Happy New Year
Well it looks as though we have made it through another year. I want to thank all of our members for
their continued support during these tough economic
times. I would also like to thank the Board of Directors for the tireless effort that they have shown this
last year. As our membership continues to grow, our
causes and goals are always ahead of us. They continue to need our attention and support. The Board of
Directors would not be able to reach our full potential
without the endless efforts of our Executive Assistant,
Brenda McNalley. Thank you Brenda for all the tasks
that you have accomplished this past year.
Let’s look to 2010 for continued growth and success
both personally and professionally. We wish everyone
happiness, prosperity and a Happy New Year in 2010.

Open Permits
Attention All Contractors
Final Reminder
Do You Have an Expired Permit?
The City of Marathon wants to resolve all of the expired
permits in the City and perform inspections for safety issues. The City plans to accomplish this goal by February
1st, 2010.
For a short time, the Building Department will be charging
a $10 fee to clear a permit that expired prior to January 1,
2009 that did not have final inspections. After February 1,
2010, the fee will go back up to $65 to clear these expired
permits.
Many residents are surprised to find that they have expired
permits, due to them or their contractor not getting a final
inspection on their permits. Some of these expired permits
were issued prior to Marathon becoming a City. This be-
comes a problem for the homeowner when they go to sell
their house, or in a worse case, there could be safety issues
involved. It seems during the real estate boom, while there
may have been expired permits attached to the real estate
number, no one seemed to notice, but now the banks are
looking closer than ever.
The City has options available to the homeowner to remedy
the situation and revise the records: If you produce evidence that the final inspection was approved, the City of
course will correct their records. For a short time as mentioned above, the administrative permit is available for $10
that will enable the City to perform a visual inspection of
the completed project and document final inspection approval and record it to clear the expired permit. Ignoring
your expired permit may interfere with future real estate
title searches or transactions, and it may cost you more
later. Please see the friendly City Building Department Staff;
they are ready to assist you to expedite the clean up all of
the expired permits.

Recycling: Get your act together!
Did you know that the State of Florida has mandated (that’s
an order) all Counties to recycle 75% of their waste by 2020?
At last count, in 2007, Monroe was recycling 9% of total
waste. This Counties goal is 35–40% by 2014…..we had
better get our act together if we are to meet this order!
No way is my household doing that percentage! Just taking a
guess, we may, and this might be a stretch, be doing 10%. I
know because, like all good husbands, it is my job to take out
the trash. We have 2 bins in the kitchen and the one for
recyclables gets emptied about every 8 to 10 days verses the
regular trash which gets emptied every day.
Waste Management is giving out 8 ½”x 11 ½” “Recycling
Only” colored stickers, a list of what and what-not to recycle. WM has stacks of these for the taking. It will help you
determine what is to be collected.
The Green Initiative Task Force is an appointed group task
force set up by the commissioners to get this Counties act
together on being Green, recycling being only one aspect. At
my last board meeting we had guest speakers Colleen Murphy, recycling coordinator, and Rosa Washington, solid waste
administrator, both of whom work for the County, gave an
update to GITF on recycling. Both women are dedicated to
making recycling a reality in the Florida Keys.
Some of the topics discussed:
Education: An outreach program to the public, including
our schools, is a way to bring this issue to the forefront of
our everyday lives. All parts of the program would be presented in both Spanish and English. This goes for our County
buildings and workers plus the commercial and industrial
companies and workers in the County. The County has
taken a big first step for Colleen Murphy was just hired and is
up for the challenge.
Making recycling mandatory for each household: This
would be difficult to enforce. What can be done? Do we
want to assign a code enforcement officer to each hauler to
look in each trash can in front of every house? In addition,
Solid waste/Recycling Dept. has no code enforcement authority.
Mandatory commercial Recycling: Making it mandatory
for commercial and industrial businesses to recycle was mentioned and could be enforced including: “Mandatory construction and demolition recovery”. Do I have your
attention now!
According to Rosa our industry generates 30% of the total
waste collected in Monroe County. We need to pull together as a group and reduce the waste generated and start
recycling more. If we do not we will be forced to do it.
If the state wants us to recycle 75% of our total, and the
contractors are generating 30% of that total, well, we may
as well have a big red circle painted on our backs. Contractors are looking like the big culprit here. The last thing we
need is code enforcement rummaging thru our trash at the
job site and giving us a fine for throwing away those morning foam coffee cups from the 7-Eleven. Contractors in this
County need to get proactive on trash and we had better
start now.
Contractors generate a lot of scrap wood, plastic, steel, and
cardboard just to mention a few, and 75% of that needs to
be recycled. Maybe our haulers need to help in this by having multi-bin 20-yard dumpsters. Or we could just use one
20-yard for scrap wood and have 3 or 4 smaller dumpsters
for paper, metal, plastic. Logistics can be an issue on small
sites, I know, but the point is we can do it. We can make it
happen. And we had better do it before we are
forced.
I see the possibility of “Green Jobs” coming from this by
developing a “Recycled Product Market” here in Monroe
County. By keeping all of your scrap wood separated it can
be reused. I have seen this done on large industrial assembly lines already and there is a market for steel, plastic, cardboard and paper. If enough contractors do it, well…. we’ve
created jobs and reduced our trash.
So we would like to hear from you, let the Florida Keys
Contractors Association know your thoughts on recycling,
some ways of improving the way we go about it. E-mail us
at: [email protected]
Let’s help Colleen and Rosa meet their 75% goal by showing
them we’re doing our part.

New Members Welcome
We welcome all new members into our organization by acknowledging them in our newsletter with a
brief description of what services and products they offer.
This month we welcome: The Weekly Newspapers and TLC Interiors and Exteriors.
The Weekly Newspapers, Jason Koler, Editor/
Publisher
Already boasting the largest newspaper circulation in the
Florida Keys, The Weekly Newspapers continue to be the
only locally-owned and operated publishing company covering South Florida.
Founded in 2003, ownership of the company transferred to
the Weekly Editor, Jason Koler, and his wife, Kate, in August of 2006. Since then, Kate & Jason have built upon the
founding principles of providing “entertaining community
news showcasing the eccentric characters and tropical locations of the Florida Keys.” In the spring of 2009, Jason’s sister, who spent nearly a decade as a TV news anchor, joined
the family business as the Key West Bureau Chief.
Besides the community newspapers distributed throughout
the Keys and South Florida, The Weekly Newspapers also
produce a bi-weekly real estate guide and lifestyle magazine,
Tropical Living, and the official hurricane preparation guides
for the City of Key West, Village of Islamorada, City of
Marathon and Monroe County. In 2006, the Weekly added
the Boot Key Harbor Cruiser’s Guide to their credits. We
are currently working with the Contractors Association to
produce a home owner’s contractors information magazine
for early 2010.
Now celebrating their seventh year of business, the Weekly
Newspapers continue to be a leading supporter of area or-
ganizations like the Marathon Jaycees, Grace Jones Daycare
Center, Rotary Clubs of the Florida Keys, the Pigeon Key
Foundation, the Florida Keys’ Domestic Abuse Shelter and
other non-profits of South Florida.
For more information, please contact Jason, Kate, or Josie
Koler by calling (305) 743-0844, or emailing
[email protected]. The Weekly Newspapers are also
available online at www.keysweekly.com.

American Cancer Society Relay for Life Walkathon
The annual American Cancer Society's (ACS) Relay for Life
(RFL) walkathon is in a few short months and more teams
are needed.
The Middle Keys event is 9-10 April 2010 at Commercial
Park Amphitheater, the Lower Keys event is 23-24 April at
George Mira Field, and the Upper Keys event is 14-15 May
at Coral Shores HS. RFL is ACS's signature event and is
actually the world's largest nonprofit fundraiser with events
held in over 20 countries and almost 5,000 cities in the US
alone.
Is there enough interest among our members to form an
FKCA umbrella team? Teams can be any age, and can be
family, friends, co-workers, or whomever. Team sizes range
from 2 people up to 20 people if you want, with 8-15 being
the best team size. Teams conduct pre-event fund raising
activities and then, for the actual relay, must have one team
member walking the track at all times for an 18 hour, overnight period as a symbolic show of defiance and perseverance. Please consider joining an existing team or forming a
new team for this fun and life altering event.
See www.relayforlife.org for more details. Contact Don
