2013-2014 - Junior League of Springfield, MO
2013-2014 ANNUAL COMMUNITY REPORT JLS Takes on Two Year-Long Projects To further the mission of the Junior League of Springfield, volunteers took on two major year-long projects in 20132014. The first “Done In A Year” was the national program, Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children. The second was bringing Dr. Ruby Payne to the Ozarks to offer solutions on how to combat poverty. Darkness to Light is a community training program to prevent child abuse and neglect. It teaches adults how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The training is for any parent, teacher, or volunteer interested in the well-being of children. D2L is the only nationally distributed, evidence-based program proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes and change child protective behaviors by telling the stories of real victims. This program was presented locally with funding and support from JLS. The JLS collaborated with the Ozarks Regional YMCA to train facilitators and offer two-hour trainings to the public. The goal for the end of the JLS year was to have more than 700 people in the Ozarks trained on how to spot and prevent child abuse. Remarkably, Junior League volunteers helped more than 1,000 people go through the program. The second “Done In A Year” was a collaborative community event to bring an end to poverty. One of the most important “red flags” affecting our community is the growing rate of poverty in the Ozarks. In early 2014, JLS, along with twelve other groups in the Springfield area, partnered to sponsor and host a three-day educational event on impacting poverty. The groups brought noted educator Dr. Ruby Payne, author of “A Framework for Understanding Poverty” to Springfield for a series of meetings. She met with various community, civic As a result, Springfield’s city manager has now appointed a 33-member “Impacting Poverty Commission” to develop the strategic plan over the next year. and faith groups to springboard our efforts to develop a five, ten and twenty year poverty plan. Dozens of JLS volunteers staffed many of the meetings. More than 2,000 people attended sold-out events over the three days. As a result, Springfield’s city manager has now appointed a 33-member “Impacting Poverty Commission” to develop the strategic plan over the next year. As a member of the commission, the Junior League of Springfield will have influence on this community issue and recognize how our members will continue to participate in the years to come. Women Building Better Communities MESSAGE FROM THE 2013-2014 PRESIDENT It has been an honor to serve as the 201314 President of the Junior League of Springfield. I am so proud to be a part of an organization that truly lives out its mission: promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Getting and staying connected was an area of concentration this year. Our many training opportunities connected members to new skills and knowledge. Our committee work offered ways to better connect to other members and gain leadership experience. And our two Done In A Year projects, Darkness 2 Light Stewards of Children and the visit by Dr. Ruby Payne, effectively connected JLS and the community through our focus area of preventing child abuse and neglect. Creating these connections lays the groundwork for building capacity and community leadership. This can be seen in the number of JLS members who serve on boards, lead businesses, guide non-profits and engage in public service. When asked, many of our members state their capacity to do these things is in part due to the training and opportunities they receive in the Junior League. Over 630 women currently represent the membership of JLS. The success achieved in this year would not have been possible without the over 44,000 hours of volunteer time provided by our members through the League and in the community. As our membership continues to grow I know we will see the influence of JLS in our community for years to come. As exciting as it is to tell of our accomplishments, I know we are not able to do this alone. I wish to extend special thanks to all our donors, supporters and partners for standing with the League to make it possible for JLS members grow and to connect to the community. We appreciate your generosity and ask for your continued support. All Junior League active and new members are asked to pick at least one “Done in a Day” project throughout the year to complete. All of the projects were submitted to the Junior League of Springfield by different organizations in the Ozarks, including the JLS’ signature project, Isabel’s House, the Crisis Nursery of the Ozarks. JLS members spent hundreds of hours at these events volunteering their time and experience to help each organization. The Done in a Days also allow JLS members to receive training on other non-profit projects, and obtain organizational and leadership skills. They helped sell patches and accepted donations at the IH booth. 2013 Community Focus Report Released The Junior League of Springfield’s mission and projects are in response to the “red flags” outlined in bi-annual the Community Focus Report (CFR). The report was started in 2003 when leaders from JLS, Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, SpringfieldGreene County Library District, Community Foundation of the Ozarks and the United Way of the Ozarks pledged to develop a community livability report that identifies the “Blue Ribbon” (strengths) and the “Red Flags” (challenges) in eleven different sectors of our community. In 2013, this partnership published the sixth edition, “Focus 2013”. It looked at the community’s strengths and weakness over the past ten years of assessments. The report is now recognized as a primary resource for guiding initiatives and decision-making for the entire community. JLS and CFR partners release the report as part of The Children’s Summit bi-annually. Distinguished speakers, including JLS President Susie Turner, gathered for a panel in the Fall of 2013 to discuss the issues. JLS Attends Lobby Day Participated in Lobby Day with other Missouri Junior Leagues and ten JLS members in attendance. “...the Junior League of Springfield was given the opportunity to present the CFR at the national meeting in St. Louis in the summer of 2014.” This year, the report drew the attention of the Association of Junior Leagues International. As a result, the Junior League of Springfield was given the opportunity to present the CFR at the national meeting in St. Louis in the summer of 2014. JLS was highlighted on the topic of “Collaborative Community Impact”. The report is one of the reasons JLS choose its signature initiative. The “report card” identified child abuse and neglect in the community at a rate that was almost double the state average. This resulted in the decision to design, build and develop a crisis nursery as a tool to end the cycle of abuse and neglect in families through early intervention. That facility, Isabel’s House, the Crisis Nursery of the Ozarks, opened its doors to the community in 2007, and, to date, it has served more than 2300 children and 1200 families. Cookbooks JLS Annual Campaign A large part of donations in 20132014 came from the Junior League of Springfield’s annual campaign. The campaign, “Giving with a Thankful Heart” took a closer look at what our members do on a daily basis when they serve their community. It included a Facebook campaign on the Junior League page, which highlighted a member a day. It showed how they give their time, leadership and experience to JLS. Gifts to the campaign allowed the Junior League to continue promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving our community. Donors could designate the money to go into the general fund or the endowment fund. This Endowment is an investment set up by JLS in which regular withdrawals from the donated money may be used for specific purposes, such as operating expenses. The goal of the endowment fund is to reach $2 million. As of May 31, 2014, the fund was at 50% of goal. To donate to the Junior League, email us at [email protected]. Still continuing to be a fundraiser for JLS are the League’s cookbooks. More than $350 was raised by volunteers selling dozens of the books at several events throughout the Ozarks in 20132014. There are two cookbooks the Junior League of Springfield has crafted. “Sassafras” the Plaid Door Resale Boutique Voted as the 2014 Best Resale Shop by 417 Magazine, the Plaid Door is the Junior League of Springfield’s second longest running fundraiser.
