The villas are built in the style of the time with porches, balconies, towers and pinnacles. In the mid-19th century some of the richer bourgeois started to build palace like summer places like in Ruissalo outside Turku and in the Spa Park in Hanko. The Hanko Spa was founded in 1879 and the planning of the villa quarters began around the same time. At the turn of the century there were 27 villas in the spa park and in 1914 there were 62 villas. The villas were built along the winding Kylpyläpuistontie (“Spa road”), a road known as Appelgrenintie today. Quite a few of the villa owners were wealthy and hired architects for the planning of the buildings, which have traits of Swiss style, Old Norse style and Art Nouveau. One of the first villas to be built in the Spa Park in 1880 was the so called Kronqvist’s villa, nowadays Villa Tellina on Appelgrenintie 2. The year after Villa Doris was built on Appelgrenintie 23, by order of Carl Korsman, managing director of the spa company. Villa Doris was built in two floors with 17 one-room flats, explicitly as accommodation for spa guests. Villa Frenckell on Appelgrenintie 8 was planned by the famous architect Theodor Höijer for A.R. Frenckell, the schoolmaster, in the mid-1880s. As a matter of curiosity, let it be mentioned that the famous millionaire and philanthropist Aurora Karamzin rented the villa in the summer of 1895. Theodor Höijer planned one more villa for Frenckell on Mannerheimintie 12 in 1896. The present Villa Tita-Maria on Appelgrenintie 21 was originally called Villa Schloss after the pharmacist Sophia S. Schloss from Saint Petersburg. She had the villa constructed and it was built by Hangö Ångsåg & Snickeri between 1887 and 1888. Spa hotels were built on the outskirts of the settlement at the time. Hotel Pension Bellevue and the company villa on Mannerheimintie were built for the spa guests. Bellevue had 66 lodgings for visitors and advertised itself with its marvellous position by the sea shore, a first-class kitchen and an outstanding wine cellar. The company villa had four flats with three rooms and a kitchen and was aimed at families with children. A guided tour around the villas in the Spa Park takes us back in time and reminds us of the life in the Grand Duchy and the life in the heydays of the Spa Park: “The tales of the Spa Park villas”. HANKO SPA The Hanko Spa was a hydro operating in Hanko between 1879 and 1939. The establishment had no spring of its own, instead cold baths in the sea were of great importance, and after World War I there were the open air baths. Among the treatments you could find half bath, hip bath, steam bath, wrapping treatments, pine needle bath, mud bath massage, electric bath, carbon dioxide bath and physiotherapy. In 1895 a six-week-long stay in Hanko, all inclusive, cost about 240–480 marks, i.e. 1200–2400 euros in today’s money. The Spa was in its heyday before World War I, when it was the most modern spa in Finland. The summer of 1939 was its last year in operation and the bombings during the World War II damaged the public bath house, which was demolished after the war in 1945. Guidance in Finnish: 19.7 at 13–14.30. Guidance in Swedish: 26.7 at 13–14.30. Start of tour: The Monument of Liberty. Price: Adults 7 €, children under the age of 16 free of charge. Amazing rock carvings, coats of arms and marks of merchants are all preserved from the Vasa period and the Swedish Great Power period. The history on the Hanko peninsula has always been eventful because of its strategically important position. Swedes and Russians built fortresses here long before the town was founded in 1874. After this the town has experienced fashionable spa living, dramatic war times, emigration and industrialisation. All these events have formed, changed and left their mark on the town and its history. Experience 10 aspects on the town’s history at the Museum of Hanko. All artefacts and pictures are from the museum’s own collections and visitors can examine some items by themselves.
