The Second Collection today is for
the Retirement
Fund of Priests of
the Oakland Diocese. Let us be
generous in our
support of our
priests!
We can hear
God speaking to
us today in the
words of the father to his elder
son: “You are
with me always,
and everything I
have is yours.”
What is my response to such remarkable generosity? Do I give
joyfully and generously as God
gives to me?
Dear Friends,
Today’s second collection is a special, annual collection to help the priests of
the Diocese of Oakland in further developing the Priests’ Retirement Fund. This
is NOT the same as the collection in December which benefits sisters and priests
of religious communities throughout the nation. This Diocesan collection is a way
of showing your thanks and your support to the priests who have served in the
parishes of the Diocese of Oakland over the years, and to make available a
means of support once they have retired from active parish ministry.
The donation you make will serve as money to continue to fund the future of
our retired priests. Please be as generous as you can be to show your support
and appreciation. Pray for our priests, too!
Well, the time has finally come… I’m headed out to Michigan for my summer vacation! I will be visiting my priest friend, Father Darryl Pepin and will
be with him as he celebrates his 65th birthday (yes, he’s old, like me… but always reminds me that I am the older of the two). We will do a little touring in
“copper country” at the north tip of the Upper Peninsula, and otherwise just
enjoy some calm and quiet together. I leave on Monday, Sept. 12, and will
return on the 30th, just in time for our Parish 75th Celebration and International
Night.
So please pray for me as I will for you. God bless you.
Father Fred
Fifteen years ago, the continuing TV coverage
of the imploding twin towers of the World
Trade Center in New York was unbearable for
me, as were accounts of the crashes and destruction in Washington and the hills of Pennsylvania. The immense devastation of human
life was incomprehensible. Visiting the site in
New York some five years later reopened
searing wounds, and overwhelmed me with
immense sadness. An incursion on our soil, carefully planned and executed by foreign elements, had shattered my cherished sense of security, and provoked a
frightening sense of God’s absence.
How could my Catholic faith tradition enable me to endure this tragedy? I
knew that neither vengeance nor sweeping animosity was an option for me.
You have left us crushed . . . covered us with darkness.
We are bowed down to the ground (Psalm 44:20, 26).
O LORD of hosts, restore us;
Let your face shine upon us (Psalm 80:4).
The Psalmist cries a lament, expressing the mourning of the Israelite people,
the chosen of God, who had regarded themselves as untouchable and above reproach, now hurled into misery. The lament expresses a nation’s agony, dares to
complain against their divine protector, may even own some complicity in the misery, and finally pleads with God for deliverance.
In the midst of lamenting, the faith of Israel endured, as must ours. We are as
vulnerable as they were to the violence and hatred that seem to encircle us. Our
demand for a divine explanation goes unheeded. Yet we have learned of the selfsacrificing heroism of many, witnessing to the finest character of our nation and of
our Christian heritage. Dying for one’s friends is a sacred theme in our story, epitomized in Jesus, our Savior, and extended through centuries in the grandest and
noblest acts of men and women in all circumstances.
In 2001 we came together as one nation under God, sharing the grief, the disillusionment, and the promise to rebuild. As today we lament our honored dead and
wounded, shall we translate such agonizing emotion into a persistent pursuit of
worldwide reconciliation and peace?

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Adoration is like medicine for my soul. It
strengthens me. I'm stronger, wiser and
much more patient because of it. It rests
my soul! My initial reaction was to become a contemplative. I needed to become a contemplative before I could
become a person of good actions. This
alignment has changed my life. It's because he's there! He's in the room. Silence is part of it too, but it's the
Grace coming out from his heart. I love
that heart! It is so Sacred and true. Mary is there also doing
his will. If I stay an hour, I go home full of power, obedient
to the Lord through His grace and that holy place. Amen!

ST. MARY SCHOOL
As the new leaders of our school,
eighth grade has been busy preparing to welcome their Faith Family
members to the first gathering of the
2016-2017 school year. Students
will meet weekly to complete projects, work on activities, and discuss
topics that focus on community service, relationship building, and Catholic identity.
Reconciliation
True reconciliation is emotional, dramatic, and cleansing. When two people meet heart to heart and work
through old hurts, misunderstandings,
and careless words, cleansing tears
often flow and the encounter ends with
an embrace that fills both with the
warmth of a love too strong to fade.
The readings this weekend assure
us of this healthy release that comes
with reconciliation. They give us the
courage to reach out to someone with
whom we need to reconcile ourselves,
and give us the courage to ask for forgiveness from God, too.
In the reading from Exodus, we see
how God refuses again and again to
give up on the Israelites. Even though
they grow impatient with God and turn
to false idols, God still calls them back.
Luke’s Gospel assures us that God rejoices when we turn away from sin.
Paul’s letter to Timothy encourages us,
like Paul, to look back on our lives and
recognize where God’s patient mercy
has been shown to us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
40 Days for Life Kickoff Rally
Friday, September 16, at 7 PM
St. Mary Parish Hall,
2039 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Walnut Creek
This fall, 650,000+ people in 607 cities
across all 50 states and 32 countries will
join to witness for life and help women and
babies in their communities. 40 Days for
Life is a peaceful, prayerful vigil outside
abortion clinics, and has saved 11,796
babies and their moms from the tragedy of
abortion. The 40-Day time frame of transformation is taken from the Bible: 40 days
Noah endured the Flood, 40 days Moses
spent on Mt. Sinai, 40 days Jesus fasted in
the desert… Due to the prayer vigils of 40
Days for Life, many abortion centers have
closed down and many abortion workers
have had conversions and left the abortion
industry. Planned Parenthood said about
40 Days for Life: “We know that these
prayer vigils create barriers that deter our
patients.”
Please join us for the 40 Days for Life Kickoff Rally for the Walnut Creek campaign.
Come listen to amazing speakers who will
inspire us to intercede for the babies and
their moms at the Walnut Creek Planned
Parenthood.

"I heartily endorse the '40 Days for Life' campaign in the Diocese of Oakland. Let us join
with all the other dioceses of the U.S.A. in supporting Christ's and the Church's teaching on
the value of life from conception to natural
death.” Michael Barber, Bishop of Oakland
With summer almost behind us and
school starting, please be reminded
that all new volunteers, for both St.
Mary Parish and St. Mary School,
are required to take “Protecting
God’s Children” online training found
on https://www.virtusonline.org.
This includes volunteers who may
have been serving our parish but
have not taken the training, and volunteers serving our multiple extended ministries, such as CYO, Prayer
Groups, Choir Group, St. Vincent de
Paul, Faith Formation and Walking
With Purpose. Please call the Parish
Office or School if you have any
questions.

over to God.
Whether you're leading people in the
workplace, the home, through volunteering or friendship, come join a small group
of people who want to learn how to become servant leaders like Jesus, instead
of letting pride and fear take the stage.

room. Every other week starting Sept.
