A free shuttle service to and from the Thomas
& Mack Center runs each night for rodeo
performances. The shuttle picks up from the
Cowboy Christmas Gift Show (one-way route
only) and every sponsored and hosted hotel,
except the El Cortez. Pick-up time to the rodeo
is 5:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m., and drop-off after the
event is 9:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m.

THE FAVORITES: None of the active world
champions in this event are in the top 5 entering
the Wrangler NFR. It might be the first time since
2004 that Luke Branquinho, Lee Graves, Dean
Gorsuch or Jason Miller won’t win a world title.
Then again, all but Graves are in the field and
could come from the back of the pack for a win.
The smart money, however, is on a fresh crop of
contenders. Trevor Knowles, Casey Martin, and
Matt Reeves will battle it out for the gold buckle.
KNOWLES SAYS: “Casey Martin is going to
be darn tough. But I better stick with the
guy whose last name starts with K and
ends with nowles. I don’t think it’s a bad
choice—he’s really been on a roll this fall.
He’ll ride Jesse, and he’s won a lot of money
on that horse at the Finals.”
THE FAVORITES:
Bobby Mote is a fourtime world champion
bareback rider, and
one of his long-stated
goals is to reach
five titles to tie Joe
Alexander and Bruce
Ford for the most wins
in the event. However,
for the past two years,
Kaycee Field (son of
legendary all-around
hand, Lewis) has
dominated in Las
Vegas. While it’s never
just a two-man race
in Vegas, this is the
closest it comes.

real strong this fall
and I think he’s
the healthiest he’s
been going into the
Wrangler NFR in a
couple of years.”

roping together until halfway through
the season, but they haven’t gone a
weekend without placing somewhere
until the last rodeo of the season.
However, Clay Tryan and Jade Corkill
are a super-team of sorts: Both have
a world title, Corkill is the defending
champion, and they come in leading the
standings. Their former partners, Kaleb
Driggers and Travis Graves, teamed up
and are second heading to the NFR.
KNOWLES SAYS: “Brandon Beers
and Jim Ross Cooper have darn
sure been on a roll. The last
weekend of the season was the
small pen, but at the Justin Boots

THE FAVORITES: Tuf Cooper is the
two-time reigning world champion in
this event and leads the field going into
the NFR. But for the past two years,
Cody Ohl has been stalking him. This
just may be the year the cagey veteran
finally overtakes the young gun. Ohl
is fearless in Vegas and his boom or
bust approach could give him his sixth
world championship. Plus, he’ll be on
the reigning PRCA/AQHA Tie-Down
Horse of the Year, Pearl. The sorrel mare
rejuvinated Ohl’s career and has been
his fountain of youth as he chases the
competition.
KNOWLES SAYS:
THE FAVORITES: Basically everyone
entered in this event has a chance. The
Wright brothers, Cody and Jesse, are
the frontrunners, but their other brother,
Jake, Wade Sundell, and Taos Muncy
could all be contenders. Jesse Wright,
however, has stepped up his game at
the Thomas & Mack the past two years,
and there’s no reason he won’t do that
again in this year.

running as good as ever. Most likely, this will boil
down to a race between her and the defending
world champion, Mary Walker. While there’s plenty
of money up for grabs in Vegas, their next-closest
competition is $30,000 behind them.

Stingray has been rock solid and she’s going
in with the lead. “

J.W. Harris is a man
among boys in bull
riding. With three
world championships
and seven previous
NFRs to his name,
he’s got more
experience than his
counterparts by far.
He’s also got more
momentum, coming
off a big win in
Omaha. The reigning
world champion,
Cody Teel, is also in
the field, as is Shane
Proctor, the 2011 world
champ, so it won’t be
a cakewalk for Harris,
but he’s in the driver’s
seat.
KNOWLES SAYS:
“J.W. Harris looks
really good. The
last weekend of the
weekend he hadn’t
placed since Reno.
The bull riding is
going to be good—
there are some
kids in there who
are fun to watch.
I think it will be
better than it has
been in the past.”

How to evaluate rodeo’s seven events.
BAREBACK RIDING
Ever ridden a jackhammer with one hand? That’s what this event has been compared to. Riders hold on to a
leather rigging that’s secured with a cinch and aim for a wild, yet controlled ride with points earned by a backand-forth spurring motion as the horse bucks.
GOLDEN RULE: As in all roughstock events, half the score comes from the animal. No touching with the
cowboy’s free hand; any illegal contact results in no score.
STEER WRESTLING
Ever had the guts to slide off a horse galloping at full speed and take down a 500-pound steer by the horns?
These guys do. Stop the clock in four seconds or less, and you’ll earn a nice check.
GOLDEN RULE: As in all timed events, the animal gets a head start. Too much horsepower too soon will break
the barrier and result in a 10-second penalty.
TEAM ROPING
Let’s play catch, partner. Two ropers, a header and a heeler, take off after a steer. After the header ropes the steer
around the horns he turns it so the heeler can rope both hind legs and complete the run. The world record is 3.3
seconds, or faster than it took to read this.
GOLDEN RULE: This event depends on two solid catches. Anything less and you don’t get paid.
SADDLE BRONC RIDING
Derived from a cowboy’s task of breaking a wild horse, this is rodeo’s classic event—just look at the PRCA logo.
Riders hold on to the rein, remain firmly seated, and try to synchronize their spurs to the movements of the
horse to achieve the highest score.
GOLDEN RULE: Riders must mark out, or hold both heels above the horse’s shoulders as the ride starts—the
same rule applies in bareback riding.
TIE-DOWN ROPING
A cowboy throws his loop and catches a calf, then dismounts, sprints to the calf, and flanks it to the ground. As
quickly as possible, he then ties any three legs together with a piggin’ string and throws his hands in the air to
stop the clock.
GOLDEN RULE: Tie fast, and tie tightly. The calf has six seconds to stay put after the run. If it breaks free, then
it’s no time (and no cash, either).
BULL RIDING
Maybe it was a bet. Maybe it was a dare. No one knows for sure which cowboy was crazy enough to ride a
bucking bull for the first time. Today, there’s a reason it’s the last event at a rodeo. The sheer excitement of
150-pound man vs. 1,500-pound beast makes this the crowd favorite, hands down.
GOLDEN RULE: Just hang on, but roughstock rules apply—hold on with one hand only. And as with all
roughstock events, style matters.

Horsepower in its truest sense. Time is the only thing that matters here, and these cowgirls and their horses have
gotten so fast that champions are often decided by hundredths of a second.
GOLDEN RULE: Don’t topple a barrel, which results in a five-second penalty.
Dynasties on dirt
This year’s NFR is a big family reunion. By Julie Mankin
Much of NASCAR’s popularity is thanks to its famous fathers and
sons—guys with names like Earnhardt and Petty. As for pro football,
the Manning brothers have the market cornered on quarterbacks, while
third-generation linebacker Clay Matthews III of the Packers is the fifth
man in his family to gain fame in the NFL.
It’s extraordinary enough when multiple family members make the big
leagues. But when they also stretch the legacy of their Hall-of-Fame parents with their own world championships? That’s downright astonishing.
In professional rodeo this season, two
sons of Hall-of-Famers are each seeking
their own third straight world titles. Utah
bareback bronc rider Kaycee Feild, 26,
can’t make his dad prouder than he did in
2011 while winning six rounds of rodeo’s
10-round Super Bowl in Las Vegas—also
setting a record for highest points scored
and most money ever earned in one event
at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo
($179,327).
Then again, Kaycee must have been impressed when, in 2000, platinum-selling
recording artist Jewel sang about his dad’s
retirement in a song she penned with her
now-retired rodeo-star husband Ty Murray: “Till We Run out of Road.” In the
mid-1980s, “Lew” Feild won five world
titles—two in bareback riding and three
in all-around.
The other headlining son living up to
his heritage is the 23-year-old tie-down
roper Tuf Cooper, who may soon match
the fame of his dad, eight-time world
champ Roy “Super Looper” Cooper.
Thirteen years ago, at 44, Roy became the
first rodeo cowboy to surpass $2 million
in earnings. In February, Tuf became the
youngest to hit $1 million.
The Feilds and Coopers boast rodeo’s
first father-son world champions in a decade, and they are two of only seven families in rodeo history who can say that. In
fact, the extended Cooper clan is easily
today’s First Family of rodeo.

and older brother Clif Cooper.
In addition to being offspring of the Super Looper,
Tuf and Clif also sport rodeo
genes through their mother,
Shari Smith Rivera. Rivera’s
father (and Clif ’s namesake),
Clifton Smith, is a threetime NFR tie-down roper.
Her daughter, Shada Norris Brazile, qualified for her
first NFR in barrel racing this
year and is married to 17time PRCA World Champion
Trevor Brazile. Shari’s brother, Stran Smith, is the 2008
world champion tie-down
roper. And her 27-year-old
nephew, Stetson Vest, is roping calves in Las Vegas for the
first time this year.
As for Roy, his father (and
Tuf ’s namesake) Tuffy Cooper won the 1950 collegiate
national championship in tiedown roping and is in the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.
His sister, Betty Gayle Cooper
Ratliff, won eight world titles
roping and is in the National
Cowgirl Hall of Fame. His
brother, Clay Tom Cooper, is a
two-time NFR tie-down roper.
And his son, Clint, 31, just
missed making his fifth NFR
this year. Clint, Clif, and Tuf
became the first set of three
brothers to rope calves together at the 2010–11 NFRs.
But that’s only half the Cooper legacy. Back in the 1950s,
Tuffy Cooper’s brother, Jimmie T., was just as talented
with a rope and had his own
Hall of Fame roping son, also
named Jimmie.
“Now that I’m a
father, I look back
and see that my
parents did a tremendous job on
the parent-coach
mentality.”
Jimmie B. Cooper, in fact,
edged his cousin Roy to win
the 1981 all-around world
championship by just $48. His
son, the third Jimmie (who
goes by Jim Ross Cooper),
is team roping this year at his
fourth NFR. When Jim and
his twin brother Jake Cooper
qualified together in 2007,
they were the first twins to
rope together in Las Vegas.
Plus, their sister Jill is married to two-time NFR header
Jimmy Tanner and competes
professionally herself.
More than 20 Coopers
have competed in rodeo. Six
of them sport the prestigious
gold buckle signifying a world
champion.
Back in 1982, Tuffy explained the phenomenon to a
reporter: “We worked hard,”
he said. “We devoted our life to
it and really worked at it.” And
whenever that didn’t happen,
he wasn’t afraid to call out his
kin.
“I told Clay Tom that just
because his name was Cooper, that wouldn’t make him
a roper,” recalls Tuffy, now 88.
“Only hard work and lots of
practice would do that.”
It’s a sentiment learned by
Clif, competing this year at his
fourth straight NFR.
“People say all the time,
‘Aw, you were born to rope,’”
he says. “But when I’m in the
box at the NFR, it’s just me
and my horse. My dad can’t
nod for me and rope for me.
I had to put in the time and
dedication. I had to sacrifice to
be here.”
He also had to overcome the
pressure that comes with being born into a dynasty. Like
the Mannings of football, the
Coopers never seem to blow
up, turn away, or burn out.
“Now that I’m a father, I
look back and see that my parents did a tremendous job on
the whole parent-coach mentality,” says Clif. “If I wanted
to rope, they wanted me to be
the best. But I knew I didn’t
have to rope.”
The clan recently founded
the Cooper Rodeo Foundation because, as Clay Tom puts
it, they’re “tryin’ to give a little
back.”
As steeped in rodeo history books as the Coopers
are, team roper Cory Petska
can do them one better. His
dad, Paul, is a three-time NFR
team roper; his mother, Gail,
is a two-time world champion
barrel racer; and his sister, Tye
Petska Green, made a trip to
Las Vegas in 1994.
“It’s pretty cool when you
think about it,” said Petska, 34
and roping at his 10th NFR.
“My entire immediate family
has been to the NFR. People
will ask me, ‘Did you always
know what you wanted to do?’
and I tell them I always knew.
I had big shoes to fill and I
knew I’d have to bear down
and work my tail off to get
there.”
Another entire family of rodeo stars is the Tryan crew of
Montana. Clay Tryan, 34, is
roping at his 12th NFR (with
Jade Corkill). Clay’s younger brother, Travis, narrowly
missed his 12th NFR as well
this year. Their father, Dennis
Tryan, made the Finals in 1984
as a heeler while their mother,
Terri Kaye Kirkland, made history by qualifying in barrel racing at the NFR alongside her
roping sons in 2003–05.
Clay won the world championship in 2005 and has
been runner-up a remarkable
three times. The boys’ younger half-brother, Brady Tryan,
24, qualified for the NFR in
2010, making the trio the first
set of three brothers to qualify
in team roping the same year.

Want more? The 2013 NFR boasts
four other descendants of world champions. Jim Ross Cooper’s roping partner, 27-year-old Brandon Beers, is the
son of 1980 world team roping champion Mike Beers. Back in ’07, Mike and
Brandon became the first father-and-son
NFR partners in two decades. And heeler
Ryan Motes, 33, is the son of 1977 world
champ David Motes. Ryan holds the
world record in team roping (3.3 seconds)
and will compete at his third NFR with
Charly Crawford.
In tie-down roping, 30-year-old Sterling Smith, the son of 1978 world
champion team roper Brad Smith, will
compete at his first NFR. His mom, Barrie (Beach), won two national collegiate
championships with her rope.
Lastly, steer wrestler Stan Branco, 27,
finally made the Big Show after finishing
16th in the world standings in both 2010
and 2011. He’s the grandson of 1965 world
champion barrel racer Sammie Thurman
Brackenbury and was named for his greatuncle Stanley Branco, who made the NFR
in 1961 with Stan’s grandpa, nine-time
NFR team roper Dan Branco.

Coopers, team ropers Riley and Brady
Minor of Washington are partners for the
seventh season, at their fourth NFR together. And in saddle bronc riding, there’s
the triple threat of Cody, Jesse, and Jake
Wright from Utah, and the Texas duo of
Jacobs and Sterling Crawley.
With nearly a dozen contestants hoping
to add a gold buckle to the family trophy
room, plenty of proud parents are focused
on the 10 upcoming days in Las Vegas. In
the meantime, fans are mulling over with
glee a possible 2031 gold-buckle battle
between Treston Brazile, now 5, and Kase
Murray, 2.
Will Brazile and Murray rope and ride
like their dads, the two greatest all-around
cowboys of all time? There’s always a
chance—as long as little Kase doesn’t inherit his mom’s voice.

The man behind it all
For the average fan taking in
one or two nights of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the
seamlessness of the production is immediately breathtaking. This isn’t your local
county punkin’ rollin’. No sir,
this production takes months
of advance planning, days of
meetings, and endless hours of
fine-tuning. The man behind
the product is Shawn Davis, a
three-time saddle bronc world
champion and ProRodeo Hall
of Fame inductee. He has shepherded each performance of
the Finals since 1986 and was
instrumental in its move from
Oklahoma City to Las Vegas.
Each day, Davis is intimately involved in many of the
details it takes to pull off the
event. In addition to the 120
contestants, there are around
650 animals, 2,000 pounds
of dirt, and 17,000 fans to
consider. Of course, the event
employs announcers, security
personnel, and secretaries, but
also under the direction of Davis are painters, a full-service
welding shop, tractor drivers,
and an administrative staff—
most of which have been with
him for years and take personal vacation time from real jobs
and ranches to come work the
NFR for 10 days.
In addition to the several
daily meetings (and countless others in the weeks and
months leading up to the
NFR) Davis personally participates in security walkthroughs, times each segment
of the event in coordination
with the live television broadcast, and handles any bumps
along the way.

Where did it come from? Roping gear
ROPE
Roping has had a
place in many cultures
throughout history:
carvings show ancient
Egyptians using rope on
a bull, the Huns used
lassos in battle to ensnare
their opponents, and the
Finns still use them today in reindeer herding.
Lassos, made of braided
thongs, were used in
Ancient Greece—the
Sagartians used them to
capture their adversaries.
Derived from the Spanish word, la reata, the
lariat, (lasso, riata, reata)
is a well-known tool of
the American cowboy,
both on the range and in
the arena, and it is most
commonly made of nylon, polyester, or a blend
of the two, though rawhide reatas are still used
by traditionalists. Cactus
Ropes is the official rope
of the PRCA and many
of the top competitors
use their products, including Trevor Brazile,
Clay O’Brien Cooper,
and Cesar de la Cruz.
SADDLE
Although evidence of
saddle use can be traced
back to the Sarmatians
of the Black Sea around
365 BC, the Moorish
saddle is the first true
precursor to today’s
Western roping saddle,
as it was the first saddle
to sport a horn and
two girths. The Moors
brought their saddle
design to the Spanish
peninsula when they
invaded in the 13th century, then Spanish colonists introduced the design to the Americas in
the 1600s. The modern
Western saddle is derived
from those of the vaqueros who worked stock in
the colonial American
Southwest and Mexico.
Today, roping saddles are
highly specialized, with
rawhide-covered wood
trees adorned with finely
tooled, high-quality
leather. In the roping
events, the horn is designed to bear the brunt
of the jerks and pulls of
550-pound bovines.
ROPING GLOVES
One of the earliest
documented cultures
to use gloves, Minoan
youths wore them while
boxing. Gloves were
also an integral part of
armor until firearms
came along and handto-hand combat became
less common. Roping
gloves provide protection against rope burns
and cuts. Made from
cotton, nylon, leather,
and even Kevlar, roping
gloves are an important
safety tool for ropers in
much the same way that
metal and leather gloves
have protected sportsmen throughout history.
You’ll notice the team
ropers use roping gloves
while the tie-down ropers do not. Tie-down
ropers’ ropes are tied to
the horn, while in team
roping, contestants rope
the animal and wrap the
rope around their saddle
horn as the animal is
moving—creating a need
for something to prevent
rope burns.
PIGGIN’ STRING
Used in the arena to
tie the feet of calves
that have been roped,
in order to keep them
down long enough to get
a time, a piggin’ string
has a long history of
helping cowboys do their
jobs. This handy piece
of rope is often found on
saddles or cowboys on
the ranch to help brand,
doctor, tie a gate closed,
or hobble a horse. It
can also be called a steer
string or hogging rope
and most are made of
either polyester or nylon.
This is the rope you’ll see
the tie-down ropers carry
in their mouths and
tucked through a belt
loop, which allows for
almost instant access.
ROPING HORSE
Athletic prowess,
strength, and confirmation are sought after in
today’s roping horse. In
team roping, head horses
must be fast to catch up
to the steer and strong
to pull it as the heeler
ropes. Heel horses, on
the other hand, must
have a strong stop. Both
horses are required to
read and react to what
the cow is doing. An
intelligent horse with a
good disposition is also
key to a roper’s success
because of the close relationship the two must
have. A tie-down roping
horse, for example, is
trained to continue
to work even after the
cowboy has dismounted.
Relied upon for several
centuries to make a cowboy’s job easier whether
in the pasture, corral, or
arena, a good horse is
worth his weight in gold.

while I’m working

keep my immune
system super strong
because I can’t afford to get sick!

I used colored hair
spray last year on

and spray-painted

That seemed to

because Brock
Hanson and I won
the round with a

DOG TAGS
I don’t cross the
street without my
“dog tags” necklace,
which amounts
to a funky silver
chain of charms.
The most meaningful to me are the
ones with my boys’
names, Lane and
Taylor, on them,
and the silver cross
that’s been hanging
from my neck since
before they were
born. This will be
my 26th year of
working the NFR,
and I do not leave
Las Vegas without
having a Mexican
food lunch with
my ProRodeo Hall
of Fame friend Leo

LONG SLEEVE
SHIRTS
I take about 20
long sleeve shirts,
which is about 10
more than I need,
really. I usually do
good wearing red,
and if I wear black,
it all starts to go
south. So I bring
black shirts to sign
autographs in, and
I try to bring red
shirts to ride in. I
do that with hats,
too. I bring a hat
that I’ve won a lot
of money in, and
I also bring a new
hat that my sponsor makes me for
the Finals.
