Boots on the ground habitat
restoration for mule deer.
One fine January day, a little over three years ago, while
I was working at the DSC Convention, I got a call from
Charlie Stockstill, the Southern Great Plains Regional
Director of the Mule Deer Foundation (MDF). He inquired
about my interest and ability to get conservation going here
in Texas for that great iconic animal of the West − the mule
deer, which happens to be my first big game animal as a lad
growing up in the Guadalupe Mountains of New Mexico. I
was interested, indeed.
The following day, Charlie drove over from Weatherford
to the DSC Convention and met with me to set the wheels
in motion. The Parker County Chapter of MDF would be
up and running soon.
The Texas Bighorn Society had installed guzzlers the
year before at the Adams Ranch in the Big Bend area,
and it was clear that they were also helping mule deer.
My longtime friend David Wetzel shared an ambitious
plan with me. With the help of some new and old friends,
guzzlers with buried holding tanks, in-ground gravity-fed
drinkers and huge catchment aprons could be installed.
After some planning and organizing, an alliance of partners
was brought together − Texas Parks and Wildlife, Sul
Ross University, Texas Bighorn Society, DSC and MDF
volunteers from all over the state. This first MDF venture
would be on the Adams Ranch in Brewster County.
This mule deer heaven had been purchased by CEMEX
USA and the Cuenca Los Ojos Foundation in 2006, and
came with a Conservation Easement in place held by the
Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, which would ensure

LETTER FROM T H E PRESIDENT
What We Do
CAMP TALK PRODUCTION STAFF
The mission of Dallas Safari Club is to conserve wildlife and wilderness
lands; to educate youth and the general public, and to promote and
protect the rights and interests of hunters worldwide.
September and October have gone by in a flash, and now it’s already November.
Where does the time go? The weather is tantalizingly cooler, if not flirting with chilly,
and another harvest celebration is upon us. In the fall and winter, in North America, we
go hunting. It’s what we do.
By the first half of December, Dallas Safari Club members will be anticipating the
delivery of two of our most important publications of the year: the DSC Auction Catalog
and the Convention issue of Game Trails magazine. Members pore over these pages and
make a wish list for upcoming auctions, read about hunts around the world and here at
home, catch up on the industry and conservation news because DSC walks the walk and
talks the talk. That’s what we do.
Dallas Safari Club is busy on many and various fronts, and things are only getting
more exciting as we ramp up for the Greatest Hunters Convention on the Planet. When
you read this, it will be just a few short weeks until we gather in downtown Dallas.
If you haven’t been to the show yet, go to your calendar right now and make plans
− Jan. 15-18, 9 a.m.to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on
Sunday. Refer to our website – www.biggame.org − for more details.
If you want to be part of something great, call the office and find out how you can
volunteer for the show. Come to the final DSC 100 meeting on Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. at
Southwest Gallery, 4500 Sigma Road, just down the street from DSC Headquarters.
There, you can sign up for one of a dozen committees (some folks work for just one,
some put in time on several). That’s how DSC members make our show the “greatest.”
Volunteering is in our DNA – it’s just what we do.
If you haven’t yet joined and are reading this, what’s the hold-up? Our mission is
printed above – we carry out this agenda in a lot of interesting ways. There is room for
you in our ranks, wherever you live, however you choose to shoot, hunt, fish, conserve
and enjoy the outdoors. We will welcome you with open arms and smiles – it’s just what
we do.

the conservation values of this property into
perpetuity.
As can be expected when embarking on
a project this large, the building of wildlife
guzzlers was a rollercoaster ride of planning
and coordination. Between securing the
funding and the appropriation of materials,
food, tools and the logistics, we finally got it
all covered, right down to the volunteers. I
can almost imagine what a military operation
must be like to organize!
During the construction, I was amazed at
how if I just pointed out a task, a volunteer
would take ownership of that task and surpass
my expectations every time. It didn’t matter
if it was jackhammering into solid rock for a
footing on a column support, or helping to
grade a ditch to level, or meticulously grading
the bottom of the tank excavation, or welding,
mixing concrete, screwing sheet metal in
place, or helping to install the gutter onto the
catch apron.
When you work side by side with
volunteers in such a remote location for a few
days, you take away little snippets of their
philosophy and their reasons for being there.
Their stories are humbling and reveal aspects
of people from all walks of life that will never
be depicted by mainstream media. Some
examples follow.
Billy Pat McKinney is the consummate
cowboy who manages this ranch and a lot of
other properties for CEMEX and the ECLCC.
McKinney is a walking, talking encyclopedia
on the area with a wealth of tales that will
have you on the edge of your seat around a
campfire, about his years of hunting mountain
lions or flying his plane back and forth on
both sides of the river.
Bonnie McKinney is an award winning
naturalist, and her book, In the Shadow of the
Carmens, is an absolute must-read if you wish
to know about the Big Bend region.
Charlie Stockstill helped us maneuver
the minefields of fundraising and exhibits
the strong steadfast demeanor that any
organization can only hope for.
Dave Dibben, on the national MDF board,
put more time on the jackhammer and ran
more sheet metal screws than imaginable.
Shawn Gray heads up the Mule Deer and Pronghorn Programs for Texas Parks
and Wildlife and has knowledge of all things wildlife, way beyond his years..
Thomas Janke is a bright, articulate young man, completing his studies at Sul Ross
University, and it’s obvious to all who spend time around him that conservation and
hunting course strong through his veins.
Alejandro Espinosa with CEMEX is a focused man dedicated to wildlife
conservation, delivering poignant words in support of that cause.
Felicia Rocha is a petite young lady with an iron will and proved it when she
showed all us burly boys just how to weld red iron and made it look easy.
And there were a lot of other folks behind the scenes such as Thomas Mozjesik,
president of L&S Mechanical, who chipped in all the plumbing materials, and many
unnamed rock stars who cooked, cleaned and provided support to all.
Unsung heroes were everywhere and the first permanent Mule Deer Foundation
wildlife guzzler in the State of Texas was completed and filled with life-giving
water. The recovery of mule deer populations in this arid region is now officially
underway.
We had hoped to complete two sites but ran short of time. We will return soon
and install the second guzzler. Plans are being discussed for more work projects
next year and every year until mule deer are once again thriving on Texas soil.
These two sites will be dedicated and plaques erected to commemorate MDF and
all those who contributed to this essential work. During a quiet moment, Billy Pat
McKinney took me off to the side and said, “The last time there was permanent
water where we stand was a long time ago when there was an inland sea here.” It is
the mission of all the Mule Deer Foundation chapters of Texas to see to it that the
Trans-Pecos has permanent water for all wildlife. CT
Note: In addition to support of the Mule Deer Foundation project, and the Texas
Bighorn Society’s improvements, DSC has also graciously donated to the
reintroduction of Gambell’s quail restoration on this very property.

FIS HIN G FEATURE By AARON ADKINS
Fishing Adventure – A Flossie Slam
An angler and crew brave an oncoming
tropical storm in Kona and hit pay dirt.
The Big Island of Hawaii is also a good blast
and cast destination. In addition to the billfish
fishing, we spent a day hunting wild pigs on
the famous Parker Ranch. It is a free range
hunt, yet the pigs are there in big numbers.
We saw several dozen pigs, and my son and
I each had our pig by 8:30 in the morning. The
Parker Ranch has lots of other game on offer,
including feral goats.
In July 2013, I fished four days in Kona with venerable Capt. Marlin
Parker and his crew. The boat chatter all day long on day two was the
oncoming Hurricane Flossie, predicted to strike the Hawaiian Islands late
the next day. No sensible person would fish in a hurricane, of course. But
hurricanes rarely pass directly through Hawaii. And in the past, hurricanes
forecasted to hit the Hawaiian Islands more often than not ended up
veering off and missing the Islands.
Most captains and clients were canceling their charters the next day. But
with the Hurricane not expected to hit the Big Island until the afternoon,
Capt. Parker gave us the option of giving the next day a shot − starting the
next morning and keeping closer than normal to the marina for a quick
run back in the event the weather turned and we needed to run in quickly.
As a billfishing addict that does not get nearly enough time on the water
(in my view), I jumped at the chance. In fact, I was very optimistic.
Kona is a great billfish fishery. It produces lots of marlin and lots of
big marlin. The captains and boats are top notch. The charter rates are
reasonable. And the Big Island of Hawaii is a wonderful place to visit. I just
have one complaint − there are too many fishing boats crowding up the
fishing grounds. With most of the boats staying in the next day, we would
have the fishing grounds mostly to ourselves. Our prediction proved right,
and it turned out to be a great day.
The next morning, the weather was calm, the sun was bright and the
water was flat. Hurricane Flossie had been downgraded to a tropical storm
and was veering north. All day long, we closely monitored the weather and
made calls to the other side of the Big Island where the storm would hit
first.
Around 10 a.m., we got our first strike. A (estimated) 300-pound blue
marlin struck a lure. But after five minutes or so after being hooked up, the
marlin spit the hook. Later, what was probably a spearfish struck a lure but
did not hook up.
By midday, with the sky starting to cloud up, the action cranked up.
First, I caught a 35-pound or so spearfish − my first one. And then we
6 | D allas S afari C lub N ewsbi g g ame . or g
got a double on striped marlin (the largest around 50 pounds).
Fortunately, my father was along, and we each got to reel one in. An
hour later, a 250-pound blue marlin smashed a lure. While I was
fighting him to the boat, a drizzle started and the waves began picking
bi g g ame . or g up. With due concern for the weather, Capt.
Parker made the decision to fight the marlin a bit
aggressively. And in too short of time, we had the
marlin to the boat for a quick release. We now had
a coveted Grand Slam (an angler catching three
different billfish species in a single day). Someone
jokingly called it a “Flossie Slam!”
With the skies turning dark and the waves
and rain picking up, we made a quick run to
the marina. By the time we were organized and
ready to head home, the rain was coming down
steady. In the end, the Tropical Storm did much
less damage to the Islands than predicted, having
weakened and veered north. It did not at all
interrupt our vacation.
I very much enjoyed the Grand Slam and fishing
with my father and a great captain and crew. And
with the conclusion of this story begins another.
Having caught the spearfish − what many consider
the hardest billfish among the nine billfish species
required for a Royal Slam—I now have a Royal
Slam on my list of billfishing goals! CT

DSC 2015 Trophy Awards Competition
“The photos and trophies we collect are merely a representation of what it took to actually get those photos and
trophies…. It is the hunting experience as a whole, that’s what keeps us coming back to those campfires.” – Ivan Carter
It is in the spirit of celebrating that experience and the
joy of hunting that leads us to celebrate the trophies taken
in the past year. Dallas Safari Club presents awards to its
members once a year. As judged by a panel of Dallas Safari
Club experts, prizes are awarded for the best trophies by
region, size, species and the hunter’s age group.
To enter, contestants should provide the following:
1. Completed Member Trophy Awards Form for each animal entered. Available on the DSC website under “Awards” from the home page.
2. A field photo, preferably digital, of you with your trophy
3. $30 entry fee for each animal entered
4. A score sheet for each animal entered
5. B&C scores are admissible for North American game
The DEADLINE for submitting completed entries to
the DSC office for the 2015 competition is DECEMBER
15, 2014.
If the entries are incomplete or not received by
the deadline, they will be carried over to next year’s
competition.
Field photos of you and your trophy will be displayed
in the Trophy Award or Membership area during the
convention, and winners will be awarded at an upcoming
monthly meeting and listed in a subsequent issue of Camp
Talk. If you are interested in displaying your actual trophy
during the convention, you should contact the chairman of
the Wildlife Committee a minimum of one week prior to
the convention.
We hope more DSC members will participate in this
year’s trophy awards so we can celebrate hunting success. CT

H UNT REPORT
Cape Buffalo in Zimbabwe
Date: Aug. 19-24, 2014
Hunter: Karl Evans (Rebecca Evans, non-hunter)
Outfitter: Charlton McCallum Safaris
Guide: Myles McCallum
Length of Days: 6 days
Area Hunted: Dande
Method of Take: Rifle
Difficulty of Hunt: Hard
Overall Satisfaction: Excellent, very satisfied, hope to
return!
Comments: Tracking “dagga boys” mile after mile, looking
for just the right bull, we saw hundreds of Cape buffalos
and were within easy rifle range of numerous shootable
bulls. Tracker Criton was amazing with his ability to follow
a specific track even though intermingled with dozens of
other tracks. I definitely recommend this hunt.
Notes from the non-hunter: The camp was very nice:
generated electricity, small touches (folded napkins, plenty
of ice) made it feel like a five-star hotel instead of safari camp
in the middle of the bush. The food was EXCELLENT! CT

Christmas
Giving for
Happy Hill
Farm
It is time once again to ask the DSC members to reach
out to the children of Happy Hill Farm for Christmas.
Happy Hill has requested that we provide gift cards for
the children because they are easier to handle and do not
require that the names and gifts be matched up, wrapped
or checked for appropriateness. Gift cards are the most
requested item on their wish lists. This format allows
HHF to treat the entire student body equally.
Donations can be cash or a check made out to DSC, or
you may purchase gift cards from Wal-Mart or Target for
$20 or $25. Please be sure to indicate the amount of the
gift somewhere on the card. Karen Wolfe, Lucy Blachly
and Dixie Yeatts will purchase more gift cards with the
money we receive.
You may send or drop off your donations to the DSC
office any time. We will also collect donations at the
November monthly meeting. We need to have all cards/
cash in to DSC by Dec. 10-12, 2014. This year, we will
have about 150 children between the ages of 5-18.
Thank you so much for your donations in the past and
again this year. The students at Happy Hill Farm are very
appreciative of all we do for them.

RELOADIN G by terry blauwkamp
Mix ‘N Match Bullets
Many times, folks write to me and ask why they are getting
different results than what the “book” tells them.
It seems they take a Nosler book, which tells them to use a
certain amount of IMR 4350 powder and a 130-grain bullet,
using Federal 210 primers to produce x feet per second (fps).
The only problem is that John Q. Reloader used a Sierra bullet
and a Remington 9-1/2 primer and achieved a lower velocity.
Whoa, now the writer is all excited as he did not get the same
results.
First of all, virtually every reloading manual is produced by
a bullet or powder manufacturer. Their first intent is to sell
you a book, and then hope you use their bullets or powder.
What you also need to factor in is the difference in the gun
or barrel each is using. One manual may be using a premium
barrel of very tight or minimum dimensions 24 inches
long, while another one may be using a standard factory
production sporter with a 22-inch barrel. One may be using
a stainless barrel and another chrome-moly. Absolutely every
component affects everything.
Just to see what really happens, I ran some tests using
several different combinations of .270 Winchester caliber
barrels and rifles I had available. See Table.
As you can see, every barrel is a law unto itself. The Walther
was consistently the fastest, and the 22-inch Remington
naturally was the slowest, while the Remington Stainless
consistently gave the most uniform groups and the Walther
shot the smallest groups.
I looked up this load in the Nosler, Hornady and Barnes
Manuals, and found that they all use a 24-inch barrel. However,
Barnes does not list H4831 with their 130-grain bullets. Nosler
states a maximum load of 56.5 grains and Hornady’s maximum
load is way up to 62.0 grains.
So, you can easily see why the old rule of thumb is to “start
low and work up.” CT

DEF NEWS
Educating the Public About Wildlife Conservation
Does the general public
read Game Trails or
Camp Talk? Possibly, but
how will the message
of wildlife conservation
and the North American
Model for Wildlife
Conservation be
presented to those who
are not involved in DSC,
or in hunting and fishing?
Please visit the DEF
and learn more about
Outdoor Adventures, www.
dallasecologicalfoundation.org.
As a former high school Outdoor Adventures teacher, I know that the messages
that students hear in school about wildlife conservation are based on misinformation
and unfounded opinion. Students are taught, “Wildlife has always been in the wild
and we should not touch it, much less hunt it!” or “Wildlife will exist without human
intervention!”
Only in Outdoor Adventures (OA) will the true message of the North American Model
for Wildlife Conservation be taught to the general public. OA students understand the
role of hunters and anglers in wildlife conservation. In fact, the OA curriculum addresses
all of the “Seven Sisters of Conservation” in the North American Model for Wildlife
Conservation, which include:
1. Wildlife is Held in the Public Trust
2. Prohibition on Commerce of Dead Wildlife
3. Democratic Rule of Law
4. Hunting Opportunity for All
5. Non-Frivolous Use
6. International Resources
7. Scientific Management
Where will the general public learn about these vital concepts? Today, there are 20,000
students in OA programs where they are learning these principles. Each student will learn
Hunter Education, Angler Education, Archery, Boater Education and much more. CT

CONSERVATION NEWS
Straight-Horned Markhor
Rebounds from Brink of
Extinction
Thanks to a 30-year community conservation program in the
remote mountains of Pakistan, a key population of the straighthorned markhor has made a remarkable recovery to the point
where the subspecies’ status is being reduced from endangered
to threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
The straight-horned markhor occurs in small, scattered
populations mainly in the mountains of Balochistan and
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, Pakistan. In 1984, a critical
population in the Torghar Hills stood at just 200 individuals,
a result of heavy artillery use and killing during periods of
political unrest. Today, that same population numbers in excess
of 3,500.
The turnaround resulted directly from the Torghar
Conservation Project, a community-controlled conservation
program that uses limited trophy hunting as a means to raise
critically needed funds for markhor conservation, while
improving habitat for both markhor and domestic livestock
and improving the economic conditions for the local tribal
community. Revenue from this program has funded local game
wardens, construction and maintenance of wells, irrigation
channels, schools and other community infrastructure, and
medical and veterinary supplies to the local community.
The program’s success has served as an incentive for tribal
groups in several other regions to explore similar markhor
conservation projects.
In recognition of the benefit that this conservation approach
has had and can continue to have for the straight-horned
markhor, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will also allow
the import of certain sport-hunted straight-horned markhor
trophies into the U.S., without a threatened species permit
issued under the ESA.
The trophies must be taken from established conservation
programs that meet strict criteria. In particular, the populations
of straight-horned markhor must be sufficiently large enough
to sustain sport hunting, the populations must be stable or
increasing, and regulatory authorities must have access to
reliable population data. The conservation program must
further demonstrate a benefit of hunting to both the local
communities and the species, and the funds derived from
sport hunting must be applied toward the community and the
species. CT

the Torghar Conservation Project, please visit
