Highlights of the 28th National Conference on Problem Gambling The 28th National Conference on Problem Gambling was held July 11-12 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando, Florida. A collegial crowd of about 450 attendees were welcomed by the co-host Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling and its Executive Director Pat Fowler (left), and NCPG Executive Director Keith Whyte (far left). Attendees enjoyed several days of education and training for up to 30 CEU’s, professional development, networking opportunities and more, including the Highlight event at SeaWorld. Attendees came from 42 states and 7 countries: Australia, Austria, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. Main conference: 45 presentations with 77 speakers. Pre-conference in-depth training.: 12 presentations given by 29 speakers. Main Conference, July 11 and 12 John Fontana, FCCG board member and President of Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa, welcomed attendees to Florida. Judy DiCenzo, GTECH Senior Manager Corporate Communications, gave opening remarks before the keynote address from Dr. Westley Clark (above right), Director of the federal Center for Substance Abuse Treatment on The Affordable Care Act, DSM-5 and Gambling Addiction. The Friday lunch plenary was a heart- warming ceremony for NCPG’s annual National Awards (see below). On Saturday, Connie Jones (AGEM), gave opening remarks. Plenary speaker Dr. Jeffrey Derevensky (right, above) presented on 25 Years of Youth Gambling Research: What Do We Know and Should We Care? The Saturday lunch plenary was a moving presentation titled Fighting for My Life from Betty White, (right, below) who survived a loved one’s problem gambling and its horrific consequences.
