Kidd pulled into NAVSTA Everett the evening before picking up VIPs for a trip to Seattle for Seafair’s Fleet Week. USS Kidd takes guests to sea NAVSTA Everett Public Affairs Boy Scouts, Sea Cadets and other guests boarded the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, USS Kidd (DDG 100) for the ship’s one day voyage, Aug. 3, to Seattle’s Fleet Week festivities. Kidd arrived at Naval Station Everett the afternoon before and the next morning welcomed 156 guests who received a glimpse of what life aboard a ship is all about. The guest list included members of the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC), future Sailors of the Navy’s Delayed Entry Program (DEP), two Sea Cadet units, and a local Boy Scouts troop. “We are most excited about meeting USS Kidd’s crew and seeing what life is like out to sea,” said Sea Cadet Charles Motzer. Kidd is currently homeported in San Diego. It is the third Navy ship named after Rear Adm. Isaac C. Kidd, who was on board USS Arizona (BB 39) during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was the first American flag officer to die in World War II. Kidd deploys with Carrier Strike Group 3. For DEP Alex Van-tLeven, the journey to Seattle was his first ever aboard a naval ship. “I have toured destroyers and carriers before, but have never ridden one,” said VantLeven, While aboard Kidd, guests were able to tour spaces, talk to Sailors, and learn more about what life is like out to sea. They picked up Sea Cadets, Boy Scouts, and other VIPs for a trip to Seattle Aug. 3. They will be arriving in Seattle as part of Seafair’s Fleet Week Aug. 4-8. The Sailors got the opportunity to relax in Everett before making the trip to Seattle. “It is the fleet week picnic,” said Julie Hollatz, Liberty Recreation Assistant. “This is an annual thing we do for the ships that come in for Sea Fair.” At the barbecue they enjoyed free food, music and games. There were a few inflatable games including a Velcro wall, sports setup, and bouncy jousting. Sailors even enjoyed playing volleyball. “At first I didn’t know what to expect,” said Engineman 3rd Class Marvin Heinandez, USS Kidd (DDG 100). “But once you get out it’s actually really fun.” The event gave everyone a chance to have a good time but it also provided an opportunity for the young Sea Cadets to talk to Sailors from the Kidd about life in the Navy. “It’s a great time,” said Gas Turbine System Technician (Mechanical) 2nd Class Rick Hinkson, USS Kidd (DDG 100). “We’re having some free barbecue and educating some cadets.” The annual event was sponsored this year by the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula, Lake Washington, and Everett Navy League councils.
