Captains Fourball RESULTS Singles Stroke by FIDDLER'S CREEK Sunday 21st June DAVID EDWARDS (13) JOHN SHEEHY (12) KEVIN DUFFICY (6) 68 70 70 B9 FERGAL O'FLAHERTY (6) PETER MAGUIRE (12) EOIN GAUGHAN (2) 71 71 71 B9 B9 B9 No. of Entries 80 CSS : 74 SOLSTICE WIN FOR STEADY EDWARDS On the longest day of the year David Edwards (shown here) had plenty of daylight to record a great score of 68 to win the Fiddlers Creek Singles Stroke by 2. The conditions were tricky with testing winds and the occasional shower and as a result the CSS was 74 which is high for June. Dave started in style with a birdie on 1 , another followed on 5 and his birdie on 9 meant a level par front nine , a personal best. The back nine proved trickier as the reality of the front nine was kicking in. Very good bogies on 11 and 12 into a strong wind and things were looking good turning for home. However double bogies on 13 & 15 gave him the wobbles , which can easily happen when you are playing with Stafford. A solid finish of par, bogey, bogey on the final three was enough to beat CSS by 6 shots … great round David. ITALIA 90 – A NATION HOLDS ITS BREATH Bonner Saves O’Leary Scores Its hard to imagine that the day that Ireland beat Romania to reach the Quarter Final of the 1990 World Cup, a memory etched in the minds of most Irish people, took place a quarter of a century ago this Thursday. Several club members were there to witness all/some of the Qualifying matches which took place in the sun drenched(mostly) islands of Sardinia and Sicily This was a time before the Euro , when three thousand Lira was needed to buy a pizza and travellers cheques were brought and lost with regularity. A time when rookie travellers ran up hotel laundry bills for underwear that would have been enough to buy boxers for half of the Sligo contingent. Likewise mobile phones were way in the future and banks of public phones were set up with queues reminiscent of a Prison movie. One man, worse for wear, phoned home and was answered by a strange voice, he thought the worst and verbally assaulted the man for being in his house with his missus until he realised he had rung the wrong number. Noel Kennedys article attached gives a great snapshot account of the trip. It was supplied by George Chadda, who on his return from Italy, watched the Romania match huddled around a TV with most of the passengers on the Dublin Sligo train. The carriage went crazy when Packy saved just outside Dromod ( or was it Genoa?) and was close to derailment as the carriage rocked and rolled coming into Carrick in an ecstatic eruption when O'Leary slotted the penalty to take us into the Quarter final against the hosts. George notes that “Italia'90 was an unforgettable experience and memories I will always treasure” a view shared by so many at home and abroad. Here are some pictures courtesy of Geoff Chrystal and Neill Gaynor from those halcyon days. CSS 74, 36pts LADY PRESIDENTS DAY – Mrs Grainne Demmel Lady President’s Day 2015 was a huge success, with a day of no rain and relatively little wind. Grainne greeted everyone from early morning on Saturday till early morning on Sunday. Her very attractive display of prizes was a huge encouragement to all to bring out the best in our golf. The golf course was also in great condition with some very tricky pin positions on the greens. However some great scores were recorded on the day. The evening started off for Grainne surrounded by her husband Hermann, her son Karl with his wife Maura and their two girls Catherine and Jenny, Lorna and Phil, Gwen and Steve from Switzerland and Kathy from Germany. Her brothers Tony and Eamonn with their wives Una and Isobel and nephew Joe also joined Grainne . A beautiful meal was enjoyed by all before the most important part of the evening the announcement of the prizes by the competition secretary Edel. Grainne was welcomed by the President Padraic McMunn who remembers Grainne from her days as a great dancer in the ballrooms of Sligo before she married Hermann. Grainne has won many notable golf prizes in her successful golf career winning 4 Lady Captains Prizes and two Lady Presidents Prizes. She also won the All-Ireland senior mixed foursomes in 1987, the Connacht Junior Medal in 1995 and the GOY medal in 2014. Grainne was also a notable badminton player too before becoming a golf player. Grainne thanked everyone for their courtesy and goodwill towards her during her year and especially thanked Lady Captain Carmel and Edel and Michelle. She also thanked the Junior girls, Niamh, Grace, Anna, Lucy, Jenny and Emily who took the photos on the first tee, Madge and Ann for the flowers, David and all the staff in the golf club and especially Hermann whose cooking skills are showing great promise. Grainne was delighted with her son Karl winning the men guest’s Bomore prize and her daughter -in -law Maura winning the overall back 9. Valerie Booker has started off her season with a great score, winning the overall prize and shows her potential as a talented golf player. Rosie Mullan and Emma K Flanagan are also keen golfers improving rapidly winning the 1st and 2nd nett prizes. Grainne was delighted with all the winners but especially with the winner of the Guest Lady prize Moira Moylan who also won her Lady Captain’s Day prize in 1988. Well done to Grainne on her very enjoyable day.
