receive Onesimus as you would receive me.”
Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost “So if you consider me your partner, receive Onesimus as you would receive me.” —Paul, writing to Philemon (v. 17) 1225 E. Morehead Street — Charlotte, NC 28204 704-372-7317 — www.ascensioncharlotte.org New Here? Welcome! You are welcome here! We especially extend a warm and welcoming embrace to our visitors and guests who may be without a church home. We hope you can remain after the service long enough to engage in fellowship with others. We would like to acknowledge your presence with us today, and so we ask that you either fill out the Red Book found at the end of your pew, or scan the QR code with your smartphone and fill out our online worship attendance form. To fully participate in today’s worship service, you will need this worship folder (“bulletin”) and one or both hymnals, found in the pew rack: the burgundy Lutheran Service Book, or the blue With One Voice book. Throughout the service, the assembly speaks the words in this bulletin which are printed in bold font. Holy Communion will be celebrated during this morning’s worship service; please familiarize yourself with the information about how we celebrate Holy Communion, located inside of the red attendance book. Restrooms are located adjacent to the carpeted narthex area. As you exit the sanctuary, turn left and follow the signs. The Church Nursery, for children ages 3 and under, is located across the hallway from the restrooms. A Baby Changing Table is available in the accessible restroom. Activity Bags for children to borrow during the service are hanging on the wall next to the restrooms. Those who require an Assistive Listening Device may obtain one from the sound desk in the rear of the sanctuary. We invite you to check in and tag us on social media! AscensionCharlotte AscensionCharlotte 2 @ALCCharlotte Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 4, 2016 + G AT H ERI NG + Pre-Service Music “Take My Life and Let It Be” 1 Welcome & Announcements The assembly stands. Invocation Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Assembly: Amen. Opening Song “We Come to Your Feast” We turn and face the cross as it processes into the sanctuary. 2 Confession & Absolution P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we have put on Christ, and bear the seal of Him whose death and resurrection has won us victory over the grave. It is with contrite hearts that we seek God’s forgiveness, mercy, and compassion. The assembly sits or kneels. 3 P: Let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of one another. A: Gracious God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against You by our thoughts, words, and actions: the things we have done, and the things we ought to have done. Even though Christ has been raised from the dead, too often we ignore this precious gift of salvation and choose the ways of the world rather than Your mercy and love. Forgive us for this, and lead us into the ways that You would have us live: loving one another, serving Your Kingdom, and trusting in Your mercy and grace. P: Even when we were dead in our sins, God loved us and made us alive, together with Christ. It is by grace you have been saved, and by which your sins are forgiven. Go, and sin no more. As an ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I declare to you the entire forgiveness of your sins in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. A: Amen. The assembly stands. Hymn of Praise — Lutheran Service Book No. 947 “All Glory Be to God on High” Prayer of the Day L: The Lord be with you. A: And also with you. L: Let us pray. O merciful Lord, You did not spare Your only Son but delivered Him up for us all. Grant us courage and strength to take up the cross and follow Him, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. A: Amen. 4 The assembly sits. The 11:00 AM service continues on page 8. The 8:30 AM service continues with the service of Holy Baptism. + HOLY BAP T ISM + JACIE MARIE TIMM Born October 17, 2015 Brian & Jasmine Timm, parents Jamil Martin, sponsor Baptism Hymn – With One Voice No. 770 “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry” All children are invited to come forward and sit around the font to witness the baptism. P: In Holy Baptism our gracious heavenly Father liberates us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; in the waters of Baptism we are reborn children of God and inheritors of eternal life. By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the Church which is the body of Christ. As we live with Him and with His people, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. In Christian love, you have presented this child for Holy Baptism. You should, therefore, faithfully bring her to the services of God's house, and teach her in the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments. As she grows in years, you should place in her hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for her instruction in the Christian faith, that, living in the covenant of her Baptism and in communion with the Church, she may lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ. Do you promise to fulfill these obligations? Parents & Sponsor: I do. 5 P: Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: We give You thanks, for in the beginning Your Spirit moved over the waters and You created heaven and earth. By the gift of water, You nourish and sustain us and all living things. By the waters of the flood You condemned the wicked and saved those whom You had chosen, Noah and his family. You led Israel by the pillar of cloud and fire through the sea, out of slavery into the freedom of the promised land. In the waters of the Jordan your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Spirit. By the baptism of His own death and resurrection Your beloved Son has set us free from the bondage to sin and death, and has opened the way to the joy and freedom of everlasting life. He made water a sign of the kingdom and of cleansing and rebirth. In obedience to His command, we make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Pour out Your Holy Spirit, so that those who are here baptized may be given new life. Wash away the sin of all those who are cleansed by this water and bring them forth as inheritors of your glorious kingdom. To You be given praise and honor and worship through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. A: Amen. P: I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we baptize. Do you renounce all the forces of evil, the devil, and all his empty promises? Parents & Sponsor: I do. P: Do you believe in God the Father? A: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? A: I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On 6 the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? A: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. P: Jacie Marie Timm, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we give you thanks for freeing your sons and daughters from the power of sin and for raising them up to a new life through this holy sacrament. Pour your Holy Spirit upon Jacie: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in Your presence. A: Amen. P: Jacie, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. The baptismal candle is lit. Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. We pray: O God, the giver of all life, look with kindness upon the mother and father of this child. Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have given them. Make them teachers and examples of righteousness for this child. Strengthen them in their own Baptism so they may share eternally with her the salvation you have given her, through Jesus Christ our Lord. A: Amen. 7 L: Through Baptism, God has made this new daughter a member of the priesthood we all share in Christ Jesus, that we may proclaim the praise of God and bear His creative and redeeming Word to all the world. A: We welcome you into the Lord's family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, a child of the same heavenly Father, and a worker with us in the kingdom of God. If you When Israel chose the Lord, they obey the commandments of the chose life. The law, the Lord, and Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your life are bound together. “Life” in this context refers to all that makes God, by walking in his ways, and life rich, full, and productive—just by keeping his commandments as God created it to be. and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he 8 is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.” This is the Word of the Lord. A: Thanks be to God. Psalm 1 Second Lesson – Philemon 1-21 (ESV) R: Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved fellow worker and Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I 9 thank my God always when I Philemon’s slave Onesimus remember you in my prayers, because I had stolen from Philemon hear of your love and of the faith that and had run away. Paul you have toward the Lord Jesus and for pleads that Philemon accept all the saints, and I pray that the Onesimus as a Christian sharing of your faith may become brother. Onesimus had met effective for the full knowledge of every Paul and, through Paul’s good thing that is in us for the sake of ministry, became a Christian. Christ. For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you. Accordingly, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what is required, yet for love's sake I prefer to appeal to you—I, Paul, an old man and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus— I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I became in my imprisonment. (Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.) I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart. I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel, but I preferred to do nothing without your consent in order that your goodness might not be by compulsion but of your own accord. For this perhaps is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, no longer as a bondservant but more than a bondservant, as a beloved brother—especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me. If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it—to say nothing of your owing me even your own self. Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. At the same time, prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping that through your prayers I will be graciously given to you. Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings 10 to you, and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. This is the Word of the Lord. A: Thanks be to God. The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel. Alleluia — Lutheran Service Book No. 952 Holy Gospel – Luke 14:25-35 (ESV) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fourteenth chapter. A: Glory to You, O Lord. P: Now great crowds accompanied Jesus, Jesus did not want a blind, and he turned and said to them, “If naive commitment that anyone comes to me and does not hate expected only blessings. As a his own father and mother and wife builder estimates costs or a and children and brothers and sisters, king evaluates military yes, and even his own life, he cannot strength, so a person must be my disciple. Whoever does not bear consider what Jesus expects his own cross and come after me of His followers. cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how 11 shall its saltiness be restored? It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” This is the Gospel of the Lord. A: Praise to You, O Christ. The assembly sits.
