Catholic Services Appeal
Protecting God’s Children, is an important program for the Archdiocese
of Detroit.
Every parish,
every
Catholic
school,
every child benefits from this program. The program
provides for the education and training of pastoral
and school staffs as well as volunteers who work with
children, the elderly, and the disabled. They are instructed to know and recognize the early warning
signs of abuse or inappropriate relationships with
these vulnerable members of our community. The
program provides the foundation for a safe environment within the church for all children and those
who are vulnerable.
Protecting God’s Children is financed by the CSA.
The Department of Education of the Archdiocese
provides many valuable resources for our Catholic
schools and religious education programs. The Department of Education provides professional and
supervisory services to pastors and educational personnel in parishes and Catholic schools. Catholic
identity, lifelong faith formation, long-range planning
and justice and peace education are priorities. The
School Outreach Fund is coordinated through the
Department of Education.
The Department of Education of the Archdiocese
is funded by the CSA.
These are just two of the many ways that the National Shrine of the Little Flower benefits from the
CSA. Through the Archdiocese, the CSA funds provide resources and services that are beyond the
scope of any one parish on it’s own. We actually
receive far more than we give.
I encourage you to be generous in your response
to this year’s CSA Appeal.

Will You Lend Your Voice?
Can you carry a tune? Do you have an hour to come and sing during a scheduled Funeral Mass? This choir does not have additional
practice time, so the commitment is for the duration of the Mass.
For 23 years, some Shrine parishioners have been members of the
“Resurrection Choir” to sing and witness our parish care and support
during funeral Masses. Due to health changes or relocations, the size of
the group fluctuates. A telephone chain is used to notify members of
impending funerals, and those who can come, do so. On occasion,
there are two funerals scheduled for the same day, and some members will sing for
both.
Our pastoral staff is grateful for this dedicated group who lend their voices in
hymns and prayer responses on behalf of our parish community. Bereaved families
often express their gratitude for the Shrine Catholic Resurrection Choir.
Life Matters
Today, on Mother’s day, we thank all our mothers for choosing Life. We especially
ask for the intercession of St. Gerard Majella for all mothers, especially, those expectant mothers who are contemplating abortion.
“Dear Redemptorist Saint, model religious, compassionate toward suffering
Mothers, intercede for this expectant Mother. Let her not be selfish like
those who are willing to put an end to the life they bear within themselves.
Instead let her remain ever conscious that she is privileged to be the instrument through whom God brings another life into the world. Encourage her
for the good of her child and the glory of the Lord of life. Amen.”
St. Gerard was born April 23, 1725 in Muro, Italy. He died in 1755 of tuberculosis
and was canonized on December 11, 1904 by Pope Pius X. He joined the Redemptorists at the age of 23, becoming a professed lay brother in 1752. He served as sacristan, gardener, porter, infirmarian and tailor. Because of his great piety, extraordinary wisdom, and his gift of reading consciences, he was permitted to counsel communities of religious women. This humble servant of God also had the faculties of
levitation and bi-location associated with certain mystics. His charity, obedience,
and selfless service as well as his ceaseless mortification for Christ, made him the
perfect model of lay brothers. When falsely accused by a pregnant woman of being the father of her child, he retreated in silence; she later recanted and cleared
him and thus began his association as patron of all aspects of pregnancy. St.
Gerard is the patron of childbirth, children, expectant mothers, motherhood, pro-life
movement, and unborn children.

The Ascension of the Lord
The ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York,
Newark, Philadelphia, and the State of Nebraska have maintained the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord on the proper
Thursday after Easter. If you are in any of those places on
Thursday, May 17 this year, it is a Holy Day of Obligation. The
rest of the United States, including the Province of Detroit,
which is the entire State of Michigan, has transferred the Feast
of the Ascension of the Lord to the 7th Sunday of Easter.
What does that mean for us? It means that Thursday this
week is not a Holy Day of Obligation. We do not celebrate
the Ascension on that day. The Feast of the Ascension of the
Lord will be celebrated next Sunday, May 20, beginning with
the vigil Masses on Saturday evening May 19.
Heritage Hall
A few decisions had to be made regarding types of materials and the
source for them. Along with some other
decisions, we are able to avoid some
delays and the pace of work has once
again picked up. If all goes smoothly,
we hope to be into Heritage Hall by July 1.
On July 1, the official address for the National Shrine of the
Little Flower will become:
NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER
2100 West 12 Mile Road
Royal Oak, MI 48073
The main entrance to the Parish Offices will be from the entrance off the new 12 Mile Road parking lot.
High School Academy Gym
After Shrine Catholic High School’s outstanding performance of “Children of Eden” last week, we are all even more
excited about the new gym being completed. Once it is up
and running, we can then turn the present gym into the permanent performing arts center.
Rosie, Russia, and Carlito
Last Sunday, Rosie and Russia went to visit Charlie at the
lake. It was hard to get Rosie out of the water. Russia tried it
and did not much like it. Charlie will not go near it. Maybe
once the weather and the water are warmer, Russia and
Charlie will warm up to the idea.
Even though Rosie was the only one to go swimming, all
three seemed to enjoy the boat ride around the lake.

Fr. Jim’s Journal
Spring time is always an exciting season in the life of a parish.
The past two weekends we had beautiful First Communion Liturgies. Seeing all the second-graders come forward for the first
time to receive Jesus in the Eucharist brings back memories of
my own first communion at Our Lady of Grace Parish in Dearborn Hgts. What an exciting time this is for our second-graders
and their families! May our Shrine children and their parents continue to grow in
their love and awareness for Jesus in the Eucharist.
Also, during the month of May we give honor to Mary, our Blessed Mother, for her
role in salvation history. Mary’s “yes” to God gives us the opportunity to grow in our
relationship with Jesus as he came to reveal to us the Father’s love. Mary’s “yes”
transformed the face of the earth. May we continue to look to her for our hope and
inspiration in our potential to change the face of the earth through our faith in Jesus
Christ.
Last weekend Shrine High School’s Performing Arts Department did a fantastic
job with the musical production entitled “Children of Eden.” Our highly talented students from the high school, as well as a few from the grade school, creatively told
the story of creation based on the Book of Genesis. The acting, costumes, music, set
design and sound were remarkable! It is my understanding that all four performances were sold out! We are fortunate as a Catholic school community to have
such gifted students who receive a great deal of support form their parents and
family members.
With spring also comes all the activities associated with the close of another
school year: high school graduation, honor’s banquet, grade six promotions, kindergarten picnic and the list goes on and on. There is never a dull moment in parish
life! What a great blessing priesthood has been for me!!
Of course, this weekend we celebrate Mother’s Day!! To all moms and those
who take on a mother’s role, THANK YOU for all you do for your children and for your
families. I am grateful for the love, guidance, support, and knowledge offered to
me by my mom, as well as, by my dad. For their presence in my life I am most grateful. Don’t forget to take a moment to thank God for the gift of our moms on
Mother’s Day.
May God bless you and your families with His contentment and peace! Enjoy
the beauty of spring!!!
Become a Council Member
It’s an exciting time here at the National Shrine. If you are interested in being
on Parish Council, now is your chance. All names submitted will be placed in a
basket, and then at the 10:45 mass on Pentecost, May 27, Monsignor will be pulling out four names. This is a three-year commitment, with meetings on the 4th
Monday of the month. This is a great way to get involved in the parish. Please
call Nancy Phillips at 248.288.5261 or Kathie Dorsch at 248.548.2493 to submit
your name, or if you have any questions. FYI….If you are selected our first meeting will be a dinner meeting on June 1.

Growing in Faith as a Family . . . Elementary . . .
Sixth Sunday of Easter: “Whoever loves me will keep my word .”
Acts 15:1-2, 22-29, Rev 21:10-14, 22-23, and Jn
14:23-29
John’s Gospel speaks of the deep love that is required for a true relationship with God—a relationship
based on total trust and turning over of will. While Jesus’ words may sound harsh (Whoever does not love me does not keep
my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who
sent me), in reality our actions are a reflection of the devotion and love
we have towards God. Truth be told, we cannot say we love God if we
constantly disregard His commandments, His Church’s teachings, and
choose not to gather with the community of faith for regular worship.
Our actions are our response to God’s love for us. Mother’s Day gives us
a wonderful opportunity to reflect on this Gospel in a very rich way.
The Blessed Mother was fully human. Mary was born without the stain
of Original Sin, was full of grace, and like all of us, had the gift of freewill. When the angel appeared to Mary announcing she was to be the
mother of the Lord, Mary freely chose to obey, saying, “I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke
1:38). The Virgin’s love for God and her willingness to obey out of love
for Him allowed her to become the dwelling place of His Most Precious
Son.
Mary’s fiat, her ‘yes’ to God’s invitation to love and serve Him,
opened the door to our salvation. Mary’s deep love for God is shown
throughout the Gospel, but no more profoundly than as she stood at
the foot of the cross, gazing upon her dying Son. I cannot imagine the
faith it must have taken for Mary to understand how her Son’s suffering
and death could possibly fit into God’s loving plan—yet she did. When
the Romans removed Jesus from the cross, the soldiers laid Him in her
arms. How strong must have been her beliefs as she cradled her beloved Son and how deep her trust in God’s love and mercy.
The love a mother has for her child begins long before the child is
placed in her arms. Every mother remembers the first time she feels her
child move in her womb. The miracle of life dwelling inside—a child precious and dear—draws a mother into the Mystery of Creation. As her
baby develops, a mother begins to form a relationship with her little
one, long before the two can gaze upon each other face-to-face. Scientists report babies respond to voices in utero, particularly recognizing
their mother’s voice. This relationship and the relationship a father
forges with his child, forms the foundation for the child’s concept of
God as learned through the example of love shown between his or her
parents.
As Catholics, whether male or female, we have the opportunity to
take part in the Mystery of Creation—to be a dwelling place for the
Lord—to feel the movement of Christ in us through the Gift of the
Eucharist. Just as did Mary, we share in God’s invitation to be His servant
as we stand before the Sacred Host and Cup. Our “Amen” is our ‘yes’
to the acceptance of the Lord dwelling within us. As we receive His
Most Precious Body and Blood, we become vessels for Living His Presence. The fruits of our labors performed out of love for God give life and
presence to Christ in our midst.
Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the sanctity of life and to reflect
on the wonders of the Mystery of Creation, as well as our role as disciples of Christ. Our Blessed Mother can be our guide and strength, helping us to grow more deeply in love with her Precious Son. Let us be receivers of His love so our lives are a reflection of His Presence alive and
at work in our world.

Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima
Beginning on May 13 and continuing
through October 13 in 1917, the Blessed
Mother began appearing to three
children near the town of Fatima,
Portugal. This year marks the 90th
anniversary of the apparitions to
Francisco and Jacinta Marto and
Lucy Dos Santos, children ranging
from 7 to 10 years old. Mary told
the children she had been sent by
God with messages to be heard
by every man, woman, and child. Appearing at a time when the world was torn
apart by war and violence, Mary promised

Grade School
Reading Resource Room
The Reading Resource Room has been a busy
place this past year. Younger students are learning
varied strategies to help them when they come to a
“tricky” word that is unfamiliar or words that just “don’t
make sense.” They practice reading at their instructional level, becoming more confident, fluent readers.
We work heavily on pre-reading which also helps with
comprehension. Often, students work on writing skills
as part of the lessons, focusing on grammar, sentence
structure, paragraph formation or spelling.
I’m also working with groups of students who have
been identified through testing as being significantly
above grade level. These students work on projects
that require investigation and creative problem solving. Upon completion students share their projects
and learning with their classmates.
I’m thoroughly enjoying my new position at Shrine
Catholic Grade School as the Reading Resource
teacher. I taught elementary grades for 11 years before training for Reading Recovery six years ago. The
multi-sensory approach incorporated in Reading Recovery, coupled with the phonics, reading strategies
and writing, is easily adapted into reading support for
elementary readers.
Academy
Mrs. Peg Amell
Next Saturday, May 19, 65 Shrine Academy students will experience the Mantis, the Mean Streak, the
Maverick and music. The Academy band, eighthgrade choir and Music Connection group will travel to
Sandusky, Ohio, to take part in the “Music in the Parks”
program.
The “music” part happens in the morning, when
the three groups will perform before judges. Highlights
of the presentation include the spiritual Set Down Servant, as performed by the eighth-grade choir, and
Gloria, sung entirely in Latin by the Music Connection.
Following the performance, the group will venture
to Cedar Point for an afternoon park visit. The famous
amusement park opened for the season this weekend, and students will experience many of the 69 rides
– 17 of which are roller coasters. Scott Ruhle ’11, a
member of the eighth-grade choir, is one of the students looking forward to the trip.
National Shrine of the Little Flower
“We’re going there hopefully to place in a position, hopefully in the top three, and ride some sweet
rides,” he said. “My favorite ride is the Raptor, but I
haven’t been there in a while.”
The Shrine Academy performers will be accompanied by their faculty directors, including Ms. Sara
Skok, Ms. Julie Smyth, Ms. Melissa Liford and Mr.
James Mio.

CSA Minute—Mother’s Day and Family Ministry
This Sunday is Mother’s Day and the Church rejoices for all those who nurture the great gift of motherhood;
looking to its greatest witness, our Blessed Mother, who cared for her Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ.
The Archdiocese of Detroit helps mothers enrich and nurture their families through the work of the Office
for Family Ministry. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the office to directly support services and
programs for families.
The office makes available marriage preparation programs, such as Covenant Love and Cana II, which
are coordinated and sanctioned by the archdiocese. In addition, the office, which is part of the Department
of Education, supports programs to enrich and nurture marriages in other stages, whether it be through marriage encounters, prayer series or groups for the widowed, separated and divorced.
Catholic Services Appeal
Everyone should have received their CSA mailing last week. If you did not receive it, or if it has been misplaced, you can still contribute. Please use this form and you can drop it off at the church office or mail it, or
drop it in the Offertory collection basket.

Reflections on the Eucharist
Pope John Paul II, reflecting in Crossing the Threshold of Hope writes: "Peoples of the entire
world need to hear these words. Their conscience needs to grow in the certainty that Someone exists who holds in His Hands the destiny of this passing world… and this Someone is
Love—Love that became Man, Love crucified and risen, Love unceasingly present among
men. It is Eucharistic Love."

Coughlin Building. These

Meals on Wheels
Southeast Oakland County
Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver meals to Homebound seniors enrolled
in the “Meals on Wheels” program in Hazel Park, Ferndale, Royal Oak and Madison Heights. Substitute drivers are also
needed for these areas.
Volunteers are asked to drive a lunch
route in their community twice a month.
Meals are delivered only during the weekdays and routes take an average of 90
minutes to complete. Drivers use their
own vehicles for the deliveries and are
reimbursed for mileage expenses, if requested.
Many of the seniors depend on this
program to provide their one hot meal of
the day. Please consider helping with this
outreach of kindness and care.
For more information or to volunteer, call
Kris Jobe, SEOMOW Program Director at
313.538.8740.
