Plan in place for
aquatic center
Rachel Greco
[email protected]
CHARLOTTE —
This
Monday, Aug. 15, the Board
of Education will vote on
whether or not to ask voters
in November for a millage
to support the Charlotte
Aquatic Center.
If the .5 mill proposal
makes it on the ballot this
fall, Charlotte Schools
Superintendent Nancy Hipskind said school officials
and pool supporters have
their work cut out for
them.
The
measure,
if
approved, would supplement operations at the
center — opened in 2004
and still being paid for by
taxpayer dollars — for just
five years.
After that, supporters of
the center will have needed
to implement a “marketing
plan” developed to help the
facility grow its user base
and to help it pay for itself.
August 14, 2011
Growing use
Adam Jones is the
aquatic center supervisor
and was a member of the
14-member marketing committee charged with creating a plan to help the facility
become more self-sustaining. Jones said the key to
getting there exists now.
“It’s going to be a tough
road, just like anything,” he
said.
“But if we attack it the
right way, this plan will
work.”
The aquatic center’s
annual budget is between
$300,000 and $350,000. Student use accounts for anywhere between $70,000 and
$100,000 of that.
Hipskind said that leaves
over $200,000 a year that
officials are hoping the
center can generate itself
after five years.
During
its
busiest
months, in the winter, the
center sees an average of
1,300 visitors. Hipskind
believes that number needs
to climb to an average of
2,000 per month all year
long.
“When we say we have
people there, yes we do
but we don’t have enough
people there,” she said. “We
don’t have enough people in
any age group.”
The center’s marketing
plan aims to offer more
attractions for recreational
activity — both for kids and
adults.
Just a week ago the staff
debuted its new $10,000
wibit. Three-fourths of the
cost for the giant inflatable
toy/obstacle course was
paid for with a private donation.
Jones said it is just the
beginning of offering pool
goers more to do at the
facility — beyond swimming laps and swimming

AL!VE project taking shape

CHARLOTTE — Patrick
Sustrich can walk you
around the dusty, busy
AL!VE property and point
out the key areas as they
are taking shape.
Sustrich is the future
director of the project,
Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital’s visionary
“wellness hub” — that will
offer everything from
women’s health services to
an indoor walking path and
health-food cafe.
In its first phase AL!VE
will be a 45,000 square feet
endeavor at the former Felpausch location off Lawrence Avenue. It’s price tag
of $12.6 million is just the
beginning.
The hospital raised $10
million to get the concept
off the ground and fund
raising has thus far generated $2.7 million.
Hospital officials need
to raise a total of $4 million
before AL!IVE’s second
phase can begin. That will
include
a
conference
center and children’s programming and child care.
The facility is tentatively scheduled to open in
late October. Sustrich said
a community open house is
being planned for Oct. 23.
In three months a lot
will have to happen.
Big plans
“There will be something for everyone,” said
Sustrich, who stresses that
the project is a whole lot

more than an extension
of the hospital’s Health
and Wellness Center. “Anything that makes you feel
alive counts. Coming to an
outdoor courtyard and de
stressing after work is just
as fundamental to health
as working out is.”
When AL!IVE opens this
fall it will offer two outdoor
courtyards,
a
multi-purpose gym, physical and occupational therapy, women’s services and
a demonstration kitchen —
alone with fitness and education programs. It will
also include a staff of about
35 people.
“For the most part
construction is on schedule,” explained Sustrich,
and although recent heavy
rains presented a challenge
to construction crews all
the buildings dry wall is up
and brick work on site is
nearly done.
In the next few weeks
construction crews will
install all the glass, enclosing the building and clearing the way for the
installation of equipment,
carpeting and furniture
throughout the building.
Collaboration
When it’s doors are open
Sustrich said HGB hopes
every Charlotte area resident takes advantage of
what AL!VE will offer.
“We’ve set a goal of
8,000 visits a month,” he
explained.
In order to make that
happen, Sustrich said
working with the community — including the city
government, school district and civic groups — is
a must.
“The whole project is
built upon community collaboration,” said Sustrich.
“That’s one of our guiding
principals.”
Those in the community
are following suit, showing
support for AL!VE.
Just last month the
Charlotte City Council
voted to waive building
inspection fees for the hospital project, so far totaling $35,000, in exchange
for using a small portion
of the AL!VE property for

CHARLOTTE LIONS CELEBRATE WITH
A ‘TASTE OF CHARLOTTE’
In typical fashion, the Charlotte Lions Club will celebrate
70 years of serving the greater Charlotte community with
little fanfare or self-recognition. Instead, the members have
decided to provide a great opportunity for local restaurants
to connect with customers, old and new.
A "Taste of Charlotte," featuring at least 10 local eating
establishments, will be held on the Courthouse Square
Lawn on Thursday, August 18th. The event has been
coordinated with Charlotte DDA's Concerts on the Square.
Lions Club members will sell tickets for $1 and restaurants
will offer sample of their regular menu for one to two tickets
each.
The Lions Club mission is: To empower volunteers to serve
their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage
peace and promote international understanding through
Lions clubs.
If you would like to add something into the

Synder signs bill introduced by Shaughnessy
CHARLOTTE — Michigan
Gov. Rick Snyder recently
signed into law a bill
introduced by state Rep.
Deb Shaughnessy helping
school
districts
save
taxpayer money.
“I am pleased that my
first bill signed into law
will help save valuable
taxpayer dollars, allowing
more money to be spent
directly on students,” said
Shaughnessy, R-Charlotte.
“School districts are
facing difficult budget
decisions
much
like
families across Michigan.
This new law is an
important step to give
schools the ability to deal
with our current economic
realities. It will also allow
school employees to make
more informed decisions
regarding their health
care.”
House Bill 4700 requires
local school districts to be
the policy holder or have
access to specific claims
data before entering into a
health insurance contract.
If the district is not the
direct policy holder, they
can request access to
specific data about how the
plan was used. Steps were
taken to insure the privacy
and
confidentiality
of
district employees.

of Representatives

CPAC summer musical camp draws big response
CHARLOTTE — Over 50
students engaged themselves in song, dance and
dramatic
performance
during the recent Summer
Musical Theatre Camp presented at the Charlotte Performing Arts Center.
Judging
from
the
response of over 350
audience members who
attended the performance
on the last day of the camp,
the camp was an overwhelming success.
Students participating in
the camp enjoyed an exciting theatrical experience
that included instruction in
how to audition, choreography, music direction and
exposure to award-winning
musicals.
The two-week camp culminated in a final performance of skits, musical
numbers and a special production of “Disney’s Jungle
Book Kids.”
The Broadway Kids participants, who were in
grades two through five,
learned about the different
aspects of putting together
a musical. They spent most
of their time preparing to
perform “Disney’s Jungle
Book Kids,” which was no
easy task.
Auditions were held on
the first day of camp with
parts assigned and every
day they worked on a different part of the show. Many
of the participants had lines
to memorize and all had
songs and dances to learn.
The Broadway Teens
participants, who were in
grades six through 10, had
a different camp experience. Their days consisted
in part of “scene work”
which involved learning
various songs from musicals (“Les Miserables,”
“The Sound of Music,”
“Guys & Dolls” and “The
Producers,” to name a few)
and preparing to act, sing,
and dance them during the
final performance. The
pieces that were selected
consisted of solos, duets,
and group songs that showcased the many talents
within the Broadway Teens
group.
Since the first camp in
2007, attendance has grown
each year and the reaction
from campers and parents
has been extremely positive.
Numerous parents commented that their children
were demonstrating lessons
learned at camp while at
home, and were already
looking forward to next
year’s theater camp experience.
Camp co-directors Hollie
Auten and Amanda Smith
and assistant director Sarah
Shoemaker were very
pleased with the outcome
of the camp.
“We learned many things
from this year’s camp experience that we will attempt
to incorporate into future

Watch out for animals in the heat Darell D. Vroman

manifest themselves only
during times of stress, like
increased heat.
Recently there was some
attention drawn to a syndrome of scalding in animals. Apparently in an
attempt to cool their pets
off, owners would douse
their pets in water from the
hose. On hot days, water in
the hose can be intensely
hot when first turned on and
can cause severe burns! So
be sure and let the water
run out if the hose has
been sitting in the sun for a
while.
Be sure to have lots of
water available to your pet.
NEWS BRIEF
Dems to host golf outing Aug. 20
Eaton County Democrats are hosting a golf outing
the morning of Aug. 20 at Ledge Meadows Golf Course,
Grand Ledge.
A
few
openings
are
left;
e-mail
[email protected] or call (517) 881-5915 to sign
up. Cost: Individuals, $60; teams, $240. Skins, mulligans,
50/50 and prizes include $5,000 for hole-in-one.
It is easy to forget when
playing outside, that the
regular sources of water
your pet depends on are all
inside.
If your pet must be
outside monitor them frequently and make sure they
have access to food and
shade all day long. Remember, shade moves throughout the day and sometimes
out of range for some poor
animals. If it is over 100 in
air temperatures it is really
best to bring your pet inside
with you.
Just like humans, pets
with allergies, respiratory
disease or natural inclination to respiratory distress
including bulldogs pugs and
boston terriers all need special attention during excess
heat. The very young and
very old should be monitored for distress. They
should only go out in early
cool or late evening strolls.
White animals are at
higher risk for skin cancers
especially around the eyes
and nose so dab a bit of
suntan lotion on pets that is
label safe whenever going
out in the sun. A good idea is,
if you use sunscreen yourself; apply it to your dog
as well. Some dogs, especially white pattern short
haired dogs including pitbulls, have an inherited
allergic reaction to the sun.
Those pets should stay out
of the sun as much as possible. This is unfortunate
because they tend to be sun
worshippers!
Signs of heat stress
include excess panting, confusion, weakness, rapid
heartbeat, high fever and
ultimately, collapse. If you
see any of these signs you
should apply cool but not
cold compresses to the pet’s
body and transport them
to the veterinarian. There
are measures that should
be taken to prevent further
damage from the heat created in the body.
If you just see to a few
preventative tasks then you
and your pet can have a safe
and fun time this summer.

and Country Animal Hospital.

We are in the midst of
the summer heat and need
to remember to watch out
for our pets as well as ourselves. It seems like everyone should know by now
but, do not leave your pet
in the car, even with the
windows open the temperatures can reach a dangerous level in minutes on a
reasonably warm day too.
The primary way that
our dogs and cats get rid of
excess heat is to pant. Panting decreases the core body
temperature. The body’s
cooling system is less effective on humid days or when
the animal is in an enclosed
space. When a cat pants
for long periods of time,
this can indicate heart or
lung changes that will
