The importance that the city acquired during the period of the Spanish Empire made this metropolis one of the most important cities in the world during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In “The Heroic” city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the colonial and the modern coexist: cathedrals, plazas, small streets, mansions and fortified walls, besides world-class restaurants, great boutiquehotels, bars for all tastes and, an hour away by sea, paradise-like Islas del Rosario. The San Austin Archaeological Park contains hundreds of mythical statues, some of over seven meters high. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as “the largest group of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures in South America”. From the Macarena Mountains emerges a river like no other. “The river that came down from heaven,” Caño Cristales, looks more like a work of impressionist art than a river thanks to the red, green, yellow and purple tones of its underwater vegetation.
