EDITORIAL
Welcome to the second issue of this year's Derain Times! The Derain Times is the
magazine made by the Year 9 pupils in the European Section at Andre Derain Middle
School, in Chambourcy (Yvelines). The articles are entirely made and edited by the pupils,
with the help of their teacher, Mr Tabin. This magazine is free, and can be read at the
school library, as well as the seven previous issues! We publish three issues every year, at
the end of each quarter. All this would not be possible without the kindly approval of our
head, Mr Pellé. We hope you will enjoy reading this magazine, and we'll see you in June
for the last issue of the year!

in Copenhagen failed because they were
not able to reach an agreement.
WHAT HAPPENED AT COP 21 ?
The objective of COP 21 was to reach a legal agreement
that would tie all the participants in order to keep global
warming below 2 degrees Celsius of warming. These 2
degrees are, according to the scientist community, the critical
threshold, which corresponds to the increase of the average
temperature since the Industrial Revolution.
The nations agreed in putting Year 2100 as the deadline to
achieve the stabilisation of global warming, with an
intensification to arrive to 1,5 degrees Celsius.
Yet, we have already reached 0,85 degrees Celsius of
warming since 1880, this according to the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change held in 2014. So it will be pretty
difficult to achieve the objectives of COP 21. According to
experts, it seems that the gases that have already been
emitted in the atmosphere, will unfortunately block us within
the 2 degrees Celsius of warming.
What is the solution? We all have to reduce our emissions
significantly starting today.
The developed nations will have to finance and commit to
sustainable development.
Who is involved? Of course all the nations are involved and
each individual inside of them but most precisely the largest
nations which are also the largest emitters: The United
States (President Obama), China (President Xi Jinping) and
India (Prime Minister Narenda Modi)
What is the conclusion ? A binding agreement was reached
by 195 states to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

HOW DOES IT AFFECT ME ?
It is clear that we will all be affected by climate change
in the years to come. Every day the medias make us
well aware of the dangers of the warming of climate:
We will suffer from more and more extreme heat
waves, which will eventually lead to important droughts
and large regions of our planet will become deserts in
just a few decades, not to mention flash floods which
will drag with them villages and crops and sadly
sometimes even the populations too. It is already
happening every day but this will increase in the next
decades. The melting of the glaciers lead to the
increase of sea levels which has obvious
repercussions on the habitat and agriculture of all
these people living by the seas worldwide. While some
regions are inundated, others suffer from a major lack
of water. The most affected by all these effects are
indeed the countries belonging to the developing world
but in the end it is our concern too.
Even if all of this seems far from your everyday life,
climate change is a matter to be taken very seriously
because
our
planet is dying
little by little.
So,
please,
take a moment
to think about it.

Sheep help the authorities
in New Zealand
On the 22nd of January 2016, in Queenstown, New Zealand, a flock of sheep
came to the aid of authorities by stopping a car that had been on the run for
more than 90 minutes. The police was pursuing a Honda Integra after they
spot it speeding without number plates. Eventually, the police was led to the
back road of the districts by the car chase. Fortunately for the police, a flock
of more than 150 sheep was being herded along the road. It covered the
entire road, blocking the car, forced to stop in front of the sheep.
The police arrested the people who were in the car. They were 4 : three men
and a woman.

AN EXOSKELETON (for animals) :
An exoskeleton is a part of some animals, the shell. Most of the insects, invertebrates,
molluscs, crustacean have an exoskeleton.
A MOTORIZED EXOSKELETON :
A motorized exoskeleton is for :

- The people who had an accident and who are in a wheelchair. The exoskeleton helps them to walk again.
- The jobs in which you need to transport heavy things and to make movements more easily.
- The firemen could help people faster with an exoskeleton. It would help them to take things more easily, to help the
victims and to bring care more easily.
- The army, it would help the soldiers for carrying heavy things, to walk faster, longer without being tired, to walk in the
mud, in the water, to take fewer risks to die, to survive a bullet impact because the exoskeleton is in metal.
- The employees who work in a chain.
A FEW EXOSKELETONS :
The Wandercraft : The Wandercraft is a French exoskeleton for the disabled who are paralysed because most of
them had a car accident so they are in wheelchairs.
The Hercule : The Hercule is a French made exoskeleton for the army or for firemen. It can help to walk longer without
resting, to carry heavy things going from 80 to 100 kilos ! This one detects the users' movements on its own.
The firemen could save more lives and the soldiers could serve their country more efficiently.

Neoen, an SME controled by Jacques Veyrat, inaugurates a solar photovoltaic system of 260 hectares
which represents 1 million solar panels. The central was built two and a half years ago and started last
year.
Neoen used panels built by Chinese groups (Yingli, Trina Solar and Canadian Solar), but it chose French
groups for installation and electrical systems.
To finance the investment, 360 million euros in total, Neoen has gathered eight parteners : infrastructure
funds as Acofi, Morova, Omnes or Swiss KKB.
Cestas was very helpful to export for Neoen. In just two years and a half, the prices of photvoltaic
electricity still fell sharply, including France.

The history of
the United States of America
by Neven and Sevil
Discovery of America:
In the 15th century people thought the world was
flat but Christopher Columbus thought the world was round
and in 1492, Christopher Columbus left Spain for India,
because at that time India was a country with a lot of wealth.
4 moons later, he reached a continent and thought he was in
India but he had discovered a new continent. Later Amerigo
Vespuci proved that was not Asia but a "New World" and he
gave his name to the American continent. In fact Christopher
Columbus discovered the Caribbean islands and Amerigo
Vespuci discovered all the south of America. Then, the king
of France Francois I sent a sailor whose name was Jacques
Cartier and he discovered Canada, and all the European
countries travelled around the world, that was the time of the
Great discovery.
Christopher
Columbus' boats
Europeans imposed their
religion : Christianity
Christopher Columbus. The Indians thought he was
a God because their religion said that their God
would come from the sea. That is why they gave
him a lot of gifts.
Northern America was under the control of England
and France, while South America was divided between Spain
and Portugal. These countries needed to establish a trade
exchange with their colonies and they started building
harbours on the African and Asian coasts. Thus triangular trade
started. Such products as coffee, cacao, cotton and silk were
exported to Europe.
Triangular trade resulted from the slave trade. The Europeans
exchanged their products against slaves in Africa, who in their
turn were traded against tropical products in America. This is
how the trianglar trade started.

Slaves in
Africa and in boats
Needless to say, life conditions of slaves were extremely
difficult. They had to work in hard and dangerous conditions without any salary
from sunrise to sunset. They were treated like animals and often beaten when
they did not obey the orders. They lived in miserable conditions in overpopulated
rooms. Their barracks were placed far from the master’s house due to frequent
fire incidents, caused by unsafe heating. Since 1685 the salves in French colonies
were managed by a so called Black code. This code set the rules for treating the
slaves. In particular it described what the Master should do when the slaves did
not obey or escaped from the camp. The code was meant to set clear obligations
on both parties and was also meant to protect the slaves from torture or
unjustified punishment, or ensure their provision after retirement. Unfortunately,
these rules were barely respected by the Masters.

The American revolution war:
After the Seven years' war, the Kingdom of
England ran out of money so they obliged the
thirteen British colonies situated in America to pay a
lot of taxes. And In 1775, the Americans colonies
revolted against the king of England George III.
They wanted to have their independence and on the
4th of July, 1776 they declared their independence.
The King of France, Louis XIV decided to help the
American soldiers and sent troops with general La
Fayette. The war lasted 8 years and in 1783, the
Americans got their independence and finally in
1789 the first president of the United states of
America was elected. It was George Washington.

The American civil war:
The American civil war was triggered by the abolition of slavery
by Abraham Lincoln who was the 16th president of the United states of
America, during four years from 1861 to 1865. So the south states, the
confederate states of America, were against the end of slavery because
they needed salves to works for them in their plantations. And in 1861 the
confederate states led by Jefferson Davis declared war on the United
States led by Abraham Lincoln. At the end of the war 600 000 soldiers had
died and 500 000 were wounded. And Finally Abraham Lincoln won and
in 1865 all the territories of America abolished slaveryin 1865.

The American Frontier:
In 1803, the U.S.A bought the territories of Louisiana from the
French and in 1819 the U.S.A. bought the territories of Florida from
Spain. A lot of Americans moved to the west: it was called “manifest
destiny.” But In the Rockies, there were a lot of Indians and they didn't
want to leave so the Americans killed them. About 10 million Indians
were killed in this war.
During the industrial revolution, a lot of railways were created
and the survivors were moved out of their village. That was the times of
the Gold Rush, in the XIX century, and at that time, a lot of people
practiced the hunting of Buffaloes: the people shot the buffaloes who
were running from trains and so 6 million buffaloes were killed.
Finally at the end, the United States of America spread from the
Atlantic ocean to the Pacific ocean.

Movies
By Lucie and Adèle
Today we would like to talk about a lot of movies. Two movies which already came out
this month and one movie which hasn't come out but we think they are good.
The 5th Wave
Today I want to talk about a new movie:
“The 5th Wave” which came out on the 26th
of January.
It talks about an alien invasion. The aliens
want to destroy the Earth. They send four
waves each more dangerous than the
other.
Cassie (played by Chloé Grace Moretz)
and her family survive. But Sam, Cassie's
young brother, is kidnapped by the aliens.
Cassie must block the 5th wave even if she
is desperate for her brother. She has to
team up with a young man, Ben, who could
represent his last hope but she doesn't
know if she can trust him...
Will she prefer to save her young brother
or to save the Earth? Can she stay calm
with Ben?
If you want to know, let's go to the
cinema!
I think the main themes in this thriller are:

The SUPER BOWL
The Super Bowl is the biggest American Football sport event in the
USA. Each year it determines the NFL Champion. The NFL- National
Football League- is a professional American Football league which
consists of 32 teams. It is the biggest authority in American Football.
As you might already know, American Football has nothing to do with
Soccer. The game consists in a serie of «downs». Players have four
tries to run at least 10 yards and score when they reach the «end
zone» on the opposite side of the field for a touchdown.
The Super Bowl has been celebrated every year since it was first
played in 1967. Ever since then, its popularity has never stopped
growing. This year was an amazing 50th anniversary celebration. The
whole country was waiting for D.Day.
The two Teams playing were the Carolina Panthers
against the Denver Broncos. The Carolina Panthers
are a famous team known for its Quaterback, Cam
Newton. Cam is a true showman and has become
very popular among the public. The Denver Broncos
lost the Super Bowl in 2014 to the Seahawks but were
eager to win this year. Many people had said that the
Carolina Panthers would win. However others were
already betting on the Broncos ! The best way to be
sure of the outcome was to wait until D.day and enjoy
the game... The Denver Broncos finally defeated the
Carolina Panthers 24-10, and won their third Super
Bowl.
One thing is sure ! The Super Bowl is not only a sport
event. It has become a part of the American Culture. Gathering
millions of American people regardless of their origins or social
class, at the stadium, in sports bars, or at home it is considered
the most important event in the country. It is broadcast
worldwide and commercials can cost up to several million
dollars.
