Contests to be held during Oktoberfest
Black River Falls, WI – Join the fun and enter a
contest during the Black River Area Oktoberfest,
taking place October 2, 2010, at Sand Creek Brewing
Company!
For the fourth year in a row, a pumpkin decorating
contest and a dessert contest will be held in
conjunction with all the festivities planned throughout
the Oktoberfest celebration. Wal-Mart Super Center
will be the major sponsor for the contests and contest
chairperson, J.P Doyle, General Manager at Wal-Mart,
is very excited about the upcoming event. “We are
thrilled to help coordinate this part of the Oktoberfest
celebration,” he says. “We are hoping to get entire
families involved and look forward to a fun-filled day.”
There will be age categories for the pumpkin
decorating contest and the pumpkins can be painted or
carved. Use your imagination, originality and just
have fun with your ideas. The dessert contest will be
themed, using cranberries in the recipe. The desserts
will be judged on taste, presentation and ease of
preparation and recipes should be included with
entries. All contest items are to be delivered to the
loading dock area of Sand Creek Brewery, Third and
Pierce Streets, between 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. the
day of the event. A panel of independent judges will
judge the contests. Winners will be announced during
the noon hour and prizes will be awarded. Contest
registration forms are now available at the Black River
Area Chamber of Commerce (BRACC) or on the
website www.blackrivercountry.net.
This event has grown into a grand tradition and
organizers have planned a wide variety of other
activities for the whole family. Enjoy local artisans,
countywide retail store specials, brewery tours, and
beer making demonstrations throughout the day. The
“Things that Roll” Show and Shine Antique Car and
Motorcycle Show will be held on Pierce Street near the
brewery. Face painting will be done by Lois Corey and
Fevolden Farms Alpacas will be on display all day as
well as the Rock Wall, a climbing wall from
GameCraze for the stout of heart. A variety of music
will entertain throughout the day and there will be
plenty of food and drink at the brewery including
Burnstad’s Market signature brats.
The Black River Area Child Care Services, Inc.
(BRACCS) is sponsoring children’s events including
hands-on activities such as making macaroni and bead
necklaces, playing the ring toss game, picking a duck
for a prize, making Edelweiss hats, and coloring fall
pictures to name a few. The Karner Blue Princess,
Miss Black River Falls, Miss Jackson County and their
Courts will be volunteering throughout the day at the
children’s area. Co-chairman Natalie Cogswell is very
excited about working with the royalty groups and
stated, “BRACCS is pleased to have such a great group
of girls to work with and we expect to have a lot of fun
with all the children who attend.”
Sand Creek Brewing Company is located at 320 Pierce
Street in Black River Falls. The Black River Area
Oktoberfest is sponsored by the Black River Area
Chamber of Commerce, the Black River Falls

Our picturesque ridge-top farm is located in the
beautiful coulee region of southwest Wisconsin
(about 22 miles east of La Crosse, WI).
In
addition to seeing our alpacas and browsing The
HW Farm Shoppe, visitors to the farm are
provided with a scenic country drive and a
wonderful view. Our first huacaya alpacas arrived
at the farm in October 2004 and we purposefully
maintain a smaller herd to insure that all of our
animals receive quality daily attention. Whether
purchasing breeding stock or fiber/pet quality
alpacas, our customers can be assured that their
animals are healthy, in good condition, and wellmannered. In continually seeking to improve fiber
quality while maintaining correct confirmation, we
carefully select the herdsires we use for breeding.
As a result most of our herd can claim awardwinning genetics and many are award-winners
themselves.
Although selling alpaca fiber
products was not in the original plan, The HW
Farm Shoppe evolved as people continually asked,
“What do you do with the fiber?” and wondered
where to buy alpaca yarn and finished products.
The HW Farm Shoppe is open for our farm events
and for our farm visitors; it is “easily” open by
appointment for hands-on shoppers. Whether you
are curiously looking or seriously shopping for
quality alpacas, do contact us if you have
questions, would like to learn more about the
alpaca industry, or would like to arrange a farm
visit. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Fire Destroys a Portion of Falls Motel
The Falls Motel family would like to express their
sincere thanks to everyone who has shown support

community to know that the fire damage was in a
stand-alone building and the main building with
eight single rooms and a suite are fully functional
and ready to rent. They plan on rebuilding and
would appreciate guests referred to their facility in
the meantime.
