JUNE 2015

Wear purple to support older people
B
ox Hill Town Hall will be illuminated in purple
from 15-21 June to focus attention on elder
abuse as a public health and human rights issue.
Community members are also encouraged to wear purple,
host a purple morning tea or any other purple-themed event
on or around World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Monday
15 June.
Advocate group Seniors Rights Victoria reports that up to
6 per cent of older people experience elder abuse. Elder
abuse encompasses financial, emotional, physical, social or
sexual abuse of older people, by taking someone’s money or
possessions, failing to provide necessary care, making threats
or stopping an older person from keeping up their social
contacts. The abuse is often perpetrated by someone known
and trusted such as family and friends.
The day aims to raise awareness of this fact and to prompt
people to be vigilant about the welfare of the older people
in their lives, who can be very vulnerable members of the
community.
Council would love to see a photo of your World Elder Abuse
Awareness Week activity. Send your photos to Council’s
Community Development Officer (Healthy Ageing), Kim
Rosenfeld at [email protected]
For more details about the day, visit
www.elderabuseawarenessday.org.au
Ways to get involved
Those experiencing elder abuse can phone Senior Rights
Victoria’s confidential helpline on 1300 368 821 or Eastern
Community Legal Centre on 9762 6235.
• Tell people why you are
wearing purple.

and respect their rights.
Women’s
Forum – Safer
Neighbourhoods
SAVE
THE DATE
T
he first Whitehorse Women’s
Forum for 2015 will discuss how
to create safer neighbourhoods.
Since 2001, Council’s WBW has attracted more than 10,800 attendees to a series
of informative workshops, and breakfast and dinner sessions covering topical
issues for the business community, along with the popular Women in Business
expo and luncheon.
Many of us no longer know our neighbours
and this can create a sense of social
isolation, loneliness and feelings of
being unsafe for many members of the
community, including older people.
Themes for this year’s program include business online, creating a high performance
environment, marketing, economics and investment, the future of business, and
encouraging women in business to lead with courage and resilience. To book or for
more information, phone 9262 6333 or visit www.wbiz.com.au

Occasional Care at Aqualink
Matsudo
Sister City
relationship
thrives
A
qualink Nunawading and Aqualink Box Hill
now offer registered occasional care programs
for both members and non-members.
In addition to Aqualink crèche services, parents can now make use
of the occasional care program and leave the centre for up to four
hours to enjoy some ‘me time’ or tick off all the other things they
need to do.
W
hitehorse marked its
ongoing relationship
with sister city Matsudo,
holding a series of events
in March, April and May to
celebrate the special bond
between the two cities.
Qualified staff will care for your children in a secure environment
with fun, interactive indoor and outdoor play areas.
Shannon Beck and Belinda Wood, regular users of the crèche at
Aqualink Nunawading, were thrilled with the introduction
of occasional care.
For the first time, Council’s
Whitehorse-Matsudo Sister City
Friendship Group held a stall at
Council’s national Harmony Day
event, Global Fiesta, on 15 March
promoting the Japanese city, which
was very successful. Community
of all ages enjoyed Kendama (a
Japanese rope and ball game),
origami and Japanese-themed
colouring pages for youngsters.
“I have been a member for over seven years and having access to
the crèche means I can do my work out and know my son Bailey
is not only safe, but also happy. The kids do fun and stimulating
activities and I’d recommend it to anyone with young children,”
said Shannon.
Belinda agreed that the addition of occasional care would be a huge
benefit to busy parents in the area.
“The ability to leave Jasper at Aqualink for a longer period of time
means I’ll be able to get a few extra things done before pick-up
time,” said Belinda.
Members can book one week ahead and non-members can ring after
6pm the night before. Session times for occasional care are the same
as those for crèche.

Library Events
The libraries' school holiday

In mid-March, a delegation of
10 students and two staff from
the City of Matsudo visited
Whitehorse, attending Koonung
Secondary College in Mont Albert
North as part of a long-standing
exchange program. The group is
selected from students who have
excelled in speaking English and
have been given the opportunity
to visit Whitehorse and Sydney.
Selection is made by the City of
Matsudo and open to all students
living in Matsudo.
There was also a great turnout
during Matsudo Week, where
residents immersed themselves in
Japanese culture by taking part in a
series of events and workshops.
Activities included Shodo (Japanese
calligraphy), Japanese ink art,
Shibori silk dyeing, and Japanese
cooking, including gyoza and
sweet treats, which were held
at the Box Hill Community Arts
Centre (BHCAC).
In Japan the tradition of bamboo
wishing trees appears at festivals
and shrines. Following this
tradition, visitors to BHCAC were
invited to write or draw a wish on
a piece of paper and tie it around
a branch of the Matsudo Week
Wishing Tree.
Meanwhile, art enthusiasts
enjoyed an exhibition of 1960s
reproductions of Japanese
woodblock prints from masters
such as Hokusai, Utamaro and
Harunobu, recently gifted to the
Whitehorse Art Collection. There
was also a concert presented by
the Boite featuring Izumi Fujikawa
performing the harp-like koto
and Anne Norman playing the
shakuhachi, a bamboo flute.

The Winter Solstice has the least daylight hours of any day in the year and is observed by many for
its historical and cultural significance.

crafts and soup by an open fire. There will also be entertainment and an art display from local
students. This is one event not to be missed!

Free Environmental Education
Yarran Dheran offers a picturesque setting to learn about
sustainability and the environment.
Council provides free programs for children and community
groups of all kinds, including schools, scouts and walking
groups, covering topics such as habitat, ecosystems, food webs,
the urban water cycle, local history and household sustainability.
The service is coordinated by Council’s Education Program Officer, Lucy Menzies,
who is a registered teacher, with the assistance of an experienced team of volunteers.
A series of sessions are held at Blackburn Lake Sanctuary.
Yarran Dheran, a former industrial site, is a mixture of original indigenous bushland and reconstructed
bushland covering 7.2 hectares. Mullum Mullum Creek runs through the reserve providing an
important wildlife corridor. More than 85 species of birds have been identified in the reserve, along
with the occasional koala after they were released into the area in the 1970s.
For more information on the free education programs, phone Lucy Menzies on 9262 6211 or email

Hit the Driving
Range over Winter
J
ust because winter is here doesn’t
mean you have to pack away
your golf clubs. Morack’s 18 bay driving range is undercover and under lights so you
can work on your game all year round. Even if your busy schedule stops you from getting out on the range during
the day, Morack is open seven days a week, until 8pm during the week
and until 7pm on weekends and public holidays, so you can hit a bucket of
balls before or after work, in your lunch break or even after dinner! The dedicated teaching bays offer the perfect opportunity to receive expert
coaching from a team of PGA Professionals headed by Brian Fitzgerald
and Ben Bunny. Both have many years’ experience coaching beginner
and experienced golfers and the winter months are a great time to work
on your game in preparation for your next round of nine or 18 holes. Particularly popular are the packages of five private 30-minute lessons
where you can work one-on-one with a PGA professional on all aspects
of your game. Or, for the novice golfer, beginner golf clinics offer the

Winner: Maxa Design House, Nunawading
The existing dwelling was reimagined
with an efficient free flowing open-plan
home with connectivity between indoor
and outdoor spaces. The imaginative
detailing gives a nod to the vernacular of
the original house while also providing a
strong character for the new.
The project is packed with environmentally
sustainable initiatives including
insulation, waste minimisation, efficient
renewable energy and rainwater
harvesting and conservation.

The bold architecture and functionality of
the building contributes positively to the built
environment and has become a focus of the
Mega Mile precinct. The design transformed
a simple building with strong forms, richly
textured materials and interesting detailing
to give a distinct character. The folded,
soaring roof structure is readily visible and
the market pod eateries created an active
and engaging frontage.

An example of bespoke architecture,
this project focussed on creating an
environment which enhanced the way the
occupants lived, most significantly inverting
the usual configuration of building and
open space by creating a small building
footprint and a large garden. The design
has many sustainability initiatives which
have resulted in low running costs and
maintenance requirements.

The clever and innovative design
approach to this facility has created
something way beyond the norm.
The confined footprint and functional
complexity of the building led to a
unique design solution in the form of
self-contained curriculum packages
that can be stacked, deployed and
reshuffled as required, much like
shipping containers. Not only does
this building set new standards in
collaborative learning environments but
it exposes its inner working to busy Elgar
Road, making an active and engaging
contribution to the streetscape.
Institutional Project
Winner: RSPCA

The complex and clever design takes into
account all aspects of animal care and
provides engaging spaces for animals
and humans alike, encouraging positive
interaction between the two.
Commendation: 2-4 Queen Street, Blackburn
Commendation: Mitcham Private Hospital
Project by: Hayball
Project by: Team2Architects and Modscape
The modulation of the built form creates
an engaging presence in the evolving
context of Queen Street. The building is well
integrated, with the building mass being
broken down and staggered and through
the use of a refined palette of materials.
The addition of a 21-bed Mental Health
Unit to the Mitcham Private Hospital
was an exercise in sensitive, creative and
clever design solutions. The scale, form
and textual materials avoid giving the
buildings an institutional appearance.

attended the Blackburn RSL service and this

Graham Bend Park
Council’s newest park, Graham Bend – located
at 46 Graham Place, Box Hill – was a house
block bought by Council specifically for the
purpose of turning it into parkland. It was
officially opened by the Mayor on Monday 4
May 2015. This block is the first of this type
of development for Council, which was a
recommendation of the Open Space Strategy
(2011). The new park features a playground,

The Amendment C158, a new car parking overlay
for the Box Hill Activity Centre, would reduce the
amount of car parking required in new residential
and commercial developments. All submissions
received were sent to an independent Panel
for its consideration. The Panel’s final report, in
summary, recommends that: 0.2 visitor spaces to
each dwelling for the first five dwellings, plus 0.1
spaces for subsequent dwellings, up to an overall
maximum of five spaces.

Sports Without Borders
I attended a conference in May focussing
on discrimination in sport. The founder of
Sports Without Borders is James Demetriou
(brother of former AFL boss, Andrew) and this
organisation strongly promotes inclusiveness
in sport. Lessons still need to be learnt as
exemplified by cases such as the Adam Goodes
incident and more recently involving Bashar
Houli. At a local level, I know our sporting
clubs are determined to stamp out any form
of discrimination and it was good that Council
officers also attended this conference. One
stand out club in this regard is Nunawading
Swimming Club and I had the absolute
pleasure to present Jeremy Tidy with the Anne
Currie Swimmer With a Disability Award at the
recent awards night. Well done Jeremy!

Local celebrations
The last few weeks have seen celebrations
for two Riversdale Ward icons:
Kingswood College celebrated 125 years by
holding a photographic exhibition at Box Hill
Community Arts Centre in Station Street,
just down the road from the school. This
captured milestones in the school's history
and dated back to the days when it was a
"boys only" school.
During the past 125 years many things have
changed – the location, name and uniform,
but the commitment to the students is still
as strong as ever.
Councillor Davenport and I were delighted to
attend the Presentation Day at Bennetswood
Bowls Club to celebrate the members'
achievements.
This wonderful club continues to provide
leisure, social and health benefits to its many
members of all ages. It is always great to visit
this vibrant club and see the camaraderie
which exists between the members, many
who joined decades ago.
Anzac Day
I was privileged to attend a number of Anzac
memorial services. Particularly rewarding was
the school children's service which attracted
hundreds of children from schools in the local
area. The number of schools and children has
grown enormously over the last few and it
is great to see that the history of Anzac has
passed on to the next generation.

New grounds a game changer
P
layers and their families are getting a kick out of the new soccer
pitch at Wembley Park, Box Hill, following a $1.1 million
Council-funded redevelopment to resolve drainage problems.
Whitehorse Councillor Sharon Ellis said Box Hill United
Soccer Club held its first match on the new ground on
Friday 15 May 2015, enjoying the results of the high
end reconstruction project that is typically seen at major
stadiums, such as AAMI Park.
“Council places great importance on encouraging sport
and recreation in the municipality. These works were
conducted because Wembley Park had drainage problems
and out-dated underground infrastructure that limited the
club’s use of the ground,” Cr Ellis said.
Cr Ellis said the project involved a 45cm deep excavation of the
soccer field, after which it was stabilised using lime and cement.
Permeable fabric (geofabric), drainage and irrigation pipes were
installed, along with a gravel layer followed by a sand layer
before the finishing touch – premium Santa Ana turf.
Sustainability features of the project include a special
irrigation system that automatically switches off if it is
leaking to ensure no water is wasted.
Cr Ellis said the
reconstruction
was part of
Council’s
sports field
ground renewal
program.
“Council is
committed to providing
facilities and services that
support healthy lifestyles. We are fortunate to have over 330
local parks, 170 playgrounds, more than 50 sports fields and
other facilities such as two skate parks, leisure centres and
Morack Public Golf Course for the community to enjoy.”

David returns home for 80th birthday bash
A
former occupant of the historic Mountain View Cottage is returning to his
childhood home for a double 80th birthday bash for himself and his wife.
David Wright moved to the cottage with his
parents and two brothers, Geoff and Arthur,
in 1941 when he was just five years old.
He spent the next 20 years living at
Mountain View Cottage which is now
home to Council’s transport and active
living programs.
Things certainly looked very different when
David lived in the area.
“There were orchards all through the area,
except opposite us which was bush land.
There were no local roads, it was all gravel.
If we heard a car we’d rush out to see who
it was because usually we would know
them,” David said.
Mountain View Cottage was built in the
early 1900s and David’s parents, Tom and
Catherine Jessie Wright, were among its
early owners.
The Wright family had a large hand in
developing the area around Mountain
View Cottage.
“Mum and Dad built the shop at the front
– the milk bar on Springfield Road – which
they ran for some years before Ros (David’s
wife) and I took over. Eventually Mum and
Dad built all the shops along that part of
Springfield Road,” David said.
David enjoyed life in the bushy suburb of
Nunawading. He was a busy businessman
through the week and spent his downtime
engaging in his passion for amateur radio
and attending the community dances at
Box Hill Town Hall, where he met his now
wife Ros (Rosalind) during the 1950s.
“The Box Hill Town Hall dance was a
very big event in those days. It was very
well run – no alcohol and
live bands would
play music. We
remember they
always used
to play Glen
Miller’s
“In the
Mood”
every
week,”
David
said.
After
marrying,
David and Ros
built a house across
the road from Mountain
View Cottage where they lived for
many years.
Eventually David’s mother sold the cottage
to the Uniting Church in 1961, who later
on-sold it to Council in 1986.
David is happy that his childhood home
is now being used as a community
support service where social support and
community connectedness are facilitated
for almost 200 older people and young
adults with a disability.
“We’re ecstatic. We think it’s marvelously
run and so much of the cottage still looks
the way it did when we grew up. It’s been
very well preserved,” David said.
David and Ros have run many businesses
together over the years and have three
children and three grandchildren who joined

A
re you interested in being part of an interfaith network that
promotes understanding between a broad range of religious faiths?
Established in 2006, the Whitehorse
Interfaith Network (WIN) consists of various
faith groups working together to promote
understanding, respect for each other’s beliefs
and living together in peace and goodwill.
Over the years WIN has organised
different events such as tours to places
of worship, forums on spirituality,
workshops on refugees and migrants,
and seminars on youth and faith. The
network also features at Council’s
Spring Festival and the Global Fiesta.
WIN aims to raise awareness of the
importance of creating a culture of
compassion and understanding, building
bridges of cohesion and inclusion where we
can all celebrate our diversity and also to
provide a space for the local community to
be able to engage in an interfaith dialogue.
All faith groups are welcome, WIN is
supported by Council and the Victorian
Multicultural Commission.

them at their joint 80th birthday party in May
at Mountain View Cottage. David's birthday
was on 4 May and Ros turns 80 on 27 June.
They now live on 35 acres in a coastal town
in the Mornington Peninsula where they
sometimes rear cattle.
The couple is also celebrating another
significant milestone this year – their 58th
wedding anniversary.
When asked what the secret is to 58 years
of marriage, David said: “Just look after
each other.”
Whilst David has reached many milestones,
he’s showing no signs of slowing down.
He still regularly flies his Piper Cherokee
plane on a full license, allowing him to
fly anywhere – he once flew all the way
to Perth. David continues to enjoy talking
to people from across the world as an
amateur radio operator. Both David and
Ros also regularly volunteer on the Puffing
Billy steam railway in Belgrave – David as a
conductor and Ros in the shop.

Whitehorse Councillor Helen Harris said students
between 13-18 years of age are invited to participate in
an eight-week course with the aim of producing a series
of finished art pieces for exhibition.
"The students will work with professional artist Carly
Grace in a studio environment producing a series of
finished 2D and 3D artworks using a variety of mediums
including printmaking, ceramics, drawing and painting,"
Cr Harris said.
Carly Grace completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts and
Honours year at Monash University in 2004. Since then,
she has studied Public Art at RMIT and Art Education
at Monash University. Carly is the Education Manager
at Heide, Museum of Modern Art and has a Master
of Cultural Heritage at Deakin University. Carly is a
practicing artist. Her approach to art making intersects
drawing, sculpture and installation in a site-responsive,
site inspired practice.
"Students are involved in all stages of the creative
process, from developing their initial ideas to creating a
finished artwork, and then mounting and curating the
final exhibition. Students gain hands-on experience in
curating and installing an exhibition in a professional
gallery setting," Cr Harris said.
