Delaware is home to Ohio Wesleyan University and the birthplace of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th president of the United States. Hayes met his wife, Lucy Webb, when she was one of the first female students at Ohio Wesleyan University. A Hayes Trail through Historic Downtown Delaware brochure takes you past points of interest, including where his birthplace once stood. Each September, Delaware County celebrates its agricultural heritage with the Delaware County Fair, which also features family entertainment and world-famous harness racing. The internationally renowned Little Brown Jug, one of the jewels in the triple crown of Grand Circuit harness racing, draws over 45,000 spectators. The Little Brown Jug has the uniqueness of being the only such race of its caliber to still take place at a county fair. Rich in heritage, Delaware County has many buildings and areas listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Historic Downtown Delaware. Downtown Delaware has been designated a Preserve America Community by the White House, a Best Hometown by Ohio Magazine, and also has the distinction of being a Main Street Community. Visitors can enjoy a self-guided walking tour of Sandusky and Winter Streets, using brochures prepared by the Delaware County Historical Society. Walking tour brochures are available at the Historical Society and the Delaware County Tourism Bureau. 4 The Old Towne Hall and Myers Inn in Sunbury are also on the National Register of Historic Places. Both are located on Sunbury’s quaint village square. For a heritage exploration of the square, tour booklets can be borrowed from the Myers Inn Museum. For more history about Delaware County, plan a visit to one of the Historical Societies and explore their libraries, museums, and attractions. Historic and happening are not words you hear used together very often, but Historic Downtown Delaware is a trendy, happening place to visit. The downtown is charming with 1800’s cornices adorning most of the buildings. Delaware is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a Preserve America Community. When visitors come to Delaware they are enthused to find the downtown bustling with activity. Travelers from all over the globe visited Delaware last year. Those signing the visitor information center guestbook came from at least 19 different states and nine different countries! Here are some of the comments they wrote about Delaware: very nice area; a lovely town; friendly people; wonderful hospitality; beautiful city; love it here; enjoying our stay; and love to eat out in this town! Downtown Delaware is one of the most charming shopping and dining destinations in Ohio. Foodies enjoy the variety of dining options in Delaware and can treat their taste buds with everything from fine dining to huge juicy burgers. Small plates, scratch pizza, craft brews, and local artisan wines are also popular with visitors. Whether the crave is for American, Italian, Mexican, Asian, Cajun, or Greek cuisine, Downtown Delaware has it all going on in local non-chain restaurants. Whether it’s date night or family night, there are plenty of popular places to dine. 8 Delaware is also a great place to be inspired by the arts without maneuvering through a large metropolitan city and paying high fees to park. Delaware is home to Ohio Wesleyan University (one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the Country), the Central Ohio Symphony, a beautiful Arts Castle, the Ross Art Museum, 1916 Strand Theatre, City Arts Center, and an annual two-day Arts Festival featuring over 150 vendors. Original works of art by many talented local artists can also be purchased at local shops and galleries. Three large antique and collectible malls are located in the heart of Historic Downtown Delaware, each featuring lots of vendor booths. The malls also have many vintage items that are highly nostalgic for treasurer hunters. Like the ambiance of the historic downtown, these three malls offer a fun blast from the past experience. Garth’s, Ohio’s oldest auction house, is also located in Delaware and is recognized as one of the top auction firms in North America. Many events happen right downtown, including a Main Street Delaware First Friday each month where the shops in Delaware are open later in the evening and fun activities are planned for children. Sidewalks are alive with shoppers and diners on First Fridays. Visitors and community members also enjoy being able to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and canned and baked goods at the Saturday morning and Wednesday afternoon Farmer’s Markets that take place May-October. Delaware is also famous for the Little Brown Jug, one of the jewels in the triple crown of Grand Circuit harness 9 racing. The Little Brown Jug is a world-renowned race for three-year-old pacers, and the only such race of its caliber to still take place during a County Fair. The race track was built to be the fastest half-mile track in the world! In 2013, Actor Emilio Estavez joined racing fans between takes for his new film, Johnny Longshot. The Sunday before the Delaware County Fair, the streets of Delaware are filled with horses and marching bands. The annual All-Horse Parade is the largest non-motorized parade east of the Mississippi with over 500 animals participating in the parade. All the vehicles are horse, mule, or donkey drawn, and spectators set their chairs up early to get a good view. Sports fans enjoy coming to Delaware May-August to cheer for the Ohio Machine. The Machine is the only professional major-league lacrosse team in Ohio, and play their home games at Ohio Wesleyan University. Individual and season tickets are available. Fans often participate in various competitions for prizes on the field during time-outs and half-time, and love their team. In addition to all the great downtown fun, four lakes, two State Parks, and 11 Preservation Parks offer great opportunities for outdoor recreation. To plan your trip to Delaware, check out www.visitdelohio.com or call the Delaware County Tourism Bureau at (740) 368-4748 or 1-888-335-6446. Powell offers an eclectic shopping and dining experience. Many of the downtown shops are located in vintage homes that line the main street of Powell. There is also a nice variety of places to dine, including many locally-owned restaurants. Visitors appreciate the selection of up-scale, gourmet, casual, and family-friendly dining experiences. If you want to satisfy your sweet tooth or crave for ice cream, yummy baked goods and the best of Ohio ice cream shops are ready to please your palate. Roam around the shops in Powell and discover one-of-akind items to wear, give as a gift or use in decorating your home. An eclectic shopping experience allows shoppers to blend antiques and contemporary wares. The annual Powell Festival takes place each June, and is a favorite multi-day event, featuring children’s activities, musical performances, and fireworks enjoyed by visitors and residents. The weekly Farmer’s Market, when in season, and annual Downtown Street Markets also bring visitors to Powell. There is also plenty of opportunity for outdoor recreation in Powell, including the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay water theme park, golfing, hiking in parks and nature preserves, as well as boating and fishing on the nearby O’Shaughnessy Reservoir and Scioto River. Plan some time to shop, dine, and play in Powell. 12 Shawnee Hills Shawnee Hills is a gardener’s delight! Three garden centers featuring beautiful plants, gift items, and all your gardening needs are waiting to be explored. When finished browsing the garden centers, take time for lunch. Choose from American, Mexican, Greek, Italian, or Asian cuisine at the variety of restaurants you’ll find in the village. Lunch is also available at the historic log house on the corner which is constructed from the original log home of Civil War Veteran John Hunt Morgan. The home features three stories of quality name-brand and hand-crafted items. Take some time to get familiar with other places in the Village and then top off your day with a sweet treat from the local bakery. If you happen to hear a few big cat roars or vocalizing gibbons there is no reason to be alarmed. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is just on the other side of the Scioto River and features nearly 10,000 animals representing over 575 species from around the globe. One thing for sure, every day is Earth Day in Shawnee Hills. Wildlights photo by G. Jones, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium 1-888-DEL-OHIO | www.visitdelohio.com 13 Sunbury and galena area When visitors arrive at Sunbury’s Village Square with its tall trees, majestic Civil War statue, quaint gazebo, and copula atop the Old Towne Hall, they usually feel right at home. Though the square is a quiet and peaceful place to sit on a bench and nibble an ice cream cone, other times it is the center for major activities and events. Three holiday flea markets take place on the square Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Visitors also come for Christmas on the Square, Sunbury Sizzle and Sounds, the Country Cruise-In, and to shop for fresh produce and homemade goods at the Saturday Morning Farmer’s Market May-October. The old stagecoach inn, now the Myers Inn and Museum, sits on the southwest corner of the village square. The stagecoach inn had many famous guests in the 1800s, including prominent politicians, who gave speeches from the balcony, and Annie Oakley and Buffalo Bill when the Wild West Show performed in Sunbury in 1911. The Myers Inn currently serves as a museum and the headquarters for Civil War General William Stark Rosecrans re-enactment troops. The Inn also exhibits historic art and artifacts, a gift shop, and period dresses. History pageants, luncheons, teas, meetings, and other events take place at the Myers Inn. The Barn next to the Inn features a blacksmith’s shop and livery stable. St Rt 37 goes right past Sunbury’s village square, and it’s hard to miss the majestic statue sitting atop of a large glacier erratic. The erratic is one of the five largest in Ohio. Civil War General William Stark Rosecrans, who hailed from Sunbury, proudly sits in his saddle on this magnificent, highlydetailed bronze statue. The sight of it 14 has become a car-stopper for travelers who want to take a closer look. Visitors enjoy exploring the Myers Inn Museum, browsing the antique shops located around the square, dining at the hometown grille, or eating a big juicy burger surrounded by firehouse memorabilia. Sunbury is also home to the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial. The Memorial is the official Ohio memorial honoring Ohioans from all branches of the military who have lost their lives in the Global War on Terrorism. The nearby village of Galena hosts an annual Summer Festival. The festival takes place on the same day as Sunbury’s Sizzle and Sounds. Shuttles are provided between the towns during the festivals. If you want some fun outdoor recreation during your visit to Sunbury and Galena, nearby Alum Creek State Park offers hiking trails, water recreation, mountain biking, and bridle trails. Riders need to bring their own horse, and Alum Creek has a special campground location for horses and riders. Bird watchers can make use of their binoculars at Alum Creek, Hogback Ridge Preserve, the Mudflats Boardwalk, and other nearby places, including along the Ohio Erie Trail, a 4.7 mile bike path parallel to St Rt 3, and the .5 mile scenic Hoover Reservoir trail. Golfers can tee off on seven different golf courses in the Sunbury-Galena area. The courses offer challenges for a variety of skill levels. Sunbury’s square is just four miles east of I-71 exit #131, where hotels, gas stations, and restaurants are conveniently located for those who want to stay awhile. 15 march april Eggs, Paws & Claws,
