Plans have been made for a three-day Bicentennial Bash July 2-4. The Bash will include a parade, arts and crafts fair, picnic on the square, ice cream social, outhouse races, old-fashioned games, live music and performances, a 5K run, volleyball tournament, and end with Fireworks on July 4. Every day is historic in Sunbury when you step onto the quaint village square and say hello General Rosecrans. Civil War General William Stark Rosecrans, who hailed from Sunbury, sits proudly in his saddle on this magnificent, highly-detailed bronze statue. Located nearby is a tree stump that has become a wood carving of Johnny Appleseed. Johnny was said to have visited Sunbury, and there is an existing apple orchard in the area that may have grown from the seeds he dropped there. Inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, Billy Southworth was famous for winning two World Series playing for two different teams. Southworth built a home in Sunbury during his baseball days, where he lived after retiring from baseball in 1951. Now open as an historic attraction, the Myers Inn in Sunbury is no longer a place to spend the night like it was in 1820 when it served as a Stage Coach Inn. In those days, 25 cents bought a traveler a space in a bed with a couple of strangers. It was also 25 cents for a meal, and another 25 cents for a bath behind the quilt that hung close to the fireplace. A variety of famous people stayed at the Inn, including Rutherford B. Hayes, Henry Clay, William Henry Harrison, and even Buffalo Bill Cody and Annie Oakley when the Wild West Show came to town in 1911. A jewel located on Sunbury’s village square, the Myers Inn is once again open 12 to visitors. Although Eliza Myers is no longer there to serve up a meal for 25 cents, groups and clubs can make reservations at the Inn to be entertained by a home-cooked meal, tour of the museum, and historical program, which sometimes includes a guided tour of Sunbury’s quaint village square with a docent dressed in period clothing. The Myers Inn Museum exhibits historic art and artifacts, Civil War memorabilia, gift shop, and period dresses. History pageants, luncheons, teas, meetings and other events also take place at the Myers Inn. The barn next to the Inn features a blacksmith’s shop and livery stable. While you are enjoying this historic destination, take time to eat local. Have lunch at the Sunbury Grill or a huge, juicy hamburger at the Fire House Tavern. Be sure and venture from the square to check out the Glass Rooster Cannery. Plan a friend or family experience while you are there and make sure to leave with some delicious fermented, dried, or home canned products. The Dilly Beans are a yummy way to eat a vegetable. The village of Galena is located just south of Sunbury next to Hoover Reservoir. Plan to visit in August during the Galena Summer Fest. The Summer Fest takes place the same day as Sunbury’s Sizzle and Sounds, and good food and live entertainment can be enjoyed in both places. A bike path located near Galena is part of the Ohio Erie Trail, leading you about four miles south. The Hoover Scenic Trail is a half-mile walking/biking trail leading you to the Hoover Reservoir. Alum Creek State Park is also located near Galena, featuring all types of water recreation. Hogback Ridge Park has some of the biggest trees in the county and is a peaceful place to roam wooded trails and bird watch. Numerous golf courses are also located in the Sunbury Galena area. A new Tanger Outlets shopping destination is opening in summer 2016!
