That means that you must have qualified for it by running at least 3 SARRC races during the 2014 competition year. And – because it will not be open to all CFR drivers, no CFR Regional Championship Points will be awarded. Note that the Enduro does not have any prequalification requirements. Also – the Wings & Things group will have 2 race groups but will be combined for qualifying sessions. Camping in the Speedway will be allowed at the SARRC Invitational Challenge on September 26-28. The Geico Shores RV area will be open with RV hookups for $50 for the weekend. There will also be an area available for tent August 2014 camping. Camping will not be allowed inside the garage area fencing as the garage area will be locked at night. October Sebring Short Course Event – October 18 & 19 – this event will not be a 2015 SARRC. Instead, it will be the “CFR Championship Weekend”. The event format will consist of a practice, qualifying, sprint race, and feature race with the sprint race counting as an additional qualifying session for the feature race. The feature race will award double points towards the 2014 CFR Championship. There will be victory laps and podium celebrations for the feature races. Wings & Things will have 2 race groups that will be combined for practice and qualifying. The Turkey Trot will be our first 2015 SARRC. 5 District 1 New Club Members Donald Caesar Noell Caldwell Sam Cappello Michael Davis Carole Harrison Cole Hoot Brian Johnson John Lambert James Lyle For more information please feel free to contact me at any time, contact info on back page. Be safe out there! 7 SARRC - Daytona Double by Kevin Crain What a great weekend, well for most of it... Any outdoor event in Florida, especially in August, the peak of the “wet season,” runs the risk of storms. The weather, albeit hot, was about as good as you could ask for - until after the lunch break on Sunday. With nearly 250 cars and a tight Daytona schedule, things were busy, but well organized, allowing the six races on Saturday to run with the final race of the day starting within 30 minutes of schedule. I couldn’t help but notice all the “Lee & Me” yellow decals, signs, etc. upon rolling into the infield through the turn 1 tunnel. Lee “Numbers” Hill is running for Area 3 Director. Robin Langlotz, after six years of service, is stepping down. Lee seemed to have lots of support as, upon my visit to the garages, there were decals everywhere... Squeak Kennedy, driving a Ford Mustang, set a record for class T2 of 2:07.696 but finished second in class to Tom Ellis of Sunrise, FL and his Ford FR500. My eyes though were glued to the Racelink sponsored GT1 1963 Ford Falcon driven by polesitter, Bill Riddell. He led wire to wire in Group 1 and ran the best time of all classes Saturday with a 1:51.811. The car demands the eye’s attention and seemed glued to the surface as it worked through the corners. Riddell would again run the best lap time of the day on Sunday posting a 1:51.702 but a broken wheel bearing only allowed completion of seven laps. The action began right away. First lap, green flag seeing Riddell leading all through the road course turn one with Juan Vento in the Interstate Batteries Chevrolet Corvette and Bryan Collyer next to Qualifying runs were underway him in the Crunch Construction upon my arrival on a beautiful Chevrolet Monte Carlo. They work Saturday morning. Admittedly, into the s-turn 2 with Ormond this was my first visit to the track in Beach’s Bobby Kennedy coming which a non-NASCAR event was strong in the Bemco Fabrication running and it was a blast! Ford Mustang with Adam Andretti Having access to such great crossing over behind Kennedy, viewing places was a huge plus going to the inside, coming into Action in Turn 3 kept crowd on their feet. versus sitting way up in the turn three. Then things went grandstands watching most of the sideways for Collyer who found the rear of the car action on the big screen. My favorite viewing was coming out from under him. Whether he had any help definitely in turn 3, the International Horseshoe; the with that, I could not say... bleachers there were ideal especially when the racing Chaos ensued as drivers reacted to avoid contact with began... Collyer. Randy Kinsland driving the Crossroads Race 1, started at about 11:30... this group would set Motorsports Corvette tucked in behind Andretti and two track time records. Adam Anderetti, driving the ECC cleared unscathed. Atlanta’s Tim Myers, driving a Dodge Motorsports Chevy Camaro, set a new record for GT2 of Viper, ACRX ended up in the infield grass in his effort to 1:55.184 on his way to a first in class finish. Holly Hill’s avoid collision when he found Collyer sideways in front Ryan Wyatt Financial Advisor Jim White Automotive Art ------------------------- Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC 275 South New York Avenue MAC Z0355-010 Winter Park, FL 32789 Office: 407-622-8150 Toll Free: 877-622-8150 [email protected] 8 www.jwhiteautoart.com 12/2013 7/2013 2/2013 www.twitter.com/JWhite_auto_art [email protected] Phone:727-442-8715 Cell:727-639-0787 Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC Member FINRA/SIPC is a registered broker-dealer and separate non-bank affiliate of Wells Fargo & Company. The pack continued to come... Jeff Hinkle sustained front end damage to the Netdepot Dodge Charger he was driving trying to maneuver to the outside part of the corner. All this action lap one of race one! Jack Ragaglia would bring the pace car out for a lap to get everyone set for another run at the course and to clean up the debris in the corner. Riddell, Vento, Andretti, Kinsland and Kennedy would lead the pack and cleared the horseshoe cleanly. Vento would only complete four circuits Saturday... Riddell placed first in GT1, and Raymond Webb grabbed the second spot in the Kenco Signs Corvette; Orlando’s Fran Hindman took third in the Auto Salon Corvette. Andretti, Kinsland and Bobby Kennedy would finish 12-3 in GT2 on Saturday. Andrew Raines, driving the Raines Racing Ford Taurus would take first in GTA followed by Naples, FL based Vern Smith in his White Rose Engineering Chevy Monte Carlo and Dean Bramer in his Monte Carlo. Other podium spots were grabbed by CFR’s Jack Dunn driving a Shelby Can AM with a first in ASR, Doug Lawhorn from Jacksonville, driving the Troysport Porsche 911 with a first in GT3 and Apopka’s Andrew Wilkin driving to a second in AS in the Wilkin Performance Ford Mustang. The second group Saturday began after lunch... another track record set; by Timothy “Timmy Rivers” Jenurm driving the J.C. France sponsored Mazda RX7 on his way to a first in class finish for ITS, finishing Timothy Jenurm and Paul Schwemmer second overall by less than a half on grid Sunday morning. second to Jeffrey Cripe, who paced all of Saturday’s 53 cars in group two with a first in ITR class in the TFC Motorsports BMW E36. CFR’s Mike Class winners in Group 1 included SPO Driver Lee Guenther, driving a BMW 328IS, would take second in Arnold who completed his best weekend at Daytona ITR followed by Rusty Varnadoe also in a BMW 328IS. ever running his best laps in his V8Stockcar.com Orlando’s Menas Akarjalian placed second in ITS in the Chevrolet Impala and taking wins in the class both days. Buddy Halvey Mazda RX7 and third was taken by Harry Hinkle came home second in SPO, with Cape Charles Perry in his Datsun 280ZX. Coral’s Eric Servick third and AJ Henriksen fourth. Group 1 Race 1 Saturday morning saw Bill Riddell leading the pack in his ‘63 Ford Falcon coming into turn 2. He would go on to win the group. Turn 3, a/k/a the International Horseshoe, saw plenty of action. Bryan Collyer, in the Crunch Construction Monte Carlo, gets loose in Saturday’s 1st Race with or without a little help from his friends. He and Tim Myers are about to meet... The aftermath of Collyer’s spin... Group 1 racers sustained some damage on Saturday. Jeff Hinkle’s Netdepot Dodge picked up some front end modifications... Tim Myers found Collyer sideways in front of him in turn 3, so he had no choice but to spend some time off track. 10 Nope, not RallyCross. Sanford’s Collins Barber surveyed the grass outside of turn 3 on a hot Saturday morning. The grass would indicate he was not the only one... DAYTONA!!! 11 Robert Langlotz drove his Kings Performance Acura Integra to first in ITA followed by Winter Haven’s Pete Burris-Meyer driving an ISC Racing Services Mazda Miata. Group three followed suit with three track records of their own. Jacek Mucha drove the Phoenix-Innotech Swift JMS to a FS record of 1:53.421 on his way to the first in class finish. Heat problems make you feel miserable and can go into serious heatrelated problems. We always heard drink water (or diluted Gatorade) until your urine runs clear. That's fine, unless you happen to be female and double jointed. Dehydration can make you feel sick or nauseous… and less responsive to what's going on around you - not good. Lots 'o water…sit when you can… and seek shade if possible. None of us like to admit we're having problems, but if you see a co-worker having symptoms, call medical to check. And don't think because the day might be cooler and less sunny, it doesn't mean you can't get dehydrated. The worst problems I'd ever seen were on a cloudy day … the Medics said they were running a IV clinic! Note, an excess of beer and 'adult beverages' at the Saturday night social, can result in dehydration too. And, of course, use lots of sunscreen… apply it before you dress and often after that. Check your bottle or tube - if it has an expiration date on it and it's passed its prime, spring for a new bottle to avoid not only being greasy but sunburned too. The latest sunscreen information suggests sunscreen with broad spectrum UVA/UVB of 30 which will block 97%… higher than that, and often more expensive, only increases the percentage to 98%. Hats should be worn, and remember your ears, lest you end up with peeling, ruffled ears… sunglasses with OVA/UVB protection will help prevent future eye problems. Do it for the team, we need every worker to be healthy, awake and alert. MYTH DEBUNKED: Lightning… most of the things we learned don't apply any more. Used to be you count the seconds between seeing the flash and hearing the thunder to judge how far away the storm and danger would be. Now they recommend you seek shelter in buildings or cars with the first occurrence. Be concerned early and avoid the rush. Another myth… we all know you don't stand under a tree during a thunderstorm… but they used to say if no shelter was available, to lie down as flat as you can, and hug the ground… so you're not the tallest thing around. Another falsehood. In addition to lightning strikes there is something called ground lightning. If lightning strikes a tree or other object, it goes through the target and into the ground… and if you're on the ground, you're vulnerable. It’s also recommended that you wait 30 minutes after the last thunder and lightning before you go out again. track, and if the storm is a certain number of miles out, the Stewards are quick to shut down racing activities until it's safe to resume. Job #1 is always safety. JUST SAY NO: If you have to go trackside, be sure to let the Captain know… and have someone watch your back… of course, if at all possible, keep the car between you and the track. Your spotter and you have also got to keep the driver safe if he or she has to get out of the car and over the wall. If you are asked to do something that you feel is unsafe, let your Chief know and just say no. Doing something you feel is unsafe is dangerous for all concerned. You're not a coward, you are an efficient Corner worker and will do your tasks better. FROM PAUL GAUZENS, EXECUTIVE STEWARD, SCCA SEDIV: “We're pleased to announce that effective July 1st, David Langston will be joining our DA team and will handle Emergency Services. David will be taking over the District Administrator - Emergency Services role currently held by Smokey Harper. Smokey is relocating to the NorPac Division in late July. I'd like to thank Smokey for the many years of leadership he has provided the Southeast Division in Emergency Services and know he will be missed. David has been a volunteer in Emergency Services since joining SCCA in 2004, and he brings over 30 years of Fire Rescue and Emergency Incident Management experience to the table. He has had increasingly responsible positions in his professional life - ranging from firefighter to paramedic and leadership in the Fire Rescue arena. Also, David is the current Central Florida Region Chief of ES.” Congratulations to Dave, and Many thanks and continued success to Smokey. DETAILS: Race to the Beach. Robin Ragaglia presiding. Our attendance was back up. A big THANK YOU! goes to Darren Gunn for emailing the meeting notices! We also welcomed two new attendees - Bob Starr former racer now working F & C and Luis who has several cars and is interested in getting one or all on the track. Gov. Robin reported on CFR events from July and Daytona: July - Sebring was well attended with 39 entries for the Drivers' School; 58 for the PDX and 39 for the Enduro. It was hot but no rain issues for either Saturday or Sunday. August - Daytona Double SARRC had 109 cars for the Friday test day and 244 race entries. Saturday's races were completed on time as were the first two races on Sunday. Unfortunately, the weather gods sent some heavy thunderstorms our way and the remaining races were cancelled. Visitors from SCCA's National Office were on hand to observe and continue their planning process for the 2015 National Runoffs. CFR will have four test days at Daytona (Thursday - Sunday) prior to the start of the 2015 Runoffs. 2015 Schedule - is posted on the CFR web site. Our January Majors will be the 3rd weekend - January 16-18, 2015. Florida Region will host the first Majors of 2015 at Homestead. Per Robin Langlotz, Area III Director, the 2015 schedule has been decided. In order to maintain a competition license, you must run at least one event per year. To move from Novice to a full competition license, you must run three weekends within two years. The primary purpose is for the novice driver to gain knowledge and familiarization with the various processes (registration, tech., etc.) they encounter at events. Robin's term expires this year and Lee Hill (CFR) and John Zucarelli (Florida) are running for the position. Art Trier reported that Solo is doing very well. Over the last three events, they have had over 100 participants at each event and had 127 cars at the OCCC event. The PDX events are consistently selling out. They are planning two PDX standalone events at Daytona on the Skip Barber course in 2015. The next BOG meeting will be held Saturday, September 6th at the Holiday Inn Express at I4 and US 27. Following the business and general discussion portion we moved to door prizes and the all important bench racing. Mark your Calendar! See you at the track! Fran From the Editor It’s been a while since The Checker has shown up in your mailbox... Many of you reading this have shown concern for this by the emails and phone calls I’ve received over the past few months. My job as the editor over the years has been to organize, format and disseminate the information and submissions that had been offered for publication into this news magazine; for more than 21 years we’ve printed and mailed it out to you, the readers. Over the years there have been many who have submitted photography, articles, columns and other offerings. We very much appreciate and value the dedication of those who have shared. For some reason, since the last issue in March, everything just sort of dried up, except for submissions from a few longtime, dedicated contributors like Sally Larson with her Flag Ravings column and Fran Martin and Dave Fredrick who’ve been providing regular District news reports. It is hard to publish a magazine without more content. There are certainly a ton of things happening within the club on both a local and national level. I would love to be able to share all those things with you, the reader, if only I knew what 16 those things were. In our effort to do so, we’ll be personally reporting from all the local Club Racing events going forward, sharing our insight and observations of those events with plans to include features on drivers and club workers. We’re very committed to providing you a quality, informative and hopefully entertaining publication and are always open for more insight and contributions that we can share with the 2,500 or so members of the Central Florida Region of the SCCA. Feel free to offer up anything - you don’t have to be an accomplished author to write an article... we’ll edit it if necessary. What you have to offer may be of value by your fellow automotive enthusiasts. Maybe you’ve got an idea for an article or a press release to let others know what’s been happening in your racing world. We’d love to know! We look forward to seeing you at Sebring at the end of the month. Kevin Crain Editor August 2014 Lee Hill for SEDiv Director Our current representative on the SCCA Board of Directors (Robin Langlotz) has served for six years and will be stepping down later this year – so it's almost time to choose his replacement (ballots will be mailed to Area 3 members this fall). The Area 3 Director represents 5 SCCA regions (Florida, Central Florida, Dixie, Gulf Coast, and Wiregrass) on the SCCA National Board of Directors. Top Five Reasons To Vote For Lee Hill As Area 3 Director: 1) Active regular competitor in Sports Renault/Spec Racer Ford for 20 years. I understand competition and I understand what is important to competitors. 2) Wide range of SCCA experience. I'm a club racing driver and I work F&C at a half dozen events each year. I'm the Assistant RE for Central Florida Region responsible for Business Planning and Budget. I'm also Webmaster for Central Florida Region and Chairman of the SouthEast Division Budget Committee. I'm the coauthor of the Tropical Endurance Series Rules and the co-author of the Southeast Championship Series (the 2014 and beyond “Alternate Path to the RunOffs”). 3) I have an in-depth understanding of what it takes to run a successful SCCA Region with very active Club Racing, PDX, Solo, and RallyeCross programs. Even though my competitive background is in Club Racing, I understand our Solo, PDX, and RallyeCross programs and have been a strong supporter of them. 4) I'm a numbers guy – analytical and thorough – and I learn fast. I ask lots of questions and read widely. My business background combined with my SCCA experience make me an ideal candidate for the SCCA Board of Directors. 5) I have no conflicts of interest with service on the SCCA Board. My only financial involvement in racing is ownership of my SRF and related gear. Racing and SCCA have been an important part of life for me and my family (my wife regularly works F&C and Grid) and my only interest in serving on the board is to strengthen our sport and our club. Please take the time to vote this fall – your representative on the SCCA National Board is an important choice that will affect the future of our club. Thanks! Lee Hill SCCA #220095 Yellow/Black SRF #72 To the Editor As a long-time member of the SCCA, I've developed a fond appreciation for the benefits of "club racing" and its important role in racing. I've seen some concern for this "symptom of the problem" from different levels of the SCCA recently, but no unified push. More professionals have honed their skills in SCCA in this country than any other program. But, more importantly, the SCCA has provided a format for thousands of people just like me who will not become professional, but still lived their dream by racing. Lee Hill, a candidate for the Board of Area 3, has put a lot of thought into this subject and others. As an active driver and worker, he has many fresh and original ideas. His business background is evident in his approach to problems. And, he WANTS to serve on the Board. Please give him a chance this fall. But, fellow racers, look around the room at your next district meeting and count the young people. That's the future of the sport we love. The trouble is, there sure aren't very many of them. And, their numbers have been decreasing across the nation.
