5000 Role Models Shine!
On February 12, 2016, our 5000 Role Models students attended the Keys to
Manhood conference at the Seminole Campus of St. Petersburg College. It was an
exciting day as 17 of Seminole High School’s finest attended workshops led by college
professors. In addition, they were treated to a tasty breakfast and lunch. The keynote
speaker, Chris Zorich, spoke about overcoming obstacles. In addition, students attended
seminars entitled, “How to Make an ‘A’ in Class,” “What Career is Right for Me?” and
“Let’s Not Take it There (domestic violence).” Everyone had a great time, and for many
of the students it was their first time sitting in a college classroom. We are grateful to
St. Petersburg College for the unique, enjoyable opportunity!

Summer Bridge – Seminole High School
Registration for Summer Bridge is underway
Summer Bridge programs provide engaging activities and intensive instruction over the summer to ensure that
students are prepared for maximum success when the next school year begins. Summer Bridge is especially important
for students who are performing below grade level or who need extra support to be successful.
Summer Bridge - High School Program
Summer Bridge is for students who are performing below grade level in reading or math and need extra support, or
for students who are behind in credits required for graduation and need to make up core English, science, mathematics
or social studies courses.
The program provides learning opportunities during the summer so that students will be on a stronger path to success
when the next school year begins. For information on all programs, call High School Education at (727) 588-6302.

Algebra 1 EOC Preparation
This program is for current ninth, 10th and 11th graders who have failed the spring 2015 administration of the
Algebra End of Course assessment. The program provides students with prescriptive assistance and practice to close
gaps in algebra skills or content knowledge. Students will earn a ½ credit in an Algebra 1 Credit Recovery (elective).
Credit Recovery Program
This program is for current 9-12 grade students who have failed a core academic course that is required for
graduation. Students who need to recover credits use a program called Grad Point, which allows them to make up
failed courses at their own pace, so they can get back on track to graduate.
Dates: This program begins June 8 and runs through July 14 for students in grades 9-11. Courses may run all
summer for 12th graders still seeking credits.
Algebra 1 Jumpstart
This program is for current eighth-graders who have not taken Algebra in middle school. Students will earn a ½
credit in an intensive and engaging mathematics program that will prepare them for success in high school Algebra
and set them up for success in future math courses. Students must earn four math credits and pass the Algebra End
of Course assessment to graduate with a high-school diploma. This program will help students gain skills to succeed
while they are earning high school elective credit, even before their freshman year begins!

Books
Have you ever heard the saying, “Books are better
than the movie”? Well, throughout this year, many books are
being made into a movie. Why not fight the evil government
in Allegiant? Or maybe once again dive into Rowling’s mind
with her new release called Fantastical Beasts and Where to
Find Them or even Harry Potter 8, which is the script of her
play being performed only in London this summer. The script
is being released end of July and is called The Cursed Child
where we once again enjoy the adventures of Harry Potter and
now through his son as well, Albus Severus Potter. Maybe
fantasy is not your preference, Eleanor & Park is an excellent
book about two high school students who normally would not
give each other the time of day and their relationship which
grows throughout this excellent read or John Green’s newest
novels Looking for Alaska or Let It Snow. Two next series to
be made into a movie is the Legend Series book 1 by Marie
Lu and Matched book 1 by Ally Condie. Whatever you like to
read here are some non-fiction and fiction books being made
into a movie or DVD in 2016:
• Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (Miss
Peregrine’s Peculiar Children, #1)
• Me Before You (Me Before You, #1)
• The Girl on the Train
• Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)
• The Light Between Oceans
• Matched (Book 1)
• The BFG
• Ugly Love
• A Monster Calls
• Fallen (Fallen, #1)
• Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
• Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the
Looking-Glass
• Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, #1)
• Billy Lynn’s Long Half Time Walk
Plus many, many more…
Dr. Seuss may have said it best,
“The more that you read, the more you will know
The more you know, the more places you will go.”
So whether it is in the next alien attacked world in 5th
Wave or the heaven-like world of Narnia – The Silver Chair
or making an impossible decision of who will survive and
who will not in The Finest Hour; just pick up the book first,
escape to these other worlds, and we shall join each other for
some new adventures.

Girlfriends of SHS Bring Joy to the Elderly
The Girlfriends Club of Seminole High School (Girls leadership group) were able to bring some holiday
cheer to those who rarely get to interact with youth. In December, 2015, the Girlfriends walked down to the
Oak Tree Manor Assisted Living Home and sang many holiday songs, handed out cards and visited with
the elderly. Many of our young ladies had not been introduced to how the elderly live, so this was a great
experience for both the Girlfriends and the residents.
The owner, Christine Gibree, was appreciative to the young ladies for spending time, bringing joy and
giving attention to her residents. The young ladies are also taking up the activity of writing letters to the
residents, in hopes of receiving a response from them. Ms. Gibree has an art activity that gives the residents
the assistance they need to send a response to their SHS pen pal.
Thanks to Oak Tree Manor for allowing our young ladies to interact with the elderly!
