Captains Day - The County Sligo Golf Club
Captains Day
Breaking Points Number 32
CAPTAINS LOG
I had a wonderful Captains Day last Saturday. A great turnout with over 180 competitors & I would
like to thank all the members for their support on the day. Events like this require careful
organisation & with the help & assistance from David O’Donovan & his team Anne & Keith
ensured that the day & evening was a success. The course on the day was presented in super
condition. Many thanks to Mark Miller & his greenkeeping staff for their special effort over the last
week. The pin positions were carefully selected with the pin position on the new second green
extension proving an interesting addition. Many thanks to Jim & Maggie & Martin in the
professional shop & Dave Dent the Courser Ranger on the day. I would like to thank the many
volunteers involved in making it a memorable day. To Eileen Canning & Madge Smith for the
wonderful display of flowers throughout the Clubhouse. Our Caterers Brian, Eamon. Karen &
Niamh The time sheet starters & photographers: Niall Stafford, Vincent McGee, President
Padraig, Alex McAleenan, Kevin Flanagan & especially Vice Captain Jeff for his endurance on the
afternoon/evening shifts. Peter Maguire & his team for organising the competition. Gerry
McManus & John McHugh for the excellent presentation of prizes & to our Hon Sec. Joe Keyes
our MC for his very smooth running of the evening proceedings.
Congratulations to all the prize winners on the day. A worthy winner in Alex McAleenan with a
super score of 67 in blustery conditions that only needed 22 putts from an old putter reignited for
the day.
Well done to our Fred Daly team who defeated Galway CG in an epic Connacht Final in Athlone
last Friday. Thanks to all the team & to Captain Terry Brady & Vice Captain Tom Ford for a great
display of golf coming down the stretch. Our first pennant of 2015 now hangs proudly in the bar.
Finally, my sincere condolences to Bill and the O’Driscoll family on the sad passing this week of
Doreen, a much loved member of the community and this club. May she rest in Peace
Aidan Doyle
CAPTAIN’S PRIZE WINNER
ALEX McALEENAN
The winner of the 2015 Captain’s Prize, was Fourball partner and good friend of the Captain, the bronzed and affable Alex
McAleenan with a superb 67 nett playing off 8.
The key to the round was the fact that Alex reverted to an old putter for this special round. He waved it about in Potteresque
fashion to conjure up a round that contained only 22 putts the details of which are contained below.
1st - 1 putt from 30ft for par 2nd - 2 putts for bogey 3rd - 1 putt from 10ft for birdie 4th - 1 putt from 30ft for birdie
5th - 1 putt from 2ft for birdie
6th - Chipped in for birdie
7th - 2 putts for double bogey
8th - 1 putt from 3ft for par ( close to being a bird from back of green)
9th - 2 putts for bogey
10th - 1 8ft putt for par
11th - 2 putts for bogey ( last one about 10ft ) 12th - 2 putts for bogey
13th - 1 putt from 10ft for par. (up and down from bunker) 14th - 1 putt for a great 5 after bad drive / bad second / 4ron for 3rd .
15th - 1 putt from 25ft for par 16th - 1 putt from 8ft 17th - 1 putt from 5ft 18th - 1 putt from 5ft for par

Great scoring on the day after
Captains saw the charismatic
Eugene Henry piping Patrick
“ball in the bin” Woulfe on the
Back 9. Playing with
G Hargadon & M McDonnell,
Eugene had a quiet Front 9
with just a single par for 17
pts. Then the magic kicked
in with pars on 10, 11,
birdie on hole 12 courtesy of a 40ft putt
followed by a par on 13. An up and down
from the bunker on 15 for par and another
par on 18 meant a brilliant score of 2 over par
on the Back 9 for 25 points.
Jack O’Sullivan Trophy The first match is coming up
on the 16th July away to Boyle GC.
CECIL EWING Bad luck to Sean Moylan’s team who
went down 3-2 to Boyle GC l
Terry Brady and Tom Ford have secured Aidan Doyles first pennant when they masterminded a fantastic win for
Rosses in the Fred Daly Final in Athlone against arch rivals Galway! El Classico was always going to be tight and
so it proved with 3 matches going to tie holes. The team travels to Moyola Park at the end of August to play in the
all Ireland finals. Thanks to all the players, caddies and supporters who travelled, David won on the 19th, Cian won
3/2, TJ lost 3/2, Joseph won 19th, Tom O'Hara called in on 19 having been dormy 3 down, Conor lost 1 hole,
Paddy won 2/1 ! A great day!! (K Flanagan)

Univercities Olympics. It is a 4 round tournament with a team and individual
event! Golf in a sauna!! Humidity 80-90%! A far cry from Bomore!!.
In the photo above a player's ball lies completely on sand;
a) Is the ball in the bunker?
b) May the player ground their club in the bunker in preparing
to make a stroke at the ball?
c) In the absence of any Local Rule may the stone be removed
from the bunker before the player makes their stroke?
d) The player takes their stance in the bunker to play their ball lying just outside the
bunker, but they do not ground their club. Before they commence their stroke, wind
causes the ball to roll down into the bunker. Do they incur a penalty and do they have to
play the next stroke from within the bunker where the ball came to rest?
LAST WEEK Identifying Ball in Long Grass. Ans a) Yes b) Yes c) The ball may only be cleaned to the

BALL IN THE BIN
Patrick Woulfe(left) on
…..Captains day hit a six iron
approach to 14th. As his
playing partners, Declan
O’Brien and Gerry Cullinane,
watched it coming in to land a
little long and a little left of the
14th they heard a loud clatter.
They found it in the green bin
on the ladies 7th tee !!! A slam
dunk from 150 metres, is it a
bin eagle?
Tks to Declan for great photo.

NEW MEMBER – Brendan Brogan
Last Weeks Bomore Winner was Brendan Brogan whom I
had incorrectly named Bernard Brogan. Here is a little
about Brendan. “I am a retired primary school teacher. All
outdoor sports interest me. I am a regular cyclist with
Innisfree Wheelers C C. Some 30 years ago I was a
member of Strandhill G C and did rather well on a
Captain's Day, But in the pursuit of perfection frustration
set in and the clubs were dumped!
My love for the game of golf was recently rekindled and I
gladly knock the ball about with a great bunch of guys, the
Super Seniors on Mondays and Thursday mornings.
