Driving a car made in Japan with 300+ hp that corners like its on rails gives the European automobile manufacturers fits! Jerry Alley and Scott Snyder of Subaru of Beechmont put together another great event for the Subaru group. Before the teams left on their journey, everyone was treated to lunch and a photo shoot of each participating team. Last year we had 15 teams compete, this year we were up to 21 teams and Subaru of Beechmont reserved Saturday, June 7, 2007 for the 3rd Annual Subaru Challenge Road Rally! Mark your calendars for 2008! We had a really good group of teams this year that were hungry for the $500 1st place prize. With such a hefty 1st place prize we needed to make this rally a little more challenging than most, so we threw in some very difficult scavenger hunt items. For once I am happy to say that no one had a perfect score. It seems that we have finally found the limits of how ingenious these teams can be when push comes to shove. Congratulations to our 1st Place team, Dan Coughnour & Ildiko Marcus who drove a really sharp 2002 Subaru WRX to the winners circle. It turns out that Dan has been competing in rallies for over 30 years. After looking over his Subaru that day, it wasn’t hard to understand that Dan & Ildiko meant business and it paid off! Our 2nd Place team was Jason Wolf & Kevin Bruns driving a slightly warmed over 2006 Subaru WRX. 3rd Place was taken by Sandy & Steven Miller driving a 2006 Subaru Outback. Congratulations to all who drove in this road rally! We would like to thank our Support Teams Bill Ahrens & Nancy Snyder who did a great job at the registration tent and scoring the rally packets after the event. Thanks everyone! We couldn’t do these rallies without your outstanding help! At this point in time we plan to conduct only 25 rallies, public & private for 2008. As we publish this edition of The Rally Newsletter, we have 9 private rallies already scheduled for the 2008 season which are listed on page 25. If you would like to schedule a private rally for your club, dealership, company, church, tourism bureau, etc, please contact us as soon as possible. We are receiving requests for conducting road rallies throughout Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois & Massachusetts. We will accept reservations for 2008 up until October 31, 2007 or until we reach our limit of 25 rallies. “Kentucky Back Roads” Road Rally 6/16/2007 We always enjoy our drives through the hills of Kentucky on the back roads so rarely traveled. Kentucky has so much to offer the motorist who is willing to take a chance on that scenic tree lined lane that snakes into the valley below. Many roads in the state are just as they were 70 years ago, with twists and turns that only the true automobile enthusiasts could love. We had great weather for the day with blue skies and not a cloud in sight! Teams from throughout Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and even Florida competed in this event that proved to be a more of a challenge than most of our road courses. Congratulations to Tim House & Marques Franklin, who drove Tim’s sharp 2001 Pontiac Firehawk to a 1st Place finish! By the way, Tim’s rare Firehawk was featured on our August 2006 Captain Meldahl’s Maze Coffee Mug. 2nd Place was taken by the always competitive team of Sam & Tira Rogers of the Porsche Club of America in their 2002 Porsche Boxster. 3rd Place was wrapped up by Bob Maimone & Linda Gill driving a 2003 Toyota Avalon. A special “Thanks” goes out to Bill Ahrens who, as always, did a fantastic job with registering everyone at the start of the rally and taking control of the scoring after the teams finished their rally. Thanks Bill! You know we can’t do this without your help. “Kentucky Back Roads” Road Rally 6/16/2007 POSITION TEAM VEHICLE CLUB AFFILIATION 1st Place Tim House & Marques Franklin 2001 Pontiac Firehawk 2nd Place Sam & Tira Rogers 2002 Porsche Boxster 3rd Place Bob Maimone & Linda Gill 2003 Toyota Avalon 4th Place Robert Krikorian & Marcelle Shidler 2005 Subaru STI 5th Place Dan & Rebecca Hoberland 1997 Jaguar XK8 Jaguar Club of Greater Cincinnati 6th Place Rich & Jody Frantz 1969 Jaguar E-Type Jaguar Club of Greater Cincinnati 7th Place Paul & Nick Nelson 1971 VW Beetle 8th Place William & Ervan Rich 1971 Dodge Charger 9th Place John Pescatrice & Nicole DeVaughn 2002 Mazda Miata 10th Place Tracy Bagley & Connie Schrand 2007 Toyota FJ Cruizer 11th Place Tom Martin & Verne Johnson 2006 Mini Cooper S 12th Place Rul Peck, Julie Peck 2004 Chevrolet Malibu 13th Place Ray & Robin Gardner 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser 14th Place Craig Binder & Wayne Best 1994 Buick Roadmaster Northern Kentucky F-Body Association 15th Place Richard & Rosie Broxton 1988 Jaguar XJS Jaguar Club of Greater Cincinnati 16th Place Webb & Cheryl Worth 1993 Suzuki Samurai 17th Place Bill Ahrens 2007 Saturn Sky Porsche Club of America SW Florida Miata Club Picture CD’s available for all rallies In the past we have always filled requests for 8 X 10 photos of teams competing in various road rallies. This was a challenge for us as many time the large pictures just didn’t turn out the way would like or the picture would be damaged in the mail. We are now offering CDs of each road rally over the past 4 years for only $15.00 each. The first 2 years of CDs were taken with film cameras, the following 2 years were a combination of film and digital and beginning with the 6/16/07 Kentucky Back Roads event, all pictures are digital. You can purchase a CD of your road rally with over 100 pictures, by calling us at 812-623-5727 or by downloading an order form the “Order Mugs/Photos” page on our website at www.SCENICROADRALLIES.com Corvettes of Hamilton Road Rally 6/30/2007 Our first all Corvette Road Rally turned out to be hugely successful with the help of Bob Piper of the Corvettes of Hamilton Club. Bob, who has attended several of our road rallies, asked us last year if we would be interested in conducting a road rally for Corvettes and his club especially. Obviously we said yes and plans were laid out for this exciting road rally. We had 20 teams compete in this rally which drew people from at least 4 Corvette Clubs; The Corvettes of Hamilton, Brookville Ohio Corvettes Club, The Cincinnati Corvette Club and the Ft. Thomas Corvette Club. During the course we made a stop at Dynamic MotorSports for a personal tour of this facility which builds Cobra MK III, Ford GTs and Shelby Daytona Coupes. This is a dream shop if there ever was one. Congratulations to Bob & Sharon Piper with the Corvettes of Hamilton, who drove a super nice 1966 Corvette Convertible to the winners circle! 2nd Place was nailed down by Doug & Sandy Murphy with the Corvettes of Hamilton, driving a 1995 Corvette. 3rd Place was taken by Jeff & Diana Ball also with the Corvettes of Hamilton club, who drove a 2002 Corvette in the road rally. A special “Thanks” goes out to our “Support Teams” on this road rally, Bill Ahrens who is our Support Team Leader, Bob Piper, Frank Leger and Sam Sunberg. Thanks for your help guys! In 2006 we almost had to cancel running this road course because the stream crossings were so deep and dangerous. This year we ran the course and due to the severe drought conditions, we were lucky to find 12 inches of water at our deepest crossing, Malachi’s Trap! This is the lowest we have seen the water level in the past four years but typically in the late winter/early spring we will see these crossings with over 10 feet of water! Next year we hope to have more suitable conditions for your Jeeps! This road course sells out early every year and this year we ended up with over 60 Jeeps including Support Teams and the Security detail provided by the Terrain Stompers Jeep Club in Cincinnati, Ohio. The vehicles ranged from Jack Stedam’s great looking 1975 AMC Cherokee to several 2007 models including Grand Cherokee, Commander, Wrangler Unlimited and Rubicon. This all Jeep road rally was sponsored by Wullenweber Jeep, 6315 Harrison Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 513-574-5500. Annie, Whitey and the other good folks at Wullenwebers did a fantastic job of feeding everyone after the rally and supplying some really great prizes to the top 21 teams in the event. Wullenwebers will also be hosting their annual Jeep Fest at their dealership on Sunday, September 16th. If you have a Jeep you owe it to yourself to attend this event which includes a show & shine, an obstacle course, RTI Ramp, Car Crushing, food, soft drinks and plenty of parts vendors! Call Annie or Whitey at 513-574-5500 for details! Congratulations to Steve and Selina McDine who drove a 1998 Jeep Wrangler to a 1st Place finish! Be forewarned everyone, Steve & Selina have already signed up for the Return to Devils Staircase four wheel drive road rally on Saturday September 29th and plan to take 1st Place again! Ron Mulford took home 2nd Place driving a very nice 1979 Jeep CJ-7. By the way, Ron is also signed up for the Return to Devil’s Staircase, so there will be some serious competition going on that day! 3rd Place was taken by veterans of past road rallies, Glenn & Jenny Petty driving a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We would like to thank our “Support Teams” on this road rally, Bill Ahrens who is our Support Team Leader, Ken & Chris Helfrich, Josh & Jennifer Claypool and Kelly Krinn. Thanks for your help everyone! We would also like to thank the Terrain Stompers Jeep Club from Cincinnati, Ohio who provided the Security Detail at each of the 7 stream crossings including: Tom Freier, Mike & Angie Grubbs, Andrew Wiebold, Cody Livesay, Bill, Matt & Mike Truett, Josh Regensburg & Emily Wilber, and Bryan Gentile. Porsches 2 Oxford Road Rally 7/29/2007 One of the largest Porsche meets east of the Mississippi was held in the historic town of Oxford, Ohio on Saturday July 28. 2007. Almost 300 Porsches from 15 states and Canada gathered for this annual event. The streets of Oxford were full of every type and color of Porsche that you could imagine. By days end hundreds of people from throughout the tristate strolled thru the show admiring German engineering at its best. On Sunday morning 22 Porsches from 5 states returned to run the Porsches 2 Oxford Road Rally. This 50 mile road course swept through 4 counties and 2 states taking the teams into some of the most beautiful areas near Oxford. This road rally was a bit different from most rallies due to the fact that we ran half of the teams in the opposite direction! This became somewhat confusing when half way through the route the teams began seeing Porsches going what appeared to be the wrong way! Competing teams represented the following Porsche Clubs: Ohio Valley Region of the Porsche Club of America; Allegheny Region of the Porsche Club of America; Mid- Ohio Region of the Porsche Club of America; The 356 Registry; Central Indiana Region of the Porsche Club of America; The Rally Sport Region of the Porsche Club of America Congratulations to Chris & Vickie Laux who took 1st Place in the road rally driving a 1998 Porsche Boxster. 2nd Place was taken by Brian Strohmeier and Andy Sommer driving a 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera and driving a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo, Gerhard & Lisa Hillmann took 3rd Place. During the 2004, 2005 & 2006 rally seasons, everyone who entered a road rally received one of our commemorative coffee mugs. During those 3 years, each road rally featured a different automobile on the side of the mug. Only 72 mugs were produced for each road rally which resulted in a fairly unique mug that everyone received. During the 2005 season several of the coffee mug colors were discontinued by our supplier and during the 2006 season the mugs became very difficult to obtain. For 2007 we made the decision to produce only 72 mugs for the entire year and to award a mug to the top 3 teams at each road rally. We will be conducting 20 rallies this year which translates into 60 mugs being awarded as prizes over the season. We have been asked by many people during this season if they could purchase a coffee mug. We expect to have about 10 mugs left at the end of the season and these mugs will go on sale November 1st, 2007. Our November 1st email will give everyone the information they need to purchase one of the remaining mugs. This will be a first come, first serve basis with special stipulations listed in the November email. We also have mugs left over from the 2004, 2005 & 2006 seasons for sale by going to the “Order Mugs/Photos” page on our website. All mugs can be viewed in our “Photo Gallery” under “Commemorative Coffee Mugs For Sale” although some of the mugs will show that they have been Sold Out. Mini Cooper vs BMW Z Road Rally 8/11/2007 With 12 straight days of 90+ degree heat we didn’t think things could get any hotter on the morning of this road rally sponsored by the BMW Store in Cincinnati, Ohio. But when the teams hit the road, the gloves came off and each team was out to win the title of “1st Place” for this unique road rally held in southwestern Ohio. A couple of unforeseen circumstances cropped up within the first few miles of the road rally. Two blocks of Madison Road was closed due to a street festival which resulted in Will & Bev having to rewrite the first few lines of each direction packet as the teams were pulling up to the starting gate. Less than a mile down the road from the street festival, a road sign for Plainville Road had been removed and caused a few interesting moments for the teams. After this point it was clear sailing and the teams headed out into the countryside for a day of driving bliss. Competing teams represented the following clubs: Cincinnati Minis; BMW Club of Cincinnati; Miami Valley Triumph Club; CincyZRoadsters; ZSCCA; and the BMWCCA. Congratulations to Linda & Beth Averbeck for taking 1st Place in this road rally, driving a 2006 Mini Cooper with a near perfect score of 210 out of a possible 215! 2nd Place was taken by David & Laura Bales with the Cincinnati Mini Club driving a 2006 Mini Cooper S Convertible. 3rd Place was nailed down by Katrina Farley & Timothy Orth driving a 2001 BMW Z3. We would like to thank Will Sherman at the BMW Store, 6131 Stewart Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45227, 513-271-8700, for pulling everything together to make this event so successful! Will did a fantastic job making sure everyone had eats and drinks before and after the road rally and supplied prizes to the top 3 teams in the event. Thanks Will! Swiss Wine Festival Road Rally 8/25/2007 The 2nd Annual Swiss Wine Festival Road Rally saw teams from throughout Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Illinois compete on one of the best all around road courses in the area. The scenic 64 mile course included every possible hill and valley in Switzerland County along with beautiful views of the Ohio River. Vehicles driven ranged from a lethal 1966 Ford AC Cobra to mini vans. When the teams finished up the tour at the Swiss Wine Festival, it was apparent that the number of people in a vehicle would win out over the number of cubic inches under the hood. This road rally was very similar to last years Swiss Wine Festival Road Rally. The temperature was in the low 90s with a late afternoon shower and like last year, the Shifflett/Booker/Eagan team took 1st Place! Congratulations to Chris & Cheryl Shifflett, Steve & Natalie Booker and Emily, Dillon, Katlyn & Ashlyn Eagan for taking the checkered flag! 2nd Place went to Leslie Williams and Eddie Rasnick driving their new 2007 Mitsubishi Raider with less than 1000 miles on the odometer. 3rd Place was taken by Gerald, Julie & Jacob Mauch driving a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero with over 175,000 miles on the odometer!
