Spanish Class Gets a Special Visit
By Mariah Sortman
Spanish class got
more interesting on April 23 when two
guest speakers came from Panama
and Colombia. This special opportunity
took place periods 1, 2, and 3, but students who have Spanish in later periods could get a pass if they had study
hall to attend one session.
Maria Clara Sanchez
Vanegas, 26, is from Colombia. She
made a special PowerPoint presentation that explained her home country’s
culture, geography, location, etc. Maria
said that our school’s structure is really
different from hers at home. She has
been to the malls up here and they
even have a McDonald’s in Colombia.
Despite being really quiet, she grabbed
the students’ attention.
Julissa Vasquez, 37,
is from Panama. She has only been
here for two weeks. She got satellite
pictures off the computer to show her
country’s hot spots, culture, seasons,
geography, etc. Like Maria, her
school’s structure is quite different
from ours. She said she likes to go to
beaches and go to parties in her home
country. Here she likes to go to all the
different places. She said, “It is very
nice here but I would go back home.”
Spanish teacher Mrs.
Debra Bressler said there are many
benefits from the guests visiting our
school’s Spanish classes. “Someone
other than a teacher can carry more
credibility and they are experts of their
own country and they can answer
more questions than a teacher not familiar with that area,” said Bressler. “It
is also nice to have a break from me
and it brings a change to the classroom. Sometimes they bring their own
resources which helps out a lot.”
“The girls did a great
job for 1, 2, and 3 period. Julissa was
only here for two weeks so her English
wasn’t proficient but everyone could
understand her,” stated Bressler.
The classes got some
special opportunities during the special
visit from the guests. One opportunity
is Homestay. Homestay is where a
foreign language student comes to live
in your home for a week, month or
year. As stated by Mrs. Bressler it is
highly recommended because in order
to communicate you need to learn the
language. You will find it is a necessity
to learn the language to be comfortable with the special foreign guest living in your home. You can also learn
the language faster. But that isn’t all
the opportunities the students got.
FLS, or Foreign Language Services, is affiliated with Lock
Haven University but they have their
own classes for the students. There
are students from all over the world
that come to our area to learn English.
For more information contact Mrs.
Donovan at LHU if interested in being
a host family for a week to a couple of
weeks.
Overall, these special
guests really enraptured the students
and got to have some laughs, making
for a Spanish class that was more than
interesting.
Student Gets Note-Worthy Recognition
By Chelsea Moore
For the first time since 1986, a student from Jersey Shore advanced to the next level of the Pennsylvania State Choral Competition. That student is music buff Karianne Miller (11), member of JSHS’s chorus and band ensemble. This competition was huge, with 242 members of a chorus and a day and
a half to learn 10 new songs. As nerve-wracking as it may seem, Karianne tends to
stay pretty chill about her auditions, though she was in shock about actually making
it to the next round of the competition.
How does she do it? Karianne’s musical career can probably pinpoint a
beginning at birth, being the daughter of a music teacher. “I have an unfair advantage because I have a certified music teacher to go to anytime at all,” says
Karianne, “but it’s relaxing to know I have extra help.” But her relation to a music
teacher can also put a little pressure on her. “If a parent is good at something, everyone expects the children to be good at it too. I feel like it’s almost expected of me
to be musically inclined.” Karianne also takes private lessons (Cont. on pg. 3)

While most people singing onstage think of
the best ways to get offstage, Karianne thinks of certain people and memories, depending on the song
she’s singing. She also wears rings that say “hope”
and “faith.” Though you can’t expect to see her on
American Idol, (“I don’t think I have what they’re looking for”), you can definitely expect to see her making
a mark in the music industry sometime in the future.

Science PSSAs what a total drag as if there weren’t already too many tests. This is a typical complaint from sophomores
and juniors around the school. Science PSSA testing took place
on April 30th, last Wednesday. Will they count next year for this
year’s sophomores and if they do how could students possibly
cover the entire scientific world?
Mrs. Bierly of the science department had plenty to say
about the PSSAs and how they would affect students. Mrs. Bierly
also mentioned that a specific science curriculum may be set up in
an attempt to standardize all science taught K-12.
Due to the No Child Left Behind program all students by
2014 will be required to pass all PSSAs (possibly including the
Science exam) with at least a proficient grade or better. This could
prove serious problems due to lack of concern on behalf of our
student body.
When asked about the problem of our students not taking
the test seriously Mrs. Bierly said, “It has to count for something
before students will recognize the importance of the PSSA.”
According to Skyler Sojka (11) Mrs. Bierly is right. Skyler
says he would take the test seriously and try if it counted towards
something. However this year’s tests didn’t count and Skyler’s
voice seems to be a general opinion “They sucked, they were just
bad. Waste of time, there is no soft way to put it, it was a test, and
it sucked.”
Jess Williams (11) may have pointed out the real reason why students were unable to take the test seriously. “Problem was they
told us it didn’t count, so instead we all drew Pokémon.”
For those unfamiliar with the term Pokémon was actually
an animated show played on WB about little creatures that do battle.
After all the fights and all the controversy will these difficult
Science PSSAs be counted towards next year’s juniors? Chances
aren’t looking good for students looking to avoid another test.
Bulldog News Corner
By Lily O’Shaughnessy
This month, the Bulldog
News has a very big project
ahead of them. The votes are in
and the cameras are ready to roll.
With many of the staffers also
helping with the Senior Video, the
Bulldog staff is a little strained. Once again, producer
Jeffery Dincher gave the Paw Print the low down on
the last episode of the senior crew and the last episode the 2007-2008 school year.
“This episode is going to feature Spring Activities, Relay for Life, Prom, Senior Advice to the
Underclassmen and some Behind the Scenes of
Bulldog News,” Jeff spilled. Many of the staffers realize that it’s their last episode, but Jeff was willing to
give his thoughts on the matter. “Personally, it’s depressing. I’ll miss working with Seth Bowman the
most because of his personality. I’m also going to
miss the fact that I have a lot of ideas brewing that
will possibly never be shared with anyone from the
school, unless I make a website. I’ll most likely make
them for myself.
“The two things I’m going to probably miss
the most are being involved in such a big project like
this, and when we as a crew feel that the episode we
have just released is amazing and people come up to
us and give us compliments on it.”
Any last words on Bulldog News? “I have a
personal package that I’m contemplating on releasing, but I won’t go in to details about it. I wish the underclass who takes over Bulldog next year the best
of luck,” he said.
Senior Memory Video
By Lily O’Shaughnessy
Seniors, it’s time to hand in those photos
of us when we were in elementary school, and maybe even kindergarten up to our senior year. DVD Yearbook staff member Codi
Costa and a few Bulldog News members are taking all of the photos and placing them into a “slideshow” type video, accompanied
by interviews with students from the senior class. Paw Print talked
to Codi and Jeff Dincher to get the scoop on the video.

Senior Video (Cont. from pg. 3)
“I scanned and uploaded all of the photos that came
in. It took a lot of time,” commented Costa on the subject. “At
first I was a little overwhelmed and I got angry, but it’s done.”
Jeff added, “Codi pretty much put everything together, photo wise, and gave it over to us. We’ll definitely
have some senior interviews and we will make sure that
there are limited student repeats.”
“I hope we won’t make the mistake of playing the
video over the media center because of the constant technical difficulties. Personally I think it’s a waste of money,” said
Jeff.
Plans are to broadcast the senior video on the last
day of school, and a reminder to those underclassmen who
think they can sneak in to the auditorium when it’s being
shown: Don’t. You’ll have your turn soon enough.
Talent Show a Hit
By Kaylyn Yost
The turnout at the 2008 talent show may
have been less than impressive, but the performers let the
audience leave satisfied. The show started with our very
own high school dance team performing to Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous”.
A highlight of the show was the percussion section
doing a piece from stop. Another high point was Curtis Eckard, (10) singing and playing “First day of my life” by Bright
Eyes, and Josh Hines, (10) singing his own rendition of
John Mayer’s “How much it hurts”.
The show concluded with a Blue Grass band performing a few songs. Overall the performances were outstanding. A big thanks to the drama club for making the
show possible, and to the performers that had the guts to
show everyone their talent!

Need Money? Get a Summer Job
By Kirsten Morse
As the school year ends and the summer begins,
many students find themselves looking
for summer jobs. Farms start hiring detasselers, parents start hiring sitters, and
pools hire life guards. Summer jobs seem
to help make the time go by and vacation
money is always good to have.
When looking for a job, keep a
few things in mind: 1) Make sure it is
something that you are not wanting to quit
after one day on the job; 2) Make sure it
is something that you are interested in
and semi good at; and 3) Make sure that you get good
money out of it. HA well that’s not the most important thing
but it sure is high on my pro/con list.
Several students shared their summer work plans.
Maybe you’ll see them out and about as well.

Female Athlete of the Month for May is Chelsea
Baier. She has participated track since her 7th grade
year.
Chelsea has thrown for track for 3years. Her
best accomplishment was in her junior year. She threw
a 107’ in the Javelin and placed 3rd at districts.
“I haven’t decided if I am going to do track in
college, but I think it would be a great challenge,” Baier
said. “My goal for the future is to attend college and
graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science.”
In 9th grade, Chelsea did swimming for the
school. She also has done out-of-school softball as
well.
“I am thankful to be named Athlete of the
Month,” Baier said. “I feel recognized because people
believe I work hard enough at my sport to be recognized.”
Josh Wrench
By Lily O’Shaughnessy
The May male Athlete of the Month is senior, Joshua
Wrench. Josh participates on the varsity baseball team, as
the starting catcher for all teams. Josh has participated in four
years of high school baseball, 10 years of Little League baseball, American Legion baseball and will continue to play baseball at Lycoming College in the upcoming year.
Josh has received many awards for participating in
this sport. “I’ve won for the District 4 champions back in 2006,
the SVL League champs for the high school last year, the
District 12 champion team for the Senior League in 2007, and
the region champion team for American Legion in 2007,” said
Wrench.
Some of Josh’s out of school activities are hunting,
fishing, camping, taking care of his horses, restoration of old
machinery, working with firearms, and weight lifting. When
asked how it feels to be Athlete of the Month Josh replied, “It
feels great to be given the honor of Athlete of the Month, but I
think the whole baseball team is deserving of this award because of all the all-around team effort that makes us successful.”

me, you’ve probably realized if you want 2 apple
sauces (or any good fruit for that matter), you have to purchase it additionally. But are you aware when you pay for a
lunch you are suppose to get your choice of 2 fruits or vegetables ,or a combination of both? It doesn’t matter if it’s two
of the same fruits you want—you paid once, you should be
able to get it.
The response of Ben Marzo, food service director,
to the problem was, “If it’s in the school lunch guidelines, I
can’t go against it.” But don’t try to tell me it’s in some policy
that we can’t duplicate a fruit when, if it’s pears or pineapples, the staff has no problem letting us get two of them.
Evidently they’re the cheap fruits. Our lunch staff may say
it’s because they’re in short supply, and that may be accurate, but come on! If it happens every time, wouldn’t you
think they’d order more? Although the company contracted
to ensure our cafeteria sells healthy food would like us to
believe it’s all in the best interest of the students, and that
they want us to be purchasing nutritional choices and such,
that’s bogus.
We can buy 10 bags of chips if we want, or an
unlimited number of ice creams — but when it comes to
healthy choices, we pay the price. But if we put it together, it
makes sense. They make a lot more money from kids buying unhealthy products than they would fruit. Fruit costs
more and when they buy chips in bulk, they make a considerable amount more of money. Marzo, who works for the
Nutrition Group, commented, “I want kids to buy as much
[food] as they can; obviously that’s what I’m in the business
for.” Sounds to me like the company is either promoting obesity or money hungry.
Peaches, peaches, get your peaches…but only if
you’ve got an early lunch. Why are we in short supply of the
much loved frozen peaches!? I got the scoop from Marzo.
First, the company doesn’t even buy the peaches. They’re
donated. So when they run out, that’s all they’ve got. But
don’t you think if they donated the extra money the company
is making should go to buy more frozen peaches for the kids
that unfortunately have a later lunch? Of course not. Remember, fruit is expensive, and that wouldn’t be right making the company actually use some of the money they’re
making on us to provide us with a wholesome meal. And if
you’re in 7th period lunch, you aren’t even guaranteed that.
On Chicken Patty Tuesday April 22nd, the last 30 students
or so didn’t have a choice. They ran out of everything but
chicken patty and if they didn’t like it...too bad for them,
huh? Money can only do so much, I guess. I’m sure the
company figures we’ll deal with what they give us since
we’re supposed to help plan the meal according to the wellness plan. It states “students will be an active part of menu
planning through regularly scheduled meetings and taste
testing.” Um, is it just me or did our student body somehow
miss-out on that opportunity?
Enough with my money complaints. I’ll just accept
that the world is greedy and when you’ve got no money of
your own, you take it from the easiest source: the kids. But
we are giving you the money you ask, and we just want a
full meal that follows the rules. On Tuesday May 6th, students found mold in their yummy sour cream. Mhmm good!
But the staff said not all containers were contaminated, so
they didn’t throw them all out. It was kind of like the luck of
the draw, you know?
At least on the same day when some students in 4th
period lunch got outdated milk cartons, it was their own stupidity for not checking the dates. We know it would take
SOOO long for our
staff to check themselves, and it’s such
a strenuous job; I
wouldn’t want to
make them work. As

them and press approximately 3 buttons per person. I can see how that can be so tough and
cause them to flip out. That happened to me on May 7th
when I was short a quarter on my debit card. But, I would
have known that if the lunch ladies would have told me the

That’s okay; the lady talked

because she is half deaf doesn’t mean everyone else is.
I just want a fair meal. I’m a big
peaches fan, obviously, and I’d like my
money to go to good use and good service. I’m not satisfied and these are just
my complaints, we all have a list of our
own. So what do you say we pull out a
copy of the wellness policy and our
schools lunch policy and start giving us
what we pay for…thanks!

Steph Says...

This column is supposed to be
my reflections or some sort of
advice I could give you. I’ll do
my best.
I’ve been on Paw Print, more or
less, for three years. In ninth grade I took the introductory
course and in 10th I freelanced a couple stories, one which
was published in the Sun-Gazette. It wasn’t until 11th that I
was actually a part of the staff. Senior year I became Chief
Editor of the school paper. Looking back, I am grateful for
my experience on the Paw Print. I’ve learned a lot about
various writing techniques and how to interview strangers.
My first interview in 9th was with Mrs. Thomas and it
was in reference to a story about the drink machines. I
know, super exciting but I was scared out of my mind to interview the principal. However, I found that I was very comfortable with interviewing people and now, in my senior year,
have interviewed Mrs. Thomas on several more occasions.
I do not want to delve more into my role on the Paw
Print. What I do want to address is something more relevant
to all students. Senior year.
Senior year is going to be different from every other
year of schooling you, as underclassmen, have experienced
so far. Everything changes. I will try to picture this for you.
Think of the biggest roller coaster you have ever ridden or
wouldn’t ride. That is senior year. You are the person in the
first set of seats. Enjoy.
I think as a senior you find out more about your fellow classmen and who you will all be as adults, out in the
“real world.” Everyone through high school is so obsessed
with being popular and pleasing other people that they forget who they are, on the inside.
After senior year, it’s just you. Maybe you’ll keep
around a few of your closest friends but the people you grew
up with are gone, chasing their own dreams, having children, and living life.
Honestly, I am half ready to get out into the real
world and leave all the high school drama behind but the
other half of me wants to stay here forever. The high school
experience is something you suffer through at times but
you’ll look back and miss it. It’s also one thing that isn’t supposed to last. Take what you can from this school (don’t
take that as a permission to steal, it’s metaphorical). Education is power.
Trying to avoid sounding corny on all possible levels, believe in you. Sometimes as teenagers becoming
adults we forget who we are and what we are trying to accomplish. Never give up on yourself. Not everyone is the
most athletic or the most intelligent, but you can bring something else to this school and this world that no one else can.
I can’t tell you what that is; you have to find it out for yourself. We all do.
I don’t know what I am supposed to try and tell you
with this column. Be your own person? Don’t drink and
drive? Be responsible adults?
I know that 99.9 % of the people who read this won’t
care. I don’t need that percentile to. If I can reach point one
percent of you and make a difference, then it’s a start.
The question is: what difference will you make?

And you know what? If it gets the job done, I’ll do it. Apparently I remind people of Amanda from that MTV show The
Paper. I hear she’s a real *****, so I guess I see the resemblance.
I’d be lying if I said this year wasn’t a complete roller
coaster. I started off the year crying in a bathroom stall [long
story], and it’ll probably end that way too. I went a long way
during my stint in journalism. Freshman year I was in Intro—
I wrote bad stories, had horrible grammar, and got whipped
into shape by Mr. Dauberman. My sophomore year I decided to take a break from writing—I’ve been doing it in various ways all my life [I’ve got published poetry. Yeah, I rock it
like that.], and I wanted to see how I fared without it. In
short, it sucked—I made sure to take journalism again my
junior year. I discovered that I LOVED writing opinion
pieces, hated writing news stories, and that watching Dance
Drier play “Cat Cannonball” made any day instantly better.
Flash forward to this year—my final [thank God]
year at JS. I’m Opinions Editor now, which rocks because I
like to be able to boss people around. Maybe that’s not exactly a desirable talent, but trust me; it comes in handy when
you’re helping run a newspaper. I started drawing cartoons
a few weeks into this year, and people seemed to like them,
so we decided to put them in the paper. Sorry if most of
them weren’t funny—the really good ones were definitely not
going to get through administration—in fact, several of the
ones that I did put in the paper almost didn’t make it
through! I really didn’t think “Tonya” would cause a minicontroversy, but apparently it did. Then the lunch ladies got
mad at my ranch dressing comic. If you were wondering
about the “THIS COMIC HAS BEEN CENSORED BY JS
HIGH SCHOOL” one, well…there ya go. I value freedom of
speech a lot. That’s what journalism is all about—for me, at
least.
Megan and I had a lot of fun picking apart everything we did wrong after an issue came out, even if we annoyed people with it. Whatever, I don’t think we really cared.
We did a lot of stuff wrong this year, so I hope the younger
kids in the class took notes so they can make it better next
year. I really want to see some good stuff come out of the
paper after we leave, and hopefully see some people jump
up and take initiative like a lot of people did this year. Steph,
Megan, and I are the core. THE CORE! I’ve taken to yelling
that, and I’m not sure if anyone else gets it, but whatever.
In short—I love writing for a newspaper, and I can’t
wait to do it for a real one.
Ze End of Ze World
By Lily O’Shaughnessy
At the beginning of your freshman year you constantly say to yourself, “I can’t wait
to be a senior.” Well now, that time has finally come for us, as seniors, this is the year we
walk, and receive our diplomas. I mean, we’ve been waiting for this forever.
My time has finally come, and to be honest.. I’m not ready to leave. There’s so
many things that I’m going to miss. From seeing everyone in the halls, to my underclass
friends, my favorite teachers, yearbook, and journalism are the things that I’m going to
miss most.
Being a part of the yearbook, and the Paw Print has opened my eyes to new
things. I’m proud of the things I have done in both of those classes, from helping publish a few yearbooks and working on
DVD Yearbook last year, to the many stories I was able to write in journalism. I’m hoping both of those accomplishments
can help me in the future as a career and in college.
I know there isn’t much here, but to the underclassmen, keep your heads up. You’ll eventually be here in my
shoes. Keep your best friends close. And whatever you do, never sweat the small stuff, you’ll make it.

Megan’s Retiring
By Megan Frank
"I'm leaving on a jet plane; I
don't know when I'll be back
again..." No, not really, but it is
time for me to move on. I'm
graduating and even though I've
only been on the newspaper
staff for a year, it feels sort of strange to have to move over
and let someone else take the position of news editor.
I've already stated it before, but it's only been a
year, and a short year at that. On the third day of school, we
sat around and discussed who would be what as far as editors. Mrs. Riggle announced the editors of the entire paper
and then moved on to ask "Who would like to be news editor?" No one raised their hand, so she skipped it and went
on. After assigning each other position, still no one wanted
to be news editor, so I raised my hand. Congratulations,
Megan, you're news editor!
I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I
thought I would write stories, manage a section of layout,
and get to boss people around, but it became so much more
than that. It's odd to think about, but I wonder if I never
raised my hand that day would I have ever felt so intense
about creating a newspaper. By working on the newspaper
at school, I realized that this is what I want to do with my life.
I'm going to college at Lycoming and majoring in Communications and English, with that I plan to work for a magazine,
both writing and working with layout.
E
I don't really know if it sounds cheesy, but being on
the newspaper taught me a lot. I'd look back on everything
as a learning experience. Not only did I learn to be a better
writer and how to make a decent layout, but I tested my patience, became closer to new people over something we
took way too seriously, and so many other things. I learned
so many new things and I was way too into it. My friends
who weren't on the newspaper most likely got tired of me
talking about it. An example of this would be when Shana
and I would pick apart an issue that was already out and
everyone would hear us and be like, "It's already out and
you guys can't change it now." We flipped out over the
smallest things. I feel so dumb sometimes when I look back
on it, but I think to myself, if no one else was taking it seriously, at least I was.
I hope that whoever takes my place next year takes
it just as seriously as I did. I don't mean you can't have fun,
because I had a lot of fun. Maybe they'll learn as much as I
did. I don't know what's going to happen for the Paw Print or
for my future as a journalist. Hopefully there are good things
in store for both.
So I leave you with that. I'll end it by thanking Mrs.
Riggle and all of my friends, both those on the Paw Print
staff and those not, for putting up with my complaining about
the newspaper, because really I was all talk and deep down
I loved every minute of it, and I'd like to thank those you in
second period journalism who never cared for me, you guys
never really made it that difficult.
Advice to the Younger Crowd
By Skyler Wool
To all of
those who have time
yet here at Jersey
Shore High school, I
can only say that do
not waste your time
here. The things you
will learn and the effort you put forth will
determine how easy the rest of your life
will be. Do not squander your opportunities because looking back and wishing you could have done some things
differently is the worst thing. You only
get one shot at life and despite the issues one may have with any number of
things here at Jersey Shore, life is not
so much being dealt a good hand as it
is playing the hand you are dealt to the
best of your ability.
Do not shun school activities
whether it be sports or other activities.
These things are your opportunity to
gain the respect and recognition we all
desire. I myself have found some
measure of these things in my football
career here at JS and also in my weight
room achievements. This brings me to
one other issue I would like to address
to all of you who would care to listen to
a tired old senior like me. The weight
room facility we now have here at Jersey Shore is a blessing, we have been
fortunate beyond measure to have
been gifted with such a facility and the
gains and self improvement you can
create in yourself there are unlimited.
Respect our gift and use it for all it’s
worth. Farewell to you all and I hope
you all enjoy your time here as much as
I did and carry with you the numerous
life lessons learned here at Jersey
Shore.

Elvis has Left the Building
By Jimmy Smith
The school year is at a
close, and with that comes the
beginning of a new life for all of
the seniors in the high school.
It may seem sad that we need
to part ways, but true friends
will never be that far from you. I guess I am supposed to give all you underclassmen advice on your
future, but I really don’t know what to tell you.
The best advice I can give you is try to do
your best. I am not just saying for your academics
or sports, but be the best friend, the best student,
and the best person that you can be. It is easy to
blow people off because they are “less cool” then
you, but at the end of the day, you’re just being superficial. True friendship doesn’t know how much
money a person makes, or how their hair looks. It
is something bigger, and more important than that.
I know everything I just said sounds far too clichéd, but as you look back on your years in high
school, do you want to remember yourself being the
kid who dressed in a nice pair of Puma shoes? Or
do you want to look back at all the people you’ve
met, and think of all the great times you spent with
them. So, don’t hang out with people just because
they dress nice, or because they have a cool
house. I don’t want to preach, but when you look
back, just make sure you think that you made the
right choices.
Time goes by fast, and memories are all that
remain. Just make sure to keep your true friends
close to you in hard times and in great times. And
don’t be afraid to talk to people, even if they are
strangers. If the person shoots a look like “why are
you talking to me”, don’t get mad, be grateful.
Grateful because they just saved you so much time
from having to figure out that they are complete
jerks.
This world is full of posers and clowns so don’t
be a person who puts other people off just so you
can maintain an image. Would you be content
knowing that you may have looked cool to your
niche group because you blew someone off? Just
think about this, if the only thing you have in common with your “friends” is that you all shop at Aero-
postale or Hot Topic, then do you really believe
that you will remain friends when you are out in the
real world? Probably not.
That’s why it is so important to give people
a chance, and don’t judge someone because they
dress like a prep, or they look like an “emo”. You
have always been told not to judge a book by its
cover, so just make sure to follow that old adage,
because styles and circumstances change, just
make sure your friends don’t. A friend isn’t someone who will change with the passage of new styles
or trends. Make sure you are original, and don’t try
to impress people who don’t really matter. Don’t
try to conform to a group. Sure it is great to have a
posse of friends, but don’t limit yourself to hanging
out with a certain group of people. Try everything;
don’t be afraid to try something that you aren’t experienced at. At the end of the day, when you are
looking back, you will be happy that you gave everything a shot. Give everything a chance, and don’t
be afraid if it isn’t your thing or if you suck at it.
What does it matter?
I just preached entirely more than I planned
before I wrote this. So, I will leave you with a couple tips to get through high school. Make sure you
challenge yourself; don’t just coast. I know that I
wasted a lot of time in classes that I thought I
would not use, just because I felt like slacking in
the class. Also, don’t act like you have it all figured out. Chances are there is someone with a different perspective then you have. Make sure to
listen to what they have to say. Even if you disagree, just listen to their thoughts on everything.
Also, spend as much time with your friends
and family as you possibly can. You never know
what the future will hold, but I can tell you that it
would be terrible to know that you could have spent
more time with someone.
Lastly, just love life. Sure everyone can
have a bad day, or even a bad year, but you can’t
let it keep you down. Just soldier on and keep everyone important close and things will be okay. If
not then at least you will go out with a smile on
your face. So my final words as a senior and a
Paw Print writer will be a quote. “Don’t cry because it’s over; Smile because it happened.”

Finding Out Who I Am
By Kirsten Morse
High school, such
an important part of your
life, it helps decide your future and makes you regret
part of your past. This
school year has helped me
figure out exactly who I am.
I wear what I want not caring what people think and I
work as hard as I can to reach my goals in life. I decided to
attend LHU for special education and to even live on campus. Am I going to like it? Maybe, maybe not, but that will be
later decided.
To be honest I really never even thought of taking
journalism, but Evan convinced me so here I am … writing
my stories, getting criticized about my opinions and getting
yelled at by big mouthed people.
But let’s rewind back to how I really got where I am.
So there I was filling out my course selection sheet for my
big senior year. Not knowing what classes I wanted to take,
Evan persuades me that having journalism together would
be fun. HA what was he thinking? Just kidding. It actually
wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be, besides the moments
that I got embarrassed to say something not wanting to get
made fun of by Evan, but what else was new that’s just me.
I’ve always loved to write but hated having people
read it, worried about being criticized. So why did I take journalism if that’s how I was? I was ready to open up and break
out of my shell just to prove to people that I could do it. The
year actually went extremely well and I loved every minute
of it.
I have been waiting 12 years to be a senior, and
now that it’s here I’m not so sure that I’m ready for this chapter of my life to be over. I’m not ready to tell my friends
good-bye or to leave my mom who has cared and taken
care of me my whole life. It hasn’t really hit me, until I started
writing this column that I will be graduating in less than a
month and most of my classmates I may never see again.
So, on that note I would like to tell my senior class: “Good
luck in everything that you do and it’s been fun while it has
lasted.” To my underclassman friends: “Keep working hard
and don’t give up or get frustrated, don’t take your high
school days for granted because before you know it you will
be out of here and be regretting things you did do and
should’ve done.”
This would be where all the cool kids would put a
sweet quote or write a touching last sentence that you will
remember until the day that you die, but I guess that I’m not
that cool. I’m just going to leave it at “peace out.”

me. Being a senior really does have its perks. You find out that Mrs. Thomas, and Mr. Jean are actually pretty alright, Mrs. Drammissi may let it slide if you are missing the debit, Mrs. Pond
understands that your alarm clock just wasn’t enough to get
you out of bed in the morning and most teachers know that
you truly were sick and need those extra days to make up

This year was everything I hoped it would be. I remember my freshman year being friends with a majority of
the seniors and not being able to wait until it was my turn to
finally graduate. I am sure that it was just like all the underclassman now; it’s a bittersweet feeling knowing that soon
you will be a senior. I don’t mean bitter because you are
going to graduate I mean bitter because although you are a
senior you still have nine months of too much work and not
enough play sort of thing. My advice to anyone who is hat-
ing high school more than anything is become close with
your teachers; I promise it will help you get through the day.
Plus when you start skipping school towards the end of the
year your grade will not suffer nearly as much as bubba who
has slept the whole year.
Another thing that could help you out, avoid the
drama, seriously, avoid it. I hate to say this but stick to your
school work make it through the seven hours (that sometimes does indeed seem wasted) and then do whatever you
want. I promise, come senior year, you won’t care what you
are wearing or what the person sitting beside you is, and it’s
actually okay. I mean don’t let yourself go or anything
brown and black will never match, but it’s okay for your hair
to be in a bun and for the guys to get out the sweat pants.

you are done! Make the best of your high school days, I do
not believe they are the best days of your life, but it is true
that you have to be here, and although it sucks, it is worth it
in the end.
“You have four years to be irresponsible here. Relax. Work is for people with jobs. You'll never remember
class time, but you'll remember time you wasted hanging out
with your friends. So, stay out late. Go out on a Tuesday
with your friends when you have a paper due Wednesday.
Spend money you don't have. Drink 'til sunrise. The work
never ends, but school does..." –Tom Petty
Seniors: You’ve gotta see these movies!
Megan’s Pick- “The Breakfast Club” – The
Breakfast Club is a movie essential to all
graduating seniors because it is all about
cliques coming together and enjoying day
long detention. This movie just goes to
show that a jock, a metalhead, a weirdo, a
princess, and a nerd can all get along. Everyone should watch this movie because it
just goes to show that you can end up being friends with anyone, no matter who
they are, and no matter where you are.
Lily’s Pick- “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” – I
feel this movie is essential to any graduat-
ing senior, because it’s about skipping
school. I mean, who doesn’t want to skip
school? The best thing about this movie is
that the kid’s smart, really smart. Recordings, and dummies stop his parents
and sister from actually advancing into his
room to see that he’s really not there. He
knows how to deceive his mom, his sister,
and the school principal, who for some
reason has it out for Bueller (Matthew
Broderick). He talks his friends into joining
him on his adventure and even convinces
his friend to “borrow” his dads Ferrari.
While Ferris’ is out joy riding, his sister is
plotting against him. Except for the
smashed Ferrari, they never get caught.
Isn’t that what we all dream about?
Shana’s Pick- “Rocky Horror Picture Show”
– Rocky Horror is a movie that you must
witness at least once in your life. I don’t
care if you don’t like musicals or not, you
still need to see it. Not only is the movie a
riot, many people get so obsessed with the
movie that they attend events where the
movie is acted out live, and the audience
gets to participate. Rocky Horror isn’t just a
Continued on page 18
Page 18
movie—it’s an entire experience. You’re
probably going to find that you don’t relate
to the movie at all—you’re not a “sweet
transvestite”, and you’re probably not an
alien or a robot wearing gold spanky pants.
It doesn’t matter, ‘cuz you’ll be doing the
Time Warp allllllll night long anyway.
Jimmy’s Pick-“Fight Club” The first rule of
Fight Club is “you do not talk about Fight
Club.” This is one of my favorite quotes
from the movie, because it sums up the
entire style of the film. I think everyone
needs to see this movie, because it is so
much more than just two guys fighting.
The movie shows how society is being far
too consumerist and impersonal, and a
once white-collar worker gets fed up with
the “condo life”. The protagonist’s name
never is revealed, but the credits refer to
him as Jack. Jack (Edward Norton) lived a
life where he revolved around his work in
the city and had nothing else to do. Day in
and day out he goes to work for really no
reason, and he becomes just another brick
in the wall. This is until he meets a man
named Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). I don’t
want to tell you too much else, because I
do not want to ruin the stellar plot. This
brief description does not do it justice,
since the film is great all around. The
cinematography of the film is second to
none, since great themes make their appearance with just the simple shot of a
refrigerator can be symbolic because it
reflects the narrator’s life being “a fridge full
of condiments.” And for all you Matrix fans
out there, Fight Club is filmed with the
same type of “green washed out” style that
the Matrix used. I really don’t know what
else to say in regards to Fight Club, just
take my advice and watch Jack’s transgression into a creature that is not dominated by the corporations or the “man”,
instead he is in control for once in his life,
and he does that by basically destroying
his life. Tyler Durden said it best, “Only
after we lose everything, are we free to do
anything.” Make sure to see this movie.
Morgan’s Pick- “Fear and Loathing in Las
Vegas” I believe that everyone needs to
see this movie twice. (Johnny Depp) The
main character journalist Raoul Duke and
his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Del Toro) go to Las
OPINIONS
Vegas to cover a motorcycle race in 1971.
Raoul is completely messed up on drugs
with Dr.Gonzo who is even more messed
up on drugs. While they are there they are
set out to find the American Dream with the
assistants of illegal drugs. They commit
acts of fraud, and drive the citizens of Las
Vegas absolutely crazy. The movie is a
version of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel, the
crazy search for the American Dream. It’s
filled with police, reporters, gamblers, racers, hitchhikers, hookers and a convertible.
It really is a funny movie to watch, if you
can follow along.
teachers. Throughout the course of the
movie, Juno is faced with hard decisions,
like whether or not to have an abortion, and
discovers that not even the adults have a
secure plan for life. Realizing that she is
not prepared to take care of a child, she
looks for an adult couple who will be good
parents. Right next to the parrot in the
Pennysaver, she finds Vanessa and Mark
Loring. Juno is a must see for students
who love a good laugh but in all seriousness, is a movie that shows what it takes
for one girl to do what she thinks is the
right thing.
Kirsten’s Pick- “Titanic” This movie is a
must see with a box of tissues at your side.
It has to be one of the best true story movies I have ever watched and I can never
get enough of it. Leonardo DiCaprio definitely hit it home with this movie. You
laugh, you cry, you may even start singing
the Celion Deon song “The Heart Will Go
On.” Rose (Kate Winslet) is an upper class
girl going to Philadelphia with her fiancé
and family, whereas Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a poor young man that wins the
tickets to go on the ship in a card game
minutes before it leaves the harbor. Meeting each other was fate and falling in love
was unexpected, but it happened. The
“unsinkable ship” hits an unspotted iceberg
two days after departure and within hours,
the boat is laying at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The movie is told by Rose at
an older age, recalling the tragic day. The
movie is a tear jerker and makes you want
to live everyday to its fullest.
Katie’s Pick- “Forrest Gump” – Every single
graduating senior must see Forrest Gump.
Tom Hanks does a phenomenal job portraying a naïve and placid man with an IQ
of 75 who doesn’t always understand what
is going on around him. This movie
touches all aspects of the senses – it is
sentimental, funny, romantic, and cultural.
Not to mention the fact that it has some of
the best quotes of all time, including
“Momma always said life was like a box of
chocolates, ya never know what you’re
gonna get” and “run, Forrest, run!” This
was one of my all time favorite films and I
can practically quote every line. It made me
laugh, cry, get mad, and feel good. So if
you haven’t already, follow Forrest on his
epic journey through life as he meets famous figures, influences pop-culture
(phrases like “s*it happens” and symbols
like the smiley face), and experiences firsthand historic events of which he doesn’t
even realize the significance. Forrest
Gump is an amazing movie and it was
filmed in the best city in the world…
Savannah, Georgia.
Steph’s Pick – “Juno” “This is one doodle
that can't be un-did, home skillet.” Every
teenager should watch the film Juno at
least once before high school graduation.
Not only is it hilarious, it addresses several
issues which are relevant to every student.
After Juno finds out her “egg-o is prego”
she is thrown into a situation that she is not
ready for. She’s having a baby and doesn’t
know what she should do. Putting aside all
the jokes and innuendos, Juno is actually a
story about a sixteen year old who gets
pregnant and tries to do the right thing with
helpful support from her father, stepmother
Bren, and her best friend, who crushes on
Skyler’s Pick- “The Edge” and amazing
film. This movie is about a rich business
man (Anthony Hopkins) who goes to
Alaska with his younger wife for a photo
shoot. While on a sightseeing plane ride
the plane crashes leaving Anthony and one
companion ( His wife’s photographer )
randed. The pair must strive to survive in
the harsh Alaskan wilderness while simultaneously being stalked by a man eating
Grizzly bear.
