Hard work: Jason Wynyard is back at his old training ground in Massey after defending his international titles.

Jason has axe to grind
By TUREI MACKEY
WOODCHOPPING champion
Jason Wynyard is continuing
his quest for sawing perfection.
The 37-year-old returned
home to Massey last week
after winning numerous
events overseas including his
ninth Stihl Timbersports title
in the United States.
He also won world individual and team titles in
Austria. At the world champs
Wynyard raised the prospect
of retiring from woodchopping.
‘‘When I was asked that
question I was a bit homesick
and just wanted to be back
here with the family,’’ he
says.
‘‘So it sounded like I was
retiring but there is no
chance of that happening – I
have at least another 10
years left in the sport.’’
But while Wynyard has no
plans of slowing down American organisers have created
plans which could halt him
and fellow Kiwi David Bolstad from continuing their
domination in the US.
Both men have ensured
only New Zealanders have
held the Timbersport series
title since 1997.
Only Americans will be
allowed to compete on the US
circuit from as early as 2012.
‘‘Unfortunately that is the
way they think they can
improve their own domestic
competitors,’’ he says.
‘‘It leaves a pretty bad taste
in your mouth when you have
dedicated and sacrificed a lot
of your time to doing well in
those
tournaments,’’
Wynyard says.
He has been invited to next
year’s series and will be
focused on putting in his best
performance in what could be
his last in the United States.
‘‘It is a little bit sad but I
guess it’s more motivation to
do really well.’’
He says whatever the
future of the sport holds he
will keep on chopping and
sawing.
‘‘It is just something I love
doing – it has its ups and
downs but I think the thing
which keeps me motivated is
how you can always do better,’’ he says.
‘‘There is always something
to work on.’’
He has no set training
regime and hasn’t picked up
any injuries from competing,
though training has given
him back problems.
‘‘I have had back troubles
in the previous years,’’ he
says.
‘‘But it’s not from competing, it was from lifting wood
blocks. So I don’t throw
things around like I used to.’’

Robin Kewell is mad on
films and wants to
spread the joy.
So when he arrived in
New
Zealand
from
Cornwall, England three
years ago he decided to
start up a film club.
The Settlers Film Club
now has around 300
members and averages
around 60 viewers per
film showing.
The movie fans gather
on the second Friday
night of the month to
watch
predominantly
award-winning global
documentaries.
‘‘I thought I’d give it a
go and now it’s one of the
few community events in
Oratia,’’ Mr Kewell says.
He is a filmmaker who
has previously worked in
the United Kingdom,
Africa
and
South
America.
He continues to work
on projects in Auckland
and operates the nonprofit film club on the
side.
‘‘I’ve got my finger in a
lot of pies,’’ he says.
The
father-of-three
has received a lot of positive
feedback
from
Oratia residents.
‘‘I’ve had people tell

‘‘I’m a big believer that
if you’re going to be part
of a community you need
to give something back.’’
He says the club is as
much about bringing
people
together
as
appreciating cinema.
‘‘Films are good, but
it’s about more than
that,’’ he says.
Settlers Film Club has
just received a $750
grant from Creative
Communities to cover its
running costs.
The club is wrapping
up for the season but
there are a few more
screenings left.

Guns and knife in raid
By STEPHEN FORBES
A $2 SHOP in Westgate was
robbed at gunpoint on Friday,
a day after an aggravated
robbery at a similar store in
Massey.
Three men entered the
E-Things
$2
shop
at
Westgate at 12.40pm on
Friday. Two of the offenders
were carrying hand guns and
the third was carrying a large
knife.
They forced the shop assistant to open the till and stole
about $200 in cash.
All three offenders fled
across
Westgate
Drive.
Witnesses saw them running
through Royal Reserve and
they were tracked through
Kemp St and Vallance St
before they got away.
Police say all three
offenders were Maori or Polynesian youths.
On Thursday an aggravated robbery occurred at the
$2 Happy Family Store in
Massey’s Chorley Ave.
Constable Steve Goodgame
says a man entered the shop
at 11.55am and demanded
money before threatening the
shop assistant with a kitchen
knife.
‘‘He took $100 from the till
and fled on foot,’’ he says.
Mr Goodgame says the
offender ran directly behind
the back of the shops.
He says a police dog handler attended the scene but
was unable to pick up a scent.
The offender is described as
dark skinned, wearing black
pants and a black hoodie
which he had pulled over his
head, a black hat, dark sunglasses and white shoes.
‘‘There was CCTV footage,
Robbery: The E-Things $2 shop at Westgate was cordoned off after
Friday’s aggravated robbery. Inset and right: CCTV footage of two
men police want to talk to.
but from what we can gather
he looked like he was aware
of it and kept his back to the
camera,’’ Mr Goodgame says.
‘‘So getting any identity
from that is pretty unlikely.’’
The shop assistant didn’t
want to be named but says
she was shaken by the robbery.
In August, the Lincoln
Heights Superette, which is
in the same block of shops on
the corner of Chorley Ave and
Waimumu Rd, was the target
of another aggravated robbery.
Detective sergeant Callum
McNeill says he’s keen to
hear from anyone with information on the two incidents.
Contact Mr McNeill on
027-275-9896 or call the
anonymous Crimestoppers
hotline on 0800-555-111 if
you can help police.
A street brawl involving up to
100 people in New Lynn over
the weekend has left a
22-year-old man fighting for
his life in hospital.
Detective senior sergeant
Stan Brown says the clash
broke out after a group of
people gatecrashed a 21st
birthday party in Riverbank Rd
on Saturday night.
‘‘There’s varying reports
about the time it happened,’’
Mr Brown says.
He says up to 100 people,
some armed with pieces of
wood, were involved in the
brawl.
Up to eight people were
treated for injuries.
A 22-year-old man was taken
to hospital with serious brain
injuries after he was found in
Binsted Rd. He is in a critical
condition.
Binsted Rd, between Rata St
and Delta Ave, was closed for
most of Sunday morning while
the crime scene was marked
out.
‘‘We would like anyone who
was at the party, whether they
saw anything or not, to
contact the Waitakere CIB,’’
Mr Brown says.
Police made eight arrests.
Call Mr Brown on 839-0600
or call the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline on 0800555-111 if you can help
police with their inquiries into
the incident.

It should have been a fairly routine, albeit high speed, test drive.
But the rear end of the M8D
Can-Am racing car came loose as
its driver, Bruce McLaren,
rocketed his way around the
Goodwood Circuit at West Sussex
in England on June 2, 1970.
The main body of the vehicle
spun out of control and left the
track before colliding with an
embankment.
Horrified spectators rushed to
the wreckage to check on its occupant – but there was nothing anyone could do.
McLaren, a huge figure in international motorsports, was dead –
killed on impact.
The 32-year-old father of one
was a household name in New
Zealand, especially in west Auckland where he’d owned Bruce
McLaren Motors on Te Atatu Rd
since 1965.
His racing exploits were legendary in Grand Prix circles and he
was the founder of the Formula 1
team that still bears his name
today.
McLaren was raised in Remuera and his family regularly
holidayed at Muriwai beach.
It was there that he got his first
taste of motor racing after
watching his father Leslie put
various cars through their paces
on the black sand at low tide.
The younger McLaren was soon
competing in hill climbs behind
the wheel of an Austin 7 Ulster
and took part in his first big race
at Ardmore when he was 16.
Various opportunities beckoned
overseas and he won his first big
grand prix event in 1959.
Life wasn’t easy for McLaren
as a youngster. He was diagnosed
with Perthes disease in his right
hip when he was nine and spent
two years in traction at the Wilson
Home for crippled children in
Takapuna.
The illness left him with one leg
shorter than the other and he
used crutches until he was around
14.
McLaren married Patricia
Broad on December 9, 1961 and
the couple had a daughter named
Amanda four years later.
The family lived in the United
Kingdom, occasionally returning
to New Zealand for holidays.
McLaren’s death at the height
of such a promising and fruitful
career rocked all those who knew
him personally and by reputation.
His body was brought home and
tributes flowed thick and fast during a funeral at St Mary’s
Anglican Cathedral.
A school in Henderson was
named after him a year later as a
sign of respect as was the road it
sits on.
McLaren was buried at
Waikumete Cemetery where the
remains of his parents also lie in
neighbouring graves.
Household name: The late Bruce
McLaren.
RIP: The grave of Bruce McLaren at
Waikumete Cemetery.

Kids living in the language
By VANITA PRASAD
Te reo Maori is far from
dead, say three award
winning orators from
west Auckland’s Nga
Kakano Christian Bilingual School.
The three students
placed highly at the
Maori Women’s Welfare
League national speech
competition which took
place at its annual conference in Gisborne last
month.
The students represented the only school at
the competition that does
not teach in full immersion classes.
Mohi Allen, 14, took
first place in the intermediate boys category
with his toku oranga, or
speech about his life.
He says while Maori is
not widely spoken the
language is not dead,
contrary to Nga Puhi
leader David Rankin’s
comment that it wouldn’t
survive.
Mr Rankin comments
came in response to the
latest Waitangi Tribunal
report which indicated
that in the last 20 years
there has been a decline
in people wanting to
learn te reo Maori.
He suggested that
Maori will be a dead
to preserve his culture
for the next generation.
‘‘He taught us to hold
on to and pass down our
ancestors’ sayings to our
children.
‘‘He was a good man
for passing on his wisdom,’’ Te Ruki says.
He enjoys speaking
Maori.
‘‘Speaking te reo is fun
and cool.’’
Kaysaylia
Martin
Moore, 14, came second
in the intermediate girls
section.
She hopes to take out
the top spot next year
after getting her highest
placing after five years of
competing.
Nga Kakano Christian
Bilingual School principal Te Rangi Allen says
Waitakere is leading the
way for young urban
Maori learning their
language.
He attributes this to
the establishment of the
school at Hoani Waititi
Marae.
‘‘It’s because of their
initiative that we have
these bilingual schools
out west.

Dear Auckland
Welcome to Watercare
This is our rst week of delivering water and wastewater services directly to your
homes and businesses. As you may be aware, your water accounts transferred
automatically to Watercare on Monday, as part of the local government changes.
You may be wondering how this will affect the services you receive. We can assure
you that we are used to providing millions of litres of drinking water every day. It is
what we have been doing since 1992, along with treating wastewater and managing
pipe networks.
What has changed is that we are now serving you directly. Future water and
wastewater bills will come from Watercare. This change means there may be hiccups
as we nd our feet. We can assure you though; our dedicated team will work hard to
x these quickly.
If you have any questions or feedback, please call. Our Customer Services team is
available on (09) 442 2222 from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. If you have a fault
or an emergency, we are available on (09) 442 2222; 24 hours, 365 days of the year.
You can also visit us at www.watercare.co.nz.
It is worth remembering that your account transferred automatically, so there is no
action you need to take.
We look forward to delivering you a great service, every minute of every day.

Chanelle hits the road with new songs

Singer-songwriter Chanelle

to road test her new songs
after a three-month sojourn to
the United States.
The Te Atatu resident is
looking forward to touring the
country with dates in Auckland, Wellington, Taupo,
Rotorua, Hamilton and Tauranga over the next month.
The self-described jazz pop
artist will perform at
Henderson’s Flax Café on
November 13.
The past 12 months have
been a learning curve for
Chanelle.
In 2009 she met Pat Pattison, a professor from Boston’s
Berklee College of Music in
the United States. Pat regularly
holds
songwriting
workshops in New Zealand.
He asked Chanelle if she
wanted to fly to Canada to
attend a songwriters’ retreat
where he was teaching.
The two hit it off and he
asked her to travel to Boston
in January this year to concentrate on her songwriting.
‘‘It was the best three
months of my life,’’ she says.
‘‘I was free to just be a
songwriter, to really spread
my wings and see what I
could do. I left Boston in April
2010 with a whole new focus

Politics can be a roller-coaster and I
have certainly had my share of ups
and downs in the past few months.
I want to assure readers that I will
continue to work hard as your MP
during the time that I hold the job. I
have been the local MP for Te Atatu
for 15 years and in that time the work
that I have done to support
constituents, fight for issues like
protecting the remaining open land in
Te Atatu Peninsula and supporting
institutions like our local schools and
Waitakere Hospital, have been the
most rewarding part of my job.
I think most people realise that I
have had a pretty stressful year with
the media focus around my workrelated ministerial travel and
disappointment that I have not been
supported through this by my former
leader Phil Goff and his team.
However, many people face
challenges in life and being a cabinet
minister for six years and the MP for
Te Atatu have been a privilege, an
honour, and an opportunity which I
will always be grateful for.
My office in Henderson will continue
to be a place where we will try to assist
readers with any of the issues that
local members of Parliament are asked
to help with. I want to thank local
residents for their support through
these difficult months.

First home
The national papers recently stated
home affordability for first home
buyers in Auckland is beyond their
reach.
And that young married couples will
be forced to rent all their adult life.
Today many young people’s
expectations are very high and they
seek homes in high priced areas.
Also reported was that newly
arrived immigrants don’t like to live in
the west, reasons unknown. There is
nothing wrong with buying your first
home in west Auckland – it’s a great
place to live and play.
Your first home can cost you around
$300,000 if you have saved a deposit. A
loan of $240,000 for 25 years is $360
per week mortgage repayments – less
than paying rent in many instances. In
time, the first home buyer may be in a
better financial position to sell and buy
in preferred locations.

Testament
As our city draws to a close, I reflect on
my past six years as a Waitakere
councillor.
They have been interesting, busy
and rewarding years. There have been
many good things achieved to bring
our facilities and services up to par
with the rest of the region and in many
cases we are streets ahead.
Our beautiful libraries, new railway
stations, the Trusts Stadium and Te
Pai Centre, environmental initiatives
like Project Twin Streams, and
numerous community and government
agency partnerships that have
developed are a testament to a
boldness, innovation and nerve that
was needed to achieve at that level.
There will be still more projects to
come from our current Annual Plan
which are of regional importance and
will firmly cement west Auckland as a
key part of achieving a truly greater
Auckland in social and economic
terms.
We have a lot to be proud of and at
the core are the people who made it
happen. Terrific people who have
worked hard in an inclusive way to
make our city liveable and loveable.
To mayor Bob Harvey and all my
fellow councillors, community board
members and council officers I give my
heartfelt thanks for the work that you
have undertaken to deliver our
community goals. As for the people of
Waitakere, you are a magnificent
group who have made sure you had
your say, let us know when you didn’t
like something and also let us know
when we got it right.
You have worked with us on many
projects and I ask that you keep your
new local boards on their toes to the
same level as you always have the
council. Your input and partnership is
still needed.
Lastly I want to express my thanks
to all of you I have met and worked
with in my time as a councillor for
your support and encouragement. It
has meant everything to me.

Stuttering
I found your article, Early help
smooths bumpy words, about Luke
Vercoe’s stuttering to be immensely
accurate.
First, I commend Luke and his
parents for going public with this story
because it will help countless other
children who stutter and their parents.
The Stuttering Treatment and
Research Trust sounds like a clinic
dedicated to providing quality speech
therapy to children. However, what I
found most striking is the headline,
because ‘‘early help’’ is essential.
As you can imagine, experts have
varying views on the causes and
treatments of childhood stuttering.
However, all agree that early and
immediate intervention with a speech
therapist is a must.
About 4 percent of all children
stutter at some point, and 75 percent
stop stuttering. Bringing a child to a
speech therapist immediately when he
or she starts stuttering is something
every parent should do.
I would like to point out some good
sources on childhood and adult
stuttering. Here in the United States,
the website of The Stuttering
Foundation (www.stutteringhelp.org)
offers free resources like brochures,
streaming videos and more. The site
also has an extensive list of famous
people who stutter as well as a
celebrity corner section of articles
about famous people and how they
cope with stuttering. For young people
to learn that famous people share their
speech problem gives them hope and
inspiration. Also, an excellent website
is The British Stammering Association
(www.stammering.org) that gives
information for people who stutter of
all ages.
Once again, I thank you for
publishing this article because it will
definitely help other families like the
Vercoes. I read this article on an e-list
for people who stutter, so you can be
sure it was read all over the world.

OPINION
WESTERN LEADER, NOVEMBER 2, 2010
Hobbit drama with a Dibley touch
Not quite the greatest show
on earth, a short season, but
easily the best in town.
It had everything – including that potential promotional line about secret stars
‘‘flown in direct from Hollywood’’.
Plus
anger,
threats,
recriminations,
backroom
drama, allegations of doubledealing, stage maidens in distress, suspense, a cameo performance from Trevor Mallard last seen in that failed
Auckland project On the
Waterfront – and a final
upbeat climax.
Even borrowed humour.
That came from, of all places,
old scripts of The Vicar of
Dibley.
Reworked
–
actually
worked to death by John Key
– it was a standout whenever
the media asked whether
Cabinet would push more
millions the way of the mysterious movie men only
glimpsed through the glass of
ministerial limos.
Remember?
His answer: ‘‘No, no, no, no,
no, no – yes.’’
★★★
In the mailbag, road-users’
rage from Mercer to Warkworth:
‘‘I am with you on the total
inadequacy of the local road
construction cartel. They
build low-quality roads. How
can the new State Highway 1
bit at Mercer be so bumpy?
It’s brand new! They take forever to build them.
‘‘The sloppy work they do
rewards them as they have to
do it all over again soon after.
Whoever heard of major
bridges being obsolete after
50 years, like the Newmarket
Viaduct and the harbour
bridge?
‘‘On top of this, they charge
an arm and a leg for their
poor work.
‘‘The Newmarket Viaduct
cost $215 million while the
incredible 300-metre high,
2.5km long Millau Viaduct in
France cost only five times as
much; we’d just get one of the
seven French piers here on
the Newmarket budget.
‘‘These guys are bankrupting the country.’’

‘‘Over the past 18 months
that road ‘upgrade’ at Warkworth has baffled myself and
my wife – as the same mentality is prevalent elsewhere
in the Auckland region – professed experts cannot see the
wood for the trees, and
nobody asks any questions.
‘‘The simple fact is that a
two-lane bridge exists 50 to
100 metres away from the
‘upgrade’ with the OmahaTawharanui-Leigh-Matakana
Warkworth, etc, junction
beyond.
‘‘We travel north regularly,
leaving North Shore at 4 to
4.30am on long weekends,
and 11pm to midnight on the
return journey. Getting our
little girl out of bed at that
hour is a small price to pay as
opposed to the chaos which is
now obviously set to remain
in force – after the ‘upgrade’.
‘‘All over the region, road
planners appear to have a fixation with funnelling people
into an already existing
bottleneck.
‘‘They seem to operate with
impunity, creating such
havoc.
‘‘Examples from North
Shore: Large stuff-up (unfixable) – Tristram Ave
motorway-Wairau Rd on and
off-ramp junctions. Another
marvellous funnelling effect –
complete with light phasing
to complement the chaos.
‘‘Moderate/large stuff-up
(possibly fixable but with
further chaos) – Northcote on
and off-ramp. The same
single-lane motorway entry
city-bound and on-lane exit
northbound. This has existed
for as long as I can remember
before the sale and development of the huge Smales
Farm business park.
‘‘Of course city-bound cars
still attempt to pull in hard
left from the straight-through
lane (intended for Northcotebound traffic) and have done
so for years.
‘‘Did
anyone
forecast
Smales Farm? Also, in the
other direction, try to cross
three lanes of traffic within
50 metres to turn left to
North Shore Hospital after
the motorway exit.
‘‘Minor/stupid – someone
thought it would be a good
idea to change the sign at the
bottom of Killarney St at the
Kitchener Rd intersection
from a stop sign to a mergegive way. Quite entertaining
watching the dodgem show
on Kitchener Rd.
‘‘Minor/hopeful – probably
the same person – thought to
erect a sign on the roundabout at the intersection of
Kitchener Rd-Anzac StHurstmere Rd-The Strand to
test pedestrians’ nerve and
willpower, and to amuse us
motorists. It says – ‘‘Caution,
motorists have the right of
way’’.
‘‘This is for people crossing
the footpath and entry to The
Strand, allowing cars to turn
left and not become ‘Stranded’ in the middle of the
roundabout.
‘‘Needless to elaborate
what actually happens.
‘‘We wait with bated breath
to see what happens to the
current Lake Rd-Hauraki
Corner-Napier Ave two-year
project. All bets are off.’’

★★★
‘‘Others who’ve sat in a
queue for nearly two hours
from Puhoi to Warkworth,
only moving momentarily for
traffic lights in Warkworth to
turn green, must have had
the same thought.
‘‘Forget the millions of
dollars for bypasses and other
money-wasting
projects,
switch off the traffic lights
and put a pointsman on duty.
The salary of a few pointsmen at public holidays would
save us taxpayers millions on
unnecessary roading projects.’’
– Name provided
★★★
‘‘I couldn’t agree more with
you about our supposed
‘expert’ roading engineers.
‘‘I travelled over that new
piece of road at Warkworth
over the weekend, and even
though it wasn’t rush hour I
wondered why they haven’t
built a four-lane bridge.
‘‘For all the millions of
dollars that cost – that piece
of road achieves nothing
other than creating another
bottleneck.
‘‘Then there’s Waterview
Connection Project. I only
very recently found out a
vital detail for this.
‘‘There will be no entrance
or exit (on or off-ramps) at
the Waterview interchange
for the tunnels.
‘‘Residents from Pt Chevalier, Waterview, Mt Albert,
Avondale, etc, will have no
access to the tunnels at all at
Waterview.
‘‘They will have to go to St
Lukes interchange (backtracking in all cases) to join
the motorway there and then
travel back along the
motorway to the tunnels.
‘‘There are no plans to
upgrade St Lukes interchange to cope with this (and
the increased traffic from an
enlarged Westfield St Lukes
Mall).
‘‘The overall effect would be
one of increased local road
impact and a huge inconvenience to local residents.
‘‘Waterview is a major
interchange and yet once
again there is a half-hearted
attempt to fix the problems.’’
– Terry Small, Pt Chevalier

The HealthWEST PHO Diabetes Eye Screening service is free for anybody who has Diabetes Type 1 or Type 2
and who lives (or works) in the Waitakere area.
Damage to your eyes can occur without your noticing any major changes to your eyesight.
If you are diagnosed with diabetes it is important you have your eyes checked at least every two years. These
checks can find any changes in your eyes (which could lead to blindness) and you may be referred for further
treatment to prevent more damage. Regular eye checks are important.
If the retina (thin tissue on the back surface of the eye) is damaged (retinopathy) then the things you look at
(images) cannot get to your brain for you to “see”. If the damaged area is significant, you may have difficulty
reading, watching TV, driving, cooking meals or watching your whanau play and grow up.
What does the damage do?
The retina receives light and helps us to “see” what we are looking at. In the early stages of damage occurring
(due to diabetes) there may be a small amount of bleeding from the small damaged blood vessels in your eye, this
causes problems to the retina.
As the damage tries to repair itself new blood vessels replace the damaged ones and this can cause scar tissue to
form on the back of the eye, or it may cause the retina to “break away” (detach) from the surface it is attached
to. This can lead to loss of part, or all, of your vision/eyesight.
You are more at risk if:
• You have had diabetes for a long time
• You have had high blood sugar levels over a long time
• You also have high blood pressure, which is not controlled with weight loss or medication
• You become pregnant
• You don’t take your prescribed diabetes medicine (insulin or tablets) regularly
What is screening and what happens?
The Nurse talks with you first and checks your medications, checks your eyesight (with your glasses on if you
wear them), and puts some special drops into your eyes to help the camera see into the back of the retina.
You will then be asked to sit in front of a special camera in a darkened room and a screener takes a photo of your
retina. The screening only takes a few minutes and doesn’t hurt. The screener may be able to tell you about the
results straight away, or, in some cases, the photos may need to be reviewed by the specialist..
Eye damage, due to diabetes, is one of the main causes of blindness in working aged people with diabetes who
have not been diagnosed, or those who don’t take their medication properly.
Treatment
Treatment may be given by specialists, called Ophthalmologists, at Waitakere Hospital or Greenlane Hospital.
One way to treat the damage is with laser therapy, which is very effective and safe, but this needs to be done
before too much damage has occurred. Laser therapy cannot give you back your eyesight once you are blind.
Protection against Diabetic Eye Damage
• Once you’re diagnosed with diabetes, your doctor or nurse should refer you to the retinal screening service,
which holds free clinics at Massey, Ranui, Te Atatu, Glen Eden and at Waitakere Hospital. You may be given
another appointment for continued screening or the retinal screener can refer you to a specialist for further
assessment and possible treatment if needed.
• Important protection: reducing weight, reducing blood pressure and managing your blood sugar levels. Ask for
referral to the Diabetes Self Management courses (Maori & Pacific cultural courses are available too)
• Also important is regular exercise to maintain a good weight, stop smoking and having regular check-ups with
your doctor or nurse for your blood pressure and taking medication as prescribed by your doctor.
• 2 yearly retinal screening is another important protection, as the team can advise you on how to prevent
further damage.
• HealthWEST PHO’s retinal screening service is FREE and easy to get to.
• Our staff are friendly, supportive and happy to answer any questions about your screening at any time. They
are there to help you.
Please see your doctor if you have diabetes, and haven’t been referred to the retinal screening service already.
If you have missed an appointment please contact our Clinic Coordinator on (09) 838 1703 for a new time and

Help is at hand for
varicose vein sufferers
Painful, unsightly varicose veins can cause no
end of unnecessary angst
and embarrassment for
sufferers, however, help
is at hand in the form of
the experienced team at
The Vein Clinic in Glenfield.
At The Vein Clinic
they offer an array of different treatment options
for varicose veins and
using their expertise, the
team are able to help you
decide which one is best
for you after considering
factors like anatomy,
lifestyle, health and your
budget.
‘‘Modern management
includes surgery, but
also non-surgical treatments. They are effective, intrude little into
lifestyles, and are done
on an outpatient basis,’’
says Dr Heather McIntyre, a vein physician at
the clinic.
Treatment
options
available include:
❚ Compression stockings
and conservative symptomatic treatment
❚ Surgery
❚ Endovenous
laser
ablation (EVLA)
❚ Fluoroscopic
ultrasound
guided
sclerotherapy (FUGS)
and direct microsclerotherapy for smaller veins.
‘‘As we have experience in all treatments
and options, including
what happens if nothing
is done, this is discussed
with a patient, and often
the patient will make the
final decision on which
path to take,’’ says Dr
McIntyre.
‘‘Our experience with
EVLA now numbers over
1000
procedures.
Initially the recurrence

percent.
But
with
increased
operator
experience and improved
apparatus developments
in EVLA, there has been
an improved patient
experience and lower
recurrence rates that
rival surgery.’’
‘‘However, all treatments do have a recurrence rate, as no treatment can stop the inborn
tendency to develop varicose veins,’’warns Dr
McIntyre.
Duplex
Ultrasound
also provides an important tool in the management of varicose veins.
Ultrasound demonstrates anatomy, where
leaking valves are, reflux
characteristics, and is
also used for the detection and management of
deep vein clots (DVT).
Ultrasonographers
undergo special training
in vascular ultrasound.
The Vein Clinic’s
ultrasonographers, Judy
Tee and Nicki Kerin,
have both had this
advanced training.

Out with the old and in
with the new.
The supercity’s rebranding is under way
with signs at 86 sites
replaced before the
Auckland Council came
into effect yesterday.
One of the first to go
was the Welcome to
Manukau sign at Auck-
land airport. Mayor Len
Brown says it marks a
‘‘milestone’’ in the move
towards a united Auckland.
‘‘It couldn’t be in a
more fitting position welcoming the thousands of
visitors who fly into the
airport and the thousands of Aucklanders returning home.
‘‘It’s also fitting that

were
also
changed. Other interior
and exterior signs will be
changed later.
Rebranding of street
signs, parks and public

year.

Communication is key
By BY DAVID KNEEBONE, MANAGER,
SORTED.ORG.NZ
Sometimes when it comes to switching
banks or choosing a KiwiSaver scheme
it feels like you need a degree to make
sense of what is happening to your
money.
That’s why it’s important to consider
how your bank, insurer, investment
company, or KiwiSaver provider will
communicate with you before you sign
on the dotted line.
Clear and regular communication
from your financial provider will
ensure you make the best choices for
your own circumstances and stay in
control of your finances, as well as
avoiding any unpleasant surprises.
When shifting banks or KiwiSaver
providers, check out how well they
communicate. Visiting their website is
a good first step. Does it have the kind
of information you’re after and is it
easy to understand?
Find out how regularly the provider
sends out statements and if you can
access information about your account
quickly and easily. If the information
they supply isn’t clear, easy to understand and as regular as you would like,
consider a different provider.
Give them a call and see what their
telephone communication is like – does
it take them long to answer your call?
Request some information be sent to
you. How long does it take to arrive
and do you understand it? If not, they
probably aren’t right for you.
Many financial organisations are
striving to do a better job to communicate with investors and potential
investors. Workplace Savings NZ has
an annual industry awards programme to acknowledge organisations
that are communicating well. The
People’s Choice KiwiSaver Award
gives KiwiSaver members the opportunity to rate their provider’s communications from ‘very poor’ to ‘very
good’.
It’s your chance to have your say
about how well your KiwiSaver provider communicates. Voting is open
now at the Workplace Savings New
Zealand website www.workplace
savings.org.nz/peoples-choice-award/.

Viennese ball to keep you on your toes
By MICHELLE COOKE
Auckland is hosting the
first Viennese ball in
Australasia – and it’s all
for a worthy cause.
Viennese balls are
known for their sophistication.
Ladies wear glamorous gowns and men are
in black ties.
It’s being marketed as
a ‘‘socially elite occasion’’
– with a soft spot.
All profits from the
Grand Auckland Ball on
November 27 go to the
New Zealand Breast
Cancer Foundation.
Dance partners Ashan
Samarasinghe and Ellie
Vander Swan, from
Auckland, are excited to
be part of the unique
event.
‘‘We want to be part of
it because it’s been going
since the 1700s and it’s
to do with dancing and
we have such a passion
for
dancing,’’
Mr
Samarasinghe says.
The pair has been
dancing together for just
over six months but have
already won a number of
awards.
People keen to attend
the glamorous event are
encouraged to take dancing lessons.
Fifty couples will set
the tone for the event as
they dance in alignment
at the opening ceremony.
This is one of the
traditions that is followed in order to make it
an official Viennese ball.
The tradition was
initiated in 1773 under
the
patronage
of
Emperor Franz Joseph II
in Vienna, Austria.
It has since spread to
more than 42 countries,
with most holding the
ball as an annual event.
Dances
include
waltzes, polkas, and the
quadrille which has been
described by organisers
as ‘‘line dancing but
more hectic and fun’’.
Music from the Auckland
Philharmonia
Orchestra and other
groups will keep the
mood uplifted throughout the night.

‘‘We’re really enthusiastic about it being a

We want stalls with tactile approaches which

Other ideas in the
pipeline include wine
sales where visitors can
bring their picnics and
enjoy

‘‘We also want something

Pair’s stand helps
Suburbs to victory
A lower order stand by
Michael Bates and
Abdullah Sayed has
seen Suburbs New Lynn
win their round four
match against Papatoetoe on Saturday.
Bates’ score of 83 and
Sayed’s contribution of
20 helped to make up for
the team’s middle order
collapse.
Bates also lead the
bowling attack with
three wickets for 30 runs
to halt Papatoetoe at
125 all out.
Suburbs will now face
Takapuna at Onewa

batsman Hendro Puchert faces
