OUR HISTORIC THEATER
A beautiful and unique Seattle landmark, The 5th Avenue Theatre’s breathtaking
design was inspired by ancient Imperial China’s most stunning architectural
achievements, including the magnificent Forbidden City. Built in 1926 for vaudeville
and silent pictures, The 5th Avenue Theatre reigned for decades as Seattle’s favorite
movie palace. In 1979, 43 companies and community leaders formed the non-profit
5th Avenue Theatre Association. Their goal was to restore the theater to its original
splendor. The 5th Avenue Theatre re-opened in 1980 as Seattle’s premier home for
musical theater.

Comedy High!

N
o, I’m not referring to some performing arts high
school where “Belting It Out to the Back Row”
and “Laying Them in the Aisles” are core parts of the
curriculum. The musical comedy high I’m talking about
is that intoxicating feeling that comes over you while
watching and listening to a crackerjack musical comedy
like Anything Goes. This feeling often begins with the
first brassy notes of the overture, and in the most potent
examples, it will still have you walking on air hours, days,
even weeks after the curtain has come down. Shows such
as this are true mood-altering experiences.
This vintage Cole Porter musical comes from what I call
the “Silver Age of the Broadway Musical”— that period
in the 1920s and ‘30s when the best popular songs came
from Broadway musical comedies, and girls, gags, taphappy dance numbers, and hit tunes were the crucial
ingredients for a rousing success.
Hundreds of musical comedies were produced during
those decades, but only a handful of them are still
performed today, with Anything Goes being, by far, the
prime example. This is no doubt because its authors
created a story and characters that have continued to
captivate audiences through changing times and decades.
Maybe the reason the characters are more vivid than usual
in the era of get-to-the-next-song librettos is that they were
based on real-life models. Anything Goes debuted in 1934.
Prohibition had ended the previous year, and J. Edgar
Hoover had just begun his manhunt for the revolving list
of gangsters he dubbed “Public Enemy No. 1” — ruthless
thugs like John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Baby Face
Nelson. Anything Goes features “Public Enemy No. 13” —
the hapless Moon Face Martin. And the vibrant character
of Reno Sweeney is a combination of two 1930s headlinegrabbers, the former speakeasy hostess Texas Guinan (who
greeted her guests with a hearty “Hello, suckers!”) and
the controversial saint-or-sinner evangelist Aimee Semple
McPherson. (You may have met her in our new musical
premiere Saving Aimee or when that show subsequently
moved to Broadway under the title of Scandalous.)
One of the challenges in writing lighthearted musical
comedy is finding an effective way to bring a diverse
group of people together without spending a lot of time
on tedious back story. We want the mix-ups, not the setups! The writers of Anything Goes came up with a perfect
premise — put everyone aboard a trans-Atlantic ocean
liner, a luxury setting where they have nothing to do but
get into farcical scrapes and all go a little cuckoo. And, of
course, perform some of the greatest songs ever written by
the master of sophistication, Cole Porter.
Anything Goes has never lost its luster. It’s the most
frequently revived show of the 1930s and one of the
most adaptable. The original production was a mammoth
affair: big sets, big orchestra, big cast (maybe, in truth,
too big for its fast and funny story). A pocket-sized offBroadway mounting in 1962 proved that what mattered
were the songs, the jokes, and the performers. A quarter
of a century later, another revision was commissioned by
Lincoln Center Theater, bringing the cast and band up to
an ideal size: large but not lumbering.
That version provided the basis for the dazzling
Roundabout Theatre Company’s 2011 Tony Awardwinning Broadway revival that we are now thrilled to
bring to our 5th Avenue stage. The band is warming up,
the champagne is chilled, the ship is about to set sail.

COLE PORTER’S
In 1964, shortly before his death, Cole Porter
was asked if his songs would last.“I never gave
it a thought,” he answered.“My enjoyment was in
writing them.” A wise attitude. Most popular songs last a
few weeks or a season. A lucky few live longer, then die with
the generation who first danced and made love to them.
Yet, defying the odds, some 30 or 40 of Porter’s creations are
still alive in popular culture, and dozens more are treasured
by aficionados. We encounter them in the movies, in jazz
clubs, and while waiting in line at Starbucks. They are part of
the permanent soundtrack of our lives.
Just recently, we’ve heard “Too Darn Hot” on So You Think You
Can Dance?,“Begin the Beguine” in Behind the Candelabra,
“Let’s Misbehave” in The Great Gatsby,“Always True to You
in My Fashion” on Glee,“Another Op’nin’, Another Show”
on Smash,“You Do Something to Me” in Midnight in Paris,
“Night and Day” in The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and “I Love Paris”
on House. Going back a bit, who can forget the AfricanAmerican work gang in Mel Brooks’ wickedly funny film
Blazing Saddles? Pressured by their racist white overseer to
sing one of their “typical” songs, the men on the chain gang
respond with a sarcastic close-harmony rendition of “I Get a
Kick Out of You.”
Porter tribute vocal and jazz albums continue to be best
sellers. And Porter’s two classic shows, Anything Goes and
Kiss Me, Kate, are very much alive, enchanting theatergoers
young and old in hundreds of productions every year.

Why are Porter’s songs timeless? Maybe it’s because they
picture an exquisite alternate world -- a panorama of luxury
and heartbreak, neatly summed up in one of his titles:
“Down in the Depths on the Ninetieth Floor.” Cole’s world
is rich in novelistic detail: Bendel bonnets, educated fleas,
the pants on a Roxy usher, the Kinsey Report, a trip to the
moon on gossamer wings, the kling-kling bird on the dividivi tree, Mister Fritz (who’s full of Schlitz), Professor Munch
(who ate his wife and divorced his lunch). At a time when
most songwriters delivered the mundane and the easily
understood, Porter created an enticing fantasy verging on
alt-fiction. It’s recognizably our Earth, and yet not quite.
Porter blends high and low elements with the abandon of a
mad scientist mixing chemicals just to see what happens.
“You’re a Nathan panning; you’re Bishop Manning; you’re
broccoli!” Even if we’ve forgotten the acerbic drama critic
George Jean Nathan or the lofty Episcopal Bishop William
Manning, we get the point and the formula still makes us
laugh.
Porter’s songs were written for a wide range of characters:
society wives on the prowl, comic gangsters, super-rich
“debu-tramps,” narcissistic actors, brash night club singers,
and clueless cocktail-party chatterers (“Have you heard? It’s
in the stars. Next July we collide with Mars!”“Well, did you
evah! What a swell party this is!”)
Unlike the dramatically integrated song-scenes of Rodgers
& Hammerstein and their followers, nearly all of Porter’s
songs are written in the voice of Mr. Porter himself —
amused, cynical, gay (in all senses of the word), and
often devastatingly sad. Love, according to Cole, is carnal
and invasive (“under my skin,”“under the hide of me”),
nocturnal, a dream doomed to fade “like the moon growing
dim on the rim of the hill, in the chill still of the night.”
It still is. Porter returned again and again to Subject Number
One. His frank treatment of sex can still startle us:“Love for
sale — appetizing young love for sale.”“If Mae West you like,
or me undressed you like, nobody will oppose.”“Moths in
your rugs do it — what’s the use of moth balls?”“The world
admits bears in pits do it, even Pekingeses in the Ritz do
it.” Let’s misbehave! Let’s step out! Let’s not talk about love!
Let’s do it!
Porter liked to foster the illusion that he was a carefree bon
vivant who plucked his songs out of the air. In truth, he was a
tireless craftsman with a strong work ethic. And carefree? In
mid-career a riding accident crushed both his legs, leaving
him crippled and in constant pain for the rest of his life.
Toward the end of Porter’s life, when he was a virtual recluse,
his secretary would play recordings of his songs to cheer
him up. After the music stopped he would shake his head
and say,“How did I ever do it?”
Porter was a musical modernist who created his signature
sound by blending Latin dance rhythms with a heady
infusion of Jewish cantillation, over a solid foundation of
big-band swing. His melodies often begin in brooding minor
keys and twist their way to major resolutions (“Just One
of Those Things,”“So In Love,”“I Love Paris”). He dared to
expand the rigid structure of the 32-bar pop song, giving his
tunes ample time to evoke the erotic journey of a “night of
tropical splendor” (“Begin the Beguine”).
We don’t know, Mr. Porter, but we’re glad you did. Your songs
are still delightful, delicious, de-lovely. You are, now and
forever, the top!

COLE PORTER (Music & Lyrics) was born
in Peru, Indiana in 1891. He attended Yale.
In the late 1920s he gained renown for many
great songs, among them “Night and Day,”
“You’re the Top,” “Begin the Beguine” and
“I Get a Kick Out of You.” His 1930s were
highlighted by such Broadway offerings as
Anything Goes, Gay Divorce, and Jubilee.
A crippling accident in 1937 left him in
constant pain yet he continued to write
memorable scores, among them Kiss Me
Kate, Can Can and Silk Stockings. He died
in 1964.
GUY BOLTON (1884-1979) and P.G.
WODEHOUSE (1881-1975), were both
born in England. Together, with Jerome
Kern, they wrote the famed Princess
Theatre musicals. Usually, they collaborated
on the book, and Wodehouse wrote the
lyrics. Bolton, with one collaborator or
another, or on his own, had a hand in well
over 100 musicals and straight plays as
well as numerous film scripts and novels.
Wodehouse wrote 97 books, most notably
the “Jeeves” novels, and countless short
stories, articles, essays and films. In addition
to Anything Goes, their work together

CROUSE (Co-Authors of the Original Book)
The Lindsay and Crouse partnership stands
as the longest of any writers in theatrical
history. It began in 1934 when they rewrote
the libretto for Anything Goes. Their Life
With Father (1939) holds the record for the
longest-running play on Broadway. They
also wrote The Sound of Music (with Rodgers
and Hammerstein), State of the Union
(Pulitzer Prize), Call Me Madam (with Irving
Berlin), and The Great Sebastians, as well as
produced Arsenic and Old Lace. Prior to their
teaming up, Howard Lindsay (1889-1968)
was an actor, stage manager, director, and
playwright. Russel Crouse (1893-1966) was
a newspaperman, press agent, author, and
librettist.
TIMOTHY CROUSE (Co-author of the
New Book) has been a contributing editor of
Rolling Stone and the Village Voice, as well as
the Washington columnist for Esquire. He is
also an O. Henry Prize-winning short story
writer. He is the author of The Boys on the
Bus, a classic account of the role of the press
in presidential campaigns and the son of
Russel Crouse, one of the original authors of
Anything Goes.
JOHN WEIDMAN (New Book) has
written the books for a wide variety of
musicals, among them Pacific Overtures,
Assassins, and Road Show, all with scores
by Stephen Sondheim, and Contact, cocreated with director/choreographer Susan
Stroman. Since his children were preschoolers, Weidman has written for Sesame
Street, receiving more than a dozen Emmy
Awards for Outstanding Writing for a
Children’s Program. From 1999 to 2009, he
served as president of the Dramatists Guild
of America.

Kirsten deLohr Helland
This season will mark the 20th year of bringing the
wonder and joy of musical theater to school-age children
throughout the Northwest with our popular outreach
program, The 5th Avenue’s Adventure Musical Theater
Touring Company (AMT). Started in 1994, AMT is
The 5th Avenue’s longest running education outreach
program. Founding Managing Director Marilynn Sheldon
championed the program with a vision of bringing
original musicals to young students. She says, “I knew
musical theater would capture their interest and they
would love stories told through song and dance. I also
knew that AMT could be an important addition to their
educational development and do so in an entertaining
way. I never tired of watching kids watch the performance
with mesmerized interest.” The first AMT show to visit
schools was Mrs. Mortimer’s Gift. It was performed 18
times for 4,500 students in Seattle. Today AMT performs
at more than100 schools throughout the Pacific Northwest
each year, reaching roughly 45,000 students.
In addition to presenting high quality, educational
musicals, Adventure Musical Theater has another goal
aligned with the mission of The 5th Avenue Theatre: to
nurture local Northwest talent. Some of Seattle’s most
recognized performers got their start by working on
AMT shows and many have gone on to perform with
Seattle’s leading theaters and on Broadway. “Doing an
AMT performance repeatedly, day after day, teaches
actors how to tell a story and make it fresh every time,”
says Producing Director Bill Berry. He adds, “There is
no audience more honest or discerning than a roomful
of 300 second and third graders.” Seattle actors who
performed with AMT before they became known for
their professional work include Jared Michael Brown,
Taryn Darr, Kirsten deLohr Helland, Diana Huey, Naomi
Morgan, Kat Ramsburg, and Dane Stokinger. Many have
had notable careers in New York and on Broadway,
including Eric Ankrim, David Austin, Mo Brady, Louis
Hobson, Brandon Ivie, Chad Jennings, Jason Kappus,
Heath Saunders, L. Steven Taylor, and Billie Wildrick.

AMT was my first professional job. I learned
how important it is to give 110% every show
because each time you perform it, 100-600 kids
are seeing it for the first time. Bringing theater to
our schools and to kids who have never or may
never see a piece of live theatre is so important,
heart-warming and humbling. Knowing that we
can make a child smile or laugh or ask questions
is so humbling. It’s the greatest job.

The roles that I played for AMT were very diverse
and “across the board.” We were encouraged
to treat them seriously – approaching them as we
would any other role. The development process
for so many character types and in such a short
amount of time helps me to prepare for the rigors
of auditioning in NYC and LA to this day!

As a director, I learned how to economize. It taught
me that something creative that challenges your
mind can be ten times more effective and exciting
than something literal. When I watched the first
performance of an AMT show I directed and saw
an entire room of kids witnessing theater for the
first time, laughing and gasping and applauding
and yelling things at the actors (“No! Don’t go in
there!”), all of a sudden I understood why people
spend their lives teaching students through theater.
I don’t know any other time when kids are as
engaged in what they’re learning as when they’re
watching AMT. You don’t see kids laughing and
screaming at a video about long division.

I think the biggest things I learned from AMT
were adaptability and consistency. When your
stage set-up changes every show, when you’re
performing at all different hours of the day,
when your audience reactions and interactions
constantly vary, the phrase “the show must go
on” quickly takes on deeper meaning. And
doing the same show 2-3 times a day for a few
months will test and expand your ability as an
actor to present the same material in a fresh
and engaging way over and over. These things
certainly helped prepare me for the last 700
performances of Jersey Boys.

I [was in] one of the AMT tours in 2000. I
happily look back on that time of discovery, the
friendships I made, and feel grateful for the work
we did inspiring all those young people with the
increasingly rare gift of live performance. I am
so proud to be a part of this amazing program
and the legacy it has created.
AMT was my first time doing any professional
theater, and the quality of work I found myself
surrounded by immediately forced me to improve
on a daily basis. The work is fast-paced,
passionate, and energetic. One time I came down
with a horrific ear infection while on tour with
AMT. And wouldn’t you know it, but we visited my
middle school that VERY day, and I performed with
little to no hearing whatsoever. While on stage
during songs, my fellow actors bobbed their heads
to the rhythms so I could stay in tempo with each
song. Trouble is, even though I stayed in tempo, I
didn’t necessarily stay in tune. After a solo, I came
backstage, and the entire cast was on the floor
with laughter. I was so out of tune it was painful.
So much for impressing my old middle school!

DAVID CHASE (Dance Arranger) Anything
Goes is Chase’s fifth Roundabout production
and umpteenth show with Ms. Marshall.
Twenty-two other Broadway shows as music
director and/or arranger over the last 20
years. For my mother, who made me take
tap in first grade. The feet couldn’t do it,
but somehow the hands remembered the
rhythms. Music Education: Harvard biology
degree.
JOHN M. GALO (Production Stage

Dear Theatregoer,
For over 45 years, Roundabout Theatre Company has provided New York audiences with season after
season of thrilling, award-winning productions – live theatre at its best. From rarely-seen classic plays like
Harvey starring Jim Parsons to timeless musicals like Anything Goes, and even to new work like Pulitzer Prize
finalist Sons of the Prophet, Roundabout is committed to bringing high-quality productions with today’s finest
artists to each of our five stages. As a not-for-profit theatre, we are also dedicated to making these enduring
stories accessible to the largest possible audience, through extensive education and audience development
programs.
Roundabout has been producing musicals on Broadway for 20 years, including our long-running production
of Cabaret, and The Pajama Game. While you may have seen our touring production of Twelve Angry Men
many years ago, this tour marks the first time that one of our musical productions will be seen outside of
New York. I am incredibly proud of director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall’s stunning work on the Tony
Award®-winning Anything Goes, and it’s truly a joy to be able to share it with the whole country.
Anything Goes is the kind of classic musical that offers pure delight. It has some of Cole Porter’s greatest
songs (which I promise you’ll leave the theatre humming) and the most exciting dance numbers any fan of
musical theatre could ask for. It’s comedy, romance, and adventure on the high seas all wrapped into one
blissful package.
This kind of musical deserves to be seen anew and we’re happy to be able to bring you what I hope is only
your first of many great Roundabout musical productions.

EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP
DAVID ARMSTRONG (Executive Producer and Artistic
Director) Since his appointment in 2000, Armstrong has
guided The 5th Avenue to a position as one of the
nation’s leading musical theater companies, acclaimed for
both its development and production of new works and
its innovative stagings of classic musicals. As a director, he
has created memorable 5th Avenue productions of
Candide, Hello, Dolly!, Sweeney Todd, White Christmas,
Hair, Mame, A Little Night Music, The Secret Garden,
Anything Goes, Company, The Rocky Horror Show, Pippin,
Vanities, Yankee Doodle Dandy!, and Saving Aimee, which made its Broadway
debut as Scandalous under Armstrong’s direction in November 2012. Prior to
The 5th, he spent nearly 20 years as a freelance director, choreographer, and
librettist. His work has been seen in New York, Los Angeles and at many leading
regional theaters including The Kennedy Center, Ordway Center, Ford’s Theatre,
Cincinnati Playhouse, and New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. From 1990
through 1995, he served as artistic director of Cohoes Music Hall in upstate NY.
Armstrong has also written the books for the musicals The Wonder Years (winner
of seven Drama-Logue Awards), Gold Rush, and Yankee Doodle Dandy!

BERNADINE (BERNIE) C. GRIFFIN (Managing
Director) was appointed managing director in January
2010 and is responsible for the administrative,
fundraising, information services and facility operations,
as well as oversight of all activities related to the Board of
Directors. Griffin first joined the Theatre in 2002 as
director of theater advancement and development.
During her tenure, The 5th Avenue has grown from a
$10 million to a $25 million organization. She brings to
her position 30 years of fundraising and arts management experience. Prior to The 5th Avenue, she served as director of development
for the prestigious Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, as well as for The Laguna
Playhouse in Laguna Beach, California. Before moving to California, she served
at the Seattle Symphony where she is proud to have been part of the team that
built Benaroya Hall. In addition to the Symphony, Griffin worked for the Tony
Award-winning Seattle Repertory Theatre, as well as Tony Randall’s National
Actors Theatre in New York. She began her career at the University of Denver.
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Martin’s University in Lacey
Washington and is proud to have been born and raised in Walla Walla,
Washington. She is a member of the National Alliance for Musical Theater and
a board member of Seattle Rotary #4. Most recently, she served as a grants
panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts. She is married to awardwinning actor Seán G. Griffin.
BILL BERRY (Producing Director) served as The 5th
Avenue’s associate producing artistic director and casting
director from 2002 through 2009. During that time, he
directed productions of West Side Story (Seattle Times
Footlight Award), Wonderful Town (Seattle Times
Footlight Award), Wizard of Oz and Smokey Joe’s Café. He
recently made his Broadway debut as the director of the
hit musical First Date at the Longacre Theatre. Berry’s
directing work has been seen at theaters across the
country, most recently at New Jersey’s Paper Mill
Playhouse where he directed a critically acclaimed production of On the Town.
Directing highlights include Cabaret performed at The 5th Avenue Theatre, St.
Paul’s Ordway Center (Ivey Award), San Jose’s American Musical Theatre, and
Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars, as well as the smash hits First Date and
RENT at The 5th. From 2002 to 2009, he served as the producing director for
The 5th Avenue’s education and outreach programs. During that time he
significantly expanded the scope and impact of these initiatives, including
spearheading the creation of Fridays at The 5th and The 5th Avenue Awards,
honoring excellence in high school musical theater, as well as substantially
increasing the reach of the Adventure Musical Theatre Touring Company
throughout the Northwest. These programs combined now serve 60,000
students annually. He also initiated the Show Talk series, which seeks to deepen
the theater-going experience. Prior to his work at The 5th Avenue Theatre, Berry
was a freelance theater artist based in New York City.
