DIEHARD DIGEST - -

The Secretary reports .
The big news round the Valley in recent weeks has
been the Club's acquisition of a 20 years' lease of an
additional portion of Crosby Park known to us all as the
"Nursery." Plans are now well under way for the
construction of the new Leagues Club, together with
another playing oval (floodlit), squash courts and
parking area; this being the first stage of development
and later bowling greens and an Olympic Swimming
Pool.
A tremendous amount of work has gone into the
initial preparatory work, and our thanks and
appreciation are due to a number of people, especially
our Committee Members Fred Neumann, Ken Overell,
Har'ry Long, Ted Norris and Executive Members of the
Supporters Club. More details on the project in next
month's issue.
Other big news recently has been the selection of
Gerard Fitzpatrick in the Queensland Side against New
South Wales and New Zealand Colts. Thought he
performed 100 percent in both games, and is certain to
be in the side to travel to Sydney for the game there on
4th August. By the time this magazine reaches you, the
side will have been selected, and I am confident he will
have other Valley team mates with him on the trip
South.
The Premiership race is really on, and I am pleased
to report that five out of our six senior sides will be
contesting the semi finals, and at this stage all five sides
could play in the Number One Semi Final. A great
effort, and my personal thanks to all players, managers,
selectors and coac ht's.
Since our last issut' the First Grade side convincingly
beat Easts in the Pett'r Scott Memorial Final by 18
points to nil, and followed this victory up with a 33-10
drubbing of Wests. Sorry to report that Ray Breen's
side suffered their first defeat recently, but no worries
Ray, the big one will be ours.
With regard to the weekly hotel raffles, I appeal to all
players who will be making the "End fo Season" Trip to
give more assistance with these raffles. The attendance
by some of these players has been non existent at some
hotels lately, so fellas, please assist. I would like to
point out that one city hotel is practically manned by
lower grade Ia ers.
The Phantom writes ..
In this, the most unpredictable of League seasons,
Valleys have practically overnight separated the men
from the boys.
A few short weeks ago, supporters of seven of the
eight clubs held out hopes of their side playing in the
1973 grand final.
~
All of a sudden that list has shrunk to a probable
three.
Brothers were first to join Wynnum Manly on the
scrap heap, although they gave the Diehards three of
their toughest games. The widest winning margin in the
three wins by Valleys was seven points.
Then Easts' prospects took a real nosedive in the
Peter Scott Memorial when they failed to score a point
against Valleys in losing 18-0.
Next for the chopping block were Wests, who were
caned 33-10, with all the ball in the second half.
On the surface, it seems to be left to Norths and
Redcliffe to fight for the privilege of being beaten by
Valleys in the grand final.
At the start of the season, club coach Henry
Holloway said thlit he could not remember a time when
the Diehards had so much senior depth.
That has been borne out with the plugging of gaps
through injury by seasoned, experienced players- one
of the many reasons Valleys have been unchallenge ...__/
leaders throughout the season.
Would there be any significance in the fact that the
two teams currently at the head of the A grade
premiership ladder, Valleys and Norths, had only one
representative between them in the State side?
Gerry Fitzpatrick made it, and made it on merit.
But the fact that he was the only one illustrates the
value of teamwork. No real stars, just all players
combining as a team.
·
And it's the side with teamwork, plus the occasional
flash of individual brilliance, that will win you
premierships.
Naturally, there are Diehard supporters who say
there should be more Valleys players in the State side
- and they're right!

Pen Picture
Our pen picture this issue is also of a forward , from
that centre of renowned forwards, Ipswich. Hugh
O'Doherty learnt the fundamentals of the great game of
Rugb~ League at St. Mary's Christian Bros. College at
\\;Ch.
A a youngster Hugh represented Ipswich in all the
eight and age sides, and after leaving school he
"' actuated into A Grade with Ipswich Norths. This
auld surprise no one, but the remarkable fact about it
· hat he was only sixteen years of age when he gained
and held his position in A Grade football. Incidentally,
t this time he played with Brothers Club. Another
remarkable fact that over a period of five years Hughie
played first grade in every position on the field bar
one. This must be some sort of a record .
Hugh came to Valleys in 1970, where he teamed up
;th his old rival J. Crilly. And what wonderful assets
\alley acquired. Hughie has proved himself the best
oo ·er forward in Brisbane football, if not in
Queensland. His record speaks for itself as he has
represe nted Queensland in 1970, and 1971. He was
elected in the Queensland squad this year, but owing
to business reasons he was forced to withdraw.
Hugh has pia~ ed in the last three grand finals for
aile) and pla)ed no mean part in bringing home the
a on in 1 - and 1 - 1. Having played m·er fifty games

Hugh
O'Doherty
When asked his opinion as to the coaching ability of
Henry Holloway, he replied that Henry was the best
coach he had ever played under. A sentiment shared by
so many of our players. We will have to keep that
Henry fellow.
Hughie is married and his wife Dianne loves football,
she hasn't misse_d a game that Hughie has played in.
They have a lovely li ttle daughter of nine months
named Stephenie, and Oh Boy is father the proud one.
Hughie's future in football is wrapped up in Valleys,
where , he says, he will spend the rest of his football
days . At twenty-five years of age he has quite a few
years_left. He says th~t football is becoming tougher all
t.he time . and he thmks, because of the professional
aspect o_f _t he game today. His advice to young players is
to conditiOn themse!Yes. as you have to be in tip top
condition to play and avoid injuries.
Hughie O'Doherty is a credit to his club on and off
the field. and indeed Valleys are most fortunate to have
this thorough gentleman as one of them

OUR SELECTORS
Some of the most maligned members of any football
club surely must be the selectors at some time or
another. Sure at times we think they have made a
istake in putting in this player instead of this one.
dowever we must realise that they have elected to do a
job. and although mistakes are sometimes made, no
one is perfect and they do their job to the best of their
ability. It was us , the club members who elected the
selectors, and remember that oft quoted Valley saying,
'One fo r all and all for one,' and give them
encouragement for a thankless job, that on the who! ~ is
well done.
Charlie Kelly
Our senior selector is Charlie Kelly, who first joined
Valleys Club in 1926. Charlie played for Valleys in the
late twenties. He was first a selector from 1926 to 1938.
He was again appointed a selector in 1957. and has held
that position until the present day, \\;th the exception
of two years. He has also been a committee member for
the same period of time also. Charlie KeU~ ~as a
foundation member of the Valley Old Bo)
Association, and was instrumental in forming thio m t
important part of our club. He was president-of the Old
Boys for three years, and has the honour of gainin=- the
first life membership bestowed by them. He is eni r
Yice president of the Old Boys, and was made a life
member of the club in 1938.

Graham Shields commenced playing with the
Valleys under 18 Grade in 1956, as fullback. In 19-- he
graduated to C grade to be a member of the
premiership side scoring four tries in the grand final.
He played Reserve Grade in 1958, and gained a place in
the first side the next year in 1959. Graham played ht
football in Tully in 1963, and was a member of the
Foley Shield winners. He returned to Valleys, where he
continued playing and represented Brisbane in 1966.
Graham was on the management committee for three
years, and also an Old Boys committee member for
three years. This is the second year that he has been a
selector.

e s Girl of the Month
from THE coach
Well, members, what a lovely position to be in at this
stage of the competition, with four games to go, and
nearly assured of the minor premiership. As this goes to
press we are due to play Norths, and having beaten
them will be four or five points in front of the next
team. I say this without being over confident as our side
has really applied themselves. This was apparent by
that "great" Peter Scott memorial win, and then Wests
were not allowed in the picture to avenge the first two
rounds' defeats. When have Easts been beaten to nil in
the last decade? Come on you historians.
~1is s Dianne Neilsen is the Digest's choice for
·alley's girl of the month. Dianne is twenty two years
f age and is a stenographer with an insurance finn.
Dian ne is an outdoor girl who enjoys playing squash,
.1.·im ming and watching football. She is also an a'id
-,ok reader. She has recently become engaged o Ian
"!son, who plays with V alleys. We think that a alley
:Jl of the month adds glamour to our Dige t.
Valley Old
Boys
Wests knew they were playing a fully fit in form side
. this time, and it was one of the few times that you saw
attack at its best; defence superb, and most important,
the man running onto the ball and each player fitting
into the pattern of play. I know we have to hold that
form and keenness, but that's my problem so no worries
there.
I would like to give Ross Stru-dwick special mention
on his complete· dominance over his opposition
half-backs in the last two games. Ross just keep that up
and will be rewarded.
Thanks Marty, your leadership was complete and
concise pal. Keep it up. Congrats to you Fitz on your
State games. Who knows, you may finish up with a
forced holiday later in the year.
The reserves seem to have done their dash, after they
let the last two games out of the bag. Remember boys,
vou haYe to fire from the bell, not in the second half
onlv. as YOU did against Easts. I hope you can win the
next fi\e~ YOU never know, miracles have happened-
19-o.
In the last edition it was advised that Charlie Kelly
was in hospital. Well he fooled everyone and came
orne about the same time as that Digest was received
y Members. But it was only for a couple of weeks
ecause he went back into Greenslopes Hospital and
had the operation the week before this edition went to
nress. Here's wishing you a quick recovery Charlie.
Congratulations to the First Grade side for winning
the Peter Scott Memorial Shield. This was a great
\ictory over Easts.
The A nnual Dinner Dance will be held on Saturdav

..-·eat night with good food, plenty to drink and
excellent Entertainment. So Members are advised to

In conclusion I would like to say thanks sincerely to
tho e friendly donors who shouted a sip after the Peter
Scott. especially to Peter Scott junior. The boys fully
appreciated it.
By the time I go to press again I hope we will be
m inor premiers, leading try scorers, and Craven 'A'
trophy winners.
It "'ill be a hard job, because as it is said:- 'We don't
play attractive entertaining football.' DO WE!!
Keep jogging.

TOUCH FO OTBALL
.After a late start Valley's touch football side was
graded into the 2nd di-..ision, they were too late to enter
the first division competition. However, in their first
fixture game they defeated Coolum Lifesavers by 9 tries
to 2. This was a great start and the boys are lookmg
forward to more victories.
~
Touch footey is played mainly by ex-players who
desire to stay in ·s ome sort of condition. It is played by
eight a side, and is a pretty keen competition. The final
will be playe d by the two leading teams a week after the

The other sides in this competition are Coolum

Firstly, congratulations to the Under 14 team on a
well deserved President's Cup victory over Norths by
13-10. The last five nerve-shattering minutes, in which

going, their defeats are usually only by a few points,
and at times they produce good football. In the Under
16 Grade, Bobby Brown's boys. playing against much
bigger teams, are, nevertheless. going well. The team is
playing with lots of determination and spirit. The
Under 17 A side have been disappointing of late. the
tackling department does not seem to be up to scratch,
so come on fellas, get with it. The Under 17B team are
going well and we have high hopes of a premiership
from Ken Grant and his players.
Our Under 18 side has us scratching our heads at
times, with their erratic form. Bad luck for Brian
Saunders breaking his thumb recently.
At this stage most · teams have good semi-final
prospects, with the honours to the Under 14 side being
minor premiers already.
The juniors would like to wish all senior teams the
very best, coming up to the finals - v.i.th a special
mention to Henry, Marty and the boys on their good
performances of late.

"MISS JUNIOR VALLEYS"
GAYLE BUTTERWORTH
Gayle is an 18 year old Clerk Typist of Stafford.
Gayle attended Stafford State School, Everton Park
High and finally Kangaroo Point Business College.
At Everton Park, Gayle captured the Under 16 girls
Athletic Championship in 1970.
Another first for our Miss Valleys Juniors was at the
recent Dayboro Rodeo of which Gayle is Assistant ·
Secretary; this versatile young lady rode a Brahma
Bull for the required time of eight seconds under
international Rodeo Rules.
Her ability to handle animals has also amassed
Gayle hundreds of ribbons and prizes including dozen
of championships for horst riding at Qld. Agricultural
Shows and was Resene Champion Girl Rider of the
1969 Brisbane Royal Show. Gayle also has been placed
in Ladies Qld. Buck Jumping Championships.
A keen "Diehard" supporter of both senior and
junior Rugby League, a Horsewoman of tremendous
ability and an excellent athlete into the bargain coupled
with a great personality (not forgetting her attractiveness) one can see why Gayle got the Judges nod. Once
again, congratulations to Miss Junior Valleys of 1973.
Boy. the closest I would get to a Brahman Bull would
be on a plate and then it would have to be well done.

Valley United Stars
MEMORIES OF BYGONE YEARS
From a Social Club formed on 7th September, 1963
to give the local kids a Christmas Tree , saw the forming
of Valley United Stars J.R.L.F.C.
From a surplus of a few pounds left over we then
decided to form our now Football Club in 1964. Andy
Clarken became our first President along with A. Baker
as Secretary, and A. Eadie as Treasurer, with N.
Pardella, Social Secretary.
One wonders how we managed to buy jerseys and
extras, but I first must thank Mr. Fred Neumann and
George Dziewicki, who were then President and
Secretary of our present Parent Club - Fortitude
Valley, for their approval to approach Whatmore's
Sports Store and Mr. Errol La Franz to open our first
account. We fortunately gave these gentlemen no
cause to worry finance wise.
Without a clubhouse we held all of our meetings in
our garage and our boys can tell what meetings they
were. No time limit was placed and some nights we
carried on till twelve and one o'clock in the morning.
Later on we managed to lease from the Council a piece
of land in Bulimba Street, Bulimba for our playing field .
With the real Diehard spirit and a team of willing
workers. we have now 2 first class ovals. Also we have
had Australian and World Cup sides under Coach
arry Bath, train on these fields, and our club has been
.>mplimented many times for its marvellous condition.
From these words a vote of thanks must go to the late
Dave Cussens who spent many long hours in the
preparation.
For the first clubhouse on the grounds we had to hire
a shed from Hornibrooks for a time until we were able
to build our existing clubhouse. We are all very
thankful we had Billy Anderson to guide us along
correctly on the building.
On reviewing our first financial report in 1964, how, I
don 't know, we had a credit of 852 pounds-8-5,
which shows we had a very good winning bunch of
members.
Only two teams were fielded in 1964, i.e. 12s and 13s.
Coach for the 12s was Bill Anderson. and 13s Merv.
Woodford. It wasn't a very happy season for Bill as he
only lost two games throughout the season, which were
the President'' Cup and Premiership final.
Continuing the good work we have now extended
further to building another new clubhouse, behind our
present one to improve our Social nights and the
Diehard spirit.
Valley United Stars J.R.L.F.C. is now well
established but one must not forget the ladies for their
help and financial assistance which were worked under
hard and trying times. Some names which should be
mentioned are Mesdames Gwen Anderson, Norma
Clarken, Mary Mathieson, Ann Baker, Mavis
Abraham, Phyllis Titman, Joan Anderson, Audrey
Prestridge, Hazel McLean, June McFetridge and many
more cannot be remembered, for which an apology is
noted.
The early beginning may have been very hard, a lot
of work has been done by many, but, I feel, when we
see the result we're very proud of "Valley United Stars"
J.R.L.F.C.
A. Baker,
Secretary -1964-69.

Stafford Division
Valleys Emerson Park Division finished the Cup
battle with four President's Cups out of a possible
seven. Congratulations go to the Under 8s, Under 9
(Special Division), Under lOA , and the 13B side. While
congratulations are being passed around, let's send an
extra special congratulation to Miss Gayle Butterworth
in being selected as Miss Valley Juniors. In this edition
we enclose a photograph of Gayle and a few details
which prompted her to enter this quest.
I wish I knew how to get on the judging panel. What
a sweet job to cop. Ernie Dunglison is still grinning and
informs me that he has already nominated himself for
the job (?) next season.
A very sound suggestion discussed at our last
Meeting will be put into practice in the off season in an
attempt to maintain the boys' interest in between
Football seasons. Cricket teams are to be formed and
various outings will be arranged. Good thinking from
Emma's Committee.
A well known face (football wise) was seen at our
ground one training night showing the under llB side
some finer points on the game. The Player concerned
was Brothers Captain Coach and ex-International Lock,
Col Weiss. Very heartening to see a footballer of his
standing passing on hints to the younger players
irrespective of what Club they represent.
The Committee, Coaches and Managers and all
supporters from Emmerson Park wish the Senior sides
the best of luck in their remaining important matches
and congratulations to Coach Henry Holloway and
Matty and his men on their great win over the Tigers in
the Peter Scott Memorial Trophy.
UP THE BLUES.
