He most recently played the part of Kenikie in the Theatre Company’s production of ‘Grease’. Simon and Lauren are both passionate about local Theatre and met while rehearsing for a production being staged in Oswaldtwistle . Panesh - Williams Jenny Panesh, who is one of our regular Stewards at the Hippodrome, married David Williams at the Oaks Hotel Reedley on 17th June. Jenny has been associated with Pendle Hippodrome for many years and served on the Committee of Pendle Hippodrome Youth Theatre before retiring last year. Jenny has assured us Jenny and David that married life will not change her commitment to the Theatre and she will continue to be involved at the Hippodrome. Boult - McCann Gaynor Boult married Chris McCann at Carlton House, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, Ireland on 11th June. Gaynor is a past member of both the Pendle Hippodrome Youth Theatre and Pendle Hippodrome Theatre Company. She is the daughter of Angela and Mark Boult, Angela was Pendle Hippodrome Theatre Company secretary and one of our leading ladies until she recently moved from the The Boult family with area because of work commitments. Gaynor and Chris Hindman - Bateman James Bateman has been a member of Pendle Hippodrome Youth Theatre and Pendle Hippodrome Theatre Company playing many leading roles including Thenardier in the much acclaimed Youth Theatre production of ‘Les Miserables’ and the Sergeant of Police in Colne OS’s ‘Pirates of Penzance’. He is now very much involved with many of our local dramatic Societies. He married Amy Hindman, his girlfriend of 2½ years, on the 21st May at Burnley Register Office. This was followed by an evening reception at Bashall Barn, Clitheroe. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR COUPLES The Tale of 4 Men and a Safe and some very strong elasticated trusses Now as you may know the Theatre scavengers never refuse ‘owt for nowt’. Hence one morning one of our intrepid scavengers set off with a trailer to collect a safe that we had been offered for free. The very heavy object was loaded onto the trailer by a fork lift truck and he set off on the return journey. Things were going well until the trailer had a puncture. With the heavy load of the safe the trailer was too near to the ground to use the jack to fit the spare wheel. Oh Dear! Back at the Theatre the lads of the maintenance team got a phone call for assistance, ‘bring blocks and crow bars’, and so off they set. In the meantime our intrepid driver had found that the trailer wheel had collapsed and the trailer was immoveable. Double Oh Dear! By the time the rescuers arrived, and in desperation, our driver had hatched a cunning plan, to manhandle the safe into the car. Visions of the ‘Jersey Boys’ loading a safe into the back of their car and the front of the car shooting into the air flashed before their eyes. BUT they did it anyway, using the blocks and crowbars under the trailer they pushed the safe into the back of the car. They parked the wrecked trailer on the drive of what looked like an empty house (well they hoped it was) for retrieval the next day and headed for the Theatre. BUT how do you get a ‘ten ton’ safe out of a car? Getting it in was one thing but getting it out was another! With more help and a big push they managed to get it into the Theatre yard where it was covered with a tarpaulin and left for another day. Phew! Just ask yourself. If you saw four men on a busy main road, manhandling a safe into the back of a car would you call the Police? Luckily for our ‘Lads’ no one did! Classic Film Nights 5 The Hippodrome’s Classic Film Nights continue to grow in popularity. Where else can you go on a Saturday night and enjoy 3 hours of classic entertainment in good company for just £5? This Autumn there are 3 films to keep us amused and some short interesting snippets and quizzes compiled by our resident film buff Martin Cleaver to remind us of our youth and our heritage. On 17th September the Hippodrome is showing two films on the big silver screen starting at 7.30 pm. The 1967 ‘almost silent’ classic the brilliant and hilarious comedy ‘The Plank’ starring Eric Sykes, Tommy Cooper and Jimmy Edwards. This will be followed by the 1949 Ealing comedy ‘Passport to Pimlico’ with Stanley Holloway, Barbara Murray and the redoubtable Margaret Rutherford. ‘Coming to this Cinema’ on 22nd October is ‘Brassed Off’ starring Pete Postlethwaite, Ewan McGregor, Stephen Tomkinson and Tara Fitzgerald. The film was released in 1996 and tells the story of a coal mine in a northern English village which may be closing, meaning the end of the miners' brass band. It is a typically British bitter sweet comedy with some great brass band music. Tickets are £5 See page 2 for booking details or just come on the night. 6 Youth Theatre News Pendle Hippodrome Youth Theatre Awards /Continued from page 1 The first Pendle Hippodrome Youth Theatre Awards Night was held at the Theatre on 15th July in the Theatre Bar. About 35 members boarded the canal cruiser at Foulridge Wharf to sail sedately to Barnoldswick and back through the beautiful, if a little damp, tranquil Lancashire countryside whilst enjoying one of Theatre Company member Geoff Horn’s clever quizzes. An excellent meal of home-made potato pie and peas was served by the crew and ample liquid refreshments were available from the on-board bar. The Quiz was won by ‘The Fence Foursome’ aka Milly and Stuart Greenwood and Paul and Carol Jennings, who are Friends of the Hippodrome. Congratulations to the Foursome. Thanks to Martin and Geoff for an excellent evening Pendle Hippodrome Theatre is celebrating 30 years since the re-opening of the Theatre in 1986. To mark the occasion a Grand Ceilidh night will be held at Nelson Cricket Club featuring ’Frolicking Pete and the Fumbling Fingers’ on Saturday 29th October This is a party for all, Youth Theatre, Theatre Company, Theatre folk, Friends of the Hippodrome and everyone’s family and friends. Due to current regulations we replaced the original curtain several years ago. However the original mechanism was still in good working order and the old adage came into force ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it!’ Sadly it broke, not all of it, just a 6” leather cup, but how do you replace something that is over 100 years old? They don’t make em’ like that anymore. Or do they? Not easily defeated by the technicality of the one hundred year old mechanism, our very resourceful maintenance team contacted the original Company (oh the power of the internet) Hall Stage, who supplied the original fittings 100 years ago. Amazingly they are still trading and they were able to supply a new leather cup. It was soaked in neatsfoot oil for several weeks before replacing the old one and everything is once again in full working order. Here’s to the next 100 years. Hope that Hall Stage and Pendle Hippodrome are still going! COLNE COMMEMORATES THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME 9 The good people of Colne and beyond held a day of special commemoration to mark the beginning of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916 which affected so many men and families from the area. The Battle near the Somme River in France, began on 1st July 1916 and lasted until November. Over 141 days it became one of the bloodiest military battles in history. On the first day alone, the British suffered more than 57,000 casualties, and by the end of the campaign the Allies and Central Powers had lost more than 1.5 million men. Colne’s commemorations began with a Parade through the town from the Colne British Legion Club to the War Memorial in Albert Road where a short service was held. Many places throughout the Town took part in the event including The Little Our Orchestra Pit as you Theatre, The Muni and the Market Hall to name but a few. A large number of volunteers helped make have never seen it before the day a day to be proud off. The Hippodrome Theatre played its part in the commemorations and our technical staff had been very busy building a trench in the Orchestra Pit and installing pyrotechnics and sound effects to flash and bang with the sounds of war. From 11.30 am to 4.00 pm the whole Theatre shook as the noise of shells and heavy artillery pounded the trench and the smoke and fire of war rage in the Theatre’s auditorium. Our stage had become a Casualty Clearing Station complete with bell tent, where the wounded were treated, and those who would never make it back to Blighty, but lie forever in a foreign field, breathed their last breath. Every half hour throughout the day a Tommy in the trench told stories of the soldiers and the conditions they endured in the Trenches and a nurse in the clearing Station relayed tales of the horrific casualties of the Somme and how they nursed the wounded and dying. Hundreds of people dodged the heavy showers and came through the Hippodrome doors to see the sets our technical team had created and listen to the sombre tales of this terrible conflict. All were impressed not only by the Trench and the Casualty Clearing Station but by the Theatre itself. Some people had never ventured through the Theatre doors before but said they would definitely be back now they knew what a great place Pendle Hippodrome Theatre was. The Hippodrome Stage Transformed 10 More NEWS From Pendle Hippodrome Youth Theatre Table Top Sale Saturday 6th August Pendle Hippodrome Youth Theatre are holding a Table Top Sale on 6th August 10.00 am to 2.00 pm at Colne Ambulance Hall to raise funds for the Youth Theatre. Leisa Chadwick and family would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all the Hippodrome people who took a hike down the road to the Muni in July to help with the Charity Concert in aid of the Encephalitis Society ’Over The Rainbow’. The concert was a huge success and raised much needed funds for the Society. THANK YOU PUB PROGRESS Things are happening at the pub as we go to press and work should begin on the new roof in September. The Maintenance team thought it prudent that the scaffolding did not go up until after the ‘Blues’. The ceilings inside are being ripped out and doors are being installed in the top floor to seal off the rooms ready for the new roof work. It’s all coming along slowly but steadily! Maybe in the next issue we can report that the roof is at last ON! SUMMER CLOSE DOWN Its not too late to come along and HELP with the Summer Close Down. There’s plenty to do! Can you use a screwdriver as the seats need removing in the Theatre for the Blues and the new temporary Bottle Bar to build, also for the Blues. Plus numerous other jobs all round the Theatre. AND there’s still a big hole in the Church Yard wall etc etc etc! Give Keith a ring on 01282 605538 to see how you can help or just come along on Monday evenings (Stage Door 7.00 pm till 9.00 pm) and see any member of the maintenance team. The Hippodrome’s Fame Spreads Around The World In 2012 Pendle Hippodrome joined forces with Pendle Movie Makers and Colne Library Staff to make a biopic film of the life of Titanic Bandmaster Wallace Hartley who famously ‘played on’ as the ship sank into the icy Atlantic Ocean. One of Colne Movie Makers sons teaches in Saudi Arabia and his pupils recently did a project on the Titanic. He sent his son a copy of the Hippodrome film to help the pupils study the topic and they were thrilled. Our fame spreads around the world! It is with sadness that 11 we report the deaths of Kathleen Barker 3rd June 2016 Aged 92 years Kathleen was a Life Member of Pendle Hippodrom e Theatre Company and a Friend of the Hippodrome. Joan Eastham 25th May 2016 Aged 80 years Joan joined St John’s AO&DS as a dancer. She appeared in shows at the Palace Theatre in Nelson and once had the unfortunate experience of falling into the Orchestra pit, landing on the piano. Dorothy Jay (nee Sharp) June 2016 Aged 94 years Dorothy was one of St John’s AO&DS’s leading ladies in the 1960’s.
