First-floor men
Four nurses, 65 years of service
Back when the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne
operated Our Lady of Peace Home, a simple system
was in place: The Sisters cared for female patients on
the second floor, and the male nurses cared for male
patients on the first floor.
That gender division resulted in Our Lady’s
predominately male first-floor nursing staff, who
has accrued formidable experience and a robust
camaraderie.
The morning nursing staff boasts some impressive
employment stats: Tom Cassidy (23 years), Frezgi
Hiskias (7 years), Ken Porter (13 years) and Hari Pal
(22 years). Combined, that’s 65 years of service.
The men say they work together naturally and their
respect for each other continually deepens.
“We work together, like a team, and we help each
other,” Hari said. “We don’t argue about little things.”
“There’s always harmony here, so the attention can
be given to our patients,” Frezgi added. “That makes
us different. I’ve worked in several nursing homes,
and there’s no place like this.”
“No,” Ken agreed.
From left, Frezgi Hiskias, Tom Cassidy, Hari Pal and Ken
Porter.
That accord is wrapped in good humor.
“We’re always kidding each other,” Ken said. “We
have so much fun.”
“We get along great together,” Tom added. “There’s
a continuity. It’s kind of like being married – you
know what the other person is thinking and their
strengths and you’re working together and getting
things done.”

Standards of excellence
Humble men
The staff’s combined experience manifests itself
daily. “It’s a great place to work,” Tom said. “The
turnover is so low. It shows up in the care. We take a
lot of pride in making patients feel as comfortable as
possible, to die with dignity.”
That gentle faith comes with firm resolve.
Tom began working at Our Lady as a nursing assistant
in July 1988. Hari joined the staff the next year. Frezgi,
who has logged seven years on staff, can see why his
colleagues have stuck around for two decades.
“Sometimes we may approach patients a little
differently,” Tom said of the male staff. “We may
tell them what they need instead of what they want.
We’ll be a little more insistent.”
The men are quick to point out each other’s strengths
and the many things they’ve learned from each other.
“I learn something new every day,” Ken said.
“I understand why,” said Frezgi. “I don’t want to
go anywhere. We can provide total patient care.
I feel like I’m on a bridge: sometimes you can be
instrumental, to give spiritual guidance and make
them comfortable connecting with their God.”
His colleagues feel similarly.
“When you walk in,” Hari said, “It feels like heaven.”
“Yeah, it does,” said Ken. “He’s right. We’re like a big
family here. You’re working with people who die and
who are in a difficult state. It gets to be a big family.
You see many miracles.”
Frezgi calls Tom, who trained him when he arrived,
“maestro.”
“We’re buddies,” Tom said, smiling.
“Tom is the most patient person,” Frezgi said. “He
is so calm. And Hari knows every single detail of this
home. He runs the ship! You ask him where something
is, he can find it. He’s one of the most skilled people,
when it comes to things like tubes. He’s very helpful.”
Hari responds modestly. “They taught me a lot,” he
said. “When I left Fiji, I had no English experience.
I learned a lot speaking to them. They’re good
people.”
When Lightning Strikes
As a boy, Frezgi
Hiskias
worked
as a shepherd,
corralling
goats,
sheep and cows
hundreds of miles
across the Horn of
Africa.
Frezgi Hiskias, Our Lady’s charge
nurse, has played traditional
Ethiopian/Eritrean melodies on
hand-crafted flutes since he was 7.
He plays music that is largely “lost”
and often brings natives to tears.
It was a sunscorched, nomadic
life, and he passed
the time by playing
a bamboo flute,
breathing
music
into the hot air.
One day in 1977,
when Frezgi was 13, he and a friend were out
shepherding and got stuck in a menacing storm. They
squatted under a tree and wrapped a jacket over their
heads. And then, the worst-case scenario happened:
Lighting struck them, hitting his friend at his side first,
and then burning him. Frezgi fell into a coma and his
friend died.
After five hours, Frezgi woke from the coma – a
shocked, crippled boy who would walk with a cane for
seven years.
“It must have gone through my friend and then came
to me, so I got partial [damage],” Frezgi explained. “I
would be dead otherwise.”
But he survived, and he’s endlessly grateful for his
second lease on life.
“To be here,” Frezgi said, “It’s only God’s intervention.
I feel like God had a purpose for my life.”
The life-threatening event profoundly influenced his
outlook, which he shares with patients. “I tell them,
‘This is the day the Lord has made.’ For me it’s today.
I don’t live for yesterday or tomorrow.”

St. Mary’s Hospice
celebrates 10-year
anniversary
St. Mary’s Hospice celebrated its 10th anniversary
Aug. 16 with a special butterfly release. The memorable summer gathering also served as the annual
memorial event to remember all those patients who
have died in the past year. Family members and
friends were invited to remember a loved ones by
purchasing a butterfly in their names that were then
released at the celebration.
The event was very well received, with 144 monarch
butterflies released and more than $11,000 raised to
support the St. Mary’s Hospice program. About 150
people attended the festivities, which included live
music, ice cream and cupcakes and culminated with
the release of the butterflies.
Tabitha Forrey, 7, daughter of St. Mary’s massage therapist,
Sara, was thrilled when two butterflies landed on her.
Kim Perez, volunteer coordinator for Our Lady of
Peace Home. “The comments I heard from many was
that they were deeply touched by the event.”
While most of the butterflies flew away after being
released, several stayed around, seemingly to pay
tribute to those in attendance.
“That butterfly right there is my wife,” said one
man, whose wife had been a hospice patient. “She’s
always one of the last to leave a good party!”
St. Mary’s Hospice is located on the campus of Our
Lady of Peace Home and is the only Catholic-based
hospice in the Twin Cities metro area. Its goal is to
provide a comforting and spiritual end-of-life experience for patients and families. For more information
about St. Mary’s Hospice, please call 651-789-5030.
Guests enjoyed visiting with friends and staff prior to the
butterfly release.
“We are very proud of how our hospice program has
grown over the past 10 years,” said Nancy Larson,
director. “This was a wonderful way to celebrate our
growth and the many lives our staff have touched.
We do an amazing job caring for our patients and
their families, providing a spiritual end-of-life experience that is so important in the dying process. The
success of this event shows just how much families
appreciate the job our staff does.”
The butterfly release proved to be a moving and
spiritual experience for many in attendance.
“There was a moment just after the butterflies were
released where time just seemed to stand still,” said

Our Lady of Good Counsel Home becomes
Our Lady of Peace Home
In February of 2009, the Dominican Sisters of
Hawthorne turned over operation of Our Lady
of Good Counsel Home to the Franciscan Health
Community. As part of the transfer agreement,
the Sisters requested that the name Our Lady of
Good Counsel Home be changed. After much
thought and consideration, the name that was
chosen is Our Lady of Peace Home. The change
became effective June 1, 2011.
“We felt it was important to keep ‘Our Lady’ in
the name because of the home’s rich history,”
explained Kathryn Wornson, director. “In
addition, we chose the word ‘peace’ because
we often hear people comment about the sense
of peace they feel when they enter our facility.
Thus, we felt Our Lady of Peace Home was a very appropriate selection!
“We were honored to be chosen by the Sisters to continue their long tradition of providing free end-of-life
care to patients and their families. It’s a mission they started on Dec. 7, 1941, and that we are able to continue
today thanks to a tremendously generous donor community.
“The only thing that has changed is our name. We still provide free care to our patients, allowing them to die
in peace and with dignity with the best care possible,” Kathryn concluded.
A Holiday Homecoming
A special holiday tradition began on Dec. 5, 2010, when
Our Lady of Peace Home hosted its first annual Celebration
of Life event. Friends and family members were invited to
purchase a star to be placed on our Christmas tree in honor
of a loved one who had passed away.
More than 340 stars were purchased for the tree, bringing
in a total of $35,805 for the home. The decorated tree was
on display in the chapel, where the names of those who
were being remembered were projected onto the wall. It
was a powerful scene.
In addition, more than 200 people attended the open
house event, reconnecting with staff and volunteers and
paying tribute to their loved ones who passed away and to
our staff who cared for them in their final days.
Staff and volunteers greeted guests who attended
the first annual Celebration of Life event.
For many, the event marked the first time they had revisited
Our Lady since the death of their loved one. It was an emotional, spiritual day for those who attended, including
our staff, whose presence had a profound impact on the family members and friends in attendance.

First annual luncheon raises funds, friends
Featuring heart-warming speakers, a stirring
documentary, and 362 guests, the first annual Friends
of Our Lady Fundraising Luncheon was a wonderful
success.
Held at the Prom Center in Woodbury on Thursday,
May 19, the event raised $76,600 for Our Lady of
Peace Home, while also raising awareness about our
mission.
“When we started planning for this event,
we had hoped to have 10-15 table hosts and
about 150 people,” said Mike Randall, director
of development and communications for Our
Lady. “We ended up with 35 table hosts and
362 guests. Com-bined with our wonderful
speakers and an amazing video about Our
Lady of Peace Home, the luncheon exceeded
our expectations!”
A highlight of the luncheon was the video
produced by Naomi Boak, whose husband
Michael was a patient at Our Lady of Peace
Home in 2010.
(continued on next page)
Donn Eiden, table host extraordinaire
When planning started for the first annual Friends
of Our Lady Fundraising Luncheon, the primary
objective was to recruit volunteers to serve as table
hosts. Their job would be to fill a table of eight people
who would consider supporting Our Lady.
All told, 35 people agreed to serve as table hosts,
one of whom was Don Eiden, a long-time donor and
admirer of Our Lady of Peace Home.
“I have known three people who died at Our Lady
and have visited many others over the years who
were fellow parishioners at Nativity in St. Paul,” Donn
said. “There’s such a warm, peaceful feeling you get
when you walk in the doors. And I have always been
so impressed with the staff. I really felt like I needed
to do something there.”
That deep-seated respect compelled Donn to
volunteer as a table host for the luncheon. And he’d
be the first to admit that it wasn’t smooth sailing
initially.
“I remember getting a call from Donn shortly after
our orientation meeting,” recalled Mike Randall, Our
Lady’s director of development. “He was concerned
5
The Journey
because he was having
a difficult time filling his
table and said that if things
didn’t pick up soon he may
have to resign from the
committee.
“Well, about a week later
he called back and said
things were going better
and it looked like he would
be able to fill a table,”
Mike continued. “Then, a
Donn Eiden
week after that he called
and said he might actually be able to fill two tables.
So when he called a week later I wasn’t the least bit
surprised to hear that he had filled three tables!”
That dedication and desire to help is evident when
you sit down and talk with Donn about Our Lady of
Peace.
“It’s so beautiful the way staff treats the patients and
family members,” Donn said. “That’s why I chose to
support the home financially. It’s such a wonderful
place.”
It is a moving documentary that captures the essence
of Our Lady of Peace Home. The video was given to
the home as a gift from Naomi for the wonderful care
that both she and Michael received during his stay
here. The video was dedicated to Ricki Gale, Marlys
Armstrong, Tony Grundy, Stanley Jamison, and Eric
Stechmann, who shared their final days with us to
help tell our story.
The program also featured speakers Tom Gartland
and Mary O’Keefe, each of whom had a parent who
stayed at Our Lady.
They both shared
personal and intimate
stories about their
experiences here.
Mary talked about the
great dignity her father
was shown: he was
bathed each morning,
his hair was combed
and his pajamas were
pressed. Our Lady,
she said tearfully, is “a
sacred space.”
Tom recalled placing
his mother in the car
for the trip to Our
Lady, what would
ultimately be “her last
car ride,” and also
praised the amazing
staff who cared for both his mother and her
family.
Nursing Supervisor Matthew Stafford, who
has worked at Our Lady for 28 years, shared
some of his insight about the home. Working
at Our Lady is a “vocation,” he said, not a
job.
Combined with the great food and shared
community spirit, it was a remarkable day.
“It was a wonderful event that brought
together people who have been longtime
supporters and those who were learning
about Our Lady for the first time, all with
the common goal of supporting our mission
to provide free end-of-life care to those in
need,” said Kathryn Wornson, director.
“One of our goals was to get the word
out about what a valuable and necessary
community
asset
Our Lady is and to
broaden our base of
support. I think we
accomplished
that
goal.”
The key to the event’s
success was the work
of the 35 table hosts,
who were asked to
bring people to the
event to learn more
about the home’s
mission.
There was no cost to
attend, but people
were asked to make
a three-year pledge
to support the home.
The table hosts did an amazing job prompting people
to attend, led by Donn Eiden, who alone brought 24
guests (see article on page 5).
Next year’s event is scheduled for Thursday, May 17,
2012. If you would be interested in serving as a table
host, please contact Mike Randall at 651-789-5029.

Celebrating 70 Years of Caring
Mike Randall, Director of Development
On Dec. 7, 1941, the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne
opened Our Lady of Good Counsel Home (now called
Our Lady of Peace Home). Their mission was to care
for, in their words, “those whom the ravages of disease
[cancer] had robbed of health and financial security.”
Their first home in St. Paul was the Tri-State Telephone
and Telegraph building, which was converted into a
care facility. One of the first patients was “Ma” Kane,
a mother of nine children who, as a child, had travelled
to St. Paul in a covered wagon. It was a functional
building that served them well, especially after they
learned which doors opened to the laundry chute and
which doors opened to the incinerator!
In 1981 the new facility was completed, with modern
health care equipment, rooms instead of large wards,
7
The Journey
a new chapel, and office
space.
Even
today
changes
continue, from our name
change (page 3), to our
plans to landscape our
beautiful grounds so that
patients and families who
are able can have access to
them. We have also recently remodeled our rooms to
provide for more patient privacy.
Happily, the one constant that remains is to provide
for our patients a peaceful, dignified and spiritual end
of life, and to provide that care free of charge.

Year In Review
By Kathryn Wornson, VP of Home Care and End of Life Care
It has been a busy and fulfilling spring and summer
at Our Lady of Peace Home. Our first Friends of Our
Lady Fundraising Luncheon was held in May at the
Prom Center. It was a huge success, attracting 362
attendees and raising $76,600.
We were happy to welcome two sisters from India in
mid-May, Sister Shergy and Sister Metty. The nurses
are from the Franciscan Clarist Order and came on
work Visas to join their Sisters here and in Vermillion.
They spent a number of weeks at Our Lady of Good
Counsel Academy in Mankato brushing up on their
English. In August they received training as certified
nurse aides and are set to test out in September.
Throughout the spring and summer, Our Lady has
been in the process of remodeling our patient rooms.
The goal has been to provide a bit more privacy to
our patients and their families. Dividers have been
installed that will provide space for new flat-screen
television sets, as well as personal pictures and
mementos that will make our patients feel more at
home. New privacy curtains will also be installed. We
have tried to do our construction when rooms are
empty and the least inconvenient to patients. The
effort will continue into the fall until all of the rooms
are finished.
We take seriously our role of continuing this amazing
mission that the Sisters began almost 70 years ago.
That decision is reinforced daily from the positive
comments and thank-you cards we receive from
family members and friends, some of which are
published on page 38.
However, those who deserve the biggest thank you
are you, our donors, who provide the funds we need
to operate Our Lady of Peace Home. And while we
receive thousands of gifts annually, the ones that
make the biggest impact are the planned estate
gifts we receive from thoughtful donors who realized
what a tremendous difference they could have by
including us in their will.
If you have included Our Lady of Peace Home in
your estate planning, we thank you. If you would like
more information on how to do that, please contact
me at 651-789-5029. We appreciate your continued
support.
On Aug. 16, St. Mary’s
Hospice celebrated its
10-year anniversary with
a memorial service and
butterfly release. It was a
very moving and spiritual
day. I heard many special
stories from those who
attended. The butterflies
were released at once
and lighted on the arms, hands, noses and skirts of
patients, family members and staff in the courtyard.
As one staffer put it, “The moment was surreal, time
just seemed to stand still...”
One man tearfully identified a butterfly sitting on a
hanging geranium as his wife. “She was always the
last one to leave a party.” Thank you to the special
team who planned every detail to make it such a
special and meaningful event.
In closing, I am thankful every day for the deep
commitment of our leadership, our Board and our
community for supporting the sacred mission of
loving care offered to those suffering from cancer
and lacking in funds.
Your Legacy Makes
A Difference
A planned estate gift to Our Lady of Peace
Home is a wonderful way to leave a lasting
legacy. Your deferred gift, in the form of a will
bequest, living trust or gift annuity, supports
our mission of providing end-of-life care free
of charge to patients and their families. For
more information on planned giving options,
please contact Mike Randall, Director of
Development and Communications at 651789-5029.

A Second Chance at Love
Two proposals, four dozen roses, nine children and 54 years
The news arrived in April of 2010, and Chuck can
recite it verbatim: “The doctor said, ‘I hate to be the
bearer of bad news, but you’ve got cancer, and you
probably have five months.’”
Chuck, 69, and his 68-year-old wife, Barb, sprang
into action, beginning radiation therapy days later –
on their 4-year wedding anniversary. It was another
shocking twist
for the St. Paul
natives
who
met on Chuck’s
15th birthday.
And yet, the
couple
is
counting their
blessings:
Chuck has long
exceeded the
five-month
mark, he has
April 3, 1961
been
living
without pain and he
is now receiving wonderful care from St.
Mary’s Hospice.
The Army vet who raised four kids and lost
his first wife has learned to trust in God’s
mysterious ways, embracing each new day
as a gift.
Their first date
Chuck began working as soon as he could,
starting as a bus boy at Carlene’s Cafeteria
on 4th and Robert Street in St. Paul the day he
turned 15. Barb, 14, was already working there as a
salad girl, having fibbed about her age. They earned
75 cents an hour.
“I liked Barb right off the bat,” Chuck said of the girl
in the green St. Joseph Academy uniform. She had
soft brown eyes, pretty lips and loose brown curls.
a part on the back of his head. And for all that flair,
there was a gentleness to him.
Soon Chuck and Barb were cruising St. Paul with her
girlfriends piled in. They stayed out late and drank
cheap North Star beer. It didn’t take long before
Chuck and Barb were saying “I love you” and going
to drive-in movies.
“Sometimes we saw the same movie four times in a
row,” Chuck said.
Chuck’s mission was to turn the radio dial in search of
better tunes. Elvis. The Everly Brothers.
“It was beautiful music, boy,” he said, breaking into
All You Have To Do Is Dream: “I can make you mine,
taste your lips of
wine.”
Chuck graduated
from Washington
High School in
1960,
joined
the Army and
got
stationed
at Fort Snelling,
allowing
him
to keep dating
Barb and attend
her senior year
dances.
But
when he was
assigned
to
August 15, 2011
Germany
the
following year,
he was ready to broaden his horizons and called
things off with Barb.
A fork in the road
Barb was devastated but managed to pull herself
together and eventually move on.
In October of 1963 Chuck returned to Minnesota.
And Chuck?
Chuck had a car. His 1951 baby blue Plymouth made
him popular with all the St. Joseph girls. He styled his
dark brown hair meticulously, slathering petroleum
jelly to get it to swirl just right on top and come to
9
The Journey
“He came knocking on the door like nothing
happened!” Barb said.
“But she had already met somebody,” Chuck said.
(continued on next page)
“Well, you told me to,” Barb responded.
Still, the reunited young adults couldn’t help but
spend time together, and Paul, Barb’s new love
interest, was away at the time.
Ultimately, both men expressed their intention
to marry Barb and both sent a dozen red roses –
bouquets that arrived within an hour of each other.
Her ship was set to return in a week, and the two
made plans to meet. “I was standing at the counter in
the airport and she was coming down the escalator,
you know, feet first,” Chuck recalled, looking off at
a vague midpoint, “and as soon as I saw her face, I
knew it was her.”
Some things don’t change.
“Love, Chuck,” the other note read.
Barb greeted an older, wiser Chuck, who offered her
two dozen red roses, a big hug and a quick peck.
They headed to Como Lake to chat and later joined
her family for a mirthful celebration.
“I was going crazy,” Barb recalled.
“It was comfortable,” Chuck said.
With Paul back in town for Thanksgiving, hovering
nearby, she called Chuck and said that she would be
picking between the two men.
“We knew each other’s spirit, essence,” Barb added.
“Love, Paul,” one note read.
Oddly, Chuck relented, insisting she choose the other
guy and abruptly hanging up.
“I knew it would be Barb,” he said, referring to his
next companion.
The next day they went ring shopping. They married
on April 29, 2006.
Forty five years passed before they spoke again.
Chuck married Kathy Gaertner, a “nice Catholic girl”
he met at a dance. She was a loving mom and they
had a wonderful marriage.
“I thought, ‘You know, we’re in our 60s, you never
know what’s going to happen, and forget it – life’s
too short,’” Barb said, referring to their decision to
marry. “And, boy, looking back, I’m glad we did.”
Later Kathy got Parkinson’s and Chuck nursed her
until she passed away in 2005. He grieved her death,
but ultimately began wondering how he could find
a supportive companion. The memory of Barb came
back, and occasionally the Beach Boys’ “Barbara
Ann” would send him down memory lane.
Barb and Chuck believe they were destined to
reunite.
Barb married Paul and raised five bright children.
Barb and Paul divorced in 1989.
They both insist they have no regrets about not
marrying decades earlier.
A romantic reunion
“We’re just so blessed that we did get back together,”
Barb said.
Finally, after announcing the idea to his kids, Chuck
decided to get in touch with Barb again, obtaining
her email address from a friend’s friend who knew
she was out to sea, working on an ammo ship.
Perched in the upstairs den of his Cottage Grove
home, overlooking a maple tree he had planted,
Chuck typed out a brave email to Barb: “Do you
remember me?”
Barb was working three miles out of New Jersey,
overlooking a stunning view of the New York skyline,
when she received Chuck’s email. Her response: “I
gave you a piece of my heart! How could I forget
you?”
“Our lives just went like this,” he said, sending his
arms in opposite directions and then uniting them in
a circular motion, “around and then back together.”
“We are blessed,” Chuck echoed.
“And he needs me now. There’s no place I’d rather
be than right here. It’s where I’m supposed to be.”
Hospice friends
Now that Chuck is battling brain cancer, lung cancer
and liver cancer, he and Barb have welcomed St.
Mary’s Hospice, which allows them to continue
their cherished home life. Reading the paper in the
kitchen. Walking their loop in the neighborhood.
Zipping over to daily Mass at nearby St. Rita’s.

Volunteer Profile
Grateful widow has logged two decades of service
Karen Gillen’s friends were surprised how quickly
she returned to Our Lady of Peace Home after her
husband passed away.
“How could you
go back there?”
the retired nurse
from St. Paul
remembers being
asked.
“And
I said, ‘Those
people were my
family. It just gave
me such warm
fuzzy feelings. It
was a comfort
zone.’”
Karen’s husband,
Tom,
spent
three months at
Our Lady as he
valiantly battled
brain
cancer.
He died Nov. 13,
1989, shortly after
their 26th wedding
anniversary. Karen
was 48.
It is a testament to Our Lady that several members
of the nursing staff who cared for her husband back
in 1989 – Matthew Stafford, Tom Cassidy and then
newly-hired Hari Pal – are still there today (see article
on page 2). “It’s nice to see how much they love their
job,” she said.
She fondly recalls Sister Edwin sitting on the edge of
Tom’s bed, eating chocolate-covered almonds with
him. After his passing Karen and Sister became good
friends.
Twenty two years after her
husband’s death, Karen Gillen
still feels drawn to Our Lady.
Having waited the requisite year after her husband’s
death, Karen began volunteering at Our Lady once a
week as a receptionist. She has been ever since, now
covering Thursday mornings.
“As soon as you walk in that door, there’s some
magic air. And the serenity – I felt such a peace of
mind when my husband was here. They couldn’t
have chosen a better new name.”
Karen recalls Tom’s time at Our Lady tenderly, citing
all the ways staff went above and beyond to tend
to him. Most notably, she said, they enabled him
to attend his older daughter’s October wedding,
getting him showered and shaved and providing
transportation, including an afternoon nap back
The Journey
“That was just part of the care – and the caring,” she
said, her big blue eyes widening. “And it wouldn’t
have happened someplace else, I don’t think.”
It’s par for the course at Our Lady, said Karen, who
belongs to St. Jude in Mahtomedi. “I remember there
was one patient who wanted to ride in a convertible
before she died and the staff made it happen.”
In the following weeks and months, the pull to return
to Our Lady didn’t subside. “It was just a magnet,”
explained Karen, who had just finished her four-hour
shift answering phones.

at Our Lady so he could be well rested for the
reception. In his wheelchair, he dined with Karen,
happily absorbing the scene.
“She’d have a day off every month and she’d call and
say, ‘Well, where should we go?’” Karen said. Their
excursions included a trip to join the monks at St.
John’s University for noon prayer and to the Freight
House in Stillwater.
Sister Edwin had invited Karen and her daughters
to come to Our Lady for Thanksgiving back when
Tom was a patient. Though he died a couple weeks
before Thanksgiving, the Gillen gals decided to
come anyway, beginning a tradition of serving the
patients, their relatives and the hard-working Sisters,
giving them a rare chance to sit and be served.
Karen and her daughters returned at Christmas and
again at Easter. They brought a few bottles of wine,
adding a formality and festivity to the holiday meals.
“We were so excited that we could be there.”
Over the years Karen’s three grandchildren began
joining them, strengthening a family tradition that
the young kids held dear.
It is a special setting, Karen said – a family place, a
sacred space. No matter how busy the retiree may
be, volunteering at Our Lady will always remain a
“priority.”

Wisconsin widower finds purpose at Our Lady
Jim Paul shared his intention to volunteer at Our
Lady of Peace Home before his wife, Georgia, died
there, and she liked the idea.
“I had it in the back of my mind that sometime I would
want to do that,” he said. “I just felt like I owed them
that. I said, ‘When I retire, I’d like to be considered.’”
glove compartment and started flipping through it
frantically. “Oh, here it is: How to land an airplane.
That’s next week’s lesson,” he told the woman at
his side, letting the shock sink in for a few moments
before assuring her he had logged more than 100
hours on the plane.
“I thought if she’ll put up with that kind of stuff, I
guess maybe it’ll work,” he said.
The couple wed in June 1966 and over the years came
to appreciate the many ways they complemented
each other. “She had the better part of what I don’t
have,” said Jim, a lifelong Catholic who belongs to
St. Charles Borromeo in St. Anthony.
He learned her method of balancing the check book
and relished their daily conversation. “She’d ask me,
‘What’s your opinion?’”
Georgia died of breast cancer in June 2009, after a
two-month stay at Our Lady.
“She loved it here,” Jim said. “Loved it.”
Jim Paul always has a welcome smile and greeting for
our patients and visitors.
Now the 79-year-old Chippewa Falls, Wis., native
can’t imagine retired life without spending Monday,
Wednesday and Friday mornings answering phones
and greeting visitors at Our Lady of Peace. It gives
him a sense of structure and purpose.
“The feeling that in some small way I’m trying to help
others in need who are going through what I’ve gone
through – there is some comfort in that, in wanting
to contribute something in return for everything I’ve
received,” said Jim, his brown eyes shining. “The Lord
blessed me with a great family. Geez – those years
have gone by fast! – and then the care that Georgia
received toward the end, that was very helpful.”
Jim has enjoyed a rich and rewarding life, working
as an industrial engineer, earning an MBA, serving as
an Air Force reservist, raising three sons and spoiling
two grandchildren.
He wooed Georgia with a memorable first date:
a flight on a Bonanza Model V35. When it came
time to land, Jim pulled the manual out of the
He would wheel her down to the second-floor lounge,
where their firstborn, Steve, would play classical
music on the piano. She listened contentedly.
Georgia also found peace listening to Jim read her
the Psalms.
“Read some more,” she would urge him.
Volunteering at Our Lady gives Jim a lasting, tangible
connection to his wife, rendered especially poignant
whenever he steps into Room 206, where Georgia
stayed. He appreciates the prudent policy for a
family member to wait a year before volunteering at
Our Lady; it allows the raw emotion to soften a bit.
That said, he’d recommend the gig wholeheartedly –
and not just to widows and widowers but for anyone
looking to make a difference. “Absolutely!”

Keeping Our Lady immaculate
Cleaning Our Lady Of Peace Home is a labor of love
for Letty Gutierrez and Daniel Morales, a couple who
have worked there together for almost nine years.
His tip: “Clean over clean. Sometimes something
looks clean but really it’s not. You clean it again and
then it starts smelling good.”
The Mexican natives, now parents of two, met on a
South Minneapolis bus in 1995. Letty began working
at Our Lady in 2000, and Daniel joined her one year
later after constantly hearing how much she loved
her workplace. When the opportunity came for him
to work there too, he seized it.
Daniel and Letty make a point to be cheerful workers.
“A lot of people comment how we smile when we
work,” she said.
Together, they take great pride in keeping Our Lady
immaculate. Visitors and patients routinely comment
on how clean and fresh the place is, that it doesn’t
smell “like a nursing home.”
Daniel says he’s happy to do his part to make Our
Lady such a special place. “I feel like it’s more than
a job, like I’m here because I’m comfortable being
here,” he said. The staff is not only friendly, he added,
but they also appreciate the importance of cleaning.
Most days Daniel and Letty work together – he’s
scheduled for Sunday through Thursday, she’s
Tuesday through Saturday – and they have their
system down pat.
“She likes to dust,” Daniel said. “I don’t really like
it.”
And, he explained, she’s better at that detail work,
picking up each belonging – picture frames, figurines
– with great care. She’s also sensitive about waiting
until any visitors have left a room, not wanting to
intrude.
Daniel, on the other hand, loves to shampoo carpet.
“I like it when the carpet looks really clean and smells
good,” he said.
The rest of the cleaning responsibilities are shared
– walls, bathrooms. “We disinfect everything,”
Daniel said.
Letty and Daniel love thier jobs, and it shows!
“If I’m mad or sad when I come to work,” Daniel
added, “I just move to another place. I try to be
positive. I use all my energy to try to be my best.”
Being surrounded by so many grace-filled deaths,
even if they aren’t close witnesses, has influenced
this couple. Letty said it’s strengthened her Catholic
faith. Added Daniel: “It changed my direction about
God.”
They are devoted parents to Ricardo, a skateboarding
11-year-old who wants to be a police officer, and
Arely, a gregarious 6-year-old who dreams of being
a teacher.
“When I’m cleaning,” Letty said, “my mind is on my
family all the time.”
dd
“I encountered the custodian in the family room one day and he also
presented himself with the highest degree of kindness and respect.”
Letter of thanks from a patient’s family member

The Journey
The Comfort Cross
By Susan Adam, Director of Pastoral Care Services
We have been blessed recently with a donation of Comfort Crosses, some
of which were hand crafted by Alton Kramer, the father of one of our
hospice nurses. These crosses are blessed and shared with patients who
are in need of the extra strength, a tangible gift in a time of need.
Patients tell me how the crosses provide a feeling of not being alone, that
they are taking the hand of their God when they are experiencing fear.
Such a beautiful sentiment! Our goal is to give our patients a spiritual
end-of-life experience. We are always looking for ways to make those final
weeks more meaningful.
The Comfort Cross has no mystical power, but its symbolism is powerful.
The crosses are designed to fit inside one’s hand, something that can be
tucked away or gripped tightly, reminding of the sacrifice the Lord Jesus made for you and me.
Some find comfort in holding the Comfort Cross when they pray, while others are soothed just by wearing it on
their body, a symbol of the One who will never leave or forsake them.
(Holiday Homecoming continued from page 4)
Many mentioned how comforting it was to be back
at Our Lady and to visit with staff.
“The atmosphere in the chapel with the memorial
ornaments on the Christmas tree, the quiet
background music, and the names of those who
were remembered displayed on the chapel wall was
beyond what words could convey,” said Kim Perez,
volunteer coordinator for Our Lady. “You could see it
in the faces of those who attended.
There was a quiet inspiration and reflection as they
gazed at the tree, sipped hot cider, or chatted
with one of the nurses. It seemed like a peaceful
homecoming for many.”
This year’s Celebration of Life event will be held
on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. For
more information, please contact Mike Randall at
651-789-5029.
(Patient Profile continued from page 10)
At first it was a matter of simply making the connection
and receiving information, Barb said. “We had so
many questions. Cancer is like opening a door to a
whole new room.”
St. Mary’s social worker Gretchen Peterson helped
Barb and Chuck get started. Now Cathy Kramer, a
nurse, and Sara Forrey, a massage therapist, each
pay weekly visits to the Wylies’ home.
“Chuck acquired two more women in his life,” Barb
wrote in an Aug. 9 entry on his CaringBridge site.
“Both are good for him.”
“I’m glad it started,” Chuck said, referring to his
hospice care.
“I feel like we’ve got
new friends,” Barb
added.
Chuck can see that
clearly, even though
he’s blind in his right
eye and deaf in his
left ear. “I’m just
going to live the time
I have now and not
worry about anything
and not feel sad. It’s a
beautiful day out. I feel
good.”
Chuck was Barb’s date to St.
Joseph’s 1962 senior prom,
held at the Calhoun Beach
Hotel.

Giving Thanks
A sampling of notes we received from appreciative family members
“Thank you for your kind follow-up this
past year since mom’s death. Bruce and
staff, we will always remember the love and
care you provided Mom while taking care
of her the last ten days of her life. May Our
Lady of Peace Home continue to thrive and
provide the much needed cancer hospice
care for many years to come.”
“In celebration of Most Holy Trinity’s
final year of service, the Women’s Club is
pleased to present your organization with
a check for $150.00. We feel privileged
and thankful to have been partners with
such a wonderful organization and wish
you continued success.”
“Dear Friends – continue to do the good
work you do. Our Lady is an oasis of love,
compassion, and authentic companionship
for those embarked on their final journey. My
memories of your staff and the sacred environment
comfort and strengthen me yet today. I will always
remain grateful for the care given my mother.”
“This thank-you is much overdue. I cannot express
the depth of my gratitude in how you warmly and
lovingly cared for my father last fall. You have all been
angels to me as I will never forget the comforting
works and the continuous reassurance that ‘he will
be okay.’ I do not think he could get such good care
elsewhere, nor could I get through such a difficult
time without all of you. The last few weeks of my
father’s life reflected his wishes on how he wanted to
live with dignity, respect and integrity. Thank you for
helping him live his life to the fullest during his last
few weeks and moments.”
“Words cannot express my gratitude for the love that
fueled your care for my mother
in her final months. The day she
entered Our Lady, I was able
to breathe a sigh of relief that
made her death manageable.
I hesitate to name names, but
so many of you had a special
bond with mom. So thank you,
from the bottom of my heart, for
embracing her as the gem that
she is, in the midst of a hideous
disease.
Your kindness and expertise
guided me through the most
difficult journey of my life. The
day she died became a parade
of friendly faces, and it was more
beautiful than I ever imagined.
Thank you.”

The Journey
“We are writing to express our gratitude
for the loving care that was given to our
son and brother while he was a resident at
Our Lady. His physical, medical, spiritual,
emotional and everyday cares were met with
the highest standard of professionalism and
excellence. Each and every worker, each to
their own degree of comfort, expressed
such love, kindness, concern, and some
even offered spiritual support. The level
of care offered not only to him, but to our
family members as well, was phenomenal.
I encountered the custodian in the family
room one day and he also presented
himself with the highest degree of kindness
and respect. And my hat off to the cook,
who heard that we just loved the coconut
cookies that were served in the family
room, and one day I was presented with the
recipe for those cookies. Ranger cookies.
“Knowing that the Lord Jesus and Father God is the
keeper of my life. God ending my time cycle on Earth. I
am pulled back and forth by the Holy Spirit and my soul.
Did I do the righteous things and say the right things? Did
I help and care when I could? I hope I did. Was I faithful
to do everything for my family then friends that I could?
All this time spent searching my mind and heart. Is it
complete? This letter is to let all the people know that I am
thankful for every person that touched my life and gave
me a better quality of life in my last days; giving me time
to rest and think clearly with controlled pain; allowing me
to do the little things we take for granted and enjoy the
beautiful things around us. I ask you Lord Jesus for your
blessings upon these people and their families and their
faith be in you Lord Jesus. Amen.”
6
This letter was written by one of our patients during his stay with
us. He had the letter mailed to our staff at Our Lady of Peace
Home. It arrived on the day that he died.
Yours is such a comfortable and warm
place to be and he was there for a long
time. Almost three months. The family was
beginning to think he had canceled his trip to heaven
and decided to stay right there. I can’t say that I’d
have blamed him. But…that was not meant to be,
so…his transition to the next world was pain free,
peaceful and we were able to be there with him. We
give our thanks first to God and then to you for all
that you provided. We pray for God’s blessings on
each and every one of you and all the people you
care for.”

Our Lady of Peace
Memorial Brick Garden Patio
Our Lady of Peace Home recently began a landscaping project to make
our beautiful grounds more accessible to patients and their families. As
a part of that project, we will be installing a Memorial Brick Garden
Patio. Engraved bricks are available for a donation of $150. Each
4” x 8” brick will be personalized with the name of the person you wish
to remember.
Placing a brick in our Garden Patio is a permanent way to celebrate the
life of someone dear to you while also supporting Our Lady’s mission
of providing free care to our patients and their families. The patio, located in our backyard, will be built in
the spring of 2012. A dedication event will follow. We envision a serene garden setting that donors can visit,
locate their loved ones’ bricks and pause to reflect on their lives.
If you would like to purchase a brick to remember someone dear to you, please use the enclosed envelope
to place your order. Thank you in advance for your support.
