AWARD WINNING ALPACAS
Electra of Crystal Springs was born during an electrical storm and is the
pride of our farm. Both of her parents are champions and she has already
started showing the same qualities. She won first place and Reserve
Champion (behind the same yearling) at both the 2009 Sunshine State
Expo and the 2009 Southern Select…all at just 7 months old! She is a
supreme example of the fleece we should be striving for with our Suris.

~A Beautiful Story~
Did I See A Tear?
I just had a talk with Paola. Periodically she and I have a conversation. Many of you know Paola. She has been
with me about 12 years and has always been one of my favorites.
Paola has always been the “mother” of her group. All the other alpacas seem to follow her when she moves from the
hay pile to the poop pile to the water bowl. Even today at 20 years of age, she is their leader.
I especially remember Paola the day I lost Laura Lee. This was back before I found Dr. Doug Davenport to be my
veterinarian when I moved my alpacas from Texas to Florida. Laura Lee went down and I couldn’t find a vet to come
look at her. After a few phone calls to many vets, Dr. Doug said he didn’t know anything about alpacas but was
willing to learn (and he certainly has).
Laura Lee was out in the pasture under a big oak tree by a huge mound of dirt when we lost her. Paola stayed by her
side. She seemed to know that Laura Lee was in trouble. After Laura Lee stopped breathing Paola softly put her head
down on Laura Lee’s head as if she was saying a prayer. I’m not sure, did I see a tear in her eye?
After a little while Paola walked away and the rest of the alpacas wandered over to Laura Lee, one at a time,
appearing to want to say their last words to her. After the “viewing” the rest of the ladies along with their crias lined
up next to each other and Paola stood up on top of the dirt mound. All eyes were on her as she looked down at them
as if she were saying Laura Lee’s Eulogy. All the girls seemingly nodded in agreement with everything Paola said.
When Paola came down from the mound she walked over to Laura Lee under the big oak tree followed by the rest of
the ladies, each one bowing their heads as they walked by her, as if to pay her their last respects. I remember one of
the crias jumping during the “service” and with a silent sideways glance from Paola, the youngster quietly got back in
line next to his mother.
Did I imagine this solemn service? Maybe…but I think that our alpacas know and understand much more than we
think they do. We need to take more time to watch them and listen to what they are telling us.

~Sarah Standing~
First standing and taking steps - day 4 of life. A wonderful sight to us and
gives great hope! Why? Fruzane Noir's first girl for Griffonwood 5 weeks and 3
days early: possible tips for survival Why? Who knows but surprises come with this
heat and humidity this year!!
She was found on the ground, early morning, this early with no breaths
appearing at first, very cold to the touch. Bill called to the house with regrets of
losing a premature baby and then he yelled "get a bag ready, warm water in the

began although quite sporatic. Bagged with the open end up around her neck in

warm water, we quickly started the oxygen. Her mouth opened for another 16
minutes while you could see the oxygen entering her little 10 lb. body. Then quietly
she seemed to breathe easier. 20 minutes and taken out for temperature checks,
still nothing registering!
Back in the bag, in redone warm water, and talking gently to her. 20
minutes later finally we were being able to agree she is starting to thaw out! Redo,
20 minutes later she is almost normal. She is rubbery eared, but the cotton in a
tampon taped in her ears pulls the ears around where they might "cook" a little
longer. She starts to move around and is breathing so much easier. We agree
A whole 19.7 lbs. and she should have
to take her back to her mother. Shanta with 4 males born is thrilled to hear that she

has her first daughter, a beautiful little brown girl. Sarah one of our agisting owners
was thrilled to get to help hold her in the sink and move her to the barn. Noir's
Sarah seems like an appropriate name.
*Breeding Tips*
When a body is not warm enough the organs etc. don't work right
either!! She has a good sucking reflex, Praise God for that, and we milked
mom, added vitamin D milk, with karo syrup and warmed that up. She is
drinking. We did choose to call the vet for plasma for hopefully a boost.
Every two ounces for a few days we continue. This picture was a thrill. We
are hopeful and added some ADE to her milk. Today, day 5, she is taking
more steps, trying to drink from mom and we will supplement her with

~Heat Induced Premies~
We are adjusting our breeding season at Lake Liaho Farm because of the heat wave that affected Central Florida this year
in October. Three of our dams were bred in late November or early December of 2008, and had due dates in November of
this year. Two of them gave birth to premature cria in October. Our first preemie was born on October 4, four weeks
ahead of her due date. My husband Steve went out to begin the afternoon chores and found a little black bundle huddled
on the ground with an anxious mother standing and humming nearby. It was a beautiful true black female that was barely
breathing and unable even to hold up her head. Steve immediately called me out to the pasture and we began work to try
and save this precious new life. Fortunately after a plasma transfusion and three days of round the clock feeding with a
syringe this little girl turned the corner and began nursing steadily on her dam and gaining every day. She is now a very
energetic cria weighing over 20 pounds, and we have every reason to expect that she will reach a healthy adulthood.
Our second preemie was born on October 10. Idlewyld, one of our maiden moms gave birth three weeks early to
a bay black male weighing only ten pounds. This little guy was a little further along than Shadow was, so he progressed a
little sooner. By the second day he was up on his feet and nursing from mom. He is still living, but not gaining quite as
steadily as the female.
We are going to hold off our breeding schedule this year to begin February 1. Both of these premature cria were
heat induced labors. Even though it looks like they will survive, dealing with premature births is not an experience that I
want to repeat again next year. I learned a lot this year by nursing these two little ones to health. They will always be
special to me since I spent so many hours nurturing them and encouraging them to live. However – I’ll be even more
thrilled to see our next cria standing by its mom and nursing away within an hour or two of its birth!
