Regıstration
On average, more than 2,000 new items are added to SPL’s collection per week.
Combine that with one easy-to-use, province-wide catalogue of all public libraries
in Saskatchewan and boredom can easily be a thing of the past — all you need
is a free library card!
You can get a library card at any SPL location or any public library in Saskatchewan.
Many of SPL’s programs are drop-in,
but some require registration. Here’s
what you need to know when
registering for a program.
What if I need more time?
With your library card handy, you can
renew most items twice:
• in person
• by phone at 1.855.980.SILS (7457)*
or by phoning any location
•online through My Account at
saskatoonlibrary.ca

A few important points
about renewals:
Automatic shortened loan period 14 days
• if an item has been requested by
someone else, it cannot be renewed
•overdue items can still be renewed and
this will stop further late charges
• items cannot be renewed if you have
more than $10 owing in late charges
• to renew a Special Loan DVD or video,
call 306.975.7580
Where do I return material?
You can return material to any public
library in Saskatchewan.
Special Loan DVDs and videos must be returned to
Fine Arts at Frances Morrison Central Library.
What if my public library
doesn’t have the material I
want, but another one does?
You can request most materials to be delivered
to your preferred public library location from
one easy-to-use, province-wide catalogue.
Please remember to check your due dates carefully
as loan periods vary on different items.
What do I need to register
for a program online?
(titles exceeding 5 holds)
Downloads
Loan periods and limits vary on downloadable material.
Because it automatically returns, you will never be
charged late fees.
You can borrow up to 100 items
on your card at one time.

You can borrow material with your free library card. If, however, you
owe more than $10, you will be unable to borrow until you reduce the
outstanding amount to $10 or less.
You are responsible for lost or damaged items.

•online* — have your email handy

What if a program is
already full?
If a program is full, you may be put on
a waiting list. If a space opens up and
you’ve provided an email address at
the time of registration, you will receive
a notice that you’ve been transferred
to the registered list. If you’ve not
provided an email address, library
staff will make every reasonable
attempt to notify you by phone.
Can I register multiple
people for programs?
You can register others for a program
as long as you provide their names at
the time of registration.
What’s the benefit of
providing my email address
when registering?
When you provide an email address at
the time of registration you’ll receive
email notices about your registered
program, such as:
•a registration confirmation
(any programs you have registered
for will also show up in My SPL)
•a reminder that your program is
coming up in a few days
•a notification that the program
you are registered for has been
cancelled or changed
What happens if my
registered program is
cancelled?
All library programs are subject to
change without notice. In the event
that a registered program has been
cancelled and you have provided
either an email address or a phone
number, library staff will make every
reasonable attempt to notify you
about the cancellation.

say McGavin’s!
For decades, the iconic McGavin’s sign atop its 2nd Avenue building
(now home of Earl’s) proclaimed that bread was synonymous with
McGavin’s. The bakery produced many other goodies, too, such as
the cakes seen in this display. Want a slice?

your sweet ride. Space is limited so come

storytelling events are held in Saskatchewan

Land, Connections & Generations
Look into the past at how people related to the land
and discover a land based narrative regarding a Plains
Anishinabe’s extended family over four generations. The
participants are invited to express their own stories and
discuss the value of land and relationship in an activity
based format.

Creative Animation
Doug Cuthand and Randy Morin were part of the
stop motion animation project Guardians Evolution
which was broadcast on APTN. Stop motion is an
interesting process that involves small sets and the
use of puppets as characters. Doug and Randy will
describe their work and how all the elements of this
interesting process come together to tell a story.
Momentum: Smudge;
Portia White: Think on Me
Momentum: Smudge witnesses how a group of Canadian
Aboriginal women celebrate their right to worship in the
city, their way. Portia White: Think on Me uncovers the life
and times of an African Canadian contralto who achieved
unparalleled international success at a tumultuous time.
Treading Water
In 2011, a once-in-300-years flood consumed southern
Manitoba and threatened the city of Winnipeg and
surrounding communities. Treading Water takes us on a
journey to the Lake St. Martin First Nation and explores the
political spider web that has entangled this community.

Understanding Dementia
Join educators from the Prairie Birth Collective for a
six-week birth preparedness class. Topics include childbirth
principles and history, signs and symptoms of labour,
childbirth choices, breathing and relaxation, the coach’s
role, medications, breastfeeding and postpartum, as
well as early childhood literacy.
Staff from the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan will talk
about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, warning
signs, risk factors, ways to keep your brain healthy and the
process of getting a diagnosis. They will also introduce a
new program called Minds in Motion, a community based
fitness and social activity program for people with early
symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Empty‑Handed
The Friends of the Saskatoon Public Library is a volunteer-run, non-profit
organization dedicated to advocating the library and fundraising for
non-budgetary items. In order to keep a current collection, library
locations withdraw materials on an ongoing basis. The Friends dedicate
time and effort to the sale of these materials in The Friends’ Shop. The
Shop operates through the hard work of about 50 volunteers and attracts
many patrons. The Friends donate the money raised back to Saskatoon
Public Library as part of fundraising efforts.
SPL is grateful to the Friends of the Saskatoon Public Library for their
continued support of library programs and initiatives.
