In many ways your fly line is your single most important piece of tackle. And often the most neglected.
All the care you put into the selection of a rod and reel is pointless if your line doesn’t perform the way
it should. There’s nothing worse than a floating line that doesn’t float. Or any line that won’t shoot
through the guides. At Cortland Line Co. we produce the finest, best performing fly lines in the world. In
order to get the maximum performance from your line throughout its life may we suggest a few tips.
1. Keep it clean!
A clean line is a happy line. And a better performing line. During fishing, any fly line will pick up dirt,
algae, minerals, and in salt water, salt. These materials will stick to the finish and can reduce floatability
and shootability. They can also act like sandpaper and actually cut into the guides on your rod. Clean
lines shoot farther, float better and last longer. The best way to clean a line is by using one of the many
Non Solvent Based line cleaners widely available today. Cortland Pro Line Cleaner, a water based cleaner,
is our own choice. If you are unsure whether a cleaner is water or solvent based, ask at your local fly shop.
Solvent-based cleaners can dissolve the PVC finish of your line, resulting in a much shorter life. Stay away
from products like Armor All. While these are great for your car, they can actually melt your line’s finish!
The same goes for oil based products like WD40. These products have been recommended recently for
“making a line shoot better”, but will destroy a fly line’s finish in no time.
A good line cleaner is simple soap and water. Any good non-detergent liquid soap works fine. Just put
a few drops on a clean, wet cloth or paper towel and pull the line through it several times. Repeat with
a wet cloth (no soap) to rinse. You’ll be surprised how much dirt will come off even a clean looking line.
Now your line will shoot and float like new. It’s a good policy to clean your line after each fishing day. It
only takes a couple of minutes and will result in better line performance and more fish!
2. Give it a tug!
If you have ever watched tournament casters, you have most likely seen them stretching their lines
before competition. Any fly line will have some degree of memory from being left on the reel between
fishing trips, and taking a few seconds to stretch out the coils will pay off in ease of handling and better
shooting. Pull off the length of line that you normally cast, plus a few more feet, and simply stretch it
between your hands a few feet at a time. Give it a good tug, hold for a second, and the coils will be gone!
Wind it back on the reel and start fishing! Stretching your line is especially important in cold weather or
when fishing saltwater, (or anywhere else) where longer casts are the norm.
3. Don’t step on it!
Stepping on a fly line can damage the finish or even cut the line. This is especially true if you wear
studded or cleated wading shoes. In a boat, be careful not to stand on your line when it’s coiled on the
deck.
4. Keep it away from Solvents!
Insect repellents, gasoline, stove fuel, etc, can all dissolve the PVC finish of your line. Keep them away
from your line, but if you do spill something on it, rinse it immediately with water and wipe it with a soft
cloth or paper towel.
5. Check your rod guides!
Over time, line guides can wear out and become grooved from use. This is especially true on older rods,
which used steel snake guides. A grooved or worn guide can literally cut the finish off a fly line in no
time. Take a minute and check for guide wear, and have any worn guides replaced by the rod maker.
6. Don’t use grease type “Floatants” on modern PVC fly lines!
In the past, when fly lines were made of oiled natural silk, fishermen had to use grease to waterproof and
float their lines. Without this protection, the silk would absorb water and sink, and if left untreated would
eventually rot and break. Today, fly lines are made of inorganic nylon and plastic materials and don’t
need to be greased to “preserve’ them. Also, the floating elements are built into the line itself and anglers
don’t need to add anything to enhance the floatability of the line. In fact, using grease type floatants can
actually decrease the performance of your line and possibly harm the line’s finish. Grease will build up
on the line and make it drag in the guides. It will also attract dirt and eventually cause the line to sink!
So just keep it clean as suggested in rule 1 above and you will get the maximum performance from your
floating fly line!

An extremely reliable, single action fly reel. The Mosquito features an all metal, dual click pawl drag system
with exposed spool for rim control. Easily converted
from right hand to left hand retrieve. Spare spools are

The Crown Disc features a new design in the classic tradition. They have a super smooth disc drag for fighting
those hard running fish. Exposed rim for palming the
spool and a quick release spool.
The VISTA Click, Disc Drag and Turbine reels all feature
all aluminum bodies. The special finish is both durable

The turbine impeller, immersed in a special multiviscosity oil, produces no inertial friction at start up

CURRENT MID-ARBOR REELS
Cortland’s new “Current” Mid-Arbor reel may just be the best value in a fly reel today. And it may be just the reel
for you. This feature packed beauty starts as a solid billet of 6061T6 aluminum. It’s then machined to exacting tolerances
and hard anodized for lifetime durability in fresh or salt water. We add a fully enclosed, center mounted Rulon disc drag that
will protect 7X tippets or stop a bonefish’s sizzling run. An exposed rim lets you palm the counterbalanced, quick release
spool for even more control. The knurled bar stock drag knob is slip proof, even with wet, slimy, or cold fingers. MidArbor design gives you maximum line capacity but still has all the benefits of rapid retrieve and reduced line coiling.
All this performance is wrapped up in an attractive package. The distinct and dignified charcoal frame and pewter

Classic Trout and Classic Western - Legendary for its superb balance, smooth
action and easy casting over a variety of distances, the Classic Trout series may
be as close to the ultimate all-around trout rods as you can get. The Classic

The striped bass is arguably the most popular saltwater target for fly fishers. They are found in a
variety of fishing situations and fished for with an almost infinite variety of fly sizes. We’ve designed
a wide variety of leaders using hard monofilament for abrasion resistance and fast tapers for quick
turnover. Leaders are 4, 6 and 9 feet long and available in 6 to 20 lb. test.
BONEFISH
Successfully catching the “ghost of the flats” demands that the angler be ready for any and all conditions. Climax offers you a variety of leader lengths, tapers and tippet sizes designed by experts to cover

TROUT - FLOATING
Based on the same concept as the intermediate and sinking polytapers, these floating polytapered
leaders offer yet another level of flexibility in your fishing for when you need to change quickly
to dry flies. Floating polytapers keep the end of your fly line floating high and your tippet on the

SALTWATER/BASS/STEELHEAD POLYTAPERS
We extrude the high strength nylon core in-house to fit rigid
specifications, then coat it with our proprietary formula.
They perform ideally together acting as a shock absorber,
while giving Polytapers a stiff butt and no memory. The
secure reinforced loop on the butt end provides an ideal
loop-to-loop connection with your fly line for minimal hinging. The smaller loop on the tapered end of the leader can
be looped to the tippet. Simply form a perfection loop or
double surgeon’s loop in the tippet and connect it.

This braided line with weighted core has a loop at each end for easy attachment

Connecting the tippet and leaders through the ring will allow you to change

to be defective in workmanship or materials as long as the original
purchaser owns the reel. Should failure occur due to misuse, neglect
or normal wear, there will be a nominal charge to repair or replace
it. This warranty is not valid unless the original purchaser returns the
warranty registration card. Do not return your damaged reel to your

THE CASSETTE SYSTEM
®
Fly fishing authories have considered the true Cassette System from STH as the greatest advancement in fly reels in decades. Convenient and economical,
the Cassette System allows you to carry several different fly lines at a lower cost than conventional metal spools. You have little more than the weight of
the line to carry. There are five Cassette sizes available to cover line weights from 2 through 12. Cassettes are made of indestructible polycarbonate. STH
Cassettes will fit any Cassette reel on the market. Although the reels may be made of different materials and have different drag systems, they all accept
the same Cassettes. Cassettes are also as easy to change between left and right hand retrieves as flipping the Cassette over; no more taking the line off of

The revolutionary Turbine Drag System consists of a turbine impeller, immersed in
a special multi-viscosity fluid. This “smoother than silk” drag system provides three
benefits over traditional drag systems.
1. When a fish first takes or begins a run, there is no inertial friction to overcome. This
lack of inertial forces at start-up makes this reel a Tippet Saver since you can use
fine tippets and not worry about the fish breaking off.
2. Drag changes automatically with the speed of the fish according to the physics
principle of “action and reaction”. No need to worry about drag settings. As the fish
speeds up, the drag increases automatically (up to a maximum point that is sufficient
to slow a fish; not stop a freight train). This maximum point varies depending on
the specie usage for which the particular reel is designed. See specifications for
individual reels.
3. Spool over-run or backlash is impossible with this reel. When the fish stops it’s
run, the fluid in the turbine effectively acts as a break against the turbine and thus
stops the spool.
