ADAMS WELCOME TO THE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CONCERT SERIES 2016! A s your borough president, I have the pleasure of hosting this series of free concerts here each summer at Wingate Field, sharing my passion for the arts with you and your family as well as celebrating our shared commitment to our unity as One Brooklyn. Brooklyn has always been the place to enjoy great music. We are the Brooklyn of Barry Manilow, from Williamsburg; the Notorious B.I.G., from Clinton Hill; Carole King, from Sheepshead Bay, and Aaliyah and Jay Z, from Bedford-Stuyvesant. Summer in Brooklyn offers many opportunities for fun with family and friends, like bike rides in Prospect Park or swimming in Brighton Beach. There are a number of exciting events supported by my office that I encourage you to consider, including our celebration of diversity during our 3rd Annual International Day of Friendship (IDOF) on Sunday, August 7th. Also, get ready for local restaurants showcasing their cuisines for Dine In Brooklyn, our borough’s premiere restaurant week celebrating and promoting our local foodie culture, from Thursday, August 11th to Monday, August 22nd. The wonderful community we share today was created by you, the people of Brooklyn. As your borough president, I want every family to share in the prosperity of the Brooklyn brand. We are building our neighbors and our neighborhoods with the resources to raise healthy children and families. I hope you will visit brooklynusa.org to learn more about how you could become involved in these efforts. I also want you to know that Brooklyn Borough Hall, the People’s House, remains open for you to host an event, address a community concern, or propose an idea that will advance our borough. Thank you, and let’s keep moving forward as One Brooklyn. MLK_BOOK-2016.qxp_MLK_BOOK2016.qxd 7/12/16 8:25 AM Page 2 MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CONCERT SERIES 2016 OLD SCHOOL NIGHT BIG DADDY KANE On September 10, 1968, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn gave birth to one of hip-hop's most lyrical, diverse, innovative, trendsetting MCs, now known to the world as Big Daddy Kane. This baritone-voiced, stylish-dressing MC was one of the first to bring the "playa" element to hip-hop. With several Gold albums, Kane's long career features hit songs such as "Ain't No Half Steppin" and "Raw." Kane has collaborated with many artists, such as Public Enemy and Ice Cube. Does that make Big Daddy Kane a hip-hop legend? Millions of fans worldwide seem to think so. KOOL MOE DEE Moel Dewes, better known as Kool Moe Dee, is an American hip-hop pioneer who was prominent in the 1980s and early '90s. In the late 1970s, he joined rappers Special K and L.A Sunshine, as well as DJ Easy Lee to form the influential Old School hip-hop group The Treacherous Three. With The Treacherous Three, Moe innovated and created the fast-rapping rhyme style that led to the group's first single, "The New Rap Language." His 1987 album How Ya Like Me Now included his biggest single to date, the Grammynominated, Platinum-selling "Wild, Wild West." Kool Moe Dee was the first rap recipient of the NAACP Image award, and the first rapper nominated for a Grammy. ROXANNE SHANTE Roxanne Shante has been called one of the greatest rappers ever and the first female rapper, and was the first to have a Platinum single and Gold albums. Raised in the Queensbridge Public Housing Projects, Roxanne released her first single when she was 13, the response record to "Roxanne, Roxanne" titled "Roxanne's Revenge." She has earned the title as one of the Greatest Battle MCs, has appeared at universities including Savannah State, Howard, Cheney and Hunter College, and today is one of the most sought-after keynote speakers in the country. CONCERT SERIES 2016 TANK World class service starts right in the neighborhood. National Grid is one of the largest energy companies in the world. But our commitment to being a top flight organization starts right here. One customer, one community at a time. We have a long and proud history here. And we are intent on building upon that strong legacy of service in downstate New York and Long Island by investing more than $3 billion over the next five years in natural gas infrastructure to better meet our customers’ needs for clean energy. We proudly support the Martin Luther King*R and Seaside Concert Series. Visit us at www.nationalgrid.com and connect with us on “What does cutting edge R&B sound like in 2016?” Tank answers that question by crafting the long-awaited sequel to his influential 2007 opus, Sex, Love & Pain. That album not only provided a blueprint for the likes of Chris Brown, Trey Songz, and more, but it also debuted at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and earned a Grammy Award nomination for “Best R&B Album,” while its #1 single “Please Don’t Go” became nominated for “Best R&B Male Vocal Performance.” Following 2014’s Stronger, Tank once again captured a creative spirit that resembled the process behind his seminal third body of work. It all started with his first single “You Don’t Know” [feat. Wale]. Co-written by Eric Bellinger [Justin Bieber, Kid Ink], the track fuses a subtle trap beat with airy, open production. Meanwhile, Tank carries a smooth and soulful refrain between incendiary bars courtesy of Wale. As far as sequels go, Tank knew he had to go even bigger to make SLP2 the blockbuster audiences desired. In addition to cameos from Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men and Yo Gotti, he assembled a new West Coast anthem in the form of the Tank produced “Birthday” with a little help from Chris Brown, Problem, and Siya. He also teamed up with TGT collaborator and producer Brandon “BAM” Hodge to “help set the musical tone,” of this new project. Then, there’s “She With The S***” featuring Rich Homie Quan. As a selfprofessed “huge fan” of the original Sex, Love & Pain, the Atlanta rapper jumped at the chance to fire off a verse on the follow-up. In between crafting his albums, Tank continues to make an impact as a songwriter, leaving his mark on pop culture at large. His writing credits include songs for everybody from Jamie Foxx, Pitbull, Aaliyah, and Beyoncé to Trevor Jackson and Adrian Marcel. At the same time, he’s evolved yet again outside of music with his fitness program Stronger U and starring role on the 2015 TV One hit Born Again Virgin. It builds upon his legacy, which encompasses everything from his first two gold-certified albums—Force of Nature and One Man—and 2013’s chart-topping TGT collaboration with Tyrese and Ginuwine, Three Kings. In the end, Tank taps into something timeless with SLP2, while delivering the perfect sequel. CONCERT SERIES 2016 VP RECORDS PRESENTS REGGAE NIGHT KONSHENS Garfield Delano Spence, stage name Konshens, was born on January 11, 1985. His hits have included "Winner", "Rasta Impostor," "This Means Money", "Good Girl Gone Bad", "Gal Dem A Talk,"Realest Song", "Represent","Do Sumn", Forward" and "Gal a bubble." His 2005 single "Pon Di Corner" was a major hit in Japan, and led to a month-long tour of the country and a Japan-only album release. He made a guest appearance on Tarrus Riley's Contagious album, deejaying on "Good Girl Gone Bad", which was also released as a single. He has a large fanbase in Guyana and Europe, where his "Gal Dem Talk" single was a major hit, and he performed at Guyana's National Stadium in May 2011. His album, Real Talk, was released by Japanese label Koyashi in 2010. A second album was also announced to be released in Jamaica on Tad Dawkins' Tad's International label. Konshens also launched his own Subkonshus label in 2010, working with new acts including his brother Delus. In 2012, he released his second album Mental Maintenance. In March 2014, he became an official brand ambassador for Pepsi. ETANA In the early 2000s, singer Shauna McKenzie fully recognized the power of music and its widespread influence, especially upon the youth; that realization prompted a seismic shift in her career trajectory. She chose the name Etana, which means ‘the strong one’ in Swahili; her strength was manifested, this time around, by pursuing a musical career strictly on her own terms. From reggae and pop to rock and jazz, her musical influences are varied and though she is not one to subscribe to labels, Etana describes her brand of music as reggae soul – “It is straight from the heart, straight from the soul, straight from the people and everyday life”. A true ambassador for Reggae music and females in the music industry, she is relentless in spreading her message of "unconditional love" through positive music with the hope of uplifting her audience from any situation that render them weak or hopeless. Prepare yourself for the Etana Experience!
