Going for the gold, Mike
PRESIDENTS CORNER September 2014 You could be a red neck if your metal detector costs more than your car...You could be a redneck if your metal detector costs more than your wife's engagement ring…You could be a redneck if your metal detector costs more than your mom and dad’s first house... Wow the cost of a metal detector has skyrocketed with the price of gold, would we be paying as much if gold was 250.00 an ounce, some of us would, it’s more than the money. Gold fever has no cure except maybe the satisfaction of the discovery. Coils cost upwards of $600.00 yet they seem to last only a few years. I have repaired several coils and the biggest problem has been leaving them in the car, which causes the styrofoam to shrink. Heat is your biggest enemy causing the tape which is used to hold together wires in the coil to separate. When you touch anything with the coil it sounds off as a target response, or just a slight bump caused erratic behavior. You have a transmitting coil and a receiving coil with a little wire which aligns them seen with a o scope. When this wire moves the signal misaligns and acts erratic as with a responsive signal, very frustrating. Keep your metal detector out of a hot car and away from a heat source. If you shake the coil and you feel movement the styrofoam has shrunk causing movement and erratic behavior. I have opened up the coils and used silicone to fill the space created from the shrinking, fixing the problem and quieting the coil. You've invested a lot of money in your metal detector so take care, some detector builders are starting to stop repairs on older models hoping you will upgrade. The good manufacturers stand behind what they've created, period. Before you buy, ask questions about the company. Especially when buying used equipment. If you have a question on your machine or a future purchase email the Goldhounds and I will be glad to respond in the Presidents Corner..... Going for the gold, Mike Cyndy’s Meeting Notes: Notes from the August 8, 2014 meeting: Mike started the meeting off with his usual charm and wit and announced that the ice cream for our ice cream social would be there at 7:30pm, to the groans of all of us waiting for our ice cream. In the meantime, Mike announced the 2 miners of the month. The first one was to go to our “Ambassador for Gold Mining”- Ray Dodds. And the other went to someone who has put in many years at a somewhat thankless, but important job. Our “Queen of the kitchen”- Lee Buhler. CONGRATS to both of you! Mike’s winner of the nugget went to Katsuto Oune, for traveling the longest distance. He came from San Francisco for the meeting. By way of Red Hawk Casino to do a little mining of a different kind too! He said he lost his pan and shovel there. Hee hee! Mike did a short program on gold and finding it at the La Porte outing. Afterward, Cyndy had a surprise presentation. In appreciation for all the years of producing our wonderful BBQ tri-tip meat at our large camp- outings, Don Coppin was presented with a “BBQ Master” swinger for his name tag. THANK YOU Don, your tireless work is truly appreciated! Mike handed out a slip of paper to everyone for a game to play while enjoying the ice cream, that helped everyone learn everyone else’s name. You had to spell “GOLDHOUNDS” with the first letter of someone in the club’s First, Middle, or Last name. That was quite a game! I didn’t catch what the first, second or third prizes were, nor the names of the winners. But it had everyone talking to each other as well as enjoying their ice cream! CONGRATULATIONS to the winners! Thank You very much to the Red Hat Ladies for all your help serving the ice cream, also to ALL the members for the wonderful toppings for the ice cream, also to any members that brought fruit and veggies to share with everyone! Of course we had our raffle too! And thank goodness we had a couple of people that brought their cameras to the meeting! And Don’t Forget Sept. 12, 13 & 14, 2014 The State and National Gold Panning Championships will be on Sept. 13 & 14, this year. NOT ON LABOR DAY. Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, will be the set up date for the Gold Panning Championships this year. If you would like to help out with getting things set up for this event, the start time will be at 8:00am on Friday, Sept. 12 th. At the Park in Foresthill. We are usually finished by 12:00pm, or shortly afterward. (Our monthly meeting will also be held in AUBURN on this evening as usual.) This year we are hosting the State and the National Championships! Thanx! Cyndy Heather and Helper supervising the raffle table, Thanks! Are these the winning numbers? Ray Dodds, “Ambassador for Gold Mining” Our “Queen of the Kitchen” Lee Buhler Ever wondered how the vials of gold used to teach gold panning get filled? Now you know…Thank you Cyndy! From Annie Robinson TO OUR GOLDHOUND MEMBERS, OUR ANNUAL HERITAGE CELEBRATION AND THE GOLDPANNING CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL NOT BE HELD ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND. WE HAVE MOVED THE DATE TO THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND, 9/13 & 9/14. CALIFORNIA STATE AND U.S. GOLD PANNING CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL BE HELD AT THE FORESTHILL HERITAGE CELEBRATION – SEPTEMBER 13 & 14, 2014, AT THE MEMORIAL PARK Our event is right around the corner! We are getting ready for a busy & fun time. This year will be for two Championships, the State and the U.S. Nationals. The World Gold Panning event will have 21 Countries competing for the World titles and will be held in Kopparberg, Sweden, August 11-17. Fuzzy & Joyce Mason along with Mike & Barbara Sutton will be there to represent the United States then return to California in time to compete in our State and U.S. events. Good Luck on your winning and be safe on your trip. The World will be held in Placerville, Calif. in 2016 and will be an exciting time for all of us who enjoy panning competition. The World was held in Coloma in 1998 and we will never forget the excitement of the 21 countries that traveled to California for a week of camaraderie and celebration. Years ago our Life member Carol Ebbitt served as our U.S. Representative. We will never forget Carol and her enjoyment of gold panning competition and traveling to the World events. She is missed and what a winner! Our State and U.S. event is expected to draw the best panners in the U.S. The Competition will look like the “who’s who” in gold panning. Competing this year will be California State and U.S. National Medal Winners, including previous World Gold Panning Participants, with the 2001 World Senior Champion Mike Sutton. Goldhounds will hold our Annual raffle drawing on Sunday; you need not be present to win. The Championships will begin at 8:00 am both days, 9/13 & 9/14. We will be setting up tents, tables, etc. on Friday, 9/12. The regular meeting will be held that evening at the Memorial Hall in Auburn. Some of you that come from out of town will be staying at the Memorial Park for the weekend. We have lots of RV, trailer and camping room and it’s free. If you come in on the afternoon 9/12 you may stay in the front parking lot near the Memorial Hall. We will be there and we hope to get you into the camping area early afternoon. If you have not signed up for the weekend help, come on in and we will put you where you are needed. We need Timers for the Gold Panning Championships and Ray Dodds of “Nuggetsville Gold Panning” can always use help teaching the adults and the little ones. We would sure appreciate what time you can give to this event as this is our only fundraiser for the year. We will have a sign-up sheet at the next meeting or email us to let us know you can help. My email is [email protected]. The following are the booths we have to cover: Control & set up will be the responsibility of Don Robinson, Ron Gribble, Mike Bowers & Robert Jordan and Crew. Gold Panning Championships requires a lot of organizing and Robert Jordan and Ron Gribble will again be looking for timers, we must have 12 timers going at all times. Check in for helping here. Mucking out practice tubs will be included and will need cleaning out on an "as needed" basis. Head Salter – Ron Gribble, will receive help from Brian Bartholomew and Ed Ebbitt Jr. Fill the Buckets - We will need people to help fill the buckets with Gravel and hope that Rich Hussey can help. Check with Robert, Ron, Ed or Brian when you get there. Main Judges – Steve Larson and Mike Matus will do this important job. They will need to have help with posting and moving the panners through. Karen Bartholomew did the posting last year with perfect timing. We hope Karen will return again this year. Head Judge – Merle Litzsinger we hope will be with us this year also. Merle is the Master at this job! Gold Panning Championship Registration: Jean Hussey will be doing this job with help from Cyndy Burchard. I appreciate them helping out here more than they know! Thank you Jean and Cyndy! Raffle Booth: Our "Raffle Lady" Anne Brown will be on duty with the help of Maureen “Mo” & Mike Price, myself along with many other “helpers” from Goldhounds. Check in with Anne, Annie or Maureen when you get there. Membership-Information, selling DVD tapes and raffle tickets; Annie, Anne or Maureen can help here, with Cyndy and Jean helping on Sunday. To Goldhound Ladies - when you come in please check with us at the front of our Goldhound booth. Metal Detecting – This still has to be covered with Mike Bowers. Maybe Jerry Culver can be here to help answer questions on the art of Metal Detecting. We will send an email with info when we know! Teaching of Gold Panning – We are hoping Sam & Henerittta Markley will help check the little ones in, along with Ray Dodds “Ambassador to Gold Miners” Also help from Barbara & Charlie Brown. This area can get really busy, especially on Sunday! Help where you can. Maybe Scott Carrington can get some good pictures here? Thanks Scott for your pictures and help with the Club newsletter. Barbara and Joe Cardoza- Goldhound Retired Paparazzi – Joe Cardoza, our ”Famous Artist” will be taking pictures of the event only when he is able. We are so lucky to have Joe and Barbara, please say thank you to them for their years of help. Barbara Cardoza has been my “Gold Lady” and “Go To Helper” for all these years and we cannot begin to thank them for their dedication to the Goldhounds. Joe’s pictures and Barbara’s gold panning competition will never be forgotten. We miss them at every event and always send our Love to them. Bless you Joe and Barbara. Master of Ceremonies Announcing and Music – Tom Fisher has been our announcer for several years now but has retired and we wish him a great life, good health and happiness. We will never forget you Tom and Gir for your dedication and friendship over the years. Hope to see you at the mine! Now we all know that our new President Mike Bowers takes to the microphone and runs our meetings so smoothly. We hope that Mike will be our next Master of Ceremonies & Announcer for our event! Anne Brown and I are working now on the raffle tickets and they should be out by 7/31/14. If anyone has anything to donate to the Annual Raffle, please let us know. I am searching for prizes. Our gold panning teams and participants in the World Championships in Sweden Update From Barbara Sutton No medals but a great time was had. Joel and Margie joined us along with Fuzzy’s friends, Dave & Kathy Wilson. Margie placed 7th in the Beginners Devision and found all her gold. Dave also made the Beginners finals. The rest of us made it to the Semi Finals. The USA team of Fuzzy, Joyce, Joel, Mike & Barbara had a good showing of keeping all their gold. Only 5 teams found all their gold but the slower time put us in 9th place. There were 22 or 23 countries there so 9th isn’t bad! See you in Forest Hill. Barbara THANK YOU GOLDHOUNDS FOR ALL YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT OVER THE YEARS FOR THIS GREAT CLUB. YOU ALL ARE THE REAL GOLD OF THE MOTHER LODE!
