Greetings!
The 2nd Women’s Premier Soccer League National Championship Tournament will be held
July 31st – August 1st in Folsom, California. The tournament, set up in a knockout style
bracket, brings together each of the three division champions (North, South, East) along with a
wildcard team from the North or South.
Because of the league’s competitiveness, the division champions may be unknown until the
final week of the season. The Eastern Division is a race between two teams, defending
champions New England Mutiny and the rookie Steel City Sparks. The Western Division race
is between last year’s WPSL National Champions Utah Spiders and last year’s runner-ups
California Storm.
Those two divisions may be close, but not as close as the Southern Division where three to four
teams may be crowned champions. At least one thing is for sure, the WPSL National
Championship Tournament will not disappoint.
“…it has grown into the only stand-alone national
women’s soccer league in the country.”
The United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) sanctioned the WPSL seven years ago
as a Regional league. USASA is an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the
ruling body of soccer in the United States and FIFA the world's ruling body for soccer. Two
years ago, the WPSL was given National status and has been busy expanding ever since.
“When all was said and done, the WPSL succeeded in its
endeavors as it has done throughout its existence.”
The WPSL began with only four Californian teams, and because of the high level of play and
the ideology of the league, it has grown into the only stand-alone national women’s soccer
league in the country. The league’s mission is to provide a playing opportunity for elite
women soccer players, to promote and develop independent women’s soccer at the highest
level and to bring quality soccer to the community and youth programs, while promoting the
stature of female athletes as role models.
Before the season, the WPSL buzzed with activity: finding and signing new teams, readjusting
schedules and expanding its staff. When all was said and done, the WPSL succeeded in its
endeavors as it has done throughout its existence. They added seven more teams from across
the United States: Las Vegas Tabagators, Central California Gold, Massachusetts Stingers,
Steel City Sparks, SWC Houston Stars, Rochester Reign, Northern California Blues, as well as
three provisional teams: Denver Kickers, Grand Rapids Alliance and F.C Indiana.
“The existence of new teams each year goes to show that we continue to have growth,” says
League Commissioner Jerry Zanelli. “And next year we will add the provisional teams plus
eight to ten more teams into the league. There will be teams in Oklahoma, Texas,
Albuquerque, New Mexico and Phoenix, Arizona.”
“Two Elk Grove Players Make Country, Team and
League Proud”
The 2004 season has already held numerous triumphs. In the year the Women’s United Soccer
Association suspended operations, the WPSL carried on as usual, even grabbing the attention
of national teams around the world. Two Elk Grove Pride players, Stephanie Lopez (Portland)
and Megan Rapinoe (Portland), helped the U.S. Women’s U-19 National Team qualify for the
World Championships in Thailand, this November. Following the U-19 team’s success, head
coach Mark Krikorian invited Meghan Schnur (UCONN) of the New England Mutiny, to the
U-19 U.S. training camp roster. SWC Houston Stars were also glad to announce that the U-19
Honduran Women’s National Team called upon the very talented Briggeht Garcia.
“…the Las Vegas Tabagators held the Mexican
National Team to a 0-0 draw…”
Furthermore, several players were then called-up to their respective Olympic teams. Tanya
Kalivas (California Storm), Ileana Moschos (California Storm) and Sophia Smith (SWC
Houston Stars) have been training for the Greek team in preparations to the August games in
Athens. The U.S. placed Lorrie Fair (California Storm) and Brandi Chastain (California
Storm) on its Olympic team.
Many current WPSL players also attended the WUSA Soccer Festivals held at the worldrenowned National Sports Center, Blaine, Minn., and the newly built Home Depot Center,
Carson, Calif. In total, 22 players representing nine WPSL teams took the field in front of the
tens-of-thousand screaming fans. Sissi (Brazil WNT, Storm); Keri Sanchez (Mexican WNT,
Storm); and Mary-Frances Monroe (New England Mutiny) are just a few who attended.
However even minus the WUSA players, the WPSL stands alone. The WPSL has players from
16 of this year’s Top 25 women’s NCAA Division I teams, seven of the top ten. Also included
in the bunch are players from the 2003 National Champion Portland Pilots and 2004 runnerups Connecticut Huskies.
Success did not stop at an individual level. The California Storm took on the San Francisco
Nighthawks at Spartan Stadium in a doubleheader with the MLS San Jose Earthquakes and
Canadian National Team. A couple weeks later, the WPSL showed its strength once again
when the Las Vegas Tabagators held the Mexican National Team to a 0-0 draw at the Peter
Johann Memorial Field at UNLV. In the game, keeper Jenna Huff recorded 15 saves and the
Tabagators defensive line kept the Mexican aerial-attack at bay. The Mutiny will also play the
Athens-bound Chinese National Team at Agawam High School on Thursday, July 29th.
The WPSL is a league that remains dedicated to women soccer players and will continue to do
so for years to come. It is also an open league. All league information such as: team bios,
rosters, statistics, schedules, results, constitution and by-laws, forms, instructions, meeting
minutes and latest league news is available on the website www.wpsl.info.
