Let’s try to find out - By Matthieu what it is all about… The UNFCCC (United Nations Framework COP 21 IMPORTANT DATA Convention on Climate Change, in French CCNUCC) was created in 1992 at the RIO de The COP 21 took place in le Bourget Janeiro Earth Summit. The goal was to fight near Paris, from the 30th of November against global warming. All the countries of the 2015 to the 11th of December 2015, 185 United Nations which are called “parties” Nations plus the European Union were participate in this convention. In 1995 the COP invited at that very important event that (Conference of the Parties) or CMP were happened only a few days after the established, the first one took place in Berlin and terrorist attacks in Paris. Of course since then all the “parties” have met every year. security was increased at its maximum Until now there have been 21 COPs and 11 alert. (30.000 police officers and 285 CMPs, and COP22 will take place in Marrakesh in security check points in all the country). Dec 2016. In the end 40.000 people attended What are the goals of these COPs? But the COP 15 minerva.unito.it wind, and no carbon at all. in Copenhagen failed because they were not able to reach an agreement. WHAT HAPPENED AT COP 21 ? The objective of COP 21 was to reach a legal agreement that would tie all the participants in order to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius of warming. These 2 degrees are, according to the scientist community, the critical threshold, which corresponds to the increase of the average temperature since the Industrial Revolution. The nations agreed in putting Year 2100 as the deadline to achieve the stabilisation of global warming, with an intensification to arrive to 1,5 degrees Celsius. Yet, we have already reached 0,85 degrees Celsius of warming since 1880, this according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change held in 2014. So it will be pretty difficult to achieve the objectives of COP 21. According to experts, it seems that the gases that have already been emitted in the atmosphere, will unfortunately block us within the 2 degrees Celsius of warming. What is the solution? We all have to reduce our emissions significantly starting today. The developed nations will have to finance and commit to sustainable development. Who is involved? Of course all the nations are involved and each individual inside of them but most precisely the largest nations which are also the largest emitters: The United States (President Obama), China (President Xi Jinping) and India (Prime Minister Narenda Modi) What is the conclusion ? A binding agreement was reached by 195 states to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. It is clear that we will all be affected by climate change in the years to come. Every day the medias make us well aware of the dangers of the warming of climate: We will suffer from more and more extreme heat waves, which will eventually lead to important droughts and large regions of our planet will become deserts in just a few decades, not to mention flash floods which will drag with them villages and crops and sadly sometimes even the populations too. It is already happening every day but this will increase in the next decades. The melting of the glaciers lead to the increase of sea levels which has obvious repercussions on the habitat and agriculture of all these people living by the seas worldwide. While some regions are inundated, others suffer from a major lack of water. The most affected by all these effects are indeed the countries belonging to the developing world but in the end it is our concern too. Even if all of this seems far from your everyday life, climate change is a matter to be taken very seriously because our planet is dying little by little. So, please, take a moment to think about it. - a binding agreement: un engagement - Greenhouse Gas : gaz à effet de serre - agreements: des accords - aware of: conscient de - the warming: le réchauffement - heat waves: des vagues de chaleur - eventually: finalement - crops: les récoltes - to lead to: mener à - the melting: la fonte - drought: sécheresse le niveau 3 - seadelevel: - a flood: une innondation la mer Image from http://www3.jjc.edu - obvious: évident - a lack: un manque - to belong to: appartenir à - a matter: (ici) une question Funny News By AnaÏs and Thitinan Norway : In underwear and by -17 degrees, he hangs on to the roof of his stolen car Awakened in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday by the noise of hiscar's engine, wich a man was attempting to steal near his home in Randesund, in southern Norway, the young 25 year old Bruce Willis, rushed outside Source : in the snow, in his underwear ! To finance the investment, 360 million euros in total, Neoen has gathered eight parteners : infrastructure funds as Acofi, Morova, Omnes or Swiss KKB. Cestas was very helpful to export for Neoen. Later Amerigo Vespuci proved that was not Asia but a "New World" and he gave his name to the American continent. In fact Christopher Columbus discovered the Caribbean islands and Amerigo Vespuci discovered all the south of America. Then, the king of France Francois I sent a sailor whose name was Jacques Cartier and he discovered Canada, and all the European countries travelled around the world, that was the time of the Great discovery. Christopher Columbus' boats Europeans imposed their religion : Christianity Christopher Columbus. The Indians thought he was a God because their religion said that their God would come from the sea. That is why they gave him a lot of gifts. Northern America was under the control of England and France, while South America was divided between Spain and Portugal. These countries needed to establish a trade exchange with their colonies and they started building harbours on the African and Asian coasts. Thus triangular trade started. Such products as coffee, cacao, cotton and silk were exported to Europe. Triangular trade resulted from the slave trade. The Europeans exchanged their products against slaves in Africa, who in their turn were traded against tropical products in America. This is how the trianglar trade started. They had to work in hard and dangerous conditions without any salary from sunrise to sunset. They were treated like animals and often beaten when they did not obey the orders. They lived in miserable conditions in overpopulated rooms. Their barracks were placed far from the master’s house due to frequent fire incidents, caused by unsafe heating. Since 1685 the salves in French colonies were managed by a so called Black code. This code set the rules for treating the slaves. In particular it described what the Master should do when the slaves did not obey or escaped from the camp. The code was meant to set clear obligations on both parties and was also meant to protect the slaves from torture or unjustified punishment, or ensure their provision after retirement. Unfortunately, these rules were barely respected by the Masters. And In 1775, the Americans colonies revolted against the king of England George III. They wanted to have their independence and on the 4th of July, 1776 they declared their independence. The King of France, Louis XIV decided to help the American soldiers and sent troops with general La Fayette. The war lasted 8 years and in 1783, the Americans got their independence and finally in 1789 the first president of the United states of America was elected. It was George Washington. So the south states, the confederate states of America, were against the end of slavery because they needed salves to works for them in their plantations. And in 1861 the confederate states led by Jefferson Davis declared war on the United States led by Abraham Lincoln. At the end of the war 600 000 soldiers had died and 500 000 were wounded. And Finally Abraham Lincoln won and in 1865 all the territories of America abolished slaveryin 1865. A lot of Americans moved to the west: it was called “manifest destiny.” But In the Rockies, there were a lot of Indians and they didn't want to leave so the Americans killed them. About 10 million Indians were killed in this war. During the industrial revolution, a lot of railways were created and the survivors were moved out of their village. That was the times of the Gold Rush, in the XIX century, and at that time, a lot of people practiced the hunting of Buffaloes: the people shot the buffaloes who were running from trains and so 6 million buffaloes were killed.
