2014 Walsh University Annual Report
Sed Deus Dat
I N C R E M E N T U M
For more than 50 years, by many measures, Walsh University has been
extremely successful.
This October, we were reminded of our founding definition of success when Walsh University welcomed
and honored members of the first graduating class back to campus for their 50th Anniversary class reunion.
These 47 gentlemen gambled on a tiny, two-building campus with the faith that this fledgling college would
become a vibrant institution of higher education.
We’ve all heard the accounts of that first day on November 17, 1960. Planks of plywood were lain across
muddy walkways as young men trudged into College Hall in jackets and ties. Brother Thomas Farrell,
Walsh’s first president, commemorated the occasion with an opening address that explained exactly how
Walsh would measure its success. It would not be by the size of its campus, number of buildings or through
its athletic teams. Walsh could judge itself successful by the quality and contributions of its graduates.

We look forward to another successful year. Together, with God’s blessing, we will ensure that the Walsh
legacy will continue for generations to come.

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
7 – 12
The following pages highlight a small sampling of the many new initiatives at Walsh over the past year. But they
tell only a part of our story. The achievements of the alumni featured in this report provide a snapshot of the
more than 12,000 graduates who have gone on to make meaningful contributions in their own communities,
while also helping to extend the Walsh mission of service to our greater global society.
None of this would be possible without our committed donors who support our founding mission through
generosity towards Walsh University. We are truly blessed by your contributions that aid in our efforts
to build distinction in our academic programming, attract talented faculty and students, and sustain our
mission of service locally and abroad.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
5
Academic innovation, community service and a global perspective – the three themes of this Annual Report –
have helped to define Walsh University today. But it is our success, and Walsh’s legacy, that continues to be
honored by the endeavors and accomplishments of our graduates who leave Walsh’s campus and become
contributing, caring and successful citizens of the world.

Pre-Occupational Therapy. Walsh also
added two new minors in Forensics and
Actuarial Science and introduced revised
programs in Chemistry and Sociology,
illustrating a commitment to program
development that is relevant and responsive
to current workforce demands. Walsh’s
new Master of Occupational Therapy
program is one of only six in Ohio.
In the newly formed School of Arts
and Sciences, 10 high-impact practices
have become the focus and foundation of
the School’s mission to develop as a regional leader in sciences and the liberal
arts education through the integration of
the following: First-Year Seminars
and Experiences, Common Intellectual
Experiences, Learning Communities,
Writing-Intensive Courses, Collaborative
Assignments and Projects, Undergraduate
Research, Diversity/Global Learning,
Service Learning, Community-Based
Learning, Internships, and Capstone
Courses/Projects.
The new Center for Science Innovation
building, opening in the spring semester,
will facilitate student learning through
state-of-the-art learning and research labs,
including Exercise Science, Human
Anatomy, Advanced Chemistry, Occupational
Therapy and Physics. The 15,000-squarefoot, two-story building will also include
space for faculty and corporate research
partners and a dedicated space to showcase
research innovations happening on
Walsh’s campus.
A Partnership with Stark Entrepreneurship
Alliance (SEA) will provide resources to help entrepreneurs succeed. SEA is a
collaborative initiative providing assistance
to companies that are developing new
businesses into successful enterprises. The
partnership with the SEA reflects Walsh’s
mission to support the development of
entrepreneurial activity in Stark County.
An increased emphasis and commitment
to creating unique research opportunities
on campus has Walsh students involved
in hands-on research in areas such as cancer,
cardiovascular health, water purity and
safety, physical therapy, hydraulic fracking
and more.
The newly established Health Sciences
Division oversees Walsh’s Physical Therapy
and brand new Occupational Therapy
programs, as well as other health science
academic programs as developed. The high
demand for science and healthcare related
employees in Northeast Ohio makes this
field one of the most marketable of the
21st Century.
Through Faculty Learning Communities,
E-Learning Training, and the Faculty Fellows Program, Walsh faculty members
are active participants leading the
transformative change in the classroom.
Faculty Fellows were challenged in 2013
to redesign a traditional, lecture-based
course into an active learning classroom
through the integration of iPads and other
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) technology.
New interactive classrooms were developed
in the Hannon Center and Betzler Social
and Behavioral Sciences Center. The
flexible learning spaces are BYOD wireless
rooms for any smart device, such as tablets,
laptops or smartphones. Faculty members
will use technology and collaborative
learning strategies in coursework that best
utilizes the room and its technology.
Architectural concepts have been
completed for Walsh’s newest building,
an academic learning center. Developed in
response to the changing needs of present
and future students, the new learning center
will be designed to encourage global
experiences for students and economic
development for the entire community.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
As Walsh continues to enhance its academic programming through the development of
innovative and transformative ideas, it is with the enduring commitment to the University’s
founding mission: to create leaders in service to others. With 100 percent of the student
body participating in service work locally and abroad, community volunteerism and academic
service learning courses are not only beneficial for those receiving aid, but they are also
valuable learning tools. Universities like Walsh that are providing student engagement
through service and global learning opportunities are the best at preparing students for
employment in the 21st Century. Participating students are able to enhance their oral and
written communication skills while demonstrating to potential employers their abilities to
manage multiple priorities, problem solve and collaborate with others while sustaining
Walsh’s mission to create leaders in service to others.
The James B. Renacci Government
Scholars Program was designed to
encourage the next generation of
Americans to pursue a career in public
service. Made possible by a personal gift
from Representative Renacci, the program
funding enables students to intern

Washington D.C. or in a state capitol
city—experiences they might not
otherwise be able to afford it.
The first annual Ohio Hunger
Dialogue was held to seek solutions to
domestic and global hunger through the
teaching, research, and service activities of
Ohio’s colleges and universities. Based on
the models of dialogues already held in
Kansas and North Carolina, Ohio was
the third state to host a state-wide
meeting of higher educators devoted to seeking hunger solutions.

mission of service abroad, but also cultivate the development of skills most in demand by
today’s employers. As global learning programs and the number of international students
attending Walsh continue to grow, the benefits of a multi-cultural experience are evident with
students actively learning about the world in which we live. Studies have shown that students
who interact with a culture different from their own on a daily basis are enhancing their own
self-confidence, leadership, quantitative skills and other abilities through relationships that
enrich their lives.
In total, 14 separate groups spent time
traveling internationally during the 2013-14
school year. Through Global Learning
Programs, students provided healthcare
services to those in need, furthered their
education and developed a deeper
understanding of a culture different from
their own.
The Office of Global Learning joined
the Institute of International Education’s
Generation Study Abroad initiative to
double the number of students studying
internationally in five years.
Global Learning Program highlights from
the past year included the internationally
publicized encounter with Pope Francis
accepting a heart-shaped card from Walsh
students on the same day he was named 5

Time magazine’s Person of the Year. In
addition, the Blouin Global Scholars also
embarked on their first trip to Tanzania
to explore the state of hunger in the
developing nation.
A DeVille School of Business student team
participated in a global service project to
develop a master plan for the construction
of the Sacred Heart University in Gulu,
Uganda, that included the tracking and
purchase of hundreds of essential items
such as tables and drywall. Each student
gained valuable real-world experience
that also counted towards a Project
Management Certification.
Walsh became a founding and participating
partner in the Global Learning Partnership
that included Oranim Academic College,
Israel; The Ohio State University; University
of Colorado at Denver; and Wheelock
College in Boston, Massachusettes. The
GLP hosted a special three-day international
academic symposium where more than
40 scholars, students, teachers and
administrators from Israel and the U.S. gathered at Walsh to learn about how
technology developments are changing
the future of education in the 21st century.
Walsh will continue to increase global
networking opportunities through
initiatives such as the partnership with
the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF).
Since its inception, the ICF Institute
has advocated that a robust broadband
infrastructure is a critical element to
future economic sustainability. Through
this unique partnership, students have
the opportunity to network with ICF
partners in more than 120 countries.
New programs are in development
including a DeVille School of Business
entrepreneur exchange program with a
university in Sweden and an MBA global
healthcare tour to England, Geneva,
Milan, and Rome. The MBA trip will
include visits with the British National

our commitment to provide students with an affordable, high-quality,
Catholic education.
Walsh University achieved its 17th consecutive balanced budget in
fiscal year 2014. Operating revenues for the period were $73.1 million.
Total operating expenditures totaled $72.6 million, generating a
$479,000 operating surplus.
The University also continues to assess the design of the Global
Learning Center, a center that will provide students with a unique
curriculum set in an interactive, technology-driven space that develops
and inspires competence in the global marketplace.
Walsh continues to operate on a very narrow operating margin but
continues to earmark incremental revenue for academics, additional
personnel and capital improvements.
Finally, we began construction of the Center for Science Innovation,
a 15,300-square-foot addition to the Timken Natural Sciences
Center, to accommodate the exponential growth and expansion of
Walsh University’s science programs over the last several years. This
addition will facilitate student learning through the addition of
learning and research labs, an advanced chemistry lab, classrooms to
support exercise science and occupational therapy, office space for
faculty and corporate research partners, and a space to showcase the
research innovation happening on Walsh’s campus. The building will
be operational for spring semester 2015.
Your contribution actually extends beyond Walsh’s borders and
benefits the greater community by upholding the University’s founding
mission to develop leaders in service to others, with graduates who
generously give of their time and talent to both their local and
global communities.
Operating revenue exceeded the revenue forecast by $2.7 million
or 3.9%. More than half of the increase can be attributed to strong
retention in undergraduate enrollment and growth in graduate
programs. Auxiliary program revenue generated from housing
operations, dining services and facility rentals continues to rise as
we intentionally grow our resident population and bring the outside
community on campus.
Tuition income accounted for 79% of total revenue, while auxiliary
operations made up approximately 16% of the total. The remaining
5% was attributed to other revenue sources such as fees and charges
and contribution income.
The graduate programs continue to generate significant revenue for
the University ($6.5 million in fiscal year 2014), with the Doctor of
Physical Therapy and Master of Business Administration leading the
way. In addition, the master’s in nursing and master’s in education’s
endorsement programs recorded significant growth over the prior year.
Auxiliary program revenue as mentioned earlier contributed $12 million
to the overall revenue picture, or a 5.75% increase over projections.
This growth is primarily due to an increased number of on-campus
residents, parking permits, and facility rentals.
In terms of capital improvements, the University prudently directed
$1.5 million of operating surplus towards numerous capital projects
in support of academic programming, administration, residence life,
and athletics during the fiscal year.

Other major projects completed include construction of a full use
restroom facility on the north property, known as Hoover Park, to
accommodate the park and athletic fields and the addition of a new
parking lot. Throughout the year, Walsh purchased significant
equipment in support of academic, residence life and athletic programs,
with the most exciting being the Anatomage Tables. These virtual

Sed Deus Dat
I N C R E M E N T U M
Each year we publish and distribute our Annual Report as just one small way to
thank and recognize all of our donors who have generously contributed to Walsh
University during the past fiscal year. It is through the encouraging support from
our benefactors that new academic programs and initiatives like those listed in
these pages are developed and sustained throughout the year.
Thank you to those who have helped successfully launch the We Believe capital
campaign in support of our goals to increase the student scholarship endowment,
strengthen our annual Walsh Fund and provide the necessary infrastructure to
support academic innovation through a new state-of-the-art academic center
and construction of the Center for Science Innovation, on schedule to open this January. We are also deeply
moved and humbled by those individuals who have remembered Walsh University in their estates and
through personal planned gifts.
The influence of each gift extends far beyond our campus boundaries. Walsh University is creating a positive
impact through service and global learning programs that offer aid to those in need; lectures, exhibits and
fine arts performances that inspire and entertain; curriculum initiatives tailored specifically towards workforce
needs; and advanced research in areas such as cancer, water purity/safety, cardiovascular health, and more.
Because of your continued generosity, more students are able to pursue a Walsh education through scholarships
that meet their financial needs. Each gift directly impacts our ability to attract talented faculty and staff
members, implement new technology, pursue endeavors that promote growth and sustainability, and
preserve our lasting legacy, Walsh’s founding mission to create leaders in service to others.
We are grateful for your involvement, commitment in our vision and for the trust you continually place in
us to use each gift wisely.
Thank you for investing in our future.

Job Title: Video Producer
Place of Employment:
Harvard University
“Walsh allowed me to gain a diverse
range of professional experience
through internships and service
learning classes. Walsh’s career
advancement office also worked
closely with me to help me find new
and interesting internships. Having
worked for both non-profit and
for-profit companies through service
learning, I was able to explore and
gain new skill sets such as marketing,
public relations writing, graphic
design, broadcasting, and video.”

Job Title: Registered Nurse
Place of Employment: Medical
Intensive Care Unit, Cleveland Clinic
“My position in the MICU is extremely
rewarding. Every day I am given the
opportunity to touch someone’s life.
I provide advanced medical care;
help save lives; and when death is
imminent, create a peaceful dying
experience. Walsh provided me with
the education I needed to confidently
transition from the role of a student to
a professional.”

“The skills – both professional and
personal – that I learned at Walsh
have been instrumental in my career
development. Walsh’s very strong
focus on liberal arts and Catholic
education allowed me to learn job
skills that I would not have gained if
I went to a school where I was going
to lecture halls with hundreds of other
students. The personal attention that
Walsh’s faculty provides its students
truly sets the school apart.”

“The service opportunities, Campus

that are available are all excellent
chances to develop personally and

life has in store for you, and I often
find myself drawing upon knowledge

“Walsh prepared me for my current job
by teaching me the information and
core knowledge that I needed to be a
successful first-year teacher. Walsh’s
education program gets you out of
the ‘college classroom’ and into the
real-world schools through field hours
starting with the very first education
class you take. From the beginning,
I was exposed to many different
educational settings, and I was able
to decide what I really wanted to do
in my career.”

WALSH UNIVERSITY BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Walsh University is guided by a Board of Directors made up of dedicated individuals with unique leadership experience from
various backgrounds in education, business, politics, and service organizations. Walsh’s Board members represent a diverse
mix that includes the Brothers of Christian Instruction, the Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, business leaders, financial
experts, religious clergy, judges, attorneys, community partners, education professionals and alumni. As a unified Board,
members combine their expertise to review the activities of the University while carefully balancing future development with
the Brothers’ founding vision.
As committed custodians of Walsh’s mission, it is the Board’s responsibility to oversee the strategic direction of the
University, define administrative roles, monitor committees and approve annual accounts and budgets each year. But most
importantly, it is the Board’s duty to preserve and promote Walsh’s Catholic Heritage and founding traditions that have
made our University the choice of more than 12,000 students over the past 54 years.
