At noon today, the Holy Father Francis appeared at the window of his
study in the Vatican Apostolic Palace to pray the Angelus with the faithful
gathered in St. Peter's Square. Before the Marian prayer he recalled Jesus'
most incisive words: “whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” He then asked: “but what
does it mean 'to lose one's life for Jesus' cause'? This can happen in two
ways: by explicitly confessing the faith or implicitly defending truth. The
martyrs are the best example of losing one's life for Christ. In two thousand years an immense host of men and women have sacrificed their
lives to remain faithful to Jesus Christ and his Gospel. And today, in many
parts of the world, there are … so many martyrs who give their lives for
Christ, who are brought to death for not denying Jesus Christ. This is our
Church.”
Today we have more martyrs than in the first centuries! But there is also
the daily martyrdom, which doesn't result in death but is also a 'losing of
one's life' for Christ: doing one's duty with love, according to the logic of
Jesus, the logic of giving and sacrifice. Think how many fathers and mothers put their faith into practice every day, offering their lives for the good
of the family! … How many priests, brothers, and sisters generously carry
out their service for the Kingdom of God. How many young people give
up their own interests to dedicate themselves to children, the disabled,
the elderly... These too are martyrs! Everyday martyrs, martyrs of everyday life! And there are many people, Christians and non-Christians, who
'lose their own life' for the truth. Christ said 'I am the truth', so those who
serve the truth serve Christ.
The Holy Father recalled how St. John the Baptist devoted himself entirely to God and, in the end, died for the truth. “How many people pay dearly
for their commitment to the truth! How many righteous men and women
prefer to go against the current so as to not deny the voice of their conscience, the voice of truth! Righteous people, who are unafraid of going
against
the
current!
And
we
must
not
be
afraid!”
Before concluding, the Pope addressed the young persons present, telling
them: “Don't be afraid to go against the current, when they want to steal
our hope, when they propose rotten values to us, values like food that has
gone bad—and when food has gone bad it makes us sick, these values
make us sick. We have to go against the current! And you, young people,
be the first: Go against the grain and be proud of going against the grain.
Go on, be brave and go against the current! And be proud of doing it!”

Reflection
The Gospels offer us encouragement this week
because they are so filled with imperfect people
struggling to live out their lives. The invitation
to us this week comes from the heart of Jesus to
ours: “Follow me.” How do we open our hearts more fully
to that invitation? In our daily prayer we can name the desires we are looking for and ask Jesus to help.

YOUNG ADULTS FOR CHRIST
(YA4C)
St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica has a group for
young adults between 18 to 35 years of age.
The purpose of the group is to bring young adults together
in order to deepen their faith in Christ through prayer, dialogue and discussion, and also to socialize.
Since September 2012, this group of young adults
for Christ has been gathering the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of
every month for two hours beginning at 3:00 p.m. The
group is called Young Adults for Christ (YA4C). All
young adults are invited to join. The next meetings will be
held on Saturday, July 13 and 27, August 10 and 24. If you

The St. Vincent de Paul Society will be accepting the following items for our neighbours in
need on Bundle Sunday, September 29 after
the morning Masses. Please start your collection
of small items of furniture, clothing and footwear and
household items for this collection and set them aside for
us.
PLEASE NOTE: We are not able to accept large items
such as couches and tables (which are always in demand)
on Bundle Sunday. Larger items may be picked up from
your home by the SSVP truck (free of charge) by calling
519.438.7071 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

Happy Canada Day! Tomorrow we pray, as we do everyday, in gratitude for the gift of being able to call home a country
that allows us to live in freedom and with democracy. Of course,
we are not perfect. That’s why we are called to grow in prayer,
asking God to guide us in working together for harmony, peace
and respect for life at all stages. We ask God to guide those who
govern us to work for the good of everyone and that we will be
generous in sharing our gifts as we place ourselves at the service
of others, especially those who find themselves most in need.
May we never take for granted the beauty of our land and the diversity found among Canadians. Please come and join us for
Mass on Monday at 10:00 a.m.
Our choirs take a well-deserved break during the summer
months. Thank you to our singers, instrumentalists and our leaders, Gloria Gassi, Ron Fox and Ana Matijevic for supporting our
liturgies—both parish and diocesan—with ministry that leads us
to pray through our singing.
I’m happy to welcome Mitch Lenko to the role of Business Administrator of St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica Parish. Mitch
is no stranger to the task, having served in that capacity before.
His conscientious work will continue among us.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB)
and the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and
Peace (CCODP) are launching a joint campaign to raise emergency aid for Syrian refugees. The revenues collected will assist the
extensive work in the Middle East by Catholic charities and development agencies. More information was not possible at the time
of printing this bulletin, but will be made available when it does
come. If any donations are received marked “Syrian Relief”, they
will be forwarded to the Diocese of London for distribution to the
appropriate agencies.
Our bulletin printing schedule will be reduced for the
summer months. The next edition will be during the first week of
August. If there is anything urgent that needs to be communicated
immediately, announcements will be made at all the Masses. Intentions for the daily Masses will be posted weekly on the bulletin
board.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to his disciples who are
travelling with him. We, too, travel with him on the roads we
walk everyday. We don’t just follow him from a comfortable pew
on Sunday. Occasionally, the road is easy. Sometimes it requires
personal sacrifice. Sometimes I’d like to bargain what my form of
discipleship might be, but I can’t. That’s not possible if Jesus
travels with us. I can’t lay out any conditions. What has it cost
me to be a disciple of Jesus? Has the sacrifice been worth it?
What am I hearing God calling me to do?
Summer has officially begun. While not everyone gets a
chance for vacation, it is an opportunity to accomplish many tasks
we’ve put off during the year because there was no time. Now
school is out and there are fewer community meetings. There will
be some time to catch up on things. Summer is a good time as
well to catch up on our prayer. It can be a time to develop a method of reflecting on the experiences of life. This needs a slower
pace and, if worked on over the quiet months, the habit will serve
us well throughout the hectic times of the year. As Father Ron
Rolheiser commented, “If certain plants do not lie dormant for
Winter, they will not bear fruit in Spring. A period of rest, within
which our roots quietly take in nourishment, is the key to
health. Like plants, we too must have periods in which we lie
fallow and silently nourish our roots...We are almost always
running, trying to catch the things that will make us happy
when, in fact, those very things are trying to catch us!”

Dan Schutte Concert/Workshop
