Hey Hou-Tex…welcome to summertime in Houston! It has definitely
warmed up some. It’s time to pack away the sweaters and jackets and
break out the sun screen. If you are out for an all-day ride, remember to
make each stop a gas, sunscreen and water stop. Smear on the sun
screen and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
I just got back from a ride over to Louisiana to visit my Mom.
Normally, I just scoot down I-10, hang a left on Hwy 165 to Alexandria
and then reverse that route on the way home. This time, I had a little
time on my hands on the way home and decided to explore a new route.
Just west of Lake Charles, is the town of Sulphur. That is where I
jumped off of I-10 and took Hwy 27 south. Hwy 27 takes you thru the
town of Hackberry and to the coast.

It is obvious very soon that fishing is a huge part of the past-time and
the livelihood of the folks in that part of the state. Almost every vehicle
I saw was either towing a boat or had fishing poles hanging out of them.
From the big boats of the fishing guides, to the families parked on the
side of the road fishing out of the canals, everyone was fishing. If you
don’t like seafood, there is probably no reason to live in that area. The
route took me thru the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge and, for most of
the ride, along several canals. The kind of canals that had me
wondering just when I am going to round a curve and find an alligator
stretched across the road. Luckily, that didn’t happen, but I confess to
thinking more than once what I would do if that did happen.
The first of many bridges I crossed on this route was a draw-bridge over
the Intercoastal Waterway. And now for a lesson in building a draw
bridge. As you know, a draw bridge is designed so that a section of the
bridge raises up via a series of cables and pullies to allow ships to pass
under. As I’m sure you also know, that section can’t be made of
concrete because it would be too heavy to lift. The material of choice
HOU-TEX H.O.G. Chapter #5075

Director…………..(Cont’d.)
for that section of the bridge is grating. Yep, steel grating with big square holes that allow you
to see the water a couple of hundred feet below. Over time, that grating becomes very smooth
from continuous use. And when you are on two wheels, smooth means slippery. As in, you
can feel the rear tire of your bike wiggling a little as you ride over it. It’s probably not as bad
as it feels, but it sure gets your attention riding over it. I’m only sorry Glenda wasn’t along for
the ride, knowing how much she loves riding over bridges with grating. If you don’t believe
me, just ask her!
About 25 or 30 miles down Hwy 27, I came to Hwy 82. A left would have taken me to
Cameron. I chose to hang a right and head toward Port Arthur. For several miles, I was riding
along the coast. It reminded me a little of the Blue Water Hwy between Galveston and
Freeport. I passed a lot of houses and fishing camps along this section, all either on stilts or
dirt hauled in to raise the elevation for obvious reasons. At the Louisiana/Texas line, I crossed
another bridge that would be of interest to bridge lovers. This bridge reminded me, in height
and span, of the one on I-10 at Lake Charles, except for one thing. This is a 2 lane bridge. In
Port Arthur, Hwy 82 connects with Hwy 73 which took me to Winnie. Then it was back on
I-10 and home.
This is not the most scenic route I have ever taken, but it was a nice change from the traffic on
I-10. If you are ever headed that way and have a little time on your hands, it is worth the ride.
I am writing this with a bit of a heavy heart. This past month or so has been somewhat of a
time of loss. Because I’m a baseball fan, I was saddened by the passing of one of the best old
school coaches, Don Zimmer, and one of the greatest hitters of our time, Tony Gwynn Sr.
Much closer to home, and much more personal for all of us, our Hou-Tex family suffered loss.
One of our families lost their father and another of our families lost a precious grandbaby. And
of course, the entire motorcycle community lost a true friend with the passing of Roy Abrego,
the parts manager at San Jacinto Harley Davidson. Please continue to keep these families in
your prayers. The passing of these friends and family members serves as just another reminder
of just how precious life is, and how important it is to value each day.
As always, keep your eye on the calendar. It is loaded with opportunities to ride and enjoy the
company of our Hou-Tex family.
God Bless Our Troops and God Bless America
C’ ya on the road,

TRIBUTE TO ROY ABREGO
Roy Abrego was a Hou-Tex member, a good friend of the Chapter, and an
employee of San Jacinto H-D as Parts Manager. As many of you may already
know, Roy passed away Saturday June 14, 2014 after having a stroke.
He was 63.
Roy was hired by Joel Morris of Stubbs H-D in Houston over 12 years ago. They became the best of friends
over the years. He was Hou-Tex's dealer contact at SanJacinto H-D, and you could always see him at the
dealer functions with his huge sombrero and a great big smile.
He leaves behind his son Eric Abrego, Denille ,his daughter in law, 3 grand children, a niece, and several
cousins. A small service is being planned, along with a ride in his memory.
Roy was loved by all who knew him, and he will be greatly missed. Please say a prayer for him and his
family, and know that he has gone on the ultimate final ride for you and I. Rest in Peace Roy.
HOU-TEX PRAYER LIST
Hou-Tex currently has some members who have suffered losses or have gone
through some really difficult times lately. We would like to ask our Hou-Tex

JULY 2014
ANNOUNCEMENTS
& OTHER STUFF
 John Billings has some really cool plans for our New Members. This time on July 15th , he will
hold another Group Ride Indoctrination for our New Members in the training room at San Jacinto
H-D. This class will go over do’s and don’t’s when you are riding in a group. It is also a good
time for your questions or concerns as to what is required of you during a Hou-Tex Group Ride.
Many of you may have ridden in groups before, but everybody doesn’t always ride in the same,
safe manner. John will address all your questions. Great Class!!
 In conjunction with the Group Ride Indoctrination for New Members, John will follow up with a
ride for New Members. You will meet at the San Jacinto Monument, this time on July 20th at
1:00 pm. This is the time when John will guide you on everything you learned earlier. We want
you to feel comfortable and know what to expect on a Hou-Tex ride! Have fun!
 Don’t forget there will be another Painted Churches ride on July 26 with Brian Barry leading.
These churches are in the Plantersville area and are not the same churches as on the previous
ride. For those who had to miss the earlier ride to Shiner area, you can still have a chance to
see some extraordinary churches. You will also have lunch at Yankees Tavern! If you have not
been there, this is an experience in itself, and a really cool place. Have Fun!!
 Don’t forget the Hou-Tex Bowling Tournament in August on the 10th. This will be at a different
Armadillo Lanes from last year – this one off of Fuqua. The set up will be a little different too. We
won’t be competing against our dealerships – we will be on teams WITH them – and competing
just team against team! Should be a blast. Hope you can make it!!
 As usual – take a look at the Activities for July!! There MUST be some or all that sound good to
you. HAVE FUN and JUST RIDE!!!!
