For David Sevigny, the World Championship is, thus far, the crowning jewel in a brief career that has rocked the world of competition shooting. The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2002 © GLOCK, 2002 page Seven Member’s Corner I Changed My Mind Volume II, 2002 Pistol Giveaway Winner I O n June 1, 2002 my family and I traveled to Fulton, NY for the GSSF Empire State Regional Classic IX. This was our first shooting match and we were unsure about what to expect. We were delightfully surprised with our experience. All of the people we encountered were friendly and knowledgeable. Pictured is our daughter, 6 months old, at her first GLOCK match. The first of many, we are hoping! am a former Navy Seal. Through my experience in the Navy and when abroad for my studies in the States, I had the chance to use several kinds of handguns. I used to be a great fan of Smith & Wesson and I supported my choice very firmly. However, when I handled my first GLOCK I changed my opinion completely. Now at 34 years of age, I have won a G17, a G19, and a G30. I want you to know that GLOCK is the best choice I have ever made. I will never regret it! “Better late than never!” They are my babies. Believe it or not, I spend more time with them than with my girlfriend. P. P. Cyprus New GLOCK Recruit purchased my very first GLOCK about five months ago and am proud to have become a GSSF member. I am a US Marine in North Carolina, and my commanding officer believes in teaching his Marines to be proficient with a pistol. And, of all the Marines he has introduced to IPSC and the art of pistol shooting, I am proud that so far I am the only Marine to never experience a jam or malfunction. My G23 is a fine weapon, and after reading your article in The GLOCK Report, “The GLOCK That Rose Again,” it is reassuring that the G23 will be there for me in any conditions and environments I am in. Thank you for making such a fine weapon—I cannot wait for my first GSSF match. I Prior to purchasing our GLOCKs we did extensive research on the various handguns available. We not only wanted a dependable handgun, we wanted a safe one as well. In addition to purchasing our GLOCKs, we also purchased a safe in which to store them as we have 4 children in the house. It was our goal to take great care in teaching our children about gun safety. We both work together in teaching them the proper ways in which to handle firearms. It is our firm belief that it is a parent’s responsibility to educate their children as well as keep their weapons locked away out of harm’s way. In the back of our minds is always the threat that we might someday lose our right to bear arms. We hope to never see that day so that we may continue to enjoy our GLOCKs for many generations. Our choice of firearm is GLOCK because it is not only the most reliable gun on the market, but it is the safest! K. and G. R. New York State page Eight E. I. North Carolina © GLOCK, 2002 The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2002 Starting Early hooting the GSSF matches has surely become a family affair. My husband began shooting them in 1996; I started when we began dating in 1999 and we compete twice a year as a married couple at the Dallas and San Antonio matches here in Texas. But recently we’ve been bringing a new Junior Shooter with us to pass on our commitment to the shooting sports. Thus far, she’s attended 3 GSSF matches. This may not seem too remarkable or that unusual, since we certainly see many couples and families enjoying the matches. But what is unique about our circumstances is that our new Junior Shooter is only 7 months old! She began attending the matches while I was still pregnant with her (though I didn’t shoot that tournament, upon doctor’s recommendation only), and she’s been going with us ever since. Her second match was the wet and cold San Antonio December 2001 match and her most recent was the 2002 Dallas match. We plan to take her to the inaugural Schreveport match this year. We’re certainly excited to introduce her to the shooting sports, and look forward to her winning the Junior Female category once she’s old enough to understand and master all of the safety elements. Good shooting! S model for the model that I really wanted with very little trouble. I’m now the proud owner of a G21 in .45 caliber. I love it and shoot it at every opportunity. This past weekend in Spokane, Washington the CanAm Police/Fire Games were held. Since I am a Canadian Customs officer, I entered the competition and had a terrific weekend of shooting and talking to other officers who are armed by GLOCK. In six events, I won one bronze, two silver and two gold medals. Yes! I was a happy shooter—two of those events—Duty Pistol and Distinguished Semi-Auto earned one silver and one gold respectively. That G21 is one heck of a fine gun. Since I’ve owned it, I’ve not had one misfire, failure to feed or eject. It eats everything that I feed it and puts them right where I point it. As a matter of fact, I have a sneaky feeling that my G21 is a whole lot more accurate than I am. Your product is a great one. It feels good in my hand; points naturally; chambers and fires everything I put into it and is accurate as all get-out. Thanks, GLOCK folks—a silver and a gold medal are now hanging on my wall because of your fine product. G. D. Surrey, Canada, BC D., S. and C. V. Texas A True Champion A New Family ou are the highlight of my shooting life. A couple of years ago I won a GLOCK at a PPC match on Vancouver Island, after shooting the Duty Pistol event with a borrowed G22 that a kind member of the RCMP loaned to me—the first time I had fired one of your fine pistols. You could say that I was impressed. I talked with your wonderful and accommodating Customer Service Department who allowed me to exchange the prize I Y The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2002 never realized that when I joined GSSF that I would be joining a family. There are things to do all year long. There are a lot of new and exciting places to go and new friends to meet, and the best part is—I’m invited! Thank you, GSSF. J. A. Michigan © GLOCK, 2002 page Nine Member’s Corner This Says It All hey say a picture is worth a thousand words, so instead of telling you my opinion of GLOCKs, I’ll show you a picture of what became of my two Sigs, Browning HiPower, Kahr, and Mauser M2. T I don’t understand why every army in the world isn’t equipped with GLOCKs. They may not be pretty—neither is the Jeep or Humvee—but, they take a licking and keep on ticking, as that old commercial said. I’ve never won anything, but please enter me in your next drawing for another GLOCK pistol. on a reduced B-27 target. I would also like to note that one of our biggest opponents, the State Police, and the MDNR, who employ great shooters, did not place in the top three with their new Sig Arms .40. I would also like you to know that my fellow officer who had a score of 274 had the second highest overall score. Also, it bears mention that we all backed up our team competition with good scores in the Open class. Although these scores were not with GLOCK pistols (because you could use any gun), there is no reason to believe that the same scores could not be achieved with the GLOCK. In the Open I took honors with a 284-9X. One of my fellow officers backed me up in second place with a 283-5X, and the other finished in 5th place overall with a 279. All in all, it was a good day, and it was very rewarding to place so well against the best law enforcement shooters across the Upper Peninsula. I wanted you to know how admirably the GLOCK performed. I also wanted you to know that we have so much confidence in the GLOCK guns that we also carry them personally for protection, not just for work. H. B. Alabama Winning with GLOCK nclosed please find a photo of my teammates and me after the annual Michigan Upper Peninsula Law Enforcement Shoot. It was held on Thursday, June 20, 2002. This shoot is the championship for law enforcement officers in the U.P. every year, and attracts officers from across the U.P. ranging from small police departments to large ones such as the Michigan State Police, Department of Natural Resources, and our Michigan Department of Corrections. Our team— MDOC-Alger Maximum Security Correctional Facility, took the team honors this year. We converted from the S&W Model 15 .38 Special to the G22 .40 early last year. This particular competition requires that you use your duty weapon. We were able to take this competition with our “out of the box” 8lb trigger G22s. We also posted respectable scores to do so. The team consisted of two of my fellow officers (scores were 262 and 274), and me (251). Our team total was 787, and we beat our nearest competitor by 19 points. All shooting is done at 20 yards E page Ten We are now beginning to prepare for the State Championships, commonly referred to as the “Governor’s Cup.” This is for all law enforcement personnel statewide. It is a different format—bullseye all at 25 yards. There is a strong marketing atmosphere at the competition as Smith and Wesson awards several guns to winners, and there are many dealers there selling guns and accessories. Shooting the G22 is not really feasible at this championship competition because there are no “duty” requirements, so most shooters use either their 1911s or Model 52 Smith for bullseye. As I said previously, we all personally own GLOCKs. Together we own two G22s, two G23s, and one G27. We have the utmost confidence in the guns. P. M. Michigan © GLOCK, 2002 The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2002 In the GLOCK Annuals I have read about GSSF, and I wondered if I could join GSSF here in the Netherlands too? So I started writing. Great was my surprise when you sent me the membership card, the GLOCK Report and the GSSF hat. The boys and girls of our gun club will be jealous now. I look forward to the next GLOCK Report and I proudly promote my GLOCKs here in the Netherlands! Lots of Greetings, from a happy Dutch GLOCKer. W. V. The Netherlands Something Borrowed, Something Blue, Something GLOCK??? y husband and I are avid GLOCK shooters. We always go to our local GLOCK shoot and we have even travelled to Florida for one. When I first met my husband I already knew GLOCK was the gun for me. My husband didn’t care for them at first. After my first GLOCK purchase he tried it and loved it. He bought one after another and couldn’t get enough of them. When it came time for our wedding, I bought him the 10th Anniversary Commemorative pistol. He was thrilled that I bought him a wedding gift like that. Since we love our GLOCKs so much, I thought it would be fitting to surprise my husband and our guests with a G27 hidden in my garter. What a surprise it was! M Like GLOCKwork ost of my military career I carried the 1911 45 caliber as my sidearm. The 45 has and always will be my favorite handgun. My first impression of the GLOCK was that it looked like a toy gun. Still not trusting a gun without a side safety or hammer, I bought many handguns and fired many different ones. One day a friend and I went to a range to shoot with his G22 and my Sig. After the first volley we traded guns just to see the difference in shooting. To my amazement his was much lighter and fit my hand quite well. Like a Swiss watch, the GLOCK is a well-made, easy to handle, easy to clean handgun. I recently purchased a G21 which I am well pleased with, so much so that I would recommend a GLOCK to anyone for an all-purpose handgun. M S. & B. H. New Hampshire H. F. Alabama Greetings from the Netherlands n the Netherlands, it is not as easy to get a firearm permit as in the USA. So if you get a permit you want to have a gun that is one of the best that is available. After some testing I found GLOCK is very good for me. The more I shoot the gun, the more I like it. Now I have won a G17 and a G21. I The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2002 © GLOCK, 2002 page Eleven Member’s Corner GLOCK— An Eye-Opener n the mid-1980s I was the senior firearms instructor for the Louisville Division of Police. I was introduced to the GLOCK pistol for law enforcement by Mr. Gary Wade of GLOCK. I told him that I did not feel the GLOCK was suitable for law enforcement because it had no external safety. Gary stated “This is a pure combat handgun.” Boy, was he right. I started shooting GLOCKs even before my agency started using them. I am a GSSF member and I enjoy the GLOCK matches along with shooting IPSC. As you can tell by the picture of my personal GLOCK cabinet I am sold on the GLOCK pistol. “First they fired us, then they hired us.” I I am humbled by the performance of the G19 and recommend it to other shooters on the range. Thanks again, Gaston, for GLOCK perfection and a great little 9mm. T. C. Illinois E. W. Kentucky We Love Our GLOCKs am enclosing a photograph that shows the GLOCKs that I, my boyfriend and his brother have collected over the past three months. I purchased the G19 last winter for personal protection, but sport shooting has turned out to be a very fun hobby for all three of us. We have four GLOCKs among us, including my original G19, a G17, and two G34s. We are constantly trying to decide which model we want next. We go out shooting with our GLOCKs weekly — that has completely replaced the past hobby of trap shooting for the guys. I recently received my GSSF membership packet and am so pleased with all of the information that came with it. I P. H. Minnesota G19— A Great Teacher fter serving in Viet Nam, I promised myself I would never fire a weapon again unless out of necessity. For 33 years I kept my promise until 9/11/01. At that point, I made a visit to my local gun shop and bought a new G19. I was now visiting my local range a few times a week, with a pistol that in time would teach me how to shoot. With over 20,000 rounds of flawless effort, I can now fire 50 rounds at 13 yards and get a nice group. A page Twelve © GLOCK, 2002 The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2002 (Continued from page 1) “I thought if I was going to carry a gun, I ought to be going to the range and making sure I knew how to use it,” he said. “I remember when I used to go to the range and take a single bag,” he said ruefully. “Now I have to take a truckload.” World Shoot XIII was held outside Johannesburg in the town of Pietersburg. The match consisted of 35 stages of fire, spread over more than a week of shooting. The stages included everything from arm’s length and fast to long shots requiring precision accuracy. There was also a 100-yard field course, essentially a hundred-yard dash with lots of targets. “You don’t see that in the U.S.,” Sevigny said. “Thankfully.” “We started early and shot late,” Sevigny told me. “This was by far the hardest match I’ve ever shot.” That sentiment was echoed by Sharon Zaffiro, who, in essence, “found her mojo” on the plains of Africa. Sharon Zaffiro dominated the women’s side of the practical shooting sports throughout the 1990s. Whether it was USPSA Open or Limited (World and years of pushing a 1911 Colt racegun, Sharon found herself with one of Mr. GLOCK’s plastic marvels. And she began to get the urge to start competing again. Unfortunately, her job as Range Program Administrator for GLOCK, Inc. involves a lot of travel, which is never good for establishing that so-necessary practice routine. “You don’t want to know how much I ‘practiced’ this year,” she said. “If you want to call it practice.” With only three matches under her belt prior to the World Shoot, she resolved herself to making a serious effort in Africa. “I believe it’s like riding a bicycle,” she said. “You never forget how to do it, you just have to work on finesse.” Shooting a stock GLOCK 17 9x19 from a Safariland competition holster, she smoked through the 35 stages. “The stages were great,” she said. “I really got into them, and I really enjoyed the shooting.” The third G17 was in the hands of yet another veteran, Debbie Keehart-Ross, who had not been having a great year. Keehart went to Africa too with the specific goal of ending her season on a positive note. She did that in spades, capturing the Production Gun title for women. Production guns are held to an even higher standard of “stock” than Standard, and once again, the G17 in the hands of a master performed. “We absolutely want to congratulate our three World Champions,” said Chris Edwards, founder of the GLOCK Shooting Sports Foundation and the company’s competition coordinator. “At this match, you saw every gun you’re likely to encounter…Berettas, CZs, Tangfolios, H&Ks…from around the world, and we came out on top in really hard fought races.” Of course, Edwards added, GLOCK never had any doubts about the G17. “It’s an oldie,” he said, “but a goodie.” Meet the GSSF Staff Debbie Keehart-Ross, Women’s World Champion, Production Gun Division National championships), the multiplicity of The Masters, the accuracy challenges of the Bianchi Cup or such diverse matches like the Sportsmen Team Challenge or the Three-Gun Championships, Zaffiro was at the top. Then a whole series of events conspired to take her out of the winners circle and out of sight. One major event was the deflation of Colt Firearms, her longtime sponsor. With Colt no longer in the running, Zaffiro found herself in the same position as a NASCAR driver who’d lost “the ride.” A couple of years ago, Zaffiro made a career change and began working for GLOCK.
