Those Serving the Servants Today
First Lutheran is a community, a gathering of people of
diverse ages, cultures and traditions.
Just as Jesus opened himself to all and, by implication,
opened the reign of God to all, so we, the members of
First Lutheran seek to do the same.
Therefore, all are welcome here regardless of their race,
gender or sexual orientation; regardless of their social,
economic, educational, linguistic or relationship status;
regardless of their citizenship, religious or cultural
background or makeup of their family; and regardless of
their physical, mental, emotional or spiritual condition.
There is a place for you in our community worship,
service and life.
To our Visitors: Welcome! You are invited to sign our
guest book in the Narthex (lobby) and join us for coffee
and conversation downstairs after worship, where our
friendly congregants will meet and greet you.

A special welcome to worshippers who are unable to be
physically present and are joining us online for today’s
service.
First Lutheran is easily accessible via major city routes
- 41st Avenue and Kingsway – and Bus #41 runs west
from the Joyce Street Skytrain station. Ample parking is
available in a lot just west of the church and on the
church side of the two streets--Wales Street and 42nd
Avenue. The wheelchair entrance is also the office
entrance on 42nd Avenue.
For your convenience, there is an elevator in the
southwest corner of the building, fully accessible
washrooms on the main floor in the northwest corner
and two washrooms down the stairs at the east end of the
lower level. A childcare play area is on the lower level.
The present building, erected in 1957, is the third in our
history. Founded by Scandinavian fishermen, First
Lutheran is tied closely to the history of Vancouver.
Our logo reflects our ethnic and Christian roots, our
West Coast location as well as the varied people and
cultures which enrich our life and ministry together.

Holy Communion, Setting Seven
Worshippers may wish to light a votive candle in memory of a loved one or for meditation. This may be done at any
time before or during the liturgy except during community prayers, readings or homily. Since the number of candles
is limited and to avoid mishaps, parents and caregivers are asked to be attentive when allowing children to light one.
INTRODUCTION
Jesus does great deeds of power and gives his disciples authority over demons. Yet none of this power is unilateral; it
all must be received by faith. Jesus asks his disciples to go out without money or supplies, so that they will be
dependent on how others receive them. When we are sent from the assembly to witness and to heal, we are asked to
be vulnerable, to be dependent on the reception of others. The Spirit always operates in the between: between Jesus
and his Abba, between Jesus and us, between you and me, between us and those to whom we are sent.

GATHERING HYMN
# 669 “Rise Up, O Saints of God!”
GREETING
From God our Creator and the Lord Jesus Christ, grace and peace be with you all.
And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray. God of the covenantal faithfulness and love, in our baptism you call us to proclaim
the coming of your kingdom. Give us the courage you gave the apostles, that we may offer
ourselves to faithfully witness your love and peace in every circumstance of life, by the grace of
Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. Amen.
WORD
CHILDREN’S MESSAGE
FIRST READING: Ezekiel 2:1–5
In 597 B.C., the priest Ezekiel was removed into exile in Babylon. While there, he received a vision of God appearing
majestically on a chariot throne. Today's reading recounts God's commissioning of Ezekiel during this vision. The
prophet is to speak God's word to a people unwilling to hear.
3
He said to me: O mortal, stand up on your feet, and I will speak with you. 2And when he spoke
to me, a spirit entered into me and set me on my feet; and I heard him speaking to me. 3He said
to me, Mortal, I am sending you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels who have rebelled
against me; they and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this very day. 4The
descendants are impudent and stubborn. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them,
"Thus says the Lord GOD." 5Whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious
house), they shall know that there has been a prophet among them.
Response after the reading: Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God.
PSALM 123 (read responsively; congregation reads the bold)
Translated by Nan C. Merrill
To you I lift up my spirit,
You, who are enthroned in every heart!
For, as the young child holds tightly the hand of its parent,
As those in the throes of disease look to one who brings comfort,
So our spirits seek the Heart of Love,
that we might find mercy and forgiveness.
Have mercy on us, O Compassionate One,
have mercy, that we might turn from our blind and ignorant ways.
Too long our souls have been veiled by fear and illusion.
Have mercy, lead us to the path of wholeness,
that we may know that abiding Peace of the Beloved.
SECOND READING: 2 Corinthians 12:2–10
Christians do not boast of their own accomplishments. Rather, Christian boasting focuses attention on how the power
of Christ is present in our lives, especially in times of weakness and vulnerability. No matter what our circumstances
in life, Christ's grace is sufficient for us.
2
I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven — whether
in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. 3And I know that such a person —
whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows — 4was caught up into
Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat.
5
On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my
weaknesses. 6But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth.
But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from
me, 7even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from
being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep
me from being too elated. 8Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me,
9
but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness." So, I
will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
4
10
Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for
the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.
Response after the reading: Holy Word, Holy Wisdom. Thanks be to God.
p. 179
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
GOSPEL: Mark 6:1–13
At home and abroad, Jesus and his disciples encounter resistance as they seek to proclaim God's word and relieve
affliction.
Response after announcement: Glory to you, O God.
He left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2On the sabbath
he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said,
"Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds
of power are being done by his hands! 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of
James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?" And they took
offense at him. 4Then Jesus said to them, "Prophets are not without honor, except in their
hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house." 5And he could do no deed of
power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. 6And he was
amazed at their unbelief.
Then he went about among the villages teaching. 7He called the twelve and began to
send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8He ordered them
to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; 9but
to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. 10He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house,
stay there until you leave the place. 11If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear
you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them." 12So
they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. 13They cast out many demons, and
anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.
Response to conclusion: Praise to you, O Christ.

“Welcoming Home” Retreat
Rivendell, Bowen Island,
Sept 11-13, 2015
Needing a time of rest before the busy fall season begins?
Looking for a place of peace and quiet away from the noise,
distractions and pressures of the city, in a picturesque environment?
Join us for a retreat at the beautiful Rivendell Retreat Centre
on Bowen Island, where you will have time to explore the forest paths,
and also explore your earthly rest in God…
Pr Lori-Anne will gently lead a time of spiritual renewal on
“Welcoming Home,” welcoming who you are,
welcoming God’s home within you,
and welcoming your home in God.
There will be structured times of prayer and rest,
but no compulsion to follow any agenda than the one you need…
The retreat formally begins with dinner on Friday, Sept 11,
and closes with check-out by noon on Sunday, Sept 13.
Sign up early, as a maximum of 22 people can attend.
Cost includes ferry trip ($12) and shared vehicle cost ($35),
low food cost (under $50) for all meals
from Friday evening-Sunday lunch,
and as much as you are able to pay Rivendell per day
(income tax receipts given on request for more than $60/day).
Please contact Pr Lori-Anne if you are in need of financial assistance…
Bring your banners, signs, and noise-makers! Join the Metro Vancouver Alliance (MVA)
and the Living Wage for Families Campaign on the steps of City Hall to show support for
Vancouver becoming a living wage city.
At last year's MVA’s Municipal Election Accountability Assembly, all municipal party
leaders committed to developing a plan to make the City of Vancouver a Living Wage
employer for all directly and indirectly employed staff. On July 8, Vancouver Mayor
Robertson will honour his commitment by introducing a motion to begin the process of
making Vancouver a living wage city.
We invite you to come along and bring your leaders, members, neighbours and friends to rally
in support of this vital policy change.
The rally will happen on July 8, 2015 from 9-10 AM at Vancouver City Hall (453 W 12th
Ave). For more information, visit the event page http://www.metvanalliance.org/
rally_for_the_living_wage
Why a living wage? Vancouver has the second-highest child-poverty rate among Canada’s 20
largest urban centres. One third of those poor children live in families with at least one adult
working full time, all year round. Every member of the community is affected by low-wage
poverty.
Centering Prayer group will continue to
meet during the summer on Mondays
(except statutory holidas) at 7 pm in the
sanctuary of First Lutheran.
THE CUPBOARDS ARE BARE
Please help us restock our food pantry with
non-perishable food items so that we might
continue to help those in need.

16-18 October 2015 at Trinity Lutheran, Delta, BC
Pastor Paul E. Hoffman and Donna Linn, leaders
This event is designed to assist congregations in re-tooling their ministries to welcome persons into
a community of faith and prepare them for a life-long journey of discipleship beginning with
baptism. It’s modeled after the ancient catechumenal process and twenty years of spiritual renewal
at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle.
What’s a faith.forming.faith Immersion Weekend
and why should I come to one?
Every healthy congregation wants to share its greatest treasure, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Thing is, these days it’s harder and harder to do that. Many of the assumptions by which
congregations operated around “welcoming new members” in a by-gone era no longer work for
“raising up disciples” in the present.
Most men and women who come seeking something need time to raise questions, learn to know
who Jesus is and why that might matter to them, and thoughtfully prepare before plunging into
baptismal waters.
Based on 20 years of solid experience of bringing men, women, and children to the waters of
baptism and beyond through a yearlong discipleship process, this event will take participants
through the entire church year in a single weekend. Placed in small groups for Bible study and
walking the actual path of a disciple-in-formation, those who participate will not only have a rich
and satisfying time of spiritual renewal for themselves, they will return to their congregations
prepared to initiate a process of welcome and discipleship in their own communities.
For: Pastors/Rostered Leaders, Laypersons, Students
Date: Friday, 16 Oct 5pm-9pm, Saturday 9am-9pm, Sunday, 18 Oct 9am-3pm

The registration includes all training, materials, and six meals across the course of the weekend. It
is imperative to the integrity of the training that participants attend the entire event. Travel to and
lodging in/near Delta are for each participant to arrange. Thank you to B.C. Synod Missions
Committee for subsidizing the weekend.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Each portion of the prayers ends with these words: “Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.”
Gathered by the Holy Spirit and fed by the word, we come together as the people of God
to pray for the church, the world, and all in need. A brief silence.
Gracious God, we pray for the church throughout the world, that you guide it in all its endeavors
and inspire it to proclaim the gospel with boldness. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.
We pray for earth and sky, seas and deserts, plant and animal habitats,
that your good creation thrive and flourish. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.
We pray for leaders eager to show mercy, that your justice spreads to all nations
and that all may celebrate freedom from oppression. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.
We pray for this assembly, for those who are visiting, those who are travelling, and those
who cannot be with us today, that all experience Christ's presence and peace.
Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.
We pray for those who live with chronic pain or disease that leaves no outward sign,
for those who grieve, and for all those who are sick or hospitalized especially...
Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.
We remember with gratitude the saints, who lived this life with Christ, especially...
Uphold us also with your all-sufficient grace until we join them at the heavenly banquet.
Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.
Into your hands, loving God, we commend all for whom we pray,
trusting in the grace of Jesus our Saviour. Amen.
