Voor u ligt de vierde Friends of UCR nieuwsbrief.
Met deze nieuwsbrief houden we u op de hoogte
van wat er de afgelopen tijd gebeurd is binnen
het fonds, de bursalen en onze plannen voor de
toekomst.

Friends fundraising dinner
Een memorabele avond – het fundraising dinner
Hoewel alweer enige tijd geleden zou deze nieuwsbrief niet
compleet zijn zonder terugblik op die ene memorabele
avond in september. Want dankzij uw steun zijn er dit jaar
tijdens het jaarlijkse fundraising dinner een recordaantal
van maar liefst zeven beursleningen uitgedeeld. Al drie
jaar maken the Friends of UCR het samen mogelijk voor
talentvolle en ambitieuze studenten van over de hele
wereld om aan de Roosevelt te studeren en al drie jaar
vind de officiële uitreiking van de beurzen plaats tijdens
een feestelijk diner in de sfeervolle Burgerzaal. Nederlands’
zakenvrouw van het jaar 2015, Danny Hollestelle, gaf dit jaar
een inspirerende openingsspeech en interview die het begin
was van een wervelende avond met meer dan honderd
vrienden aan tafel. De uitreiking van de beursleningen
vormde daarbij als vanouds een gedenkwaardig
hoogtepunt. Dankzij de vele donaties van vrienden en de
hoofdsponsors van dit jaar, EPZ, DOW, Humares Oceanwide
en Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding ontvingen

Vroege voorjaarsborrel – 10 februari, 2016
Na een succesvolle “meet the Friends” lunch afgelopen
jaar, hebben we dit jaar besloten om de formule te
wijzigen naar “an afternoon drink with the friends”.
Op woensdag 10 februari zal Commonhouse Elliott
opnieuw als gastlocatie fungeren voor de vrienden van
UCR tijdens een informele vroege voorjaarsborrel. We
hopen dat deze namiddag een mooie voedingsbodem
zal vormen voor interessante gesprekken en verbindingen
tussen de friends en UCR studenten. Noteer ‘m dus vast in
uw agenda!
Het jaarlijkse Friends of UCR Fundraising Dinner –
31 august, 2016

Solomiya, Polina, Kevin, Elena, Roksolana, Aimah en
Magdalena deze avond hun beursleningen. Ook dit jaar
waren het de verhalen van de bursalen die voor kippenvel
zorgden wanneer zij vertelden wat de beurslening voor
hen betekent. Stuk voor stuk indrukwekkende persoonlijke
verhalen over ‘het verschil’ kunnen maken, kansen grijpen en
een voorbeeld mogen zijn voor de thuisbasis. De fundraising
avond heeft uiteindelijk meer dan € 20.000,- opgebracht
en in zijn totaliteit vertegenwoordigen de beursleningen
en het gesteunde Elliott project een waarde van € 43.500,-.
Een ontzettend mooi resultaat en wij hopen met uw steun
dat ook in de komende jaren op deze voet te kunnen
voortzetten. Nogmaals dank aan alle vrienden, sponsoren,
bursalen en gedreven vrijwilligers voor een prachtige avond!
Graag nodigen wij u uit om het Friends of UCR
Fundraising Dinner van 2016 alvast in uw agenda op te
nemen. Het diner zal wederom in de Burgerzaal van het
voormalig stadhuis van Middelburg worden gehouden
en staat gepland op woensdag 31 august, na afloop van
de opening van het academisch jaar.

Recentelijk heeft Omroep Zeeland een mooi portret
gemaakt van bursaal Solomiya Luchechko. Een mooi
verhaal waaruit Solomiya’s gedrevenheid duidelijk naar
voren kwam. Zonder schroom stelde zij zichzelf voor in het
Nederlands. Het interview terugkijken? Dat kan! Ga dan

Updates Friends bursalen
It has been two years since I came to the
Netherlands. Time flies. I don’t’ shy away from
challenges anymore. I’ve learned to face them
head on. In order to build confidence in my
Dutch speaking skills, I actively engage with the
Orde van den Prince, a society that focuses on
Dutch culture and language. Along with a small
group of students, we try to find ways to attract
young people to join the club. The members are
incredibly welcoming and supportive especially
when I try to express my ideas in Dutch. However,
this challenge pales in comparison to what I’ve
signed up for recently. Together with other
students from organizational psychology class,
I am going to conduct interviews with managers
and CEO of the WVO Zorg in Vlissingen. The goal
of the project is to increase family participation
within the institution. As consultants we are
going to communicate with people in charge,
probably in a very formal setting. So, stakes are
high, pressure is enormous and interviews are in
Dutch. Life at the UCR can be very thrilling. This
is what makes it special. For all the wonderful
experiences and constant support, I thank the
Friends of UCR.

Updates Friends bursalen
Aimah Moiz reporting here! You know, the
bit of a nutcase from Karachi, Pakistan? Oh my.
This semester has been quite busy. When I am
not spending my time scratching my head over
Physics homework or trying to wrap my head
around Abstract Algebra, I am usually busy
running from one meeting to another. You see, in
addition to becoming a mad scientist I would also
like to become an offensive journalist. I tend to
have a passion for conducting silly interviews and
instigating thought provoking discussions. These
passions of mine led me to become the Editor-inChief of the school newspaper, Tabula RASA and
the secretary of RASA’s newly set up radio station,
UCRadio. And they keep me quite busy. I once had
a string of society meetings from 12:00 to 20:00!
Also in between studying, chairing meetings,
editing articles and radio shows, giving lectures,
arranging conferences, taking interviews and
not dying I also help out the student run
Common House Elliott’s food team by making
sandwiches for hungry students and teachers and
occassionally catering at their events. So yes, I
keep busy.
Aimah Moiz
This is my third semester at UCR, and I must
say it has been a great experience so far.
I have already adjusted to living and studying
in this community and even coping with the
amount of workload required for my academics.
Currently I am deciding on the courses I want to
take next semester; I still have the opportunity
to start new tracks and as I am interested in a
lot of subjects, I find it very hard to choose! As a
Science major, I have already decided to major in
Mathematics, Cognitive Science and Life Science,
but I might take up Computer Science as well.
The first half of this semester has really been an
eye opener for me. I started to take some social
science courses (anthropology and sociology) and
they struck me with such an impression,
it had moved me to shift from a science major to
an interdepartmental major! I am very excited to
venture into this mysterious area of knowledge
which I never experienced before further. I hope to
think that this is a step forward for me in trying to
define my passion and my job in the future.
It may be thought of as a weird mix; life sciences
I am very glad that here I was able to try out and
combine different subjects I was interested in and
I believe that is the reason many indecisive young
people like me have chosen UCR.
As this semester I have been quite busy with my
academic life, unfortunately I have not been very
involved with societies so far. I am planning to
change that soon, however, as participating in
extracurricular activities is also an essential part
of the UCR experience.

and sociology, but I believe in this changing world,
perhaps such flexibility is what is needed and a key
to new possibilities. Other than this, I have been
busy going to classes, organizing sports
(as a member of the sportsco board), and having
fun with friends! I wish the best to all the friends of
UCR and can gladly let them know my life at UCR
has been great, thanks to them!
Kevin - Yong Hwan Nam
UCR is a demanding college, especially if
you’re a Science major like myself. A fall break
meant an extra week to stay at home and study
for my exams. As depressing it may sound,
I like the challenge and I like to push myself
to the limit. That is why I am here in the first
place. Currently in my second year, I admire the
amount of workload I have been able to handle
so far. UCR has made me a stronger and a better
person, and am I grateful to have the opportunity
to build my career and my future here. Living in
Bagijnof has made me a better friend. It showed
me how gezellig living with 15 other housemates
can be, even though we all come from different
backgrounds and environments. Indeed, they
have taught me new ideas that I have never
imagined possible. It’s like opening
a new window towards a completely different,
but a far better world.
Exams are piling up and paper deadlines are
approaching, but that doesn’t mean that college
life is not fun! I embrace every opportunity that I
get to enjoy and relax. My friends are always here
to back me up as well. I can say that UCR life is
wonderful!

Updates Friends Alumni
Dear Friends of UCR,
This past summer, I had the opportunity to be
an intern at the legal and contract department
of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. It was
a great learning experience and an honor to
work alongside such a talented lawyer as Mr.
Marrio Herrebout and his staff. Not only did I
learn a great deal about contract law but I also
developed an interest in shipbuilding as a result
of the numerous meetings with employees from
several departments. Currently, I am following
an Advanced LL.M in European Tax Law at the
International Tax Center (Leiden University). This
program is certainly the most challenging thing I
have ever done academically but also one that has
allowed me to grow immensely on a professional
level. Of course, none of this would have been
possible had it not been for UCR and for your
continuous support. Thank you!

Greetings from Nepal!
I decided to move back to my country for a while
a few weeks after my graduation because it had
been too long since I had seen my family. The
situation is still grim in Nepal but the attitude of
the people screams nothing but resilience.
A month after I returned home, I was recruited
to work as one of the founding teams for an
up-and-coming organization called ‘Movers and
Shakers’. The aim of the organization is to serve
as a platform for the next movers and shakers of
the Nepal. One of the aims of the organization
is to create a startup accelerator. A startup

accelerator helps startups grow and become
ready for the business world by providing crucial
trainings to entrepreneurs, connecting them to
mentors and industry experts, and providing
them with investment. We have become one of
the first accelerators in the country and the only
one with a homegrown curriculum. The exciting
part is that I have been tasked with creating
the curriculum, and it has been daunting and
rewarding at the same time. The industry experts
and mentors are loving the curriculum.

Bericht van Barbara Oomen
Waarde Friends,
Velen van u vertelden mij, na het Friends-diner in september,
dat zij zo onder de indruk waren van Aimah Moz. En terecht.
Het frêle meisje met de hoofddoek sprak in de Burgerzaal
met een ongehoorde power over wat uw steun betekent.
Voor haar, maar ook in het stoffige dorp in Pakistan waar
zij vandaan komt. Daar merkte zij van de zomer dat zij
opeens een rolmodel was geworden voor alle jonge meisjes
– het kan dus: weggaan naar een ver land, en dan na een
jaar zoveel wereldser, welbespraakter en zelfverzekerder
terugkomen. Aimah liep laatst even langs om een idee
te bespreken. Zij wil, vlak voor de Four Freedoms Awards
volgend jaar, een debat over de vrijheid van meningsuiting
organiseren. Daarbij wil zij ook graag de andere kant van
de zaak laten zien; hoezeer sommige cartoons gelovigen
kunnen kwetsen, en hoe dat voelt. Het was ook Aimah die
vlak na ‘Parijs’, als hoofdredactrice van de Tabula Rasa een
special issue uitbracht. Vol met ongeloof en verdriet, maar
ook met een door haarzelf verwoord sentiment: waarom
zoveel aandacht voor Parijs alleen, en niet voor al die
plaatsen uit haar jeugd. ‘By all means pray for Paris, but also
pray that every place in the world, regardless of you knowing
of its existence, is freed from terrorism’. Hierin ligt voor mij
de toegevoegde waarde van juist onze beursstudenten. Zij
bieden onze, vaak geprivilegieerde, Nederlandse studenten
een andere blik op de wereld. Zij hebben, vanuit hun
eigen ervaring, in Elliott, de klaslokalen of het Bagijnhof
gesprekken over de oorlog in Syrië, de positie van Rusland,
de opvang van vluchtelingen. Die vaak verhitte discussies
zijn wellicht meer vormend dan alles wat wij, docenten,
mee kunnen geven over mensenrechten of internationale
betrekkingen. Minister Bussemaker, die op 17 december de
International Human Rights Education Conference waarvoor
u allemaal bent uitgenodigd opent, zal ongetwijfeld
spreken over het belang van elkaar kennen voor iets als
mensenrechteneducatie. Mandela zei het ook al: ‘Education
is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change
the world’. In deze tijd is dit type onderwijs, met mensen van
over de hele wereld, cruciaal. U maakt dit mogelijk. Omdat
ik weet hoeveel goeds een beurs doet voor niet alleen de
student in kwestie, maar ook voor de dorpsgenoten, de
familie en de klasgenoten, zou ik u in overweging willen
geven om – zo rond de kerst – nog eens extra aan de Friends
te denken. Wij zien zoveel potentiele
Aimah’s die wij niet kunnen helpen, en
moeten nog zo vaak nee zeggen, dat ieder
extra beetje steun enorme waarde heeft.
U investeert tenslotte, in de geest van
Mandela, niet alleen in een persoon, maar
ook in wereldvrede!
