which
she came to love. The rent was originally
40 marks per year. The family lived a modest life close to nature by the sea. Everyday
life on the rocky cape consisted of sunbathing, dipping into the salty sea, sailing and
fishing. The artist painted and drew sundrenched archipelago landscapes, often with
her own family as the subject.
Venny Soldan-Brofeldt’s love for the sea
landscape is reflected in many of her paintings, but also in the wonderful book Merimajamme ja me, which tells about the life of
her family and everyday reflections on the
beauty of the nature in Tvärminne.
“A few decades ago we had the great fortune of being able to settle down on a deserted and untouched island in order to make it
our home. Very soon we started to feel more
at home on this wild, but friendly island
than anywhere else, despite the fact that we
only spent the short summers there. Life on
the island often seemed so perfect to us, that
the thought: This is the highlight, this must
be the end of everything - inevitably entered
our minds. But, strangely enough, the following summer would always be even better, although never in the same way.”

Merimajamme ja me (WSOY, 1930)
Venny Soldan-Brofeldt (1863-1945) is one of
Finland’s most loved and appreciated female
artists, mainly a realistic depicter of people’s
lives. She has been described as a brave and
prejudice-free female multitasker within the
world of art.
Venny Soldan-Brofeldt was married to
Juhani Aho, Finland’s first properly professional author and the foremost representative of the national romantics in Finland.
The couple’s good friend Jean Sibelius is
said to have recommended them a visit to
Tvärminne. The archipelago environment
and the barren life appealed to Venny, who
came to spend more time on Toska than her
husband Juhani Aho over the years. Aho’s
big passion was fishing and he often spent
long periods of time in lake districts.
T
here were quite a few famous people staying in
Tvärminne around the turn of the century, among
them the most distinguished composer of the
country, Jean Sibelius, who spent the summer of 1902
on Södergård in Tvärminne. At the age of 36 Sibelius
came to Tvärminne without his family; he wanted peace
and quiet and looked for a counterweight to his life in
the city.
Södergård belonged to the pilot Johan Jakob Österlund and offered full board and lodging for summer
guests. Sibelius’ piano is said to have arrived at Lappvik
station by train and was then wheeled on a barrow along
sandy roads to Södergård. It was the first ever piano
seen in the area and it was placed in the main hall of the
cottage, where it was frequently used by Sibelius.
It is more common knowledge that Sibelius spent
time walking along the beaches on his own during his
visits in Tvärminne. He swam for hours and then lay
down to sleep in the sand under some pine.
“His rowing trips were sometimes fairly long. Once,
when I happened to be in the village, Sibelius had just
returned from a rowing trip around the “island”, which
without counting the bends and turns is a distance of
about six km. During his trip he had angled 80 perches,
he informed us with pride.” — From the book Allehanda

Sibeliuspuisto (the Sibelius square) in Hanko is the
town’s tribute to the composer. The park was named after
Sibelius in 1953, and later on a fountain with the sculpture the Bird by artist Carl-Gustaf Lilius was built there.
Nature in Hanko, the picturesque pilot and fishing villages, as
well as the the most fashionable spa in the country attracted
many authors, artists and musicians in its time. Sibelius had
his grand piano transported to the pilot cottage in Tvärminne
and this is where he created his perhaps most famous song
Var det en dröm? (Was it a dream?). With the artists came
modernity, like naturism: Venny Soldan-Brofeldt and Juhani
Aho with their family on Toska, and Helge Lindberg on
Sandskär in Täktom caused dismay among the villagers with
their nudity. Karl August Tavaststjerna spent time in Hanko
in the late 19th century. He too was intrigued by the sea and
wrote: “There is a small part of the sea in all people – at least
in all interesting people.”

CULTURAL PERSONALITIES IN HANKO
Where to go to get inspired and create art if not Hanko? Some
of our most renowned artists like Venny Soldan-Brofeldt and
Jean Sibelius, came here, but Hanko has also been a popular
site for movies. The first movie Ansa Ikonen and Tauno Palo
filmed together, Everybody Loves, was filmed here, as well as
scenes from The Unknown Soldier. Georg Malmstén performed
here and composed the Hanko Waltz known in Finnish as
Leila. Today Hanko is home to several artists.
You are very welcome to come and experience the summer
2016 exhibition in the museum of Hanko about cultural
personalities in Hanko. You will encounter nostalgia, but also
some more recent artists.

The Sea Pie and the Headless Man
During a guided walk in the centre of Hanko,
we will get acquainted with a lot of the
monuments, many of which are related to the
war history of the town or to the shipping trade.
In the Town Hall Park you can find the bronze
sculpture Marielle, wanting to bring calm to
her surroundings and on Vuorikatu there is the
playful Seasnake and the sea pie, the town’s
official bird.

The Architecture of Hanko
Hanko town was founded in 1874 to become
Finland’s winter harbour. The town grew
rapidly; the winter harbour and the most
distinguished spa in Finland made Hanko into
a town of the future. Famous architects like
Lars Sonck, Theodor Höjer, Jac Ahrenberg,
Valdemar Aspelin and Armas Lindgren, made
drawings for buildings in Hanko. In 1955
the factory Hyvon Kudeneule Oy started
operating in a factory building planned by
Viljo Revell. The building was nominated as
the world’s most beautiful factory building by
an Italian architectural magazine.

Life in Hangonkylä in the 18th Century
The original settlement of the town was
constructed around the berth of Chapel
Harbour. During the guided tour two women
from the village tell their life story and about
the dramatical fate of the village in the 18th
century, when the Russians burnt it down
twice.

Wonderful Tulliniemi
The nature trail of Tulliniemi on the
northern beach leads you to the outer
archipelago, to the southernmost tip
of Finland, where the archipelago sea
and the Gulf of Finland mix. The south
tip is a fantastic picnic destination all
year round; you will be greeted by an
astonishing view over the sea and a
sunset that entices you to return time
after time. Length of path: 6,7 km.
Tulliranta, the southern beach, is really
worth a visit too. Here you can find an
official beach for swimming and surfing
and a naturist beach.
Where: Tulliniemi, about 2,5 km from the centre.
The Love Path on Puistovuoret
The Love Path offers a unique mixture
of nature and historical events. On
the wooded, rocky cape you will find
memorials and remains of war. The 1,5
km-long walk takes you back to the 19th
century, when the path was constructed
for the well-being of the spa guests.

The Högholmen and Svanvik
nature trails
The nature trail of Högholmen is a
nature reserve with magnificent pines,
sand beaches, dunes and submarine
sandbanks. You can enjoy and learn
about the characteristics of this nature
through twelve information boards
positioned along the trail. The path is 1
km long.
Svanvik is an open and shallow bay,
where a nature trail leads to a bird
watching tower by the shore.

Windbreak and fireplace
A windbreak with a fireplace is
situated in Furunäs and on the island
Gunnarsörarna, about 7 km north-west

The largest guest harbour in Finland.
The harbour is the place to be during
the summer with its activities, small
shops and colourful evening markets.
The evening market is organized on
Wednesdays and Fridays.
•The Emigration Monument, Merikatu.
The emigration monument was
unveiled in 1967 and departure
municipalities are mentioned on
the monument. The monument was
designed by sculptor Mauno Oittinen
and consists of three bronze cranes
flying westwards.
Hanko. Eventually Soviet troops were
forced to evacuate Hanko in early
December 1941. There are still ruins of
fortifications in the centre of the town.

Finland. The outer archipelago is
an excellent day trip destination all

The Water Tower is a beautiful
symbol of Hanko. There is a fantastic
view in all directions over the cape of
Hanko and the Baltic Sea. The tower
rises 65 m above sea level, there is a
lift to the top floor, and you can also
find a telescope here.

Hauensuoli is a narrow strait
between the islands Tullholmen and
Kobben outside Tulliniemi. There
are over 640 kept rock carvings on
the island. “The visitor’s book of the
archipelago” consists of names and
coats of arms of nobility, soldiers
and tradesmen. The earliest ones
are from the 16th century.

THE HANKO CHURCH
The church was built in 1892. The
original red brick neo-gothic church
was designed by Jacob Ahrenberg
and in 1953 Bertel Liljequist remodelled
the church in the manner of the day.

Through history Hanko has been an
important harbour. This harbour also
became the most important harbour
for emigrants seeking their fortune
overseas. During 1880-1930 nearly 400
000 Finns emigrated to North America
and Australia, most of them via Hanko.

Western Harbour. The Hanko-Hull line
became the main emigrant route;
from Hull the emigrants continued
by train to Liverpool or Southampton.
The fastest trip from Hanko to New
York would last 2–3 weeks.

The fortification of Hanko
The cape of Hanko and the
surrounding area has always been an
important military object. The Swedish
military built field armaments here
already in the 18th century. In the 19th
century field fortification was built on
the mainland as well as on the islands
to prevent the enemy from passing
the cape of Hanko.
Three islands in front of Kuningattarenvuori formed a suitable triangle
surrounding the existing sea routes
and perfect for crossfire. The islands
of Gustavsvärn, Gustaf Adolf, Mejerfelt
and Kuningattarenvuori were fortified.
Overall, the armaments had a garrison
of 500 soldiers. In the northern dale
of Kuningattarenvuori, a 200-250
residents’ “fort city” emerged, called
the garrison of Kuningattarenvuori.
Summertime cruises depart to the
island of Gustavsvärn where you can
still see the ruins of this fortification.
Sights connected to 1940–41:
•Light coastal battery, Puistovuoret
and Varisniemi
•Anti-aircraft battery, Kansanpuisto
•Tulliniemi barracks. The beaches in
Tulliniemi had strong beach defense
areas constructed on both sides,
equipped with mines and barriers
as well as firing stations that lined
the beach with regular and light
machine guns. When the Russians
had left the Hanko peninsula
base in December 1941, Finland
and Germany decided to move
the holiday transportation of the
northern German troops to Hanko in
the spring of 1942. To facilitate this, a
separate passenger traffic train line
was built to Tulliniemi as well as a
village for the vacationers comprising more than 100 barracks.
•The Soviet Monument, Täktomintie.
453 Soviet soldiers are buried close
to the monument, 267 of them are
unidentified. They were killed in
action during the Continuation War.

Hanko–a soviet naval base
The whole cape of Hanko was leased
to the Soviet Union as a naval base
for 30 years after the peace treaty of
Moscow which ended the Winter War
in 1940. The Soviet Union brought a
garrison of 30,000 men to Hanko, and
the Soviets did extensive building in

THE MONUMENT OF LIBERTY
The Monument of Liberty was erected
in 1921 in remembrance of the landing
of German forces in Hanko in 1918.

Ilmari Wirkkala and Leonard Savola
