WellMed breaks their
way to a new building

Once one is tired of working
inside smaller conditions, all that
is wanted is a little wiggle room
to work.
This week, WellMed has
decided to demolish their old,
cramped space and move into a
new 27,000-squared-foot facility a
few feet away. Mark Feinberg, senior director, property and capital
management at WellMed management discussed that the project has
been in the works for several years
with La Prensa.
“This project is probably like
six years in the making so for all
of the people who were involved
in it …and just to have some sat-
isfaction for this building to come
down it just makes me feel better
about everything that is going on,”
explained Feinberg.
The moment the employees hit
the hammer into the wall, there was
an understanding that it was time
to keep up with the needs of their
patients. Building and constructing the new facility was the only
way to provide added space for
resources that could not fit into the
older building.
“So early on we basically [had]
outgrown this building. The patient load was to a point where
we couldn’t really service them
well,” said Dr. Aaron Anguiano,
medical director for WellMed, and
went on to further discuss what
new resources are being offered
including, “x-rays, specialists, a

No me sentaré. No me callaré. Calendario de la comunidad
Soy un
periodista, y
mi trabajo es
hacer preguntas. Donald
Trump es un
candidato a
la presidencia
Jorge Ramos
de Estados
Unidos, y su trabajo es explicar
qué haría si llega a la Casa Blanca. Su trabajo y el mío chocan.
Todo comenzó cuando Trump
lanzó su candidatura en junio y
dijo: “Cuando México envía a su
gente, no envía a los mejores. No
envía a gente como ustedes. Están
enviando a gente con muchos
problemas y traen esos proble
mas con ellos. Traen drogas.
Traen crimen. Son violadores. Y
algunos, supongo, son buenos”.”
La realidad es otra. La gran
mayoría de los indocumentados
no son criminales. Y todos los
estudios – como el del Immigration Policy Center – concluyen
que la tasa de criminalidad entre
los inmigrantes es inferior a la de
los nacidos en Estados Unidos.
Tampoco había ninguna evidencia – ¡ninguna! – de una conspira
ción del gobierno de México para
enviar delincuentes al norte.
Lo que decía Trump no era
cierto. Había que enfrentarlo y
desmentirlo. Así que le envié una
carta de mi puño y letra, con mi
teléfono celular, solicitando una
entrevista. Nunca me contestó.
Pero publicó mi carta en la Internet (exacto, tuve que cambiar
mi celular).
Desde entonces estuve buscando la manera de hacerle estas
preguntas:
1. ¿Cómo piensa deportar a 11
millones de indocumentados?
¿Con el ejército? ¿Detendría a
miles en estadios? El plan migratorio de Trump incluiría una
de las mayores deportaciones en
masa de la historia moderna.
2. Si lograra cambiar la Constitución para quitarle la ciudadanía
a hijos de indocumentados ¿a
dónde deportaría los bebés que no
tienen patria ni pasaporte?
3. ¿Para qué construir el muro
más grande del mundo entre
dos países –de 1,954 millas de
largo– si casi 40 por ciento de
los indocumentados vienen en
avión con visa temporal y luego
se quedan? Sería un desperdicio
de tiempo y dinero.
Con estas preguntas me fui a
Dubuque, Iowa, donde Trump
iba a dar un discurso y una conferencia de prensa. Me acredité,
llegué casi dos horas antes a la
sala de prensa, entró Trump, dos
reporteros hicieron sus preguntas
antes que yo, luego dije que tenía
una pregunta sobre inmigración,
nadie se opuso, me levanté, comencé a plantear mi pregunta y,
de pronto, el candidato (visiblemente molesto con lo que oía)
trató de quitarme la palabra y me
mandó a sentar.

No me senté y no me callé. Dije
que como periodista, inmigrante
y ciudadano estadounidense tenía
el derecho a hacer una pregunta,
pero Trump le ordenó a uno
de sus guardaespaldas que me
sacara. Nunca, en mis más de 30
años como periodista, me habían
expulsado de una conferencia de
prensa. Para mí, eso solo podía
pasar en dictaduras, no en Estados Unidos.
Luego de 10 minutos – y la
presión de los periodistas Tom
Llamas de ABC News y Kasie
Hunt de MSNBC – Trump tuvo
que rectificar y me permitió regresar a la sala de prensa. Pero lo
hice con una condición: que me
dejaran hacer mis preguntas. Y
las hice. Trump, como siempre,
no quiso ser específico en sus

Me han acusado de ser un
activista. Pero soy, sencillamente, un periodista que hace
preguntas. Lo que pasa es que,
como periodista, es necesario
tomar partido y asumir un punto
de vista cuando se trata de racis
mo, discriminación, corrupción,
mentiras públicas, dictaduras
y derechos humanos. Y lo que
está proponiendo Trump podría
generar múltiples y muy graves
violaciones civiles contra millo
nes de personas.
Los mejores ejemplos de periodismo que conozco – Edward
R. Murrow contra el senador Joe
McCarthy, Walter Cronkite denunciando la guerra de Vietnam
o el diario The Washington Post
obligando a renunciar a Nixon,
entre muchos otros – han ocurri
do cuando los periodistas toman
una postura y se enfrentan a los
poderosos. Debemos tomar partido, decía el Premio Nobel de la
Paz, Elie Wiesel.
La neutralidad ayuda al opresor,
nunca a la víctima.”
Es muy peligroso cuando un
candidato presidencial habla con
tanto odio contra una minoría
y contra los más vulnerables en
un país. Eso permite que otros
sigan su ejemplo y actúen con
violencia, como el hombre que
me encontré fuera de la sala de
prensa y me dijo: ¡Lárgate de mi
país, lárgate!”
También es el mío, le contesté.
Al final del intenso intercambio en Iowa, Trump me dijo que
hablaríamos. Eso espero. Aún
tiene muchas preguntas que contestar. Mientras tanto, seguiremos
chocando.

Just a Thought: Growing old gracefully
Yesterday I
celebrated my
69th birthday.
Who knew I
would live
this long? I
am the same
age as PresiSteve Walker dent George
W. Bush, Pre
sident Bill Clinton, and my friend
Jaime Martinez who is only eight
days older than me. I have written
about my walking the picket lines
with Jaime in La Prensa more
than once.
Growing up, I was told on
many occasions I would not live to
be 30 years old if I didn’t change
my ways. The good news for me
is that most of those people who
forecast my premature demise are
no longer with us, God rest their
souls. I must be doing something
right I guess.
For those who were convinced
of my untimely death, or said that
things would not go well for me
in my life should I survive to old
age-- I say to them, like a little
kid who sticks out his tongue and
puts his thumbs in his ears and
wiggles them, “nah, nah, nah, nah,
nah!!” (Growing old gracefully?)
I happily say they truly misunderstood me and underestimated
me as well.
When I was in 8th grade at St.
Gregory the Great Catholic School
in Balcones Heights, I remember
being told to stand up in front of
the class by the nun who asked
my fellow students to pray to St.
Jude the patron saint for hopeless
cases! She informed the class that
I needed spiritual guidance to turn
my life around and grow up to do
something worthwhile. That was
a self-confidence builder that is an
incentive to grow old gracefully.
Since my family life expectancy
is not all that long in of itself,
heredity not being favourable, the
future would appear to look bleak.
My father passed away at the
age of 62 suffering from diabetes.
Before he passed he lost some of
his extremities in the process. His
parents both died at 65 so I have
out lived both my father and his
parents, not so graciously.
My mother’s father and mother
both passed away at 40 due to my
grandmother’s tuberculosis and
my grandfather’s cancer. At least
my mother made it to 81! But
despite all that I am expecting to
continue on and if all goes well, I
will make it to one hundred years
old! That is my goal, God willing.
Apparently the prayer to St.
Jude was successful as I did graduate high school against all odds,
and earned a bachelor’s degree
from Texas Wesleyan University
with a teaching certificate. I went
on to earn a Master’s degree from
the University of the Incarnate
Word in Education. I was even
voted “Most Likely to Succeed”
from Wesleyan in 1969. How
about that? Who would have ever
imagined? Not me!
In 1981-82 I served as the
President of the Junior Chamber
of Commerce during President
Ronald Reagan’s visit to San Antonio during our national convention as guest speaker after the John
Hinckley assassination attempt. I
have written about that experience
for La Prensa in 2013.
From there I served 8 years as
a Balcones Heights City Councilman, the only one to date who
attended St. Gregory’s. Thank
you St. Jude once again! Prayers
do work.
Then of course I served as
a Justice of the Peace for four
years. I wrote the “Ask the Judge”
column for two of those years for
La Prensa, before writing “Just a
Thought,” for the last two and a
half years.
I am getting old, but the question is, “Am I growing old gracefully?” You be the judge of that.
I am slowing down a little bit
like most old folk, but I am still
moving forward. I can still hear,
see, walk, talk, and chew gum
at the same time on most days. I
even converse with myself when
no one is around. Some of those
conversations are pretty interesting. (Just kidding)
As I continue to age and apply heavy doses of Oil of Olay
moisture cream on my face daily
to look younger than 69, I hope I
appear to be “graceful as well as
gracious.”
Anyway, as always, what I write
is “Just a Thought.”

Uno de las provisiones del
acuerdo tentativo logrado entre
los gobiernos del P5+1 (países
miembros del Consejo de Seguridad Permanente y Alemania, incluyendo la Unión Europea) e Irán
resalta lo siguiente: “Irán reafirma
que, bajo ninguna circunstancia,
este país tratará de buscar desarro
llar o adquirir cualquier (forma
de) arma nuclear”.
No es uno de los mejores pactos para reducir y prolongar la
adquisición de armas nucleares
de Irán. Sin embargo, esta es la
única opción real que se tiene. La
otra es la guerra, la cual ha sido
una política del actual gobierno
israelí de Benjamin Netanyahu y
un grupo de representantes y senadores en el Congreso –muchos
de ellos republicanos—, quienes
creen que Irán es un verdadero
demonio del mundo.
El acuerdo ya fue tácitamente
negado en el Senado. Esta dependencia del gobierno tiene la
autoridad de ratificar cualquier
acuerdo internacional negociado
por el ejecutivo. De momento,
esta dependencia legislativa,
misma que está dominada por la
banca republicana, le ha negado
la luz verde al presidente.
No obstante, para oficializar
esta negativa los senadores republicanos necesitan un total de
60 de 100 votos. Es casi seguro
que los 54 senadores republicanos decidan por el No. A ellos se
unieron los senadores demócratas
Charles E. Schumer de New York
y Robert Menéndez de New
Jersey, quienes ya demostraron
su oposición ante los medios de
comunicación.
Recientemente, la senadora de
Washington, Patty Murray, manifestó que no solamente se opone
al acuerdo de Irán, sino también
se uniría a los republicanos en
caso de que el presidente Obama
vete un proyecto sobre este tema,
el cual está en proceso de legislación en el Senado.
Es decir, si los republicanos
logran reunir los 60 votos, el Senado como la Cámara de Representantes tiene todo el derecho de
presentar, debatir, votar y legislar
un proyecto similar, el cual sería
presentado ante el Ejecutivo para
buscar la firma del presidente.
De momento hay dos proyectos
en el Senado. El de Kirk-Menéndez y Cooker-Menéndez. El
presidente Obama dijo que vetaría
estos dos proyectos de legislación
en cuanto llegue a la Casa Blanca.
Entonces, los republicanos
necesitarían 67 de los 100 se-
nadores para revertir el veto del
presidente. Si los republicanos
han tenido problemas en encontrar el apoyo de seis votos
demócratas o independientes
para negar el acuerdo de Irán,
persuadir a otros seis senadores
sería una tarea muy difícil, tal vez
imposible, de alcanzar.
Por otra parte, la Unión Europea, a través de sus representan
tes, aprobó el acuerdo logrado
entre las dos partes. Lo mismo
hizo el Consejo de Seguridad de
las Naciones Unidas.
Así, lo más razonable y racional
es que los senadores del Congreso
den la luz verde al presidente
Obama para que firme el acuer
do y lo convierta en un tratado
oficial.
Los senadores que se oponen
al acuerdo del P5+1 e Irán tienen
que darse cuenta que la otra opción es la guerra. Si analizamos
los recientes acontecimientos en
el Medio Oriente, la guerra produjo más calamidades que remedios.
En consecuencia, es tiempo de dar
paso al diálogo, la diplomacia y el
compromiso político.

de la parroquia de San Francisco
de Asís y personal de Habitat
for Humanity iniciarán la cons
trucción de una casa de costo
económico para una familia de
modestos recursos en Old Pearsall
Rd. y Excellence Dr.
Habitat for Humanity construye
anualmente en San Antonio un
promedio de 50 casas de habi
tación para familias modestas,
como en el caso de esta casa en
particular en la que intervienen los
voluntarios de la parroquia referida
y personal técnico.
En proyectos como este participa también un segundo grupo
de voluntarios apoyando con agua
y alimentos a las personas que
trabajan en la obra.
Según los planes de la construcción, esta casa estará lista para
ser inaugurada y ocupada, en un
ambiente festivo entre miembros
de la parroquia referida y familia
propietaria, el día 14 de noviembre a fin de que la familia beneficiada esté a tiempo para celebrar
la Navidad y festividades de fin de
año en su nuevo hogar.
Para esta nueva casa se requiere
del trabajo en diferentes capacidades de 170 voluntarios, de los
cuales los organizadores tienen ya
registrados un número considera
ble. Pero aún hay lugar para más
personas que quieran participar en
el proyecto.
Y el trabajo voluntario no se
limita a la edificación propiamente
dicha, sino que también se requiere
de personas provean alimentos
ligeros y, sobre todo, agua durante
las horas de trabajo cada viernes
y sábado durante la mitad de septiembre y en el mes de octubre.

Shop2Care unveils app

Donating to the San Antonio
Food Bank (SAFB) is now only
an app away.
The recent unveiling of the
Shop2Care app was more than
a way to contribute to a worthy
cause. It was also a way to make
purchases from over 1,000 popular retailers with the sale going to
provide meals for the SAFB.
“People are busy, so this app
allows anyone to make a difference,” said Eric Cooper, SAFB
president and CEO. “There are
not many opportunities where
100 percent of the proceeds go
to the charity. Just download
Shop2Care and go to retailer like
Amazon and the rebates from
your purchase comes to the food
bank.”
Financial support for the SAFB
bottom line extends far beyond
San Antonio proper, as it also
services 16 surrounding counties
including other food pantries that
make experience a shortfall.
In that given area, nearly
500,000 people go hungry annually and that is why the smallest
donation is far from the wasted.
Furthermore, Shop2Care will pro-
vide an additional seven meals for
the first 10,000 people who download the app and shop through
it on either Apple or Android
marketplace.
“The SAFB feeds 58,000 people each week and we do that with
an network of 530 non-profits
spread throughout 16 counties in
southwest Texas. We’re always
looking for people step up and
help,” Cooper continued.
Among those partners is Shop2Care, who has done similar
contribution projects across the
country.
Mark Asofsky, the founder and
CEO of the philanthropic organization, was quick to explain that
no personal data on purchases is
kept and all transactions are done
on a secure site directly with the
retailers.
After a brief 20 seconds to
download the app on either an
iPhone or Android, shoppers proceed directly to the retailer’s site
via their phone or tablet and all
transactions ate done directly with
them. The rebate, which returns to
the SAFB, occurs automatically
as you continue with your shopping experience.
“It’s a very easy to use tool to
fight hunger in the San Antonio
area just by buying the same prod-
ucts and services they normally
buy from the same online retailers. We’ve made arrangements
from over 1,000 major retailers
and that donation comes back to
the SAFB,” said Asofsky.
The extremely frugal budget
of the SAFB runs so tightly, that
every dollar from the app can provide up to seven meals to worthy
recipients.
“Our average rebate from our
retailers is five percent, so a $10
purchase is a return of 50 cents
and that’s three or four meals. We
don’t participate in that transaction, but that donation comes back
to the SAFB,” explained Asofsky.
The strong push to end hunger in South Texas is because
September is “Hunger Action
Month.” With the SAFB being
one of the largest entities in the
state that deals with that condition
head on, it seems only appropriate
that Shop2Care find their way to
the Alamo City.
“The SAFB is having a big
impact across all of Southwest
Texas and that’s what we really
liked about working with them,”
Asofsky concluded.

Metro Health offers free prenatal
classes for expectant mothers

Pregnant women will soon be
able to take advantage of free prenatal classes offered throughout
San Antonio where they can learn
how to enjoy a happy and healthy
pregnancy.
The Healthy Start program, an
infant mortality prevention program of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, will offer the
“Becoming a Mom/Comenzando
Bien” curriculum at no cost thanks
to a $10,000 grant from the March
of Dimes.
“Becoming a Mom/Comenzando Bien is designed for women
who are either pregnant or wanting
to become pregnant in the future
and teach them how to prepare
themselves during pregnancy so
that they have a healthy birth and
healthy baby,” explained Kori
Eberle, program manager for San
Antonio Healthy Start.
“This program gives us a group
setting to deliver that education
in a social setting and hopefully
reduce infant death, prematurity
and low birth weight in our community,” added Eberle.
The program’s goal is to decrease low birth weight births
among participants of the program
by 10 percent. According to Metro
Health, the infant mortality rate in
Bexar County was 6.02 deaths per
1,000 live births in 2013. While the

SAWS board awards largest ever
commercial conservation rebate

At its meeting last Tuesday,
SAWS Board of Trustees awarded a
$250,905 commercial conservation
rebate to Sunshine Laundry. Sunshine is a family and locally-owned
business that first opened its doors
in San Antonio in 1914.
Sunshine is moving from its
original location on N. Flores to a
new location on Commerce Street
near the AT&T Center. In the
process of moving, Sunshine will
also become more conservation
conscious. Through the installation
of new continuous batch tunnel
wash laundry machine, the company
stands prepared to save water.
Conservation incentives are used
to encourage customers to implement innovative designs that use less
water than traditional alternatives.
The transition to water-conserving
equipment will serve as an environmental model for other large-scale
commercial laundry facilities in San
Antonio and across the state.
Sunshine will receive half the
rebate 30 days after the equipment is
purchased, then receive the following half on installation of the equipment with verification of operation.
“This water rebate will enable us
to purchase a Pellerin Milnor Pulse
Flow Continuous Batch Washer
system which is one of the most efficient wash systems in the world,”
said Sunshine Industries President
Ken Harrison. “It will reduce our
annual water consumption by over
14.9 million gallons per year along
with an equal effect on our sewer
discharge. It will also significantly
reduce our carbon foot print.”

SAReads Summer Book Drive
showcases football skills, promotes collects more than 10,000 books
team sports and an active lifestyle
SAReads and its partners are
excited to announce that the 5th
annual SAReads Summer Book
Drive collected more than 10,000
books for the children of Bexar
County. The SAReads Book Bank
will distribute these books to nonprofit organizations throughout the
metro area, including faith-based
entities, youth centers, schools and
pediatric clinics.
Bexar County residents donated
books at all San Antonio Public Library branches and Firstmark Credit
Union locations as well as The
Twig Book Shop and the Omni San
Antonio Hotel at the Colonnade. In
addition, several YMCA locations
joined the book drive effort this
year, including Braundera, Thousand Oaks, Mays, Schertz and the
D.R. Semmes YMCA at TriPoint.
This was the first year SAReads
collected books at more than 50
sites across Bexar County. “We’re
grateful to all of our partners for
making the 2015 Summer Book
Drive such a success. We look
forward to helping these books find
loving homes with the children of
San Antonio,” said Pamela Toman,

The Summer Book Drive was
initially founded by Congressman
Joaquín Castro during his tenure in
the Texas House of Representatives.

Sept. 19, at the Wheatley Heights
Sports Complex, 200 Noblewood
Drive. Registration begins at 9
a.m. and the competition starts
at 10 a.m.
“The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick
inspires young players to work
on their skills, which keeps them
active, and helps them to learn
the fundamentals of football,” explains Program Manager Geronimo Aguirre. “It also has the added
benefit of helping them to be more
competitive if they are participating on football teams.”
Participants punt, pass and kick
a football and accumulate points
by distance and accuracy. The five
age categories include: six and
seven year olds; eight and nine
year olds; 10 and 11 year olds; 12
and 13 year olds; and 14 and 15
year olds. Top scorers in each age
division and gender will advance
to the Sectional competition. Winners of the Sectional competition
receive medals and are in the running for the Houston Texans Team
Championships later this fall.

The forum was organized by
the Mexican branch of the International Life Sciences Institute,
ILSI, a non-profit dedicated to
advancing scientific understanding in the areas such as nutrition,
among others.
“Sugar isn’t the enemy, the
problem is calories,” said Dr.
John L. Sievenpiper, a physician at St. Michael’s Hospital in
Toronto, Canada.
For years, the so-called added
sugars have been blamed for
contributing to the rise in obesity
and causing diabetes, increasing
the incidence of heart disease,
hypertension, and other illnesses.
“Until now, there has been a
sugar-centric approach to the
problem, making sugar the focus of the debate,” Sievenpiper
explained.
According to him, there is little
evidence to link sugar-sweetened
beverages to the appearance
of diabetes or hypertension in
patients.
The consumption of such
drinks, he explained, is a relative
factor compared to other risk
factors such as smoking or a sedentary lifestyle, or one’s genes.
Recent studies suggest other
food products like potato chips,
meat or fried foods contribute
more to the onset of obesity than
sugar-sweetened beverages.
Sweetened drinks with no
calories also formed the subject
of a discussion at the forum.
“Sweeteners are food additives, they are not drugs and one
has to assume they are safe, there
are none in the market which is
not,” said Rebeca Lopez-Garcia,
Principal of Logre International
Food Science Consulting, based
in Mexico City.
Experts say daily caloric intake per capita must be studied
to find the true causes of obesity.
Obesity, a multifactorial
and complex problem, may be
checked through a balanced diet
and eating controlled portions; to
lose weight one requires a change
in diet and more exercise, the
experts concluded.

sistema cardiovascular de una
persona basándose en su perfil
de factores de riesgo, entre los

corporal como un indicador de
obesidad.
“Para evitar que la edad del

Cuidemos nuestra salud en Long-distance

Nuestra salud es lo más valioso
que tenemos que cuidar a diario,
principalmente porque constituye la fuerza laboral, que es la
que mueve a este gran país.
Por ser un fin de semana feriado (puente) en el que estaremos disfrutando del merecido
descanso –tras ocho meses de
intensa tarea laboral en lo que
va del 2015– vamos a echarle de
todo a nuestro estómago. Nos
deleitaremos comiendo platillos
chatarra y de la alta cocina, los
cuales por tradición se acompañan de bebidas gaseosas, de sabores y de contenido alcohólico.
En esta columna les informaré
sobre los riesgos que corremos
cuando se come desmedidamen
te, abusando en el consumo de
antojitos típicos tales como hotdogs, carnes asadas y mariscos.
Sobre todo, nuestra inclinación
por tener dizque buen tiempo
bebiendo licor, cerveza y vinos
más de la cuenta, bebidas que se
encargan de darle trabajo extra
al sistema sanguíneo e intestinal.
Recientemente en mi visita a
una farmacia Walgreens observé
que –por estar próximas las
festividades del Día del Trabajo
a celebrarse desde el viernes 4
al lunes 7 de septiembre (para
algunas empresas y agencias gubernamentales)– en una sección
dedicada a novedosas bebidas se
encontraban coloridas botellas de
vino, con la marca MADD; por
lo que le pregunté al encargado
de turno el por qué las botellas
tenían la marca MADD, cuyas
letras (logotipo) son similares
a la agencia Mother’s Against
Drunk Driving. El encargado
me contestó diciendo que esa es
una bebida alternativa para todo
aquel consumidor que se mantiene sobrio o no gusta de tomar
bebidas de contenido alcohólico.
Así que estas bebidas pueden
tomarse sin ningún riesgo como
una buena copa de vino tinto o
de otras bebidas similares sin
alcohol, conocidas por mojitos,
margaritas, piña colada, cerveza,
vinos rojo, blanco y espumoso,
que contienen cero cantidad de
alcohol.
Yo le dije al encargado que en
mi caso, por ser alcohólico, para
nada me convencía por comprar
una de esas botellas, ya que por
16 años me he conservado en
estado de sobriedad y si llegase
a caer en la tentación por sentir
el sabor de cada uno de los productos MADD estaría de nuevo
por el sendero de recaer.
El alcohólico en recuperación
ni por curiosidad puede arriesgarse a ponerse en los labios una
botella semejante a cualesquier
marca de bebidas alcohólicas.
En el sitio electrónico de
MADD about Virgin Drinks se
indica que Mother’s Against
Drunk Driving y su presidenta
nacional, Laura Dean-Mooney,
aprobaron el producto en mención como alternativa para que la
gente sobria, que gusta disfrutar
de uno de estos productos bajos
en calorías, lo pueda hacer sin
ningún riesgo y los pueda llevar
a una fiesta o reunión familiar
donde otras personas estarán
tomando bebidas de contenido
alcohólico. Así degustarán de la
misma forma, pero sin el peligro
de embriagarse.
Como quiera que sea, a mi
parecer, eso no le soluciona nada
a un alcohólico su situación. Lo
mejor es seguir manteniéndose
sobrio y simplemente decir no
a las invitaciones de otros para
que durante estas festividades se
tomen un trago.
No me opongo a que MADD
haya tomado dicha alternativa,
si ello puede ayudar a quienes
lo consumen. Bueno, solo ellos
sabrán cómo continuar viviendo
en estado de sobriedad.
Regresando a lo que no debemos de consumir en exceso
durante el feriado del Labor Day
(Día del Trabajo). Quienes cocinen platillos caseros, entre
ellos botanas, carnes asadas y
mariscos preparados, busquen
la manera de no sobrepasarse,
sírvanse porciones pequeñas,
las mismas que podrán repetir
dejando pasar un par de horas,
para que así no excedan el metabolismo y den un buen descanso al sistema sanguíneo y los
intestinos. Así evitarán a la vez
intoxicaciones por alimentos,
que bien les pueden postrar en
la sala de emergencia.
Lo que también les recomiendo
es no dejar el desayuno que a
diario toman para ir al trabajo.
Pueden dejar a un lado el
almuerzo, ello no les afectará
estomacalmente para cuando comiencen a deleitarse con botanas
y del tradicional bufete.
Los mariscos tienen que ser
bien preparados y cocidos en su
punto. Yo recomiendo consumir
los cuando ya el estómago haya
recibido porciones de comida,
frutas y ensaladas, para evitar
congestión o convulsiones sorpresivas.
Esto se los digo porque me
consta que los productos de mar
no son buenos comerlos con el
estómago vacío, a menos que
sea un “revitalizador” caldo de
camarón o pescado, los cuales yo
llegué a consumir en mis tiempos
de tomador con su itinerario.
A un amigo doctor, por haberse
indigestado consumiendo ostiones en su concha, ya le andaba
costando la vida. Ello a pesar de
que los estaba acompañando con
su marca de cerveza preferida;
sin embargo, por ser glotón nunca se dio cuenta del peligro que
dicho molusco le iba a causar a
temprana hora del día. Posterior
mente fue internado en la sala de
emergencia.
Con el paso del tiempo, mi
estimado doctor nada quiso con
el consumo de ostiones por la
mañana.
Otra recomendación que les
hago en esta columna, a mis
tres lectores, es que por favor
durante el puente vacacional no
se arriesguen a conducir sus flamantes autos luego de que hayan
tomado bebidas alcohólicas, ya
que los operativos policiacos
van a estar a la orden del día y
de la noche. Como solución, si
es que se animan a embriagarse
durante estos cuatro días de
asueto, como alternativa para no
ser capturados bajo la influencia
de bebidas alcohólicas busquen
a un conductor designado, renten
un taxi, llámenle a un familiar o
amigo para que los recoja.
O bien, si no quieren dejar
“abandonado” su automóvil, contraten los servicios de una grúa,
les costará lo mismo que un taxi
por transportar su unidad móvil
y a ustedes por la misma cuota.
Que pasen el mejor de los
tiempos al lado de sus seres
queridos y amistades, para que
así regresen a sus respectivas
labores en buen estado de salud
y con ánimo de seguir apoyando
el progreso en nuestra cada día
bella y progresista ciudad de El
Álamo.

away can be emotionally and
financially taxing, but there are
some steps to take that can help
the person and ease caregiver
concerns.
Determine what services
are needed if the person lives
alone
• Visit person to determine
what kind of assistance he or
she may need.
• Is there appropriate and
adequate food available?
• Is the person eating regular
meals?
• What is the condition of
the living environment? Has it
changed?
• Are the bills paid?
• Do friends and relatives
visit regularly?
• Is the person maintaining
personal care routines, such as
bathing and grooming?
• Is the person still able to
drive safely?
Turn to others for help
• Establish an informal support system of family, friends,
and neighbors that live near the
person to ensure his or her safety and give the long-distance
caregiver peace of mind.
• Ask that they regularly visit
to check in with the person.
• Ask neighbors to be alert
to anything unusual such as
smoke or an alarm coming from
the person’s home.
• Arrange for companion services or other support through
faith communities, neighborhood groups, home health care
services and volunteer organizations.
Make the most of visits
• Make appointments with
the person’s physicians, law-
yers and financial advisers during visits to facilitate decision
making.
• Meet with neighbors,
friends, and other relatives to
hear observations about how
the person is doing.
• Ask if there have been any
behavioral changes, health
problems or safety issues.
• Reconnect with the person
by talking, listening to music,
going for a walk or participating in activities you enjoy
together.
When the person lives in a
care facility
• Communicate regularly
with the care staff.
• Work with the managing
nurse, physician and social
worker to agree on a time when
to get updates on the person’s
condition and progress.
• Call family, friends or other
visitors and ask for their observations about the person.
• Set up an appointment in
advance of visits to meet with
all care staff who have primary
responsibility for the person’s
care.

If you love football, but not
the NFL product as much, then
chances are you love the NCAA or
you’re like my big brother.
This week, bring on the school
pride with College Gameday from
ESPN, supportive alumni and
some of the wildest fans in all of
sports.
This week marks the official
return of college football. Football
fans are excited because it’s the
final pre-season weekend before
the regular season kick-off. This
week, they can start cheering on
their favorite college team as well.
As we head into the second year
of the college football playoff,
teams understand what they have
to do to get into the playoff.
In the old system, being ranked
number in the country was the
only guaranteed way of making the
National Championship, or if the
FBS committee decides to let you
in. Now, all teams have to do is be
in the top four nationally. Although
the rankings are still decided by
the FBS, it’s all about winning
enough to force them to put you in
the top four.
This year, coming off an exciting
previous season, college football
itself has never been more popular.
After an exciting FBS National
Championship victory, Ohio State
head coach Urban Meyer, star
quarterback Cardale Jones, and the
Ohio State Buckeyes look to repeat
and dominate the nation again.
The first week for the top 20
teams are usually “tune-up” games
for them to win by big margins
against smaller schools but the
game of the game will get all of
college football watching. Alabama is always at the top of the
rankings, they are ranked number
three heading into the season.
This week, they will start off
with an early test playing against
the number 20 ranked Wisconsin
Badgers. Although the Badgers
are starting off ranked 20, don’t
underestimate them as they end
up in the top 10 every year. It’s a
game that will kick off the season
with a bang.
Locally, UTSA will be facing a
top 25 FBS team. Our Roadrunners
will be taking on the number 22
ranked Arizona Wildcats Saturday
night. Although UTSA just misses
the top 100 ranking, their football
played Arizona last year and came
close to a victory. This is the best
chance for UTSA to beat a top-25
team.
Whatever game you watch this
weekend, be prepared for packed
grocery stores, the smell of BBQ
on grills at 10:30 in the morning,
and everybody’s television on
ESPN’s College Gameday. These
kids work hard to get to this point
in their football life. This weekend,
we might see the next Aaron Rodgers or Adrian Peterson. Simply,
welcome back College Football,
we have missed you dearly on
Saturdays.
NFL season is here
After half a year with no football Sundays and nothing to talk about Monday
morning at the office, the NFL season
is finally here. This season will kickoff
with the Patriots hosting the Steelers
this Thursday in Foxborough. Followed
by entertaining games next Sunday. The
sound of the Monday and Sunday Night
football themes will soothe the soul of
football fans.
Top five rankings features college football’s finest

The defending national champions Ohio State Buckeyes are
automatically ranked number
one in the pre-season polls.
Over the past three seasons,
the Buckeyes have a combined
for a recent 38-3 record, one
undefeated season in 2012 and
topped off with a national championship in 2014.
The Buckeyes have three
talented quarterbacks who are
capable of starting for the team,
Cardale Jones, Braxton Miller
and J.T. Barrett. Miller declared
he will play wide-receiver for
the Big Ten Champions that
leaves Jones and Barrett. Head
coach Urban Meyer expects the
two to play this season.
“I would anticipate that
throughout the course of year
we’ll play both quarterbacks,”
Meyer told reporters.
The Buckeyes backfield will
be a spot filled by another standout player, running back Ezekiel
Elliott. In his final three games,
rushed for at least 200 yards,
including his record setting 246
yard game against Oregon in the
National Championship.
Ranked number two in the
pre-season polls is TCU, a
school who was even considered
a contender last pre-season. The
Horned Frogs are coming off
of a 12-1 season and still feel
they were left out of the NCAA
playoff picture last season.
The Horned Frogs are playing
with a huge target on their back.
However, they prepared themselves on being “the hunted.”
The number three ranked
team is no surprise to many,
Alabama Crimson Tide seem
to always be ranked in the top
five every pre-season. For this
team a championship means a
successful season. Nevertheless, this team came up short in
the playoffs last season against
Ohio State and was dismantled
by the Oklahoma Sooners in the
Sugar bowl two seasons ago.
This team’s defense never has
worries on the defensive side
of the ball. The offense is what
draws questions especially after
the departure of wide receiver
Amari Cooper and running back
T.J. Yeldon.
ArDarius Stewart is projected
to lead the team in receiving and
running back Kenyan Drake
proved he could score from the
backfield as last year he ran
for 11 touchdowns. The starting has yet to be determined.

and amateur sports facilities,

AT&T Center. Freeman Coliseum and rodeo grounds are all

Visitor Tax is paid through a

Erik Jones wins Truck Series

Two weeks ago in the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
Alex Tagliani got turned out of
the lead by Regan Smith and lost
his shot at a win. In the NASCAR
Camping World Truck Series
Chevrolet Silverado 250 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park,
Tagliani had a chance to be the
one doing the turning.
Headling into turn 5B on the final lap, Tagliani says he was in a
position to push Erik Jones aside
and claimed victory for himself.
But he didn’t. Instead, Tagliani
held back as Jones cruised to his
second win of the season and
vaulted to the top of the NCWTS
point standings.
“If I would have stayed where
I was he would have been gone
in (Turn) 5B,” Tagliani said. “I
don’t drive that way. I just want
to continue the trend.”
Tagliani thought he would
have time to take more clean shot
at Jones through the final series
of turns, but a broken third gear
took that chance away. “It shredded completely,” he said. “It was
pretty much good all race. I felt
a couple of times it was kind of
scratchy on the downshift, but
no sign it was going to be bad.
As soon as I put third gear on
the back straight, it just went. I
put it in fourth and it just kind of
limped all the way back home.”
The 189-year-old Jones felt
the pressure from veteran road
course racer Tagliani down the
stretch, but maintained his concentration to become the first
driver to lead the entire last lap
of a NCWTS race at Canadian
Tire Motorsport Park.
“It was a blast,” Jones said of
the race. “It was nerve-wracking.
It’s a little intense when you’ve
got a guy like that running you
down for 15 laps.” It turned
out that Jones and Tagliani had
shared a parade truck before the
race and had a philosophical
discussion about racing with
respect. Tagliani told Jones he
knew he was in a heated battle
and that Jones didn’t have to
worry about him trying the same
thing Smith had done to him at
Mid-Ohio.
“We had a pretty long talk
about racing people the way you
want to be raced,” Jones said.
“I’ve never been one to want to
move somebody to win a race,
and he hasn’t, either, It’s nice to
see that respect, especially from
a veteran like that to me. It’s not
something he had to do. It means
a lot to me that he did.”
Jones worked hard to improve
his road course craft coming into
this weekend. Time spent at a
pair of driving schools paid off,
as did a strong effort by the team
to improve their truck. “We had
a good truck last year, and we
were able to do some improving
on our Tundra to get it to where
it needed to be for this year,”
Jones said.
“I was able to improve on myself and fix some of my mistakes
this year as well and get a little
bit better.” Matt Crafton finished
in second place, which keeps him
second in the point standings
behind Jones, who now holds
a three-point advantage. Tyler
Reddick, the standing leader entering the race, placed 19th and
is now third (15 points behind
Jones) in the championship hunt.
Ben Kennedy, Daniel Hemric,
and Tagliani rounded out the
top five in Sunday’s race. Cole
Custer mounted one of the strongest challenges to Jones in the
late going, but contact between
he and Tagliani took him out of
the running with 11 laps to go.
He ended up in 10th.

However, the Princess of Asturias Foundation stressed that the
order has kept working to reopen
the two medical centers through
training medical staff to curb the
virus outbreak, coordination with
local authorities and other international organizations.
This year marks the first time
the prize, which bears the name
of the heir to the throne, has been
called the “Princess” of Asturias
Award, as it was changed from
“Prince” when Princess Leonor’s
father, King Felipe VI, ascended
the throne last year.
The Princess of Asturias Awards
are a series of annual prizes awarded in Spain by the Princess of
Asturias Foundation in eight categories: arts, communication and
humanities, international cooperation, literature, social sciences,
sports, technical and scientific
research, and concord.
Each winner receives a prize of
50,000 euros (roughly $56,000) and
a replica statuette designed by the
late Spanish sculptor Joan Miro.

Labor Day is the holiday that
signals the end of summer and
many families will head to the
water to cool off.
The Texas Department of
Family and Protective Services
(DFPS) urges Texans to help
keep the holiday a happy one by
watching kids around water at
all times.
“Labor Day is the last big
weekend of summer, so we can’t
afford to let down our guard this
weekend,” says DFPS Commissioner John Specia. “Too many
children have already lost their
lives.”
Texas is on pace to surpass last
year’s total of 73 child drownings, but is well below the alltime high of 90 set in 2011. 68
children have drowned in Texas
so far this year. The Dallas-Fort
Worth area leads the state with
25 child drownings this year,
followed by the Houston area
with 15.
Unfortunately, drowning is one
of the leading causes of accidental death among young children
and most of these tragedies happen from Memorial Day weekend
to Labor Day. Swimming pools
are by far the most likely place
where children drown. This year,
32 Texas children and teens have
drowned in swimming pools, 23
in lakes, ponds and other natural
waterways, eight died in bathtubs and five drowned in various
locations.
Toddlers and preschoolers are
the most at risk, but this year an
unusually high number of teenagers (10) have also drowned.
Children under a year old most
often drown indoors (bathtubs,

outdoors. Most young children
who drown are in the care of one
or both parents at the time and
are out of sight for less than five

Here is a list of basic water
safety tips to follow this Labor
Day:
Inside the house
Never leave small children
alone near any container of water.
This includes toilets, tubs, aquariums or mop buckets.
Keep bathroom doors closed
and secure toilet lids with lid
locks.
Never leave a baby alone in a
bath for any reason. Get the things
you need before running water.
Infants can drown in any amount
of water. If you must leave the
room, take the child with you.
Warn babysitters or caregivers about the dangers of water
to young children and stress the
need for constant supervision.
Make sure small children cannot leave the house through pet
doors or unlocked doors and reach
pools or hot tubs.
Outside the house
Never leave children alone
around water whether it is in a
pool, wading pool, drainage ditch,
creek, pond or lake.
Constantly watch children who
are swimming or playing in water.
They need an adult or certified
lifeguard watching and within
reach.
Secure access to swimming
pools. Use fences, self-closing
and latching gates and water surface alarms.
Completely remove the pool
cover when the pool is in use.
Store water toys away from the
water when not in use, so they
don’t attract a small child.
Don’t assume young children
will use good judgment and caution around water.
Be ready for emergencies. Keep
emergency telephone numbers
handy and learn CPR.
Find out if your child’s friends
or neighbors have pools.

San Antonio doctors’
philanthropic efforts bring smiles
In a city of 1.5 million people, good deeds happen all
the time, but unfortunately
we don’t often get to hear
about them, which is why it’s
especially refreshing to learn
about the recent philanthropic
work performed by Dr. Edward
Camacho of Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio and oral
and maxillo facial surgeon, Dr.
Robert Lemke.
It all started with a young
woman by the name of Crystal
Galindo who visited Dr. Camacho to inquire about veneers,
but in reality she needed far
more than just veneers. In
fact, Crystal needed tens of
thousands of dollars of restorative and orthodontic work to
fix a bilateral cleft palate that
normally would have been corrected before adulthood.
“In America, this kind of
deformity is typically handled
very early in life, often at the
government’s expense. Crystal
started in that program and then
sadly her journey was interrupted. When I met her, her
upper jaw was actually in three
pieces, being held together
by some gum tissue. It would
move from side-to-side, and
when she told me she wouldn’t
even smile for her wedding
photos, it was heartbreaking,”
explained Dr. Camacho.
“As a child I was teased and
always stared at, but it was
one of those things where I
thought I had to live with what
I had. This is what I need to
love,” shared Galindo, and
she did, that is until she met
June Camacho, Dr. Camacho’s
compassionate wife and office
manager.
It was clear right away that
Crystal needed a lot more than
veneers and that her insurance
would not cover the bulk of it,
but June and Crystal formed a
special connection.
“June called me a few days
after my initial consultation
and told me they came up with
a plan to help me. They even
found a doctor, Dr. Lemke, who
was willing to fix the bone in
the palate where there was still
a hole,” said Galindo.
Dr. Lemke was able to get
one of his dental suppliers to
donate approximately $8,000
worth of bone grafting material,
and as someone who knew and
respected Dr. Camacho, was
also willing to donate the surgical procedures necessary prior
to orthodontic correction and
restorative treatment.
Now, two years and several
surgeries and procedures later,
Crystal can confidently smile
for the first time in her life.
“I feel so grateful and blessed
that someone wanted to help
me,” said Galindo. “I think it’s
changed a lot in my life. Now,
when I take my kids to school,
I’m not the weird-looking mom.
I was always afraid my kids
would be embarrassed by me.”
For Dr. Camacho, the experience was, “rewarding on
many levels. Crystal is just a
really nice person who had the
misfortune of being born with
a physical problem, but she’s a
sharp, responsible person. She
was a dream to work with. She
also worked to pay what she
could, and we were happy to
help out where we could.”
Dr. Lemke added, “It’s really
rewarding to see the changes,
and now, her beautiful smile!”

the National Arts Program have
teamed up to organize the VIA
Employee Art Exhibit 2015.
This exhibit showcases the
artistic talents of VIA’s employees and their family members.
The exhibit is on display in
The Grand at 123 N. Medina
St. through September 25. The
display is free and open to the
public, and it is open Monday
through Friday from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m.
The VIA exhibit includes recent artworks produced by more
than 120 agency employees and
immediate family members
organized into amateur, intermediate, professional, youth (12
years of age and younger), and
teen classifications.
All mediums were accepted.
Professional artists and visual
art professionals judged the artworks submitted to the exhibit,
and prizes were awarded during a ceremony at the opening reception, which was held
August 29.
The purpose of the National
Arts Program is to identify the
indigenous visual artistic talents
of the United States of America.
The program works through
employees (and their families)
of municipalities, counties,
and commercial organizations.

La competencia finalizó en claro empate por lo que espectadores les aplaudieron su espectacular esfuerzo. Los integrantes de los equipos, posteriormente, fueron invitados a presenciar el partido entre el equipo anfitrión y el club visitante Lynx de Minnesota. La gerencia general, a cargo
del entrenador en jefe Dan Hughes, una vez más en la temporada cumplió con su deber de reconocer públicamente el servicio militar de hombres y mujeres que orgullosamente visten el uniforme
de las Fuerzas Armadas de los Estados Unidos.

Float fest 2015 in review

The sophomore year of the Float Fest music festival has
come and gone—but not before hundreds of tubers and
music fans crowed the Cool Water Ranch in Martindale,
Texas.
Patrons were treated to two stages, rows of local food
trucks and unique merchandise for bands such as: The
Digital Wild, Sam Lao, Paul Wall, Bun B, Ghostland
Observatory and Phantogram. The intimate setting was
more than adequate for festival fans to float the San Mar
cos River and take a respite from the water to catch bands
that don’t often make it this far to South Texas.
With ever-increasing attendance, the third installment
of the annual festival only promises to get bigger with an
expanded line-up and more tubers getting their fill of their
favorite regional and nationally lauded bands.

A fun-filled Labor Day starts with safety, then food

Labor Day is a holiday that
helps you unwind and not dread
that Monday is coming along too
quickly.
It is a time to rest and enjoy the
company of your family, friends
and pets. Food is also a big part of
this relaxing holiday. When you
gather around the main course
of the day, you cannot help but
appreciate the person who spent
hours on the grill making all of the
mouth-watering creations.
However, if you want to be
the one in charge of grilling all
the delicious food this upcoming
holiday, La Prensa would like to
help and get you started. Thanks
to the Food Network, here are
some great pointers to look out
for when you begin to prepare
the grill:
1. Gas grilling should be done
outside at least 10 feet away from
the house.
2. Check all connections for
leaks by turning on the cylinder
valve and spraying the connec
tions with a solution made by
mixing equal amounts of liquid
dish soap and water. If bubbles
appear, those connections need to
be tightened or replaced.
3. Keep the grill away from
heavy foot traffic. It’s also highly
recommended to keep children,
pets and outdoor games like foot
ball away from the grill.
4. Always place lighters and
matches away from the grill and
children.
5. Wear fitted clothing. While
you may be warm, it is safer to
wear long-sleeved shirts, long
pants and closed shoes.
6. Never leave a lit grill unat
tended.
7. Before you put anything on
the grill, get the grill hot, and
scrub off any residue with a clean
wire-bristled brush.
8. Use long-handed tools to
avoid leaning over the grill when
flipping over burgers and other
meats.
9. Create separate areas on the
grill for raw meat and cooked
foods to prevent cross-contam
ination.
10. Invest in an instant-read
thermometer. Making sure the
meat and poultry are cooked to
the proper temperatures is vital.

As you learn to provide your
family with delicious food and
not the meat in the back burner,

a recipe to enjoy. After studying
the tips provided by the Food Net
work, here is the Spice Rubbed
Ribs with Chipotle-Honey Glaze,
courtesy of Bobby Flay, that will
leave your guests salivating for
more.
Ingredients
Rub:
1/2 cup ancho chili powder
1/4 cup Spanish paprika
1/4 cup freshly ground black
pepper
1/4 cup dry mustard
1/4 cup kosher salt
1/4 cup ground coriander
2 tablespoons dried oregano
2 tablespoons ground cumin
1 1/2 tablespoons chile de arbol
1/4 cup canola oil
2 racks country ribs, 12 ribs
each, membrane removed
Charcoal briquettes
Chimney starter and newspaper
4 cups hickory or oak wood
chips, soaked in cold water for at
least 60 minutes
1 1/2 cups clover honey
3 heaping tablespoons chipotle
in adobo puree
Parsley sprigs, for garnish
Chipotle honey glaze
Clover honey, to taste
Chipotle in adobo, pureed, to
taste
Salt and pepper
Directions
Combine all spices in a small

bowl. Brushes both sides of the
racks with oil and liberally rub
with the spice mixture.
Wrap in plastic and refrigerate
for at least 12 hours. Remove
the ribs from the refrigerator
45 minutes before smoking to
allow them to come to room
temperature.
You will need to stuff sev
eral sheets of newspaper in the
bottom of a charcoal chimney.
Fill the chimney to the top with
charcoal briquettes. Remove top
rack from the barbecue. Put the
chimney on the lower barbecue
rack. Light the newspaper and let
the charcoal burn until the ash is
gray, about 20 minutes.
Open bottom barbecue vent.
Turn out the hot charcoal onto
1 half of bottom rack. Using a
metal spatula, spread charcoal to
cover approximately 1/3 of rack
and scatter half of the soaked
wood chips over the charcoal.
Put a loaf pan with water onto
the coals.
Put the top rack on the bar
becue. Put in the ribs, rub side
down, on the grill over indirect
heat. Coals should be off to one
side. Slowly cook the ribs until
tender, adding more charcoal if
needed, about 1 1/2 hours.
Chipotle Honey Glaze:
Whisk all of the ingredients
together in a small bowl.
Begin brushing the glaze on the
ribs during the last 30 minutes of
cooking.
Put the ribs on a baking sheet;
brush with a little more of the
glaze and let stand 10 minutes.
Transfer the ribs to a cutting
board and cut between the bones
to separate the ribs. Arrange
the ribs on a serving platter and
serve.

Bruno Bichir: “Este es el huevo que derramó el gallinero”
El actor Bruno Bichir que da
su voz a Toto, el personaje de la
película de animación mexicana
“Un gallo con muchos huevos”,
que llega este fin de semana a los
cines de San Antonio, platicó con
La Prensa.

En medio de la descomunal
competencia de películas animadas de Disney y Pixar ¿por qué
darse el chance de al cine y ver
“Un gallo con muchos huevos”
(Brave Little Rooster)?
Porque: Es una película latina.
Es en español (con subtítulos
en inglés). Porque se desarrolla
en un pueblito con un nombre
sin igual –“Tepizcoelhoyo”– y
porque los personajes son unos
huevitos que tienen un humor
tan picarón (ok, apropiado para
niños), que sacan carcajadas.
“Porque se trata de un gallito
que ahora que sí hoy se pone muy
gallito y da la pelea, justamente
es un peso pluma contra un peso
welter y estamos ganando y eso
me parece brutal”, sintetiza emocionado el actor mexicano Bruno
Bichir que da voz a Toto, el pollo
de patitas flacas y alas débiles,
a quien se le llegó el turno de
hinchar plumas cuando el rancho
donde vive está a punto de irse a
manos de otro malvado ranchero.
Además, la película “habla
tanto del pueblo latino, de la

sangre latina, de lo que somos de
cómo idiosincracia y cosmovisión
ante el mundo y la vida, que estoy
seguro que se va a correr la voz
inmediatamente”, añadió el actor.
Y pues sí, “Un gallo con
muchos huevos”, producto del
ingenio de la compañía de animación mexicana Huevo Cartoon,
es la tercera película de una
trilogía que ha sido un éxito en
México y que ahora por primera
vez, ya convertidos en gallitos,
se lanzan al mercado estadounidense.
Recién hace dos semanas abrió
en dos mil salas en México.
“¿Puedes creer eso? Es fantástico,
ha sido un fenómeno”, exclama
Bichir.
En esta nueva entrega las voces
de Bruno Bichir, Carlos Espejel,
Omar Chaparro, Maite Perroni,
Angélica Vale, Sergio Sendel y
Ninel Conde ponen la acción y
el picante en una aventura que,
para Bichir, trae un gran mensaje.
“Que un frágil puede dar la
batalla, puede luchar por la justicia, puede luchar por los seres
que más ama y que están indefensos…”, explica el actor. Además
añade que para él ha sido una
gran experiencia trabajar en las
tres películas de Huevo Cartoon
(“Una película de huevos”, “Otra
película de Huevos y un Pollo”
y ahora “Un gallo con muchos
huevos”).
“Los hermanos Riva Palacios
(creadores y productores) me
escogieron… Me llena de orgullo
ser mexicano y formar parte de
un proyecto tan importante y
hermoso, de primero orden y
divertido”.
Personajes
En la odisea de Toto en convertirse en gallo de pelea le acompañan, por supuesto, los huevo
personajes. Por ejemplo el de
Willy (Carlos Espejel), uno de los
preferidos de Bichir “porque ha
sido el acompañante de toda mi
vida de mi personaje, me parece
fantástico”. También el de Bibi
(Angélica Vale) porque “lo hace
divinamente bien y tiene un don
para la comedia”.
Alguien que hace su debut en
un personaje muy a la medida de
“Bombón Asesino” es la cantante
grupera Ninel Conde.
“Ninel Conde tiene unos cachetes increíbles, muy rosaditos,
llenos de rubor y sale de pavo real,
es que solamente ella puede ser un
ave tan espléndida y tan hermosa,
y canta de forma tan espléndida
que Toto queda embelesado”, ríe
picaronamente Bichir.
También destaca el vozarrón
de villano de Sergio Sendel en el
gallo de pelea Bankivoide.
Y “me guste o no Omar Chaparro se lleva la película, es
un gran comediante, actor, ser
humano, hace las delicias de su
personaje (Patín Patán), le saca
el jugo”.
Además, Bichir admite que su
personaje de Toto le recordó un
poquita su adolescencia.
“Es un amor. Me recuerda a mí
mismo hace dos días ¡Ja ja jaj!
Soy exactamente ese gallo, sigo
pasando por las mismas, claro que
yo ya estoy grandecito, ya debía
haber aprendido algo.
¿Cómo en la escena donde la
pollita está flirteando con Toto y
él no agarra la onda?
“¡¡Ja ja jajaja!! ¿Oye, qué me
conoces o qué ondas! ¡Qué estás
adivinando! Exactamente esa escena en particular me hace eco y
se me enchinan no precisamente
las orejas y sí, se me enchina
el título de la película. En eso
demando a los hermanos Riva
Palacios por hacer una biopic
no autorizada porque me están
sacando las plumas al sol”, ríe.
Bruno Bichir (1967) tiene en
su hoja de trabajo telenovelas
con Televisa y Televisión Azteca.
Además de más 25 películas en
México, incluyendo “El callejón
de los milagros” (1995) junto
a Salma Hayek, “La toma de la
embajada”, “La mujer de mi hermano”, “Ciudades Oscuras”. Es
hermano de Demian Bichir (“A
Better Life”) y ha ganado varios
premios Ariel (los equivalentes a
los Óscar en México).
Bichir destaca a otros personajes como el tocino. “Es divino,
porque no habla, porque es un
híbrido entre la vida y muerte,
procesado, un poco bizarro, noble
y bueno”. Y los tacuaches “la
gente los adora por lo rasposos
que son”.
Así que con “Un gallo con
muchos huevos” hay humor
pícaro “pero bajo ninguna circunstancia se pretende agredir a
nadie, hacer escarnio, bullying
público ni nada, corre en nuestra
sangre, igual que el maíz, el chile,
el tequila, es parte de nosotros”,
dice Bichir, esta vez un poquitín
serio.
“Un gallo con muchos huevos”

Una canción de ya estar harta
de “un bato” que no quiere nada
serio, un nuevo disco para 2016
y los “trump-etazos” son algunas
de las cosas de las que Miguel
“Oso” Ramírez, percusionista
del grupo chicano de Los Ángeles, La Santa Cecilia, platicó con
La Prensa. A continuación un
extracto de esta plática.
LP: ¿“I won´t cry for you es
la primera cucharada de un
nuevo álbum?
Miguel “Oso” Ramírez: Así
es, el disco se va a llamar “Buenaventura”, y la canción se llama
“I won´t cry for you”, es una
canción en inglés, una fusión
de música jazz con norteño, con
swing, con un poquito de todo.
Estamos muy emocionados y la
letra habla de una muchacha que
ya está harta de su bato y quiere
un bato nuevo ¡jeje!
LP: ¿Y quién es el autor de
la letra?
MR: Bueno, Marisoul y Claudia Brant.
LP: ¿Y la letra se refiere a la
experiencia de alguna de ella o
en general?
MR: En general. A todos nos
ha pasado que nos juntamos con
una pareja y luego la pareja no
resulta ser lo que pensábamos y
“pa’ la puerta”.
LP: ¿Y tú como hombre qué
piensas del mensaje, porque es
una canción que la canta una
mujer?
MR: Ah, claro, yo como hombre también he estado en alguna
situación que la he cagado, ¿no?
¡Ja ja ja! O me he portado mal
y lo merezco, yo me he sentido
igual con una mujer.
LP: No sé si tendrás hijas,
pero ¿qué les dirías en relación
a eso?
MR: ¡Ay, ay, ay! ¡Qué sean
fuertes como su madrina Marisoul!
LP: “I won´t cry for you” es
en inglés ¿pero irán a hacer
una versión en español?
MR: Es posible una versión
en español si la gente empieza
a adquirirla. Nosotros no nos
planteamos si la canción va a
ser en inglés o en español porque
para nosotros hablar en inglés o
en español es igual que escribir.
Como salga la idea va saliendo.
LP: Quiere decir que es una
ventaja ser completamente
bilingüe porque te puedes
manejar perfectamente en dos
mundos…
MR: Sí, a nosotros nos encanta la verdad y pensamos que
es algo que se debe celebrar, no

During the three-day celebration, the Henry B. Gonzalez
Convention Center will feature a
wide array of celebrities, cosplayers and comic fans.
In light of the fast-approaching
convention, the San Antonio
Public Library hosted a meet
and greet with award-winning
illustrator John Picacio.
Picacio spoke about some of
his career highlights, which included cover artwork for STAR
TREK and the X-MEN.
Despite having no formal education in art other than a semester-long class in college, the San
Antonio native is one of the most
acclaimed American artists in the
realm of science fiction, fantasy
and horror publishing.
Picacio has won two Hugo
Awards for Best Professional
Artist, the World Fantasy Award,
the Locus Award, two international Horror Guild Awards and
seven Chesley Awards. Currently, he is nominated for four
more Chesley Awards.
Picacio earned a Bachelor of
Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992,
but while working as a full-time
architect, he was self-publishing
comics. He illustrated his first
book in 1996, but didn’t leave
his profession as an architect until
five years later.
“It wasn’t until 2001 that I got
the nerve to quit completely and
no longer have a day-job,” Picacio told La Prensa. “It was very
risky, but it’s the best decision
in my life.”
His wide array of successful
book covers has earned him
international recognition, but

according to Picacio, his most
monumental and important project is currently in the works.
The project involves recreating Lotería, the classic game of
Mexican bingo.
“It was an opportunity to do
something that hadn’t been done
and it was also something I wanted to give back to my culture,”
Picacio said.
He released the first set of
11 cards in 2014 and hopes to
complete a second set before the
end of 2015. Eventually, he will
complete the full 54-card game
featuring his own vision.
The first set of 11 cards includes La Sirena, El Pescado, La
Rosa, El Arpa, El Paraguas, La
Luna, El Venado, El Corazón,
El Mundo, La Escalera and La
Calavera.

mexicanos ha presentado un
videojuego que permite arrojar
balones y botellas al precandidato presidencial estadounidense
Donald Trump y aspira a convertirse en una forma de canalizar
la ira de muchos mexicanos ante
los comentarios ofensivos del
magnate contra los migrantes.
En “Trumpealo”, el jugador
puede arrojar zapatos y botellas,
entre otros objetos, al precandidato republicano cuando dice
alguno de sus controvertidos y
recientes mensajes, entre ellos
que muchos mexicanos que
emigran a Estados Unidos son
ladrones o violadores.
“La idea nació cuando vimos
que era un tema de mucho interés
para nuestros hermanos latinos
en Estados Unidos. Esto nos
llevó a crear el juego a modo de
desacuerdo con el personaje”,
explicó a Efe Cristian Quiroz,
director de operaciones de Karaokulta, la compañía artífice de
esta propuesta.
La finalidad del juego, una
aplicación para móvil que saldrá
a la venta en unas dos semanas,
es sumar puntos a base de tirar
a Donald Trump desde balones
a bolas de bolera, botellas o los
tradicionales nopales (una hoja
de cactus) mexicanos.
Ello, acompañado de una entretenida musiquilla de cuerda.
“México no es nuestro amigo”, suelta el magnate mientras
se mueve por un escenario de
teatro con dos pancartas que lo
presentan como presidente de
Estados Unidos colgadas a su
espalda.
Vestido de traje o disfrazado
cómicamente, esquiva los objetos que el usuario decide
lanzarle.
Si se le echan flores o billetes,
se da la partida por terminada
y Trump, como ganador, sale
todavía más enriquecido y endiosado de la tarima.
“El fin del juego es que él no
pueda salir del escenario y se
le puedan seguir arrojando objetos”, describió Quiroz, quien
especificó que tras el periodo de
prueba, el juego será descargable
para los sistemas Android e iOS.
Anticipándose a críticas por la
violencia presente en el juego,
afirmó que este nació con la intención de “divertir” y que, por
la respuesta y difusión recibida,
tiene constancia que “mucha
gente” respalda el proyecto.
“Es la opinión que tenemos los
mexicanos ante este precandidato a la (elección) presidencial.
Se puede tomar como una broma
o una anécdota”, aseveró Quiroz,
que forma parte de esta pequeña
compañía de jóvenes programadores y diseñadores afincados
en Guadalajara, capital del occidental estado de Jalisco.
El magnate inmobiliario no
ha dejado de generar polémica
con sus comentarios sobre inmi-
gración desde que, el pasado 16
de junio, anunció su candidatura
a la nominación del Partido Republicano.
Trump defiende la deportación
de más de once millones de
indocumentados y la construcción de un muro en su frontera
sur para bloquear los flujos de
inmigración clandestina.
Además ha amenazado con
embargar remesas “derivadas
de salarios ilegales” enviadas
por inmigrantes, ha calificado
de criminales y violadores a los
mexicanos y ha lanzado comentarios despectivos sobre los que
llama “bebés ancla” que tienen
las indocumentadas en Estados
Unidos y reciben la ciudadanía
al nacer.
En México, no es la primera
vez que Trump y su inconfundible tupé rubio reciben “golpes”
-en la ficción- propinados por
parte de la ciudadanía.
Hace unos meses, en la norteña ciudad fronteriza de Reynosa
una empresa elaboró una piñata
con la imagen del magnate que
se vendió como churros y permitió que niños y adultos desahogaran su rabia contra Trump
a bastonazos.
Ello mismo aconteció entre la
comunidad latina de San Diego,
en California, que convirtió en
éxito de ventas otra figura de
cartón piedra de este precandidato republicano con un marcado
discurso antiinmigratorio.

LP: También el concepto
visual de este primer sencillo
es retro ¿lo van a mantener en
el siguiente álbum?
MR: No, no necesariamente,
pero la estética de ese video
sí se dio así para esa canción,
porque tiene ese sentido retro de
los años 30, un aire feminista…
Para nosotros es importante
tratar de encontrar lo visual y
mezclarlo muy bien con lo que
es el sonido y la intención de la
música.
LP: ¿Y cómo artista hispano qué piensas del revuelo
mediático que está haciendo
Donald Trump?
MR: Primero que nada yo
pienso que está completamente
mal lo que ha dicho. Yo creo que
todos sabemos que no es verdad
todo eso. Desafortunadamente,
hay mucha gente racista en los
Estados Unidos y es una realidad que vivimos. Yo creo que
la mayoría gente progresista de
Estados Unidos sabe que no es
verdad. Estoy agradecido que
pasó porque unió a los latinos
en general para unirnos en esta
causa de que sabemos quiénes
somos, qué merecemos y sabemos que debemos estar en este
país con dignidad. Yo creo que

LP: ¿Y tú como hispano
nacido en Los Ángeles viviste
experiencias de racismo y discriminación?
MR: Sí, sí, yo creo que toda
persona de color que crece en
los Estados Unidos vive esa
experiencia de discriminación
por la policía, por la migración,
a veces no se nos dan las mismas
oportunidades. A veces este
tipo de discriminación afecta
mucho nuestra mentalidad como
jóvenes, pensamos que no somos
iguales y que no merecemos lo
mismo, que no somos capaces
de lo mismo, entonces nos afecta
en muchos niveles, pero siempre
hay que luchar contra eso y demostrar que hay otra realidad,
otra manera de ser y vivir y de
expresar.
LP: ¿Y La Santa Cecilia es
un grupo que le dedicaría una
canción a Donald Trump?
MR: Yo creo que la gente sabe
cómo nos sentimos con lo de
Donald Trump; no gastaríamos
una canción para dedicársela a
él, usaríamos nuestra energía
para dedicarle una canción a
nuestra gente y a lo bonito que
somos y a dónde vamos. Hay
muchas cosas más profundas
que las pendejadas que dice
Donald Trump.
La Santa Cecilia es una banda
méxico-americana nacida en Los
Ángeles. Todos sus integrantes
son de origen hispano, de clase
trabajadora, completamente
bilingües y multiculturales,
que se formaron como músicos
callejeros. En 2014 ganaron el
premio Grammy por Best Latin
Rock, Urban or Alternative Album. Deben su nombre a Santa
Cecilia, la patrona de la música.
Sus composiciones mezclan
cumbia mexicana, polka, banda,
norteño, tango, merengue, jazz,
swing… con letras que narran la
vida de indocumentados como
en “El Hielo”, el consumismo
como en “La Monedita” o en
el video de su cover de “Strawberry Fields Forever” cuentan la
travesía de las fresas recogidas
en California por hispanos hasta
las mesas. “El Valor”, “Noche y
Citas”, “Treinta Días” y “Someday New” son sus álbumes. El
nuevo, “Buenaventura” traerá
canciones que hablarán sobre los

violencia en Estados Unidos y
corrupción en Latinoamérica,
entre otros. De acuerdo a la
revista web LAWeekly, “La
Calaverita” será el próximo
single a lanzarse en septiembre,

“I started writing vignettes and
realized I was starting to shift
towards being a writer and an
illustrator,” Picacio said.
The final Lotería project will
include 54 stand-alone drawing and stories with an overall
structure that connects all of the
pieces.
“It’s the biggest challenge of
my career, it’s almost terrifying
because you are risking so much,
but I believe in it,” Picacio said.
The illustrator added that the
intent behind all of his work is
to create something that connects
with the audience.
“In the end, no matter how dark
or how grim or how dramatic the
works that I do are, I hope they
give people hope,” Picacio told
La Prensa. “I hope they connect
them to a vision that is not just
mine, but that it belongs to them.

Giant sand Godzilla
installed in Tokyo park
EFE - A park in Tokyo has
installed a giant Godzilla made
of 50 tons of sand, in yet another
tribute to the radioactive monster
which has been named one of its
tourism ambassadors.
The 11.8 feet tall statue, installed this week at the park in
Shinjuku, is the work of Japanese
sculptor Toshihiko Hosaka who
used sand brought from Tateyama,
Chiba prefecture, located east of
Tokyo.
Only the head of the monster has
been built, with intricate details
of its fierce teeth, hard and rough
skin, and penetrating eyes, which
Hosaka made using spoons and
brushes, Asahi newspaper said.
Hosaka also created a sand
statue of the Tokyo Metropolitan
Government Building in front of
the famous monster’s head, along
with 10 monsters, at the base, that
Godzilla has fought during over 60
years of his life.
The work is a part of Shinjuku
Creators Festa 2015, an artistic
event in the Japanese capital, and
will remain on display at the park
until Sept. 27.
In April, Godzilla was named
tourism ambassador of Shinjuku
Ward, where a life-size head of the
monster is on display at a building
owned by the Toho production

UTSA beats out 96 universities for
campus party thrown by Victoria’s Secret

Last week, UTSA students,
faculty and even President
Ricardo Romo were seen going about their daily routines
around campus, except that they
were steadily and rapidly ‘tapping’ away at their smart phone
screens for the final competition
in the “Pink Nation Campus
Showdown”.
Every year, women’s lingerie conglomerate Victoria’s
Secret hosts the PINK Campus
Showdown where 97 universities around the nation compete
for a campus party thrown by
Victoria’s Secret that includes
a special performance by a Top
40 musician.
Last year’s winner, University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) had a huge bash
thrown on their campus grounds
and had a special performance
by Taylor Swift and 2013’s
winner, University of Central
Florida (UCF) had rapper Flo
Rida as their special performer.
The annual competition began
on August 26 where 97 “PINK
Collegiate schools” competed
in the “Qualifying Challenge”
where universities participated
in various events and tasks to
earn “Power PINK points”.
The top 25 schools who earned
the most points were able to go
onto participate in three rounds
of social media tasks pertaining
to their universities such as “Insta Love” where the school with
the most “likes” on a photo of
the competing schools’ logo on
the @PINKCampusShowdown

On September 3 – 4, the final
round consisted of Louisiana
State University (LSU), University of Nevada Las Vegas
(UNLV), Oregon State University (OSU) and University
of Texas San Antonio (UTSA)
where the challenge was simple,
download the PINK app onto
your smartphone or tablet and
tap away at the button with your
university’s logo.
During the 24 hour period,
students were in a frenzy tapping away and as time progressed talks of ‘tapping parties’ emerged as well as video
of UTSA faculty multi-tasking
between work and tapping
as well as video of President
Romo tapping away among the
students.
By Friday morning, first time
competators UTSA had left
LSU, UNLV and OSU in the
dust and had won the ‘tap off’
by a landslide, a combined total
of 367,598,462 points. No word
on who the special performer
will be, but an RSVP for the
party opened immediately after
the competition ended.

Henry Brun and The Latin Playerz Orchestra concert and dance
for their 25th Anniversary CD

Conga dynamo Henry Brun
lives by the authenticity, dynamics and “cadencia” of the music he
plays. Born in the Bronx to Puerto
Rican parents, Henry started
playing the congas at age seven.
By the time he was 11, he was
playing professionally. While listening to and being influenced by
Latin music pioneers such as Tito
Puente, Patato, Buyú, Mongo and
Candido, Henry developed his
own unique style and technique.
His expertise includes congas,
bongos, timbales and the ethnic
percussion instruments of Africa,
Brazil and the Middle East.
Henry traveled around the
world while performing with
the U.S. Air Force’s international band, “Tops in Blue.”
This allowed him to expand his
knowledge of global rhythms and
provided the stage for him to work
with legends such as Maynard
Ferguson, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball
and several others.
In 1989, Henry created The
Latin Playerz, an ensemble that
incorporates a variety of Latin
styles with rhythm and blues,
swing and jazz. They’ve become
a touring force, popular in the
United States and around the
world. The Latin Playerz are
a three-time winner of Univision’s annual “Latin Jazz Band
of the Year.” The Playerz’ album
“Rhythms and Reeds… A Tribute
to the Master Duke Ellington”
was named one of the Top Twenty
Latin Jazz releases of 2009.
