RAVELLO FESTIVAL 2014: “SOUTH”
South exists as a mental category as well as the geographical
concept. This South denotes something that differs from
convention and normality (however "normal" anything can
actually ever be said to be). There exists, quite simply, another
South. Choosing to favour and pursue diversity, avoiding
shallow complacency and facile recrimination, is a stimulating
way to reappropriate cultural models and life styles which may
be less universally endorsed but not for this reason less
objectively
valid.
Far from being motivated by self regard, the decision to give a
form and a voice to the many "Souths" scattered throughout
today's world is in fact the key to adopting a language that is
universal, harmonious, polyphonic, and never content with
stereotypes.

TONY GRAGG A RAVELLO
One of the great protagonist of the Ravello Festival 2014 will the
British artist Tony Cragg, whose monumental sculptures have
made him one of the leading lights on the international sculpture
scene. The exhibition, curated by Flavio Arensi, links the spaces of
the Villa and the Auditorium Niemeyer in a richly evocative series
of sculptures that enter into a dialogue with one of the most
extraordinary beauty spots in Italy. Six sculptures will be
juxtaposed with the flowing lines conceived by the Brazilian
architect of genius on the concourse in front of the Auditorium,
while in the Villa the works will be set up in the gardens, in the
ancient kitchen range with its Norman feel, and in the former
Chapel. The work to be shown in this latter venue is called
Congregation and was conceived as a homage to the sea, recalling
ancient wooden vessels studded with hundreds of steel hooks.

SAN PANTALEONE FEAST
In the “heart” of summer, the heart of all the citizens of
Ravello awakes to celebrate San Pantaleone Feast, the
patron of the town. Walking around Ravello’s narrow
streets in these days, you can feel the whole village in
trepidation, waiting for the Saint’s miracle: the dried
blood preserved in its silver ampoule, traditionally
liquefies early in the morning of the 27, on the
anniversary of the martyrdom. If so, the church bells ring
wildly, the faithful cheer and gather to kiss the ampoule,
and Ravello is believed to be safe for awhile at least (if
the blood fails to liquefy, it is seen as a bad omen for the
city). To honor the Saint a procession takes place: the
silver bust of San Pantaleone leads the religious parade
which goes throught out the town, followed by fireworks
and concerts to end the celebrations in the charming
square of Ravello.

TORELLO ON FIRE
Rising close by Ravello, overlooking the
whole Amalfi Coast, Torello - Ravello’s
hamlet - is world-wide famous for its
incredible fireworks held traditionally once a
year, on the third Sunday of September. The
parade is dedicated to the ‘Vergine
Addolorata’ and the pyrotechnic show is
always preceded by the religious procession,
where the Virgin dressed in black, is carried
through the streets on the shoulders of
some volunteers, drawing a crowd of
believers. The fireworks, perfectly visible
from the Hotel Caruso Restaurant, are
absolutely unmissable!

The summer of religious festivals on the Amalfi Coast
starts with the Festival of Sant’Antonio (St. Anthony) in
Amalfi. For the occasion, an unique procession takes
place: the statue of Sant’ Antonio is carried slowly by
the men attending from the church near the Hotel

follows to Atrani’s beach where the statue, all the
religious parade and and the marching band are
loaded onto boats and continue for a boat
procession from Atrani to Conca dei Marini to salute
the church of Sant’ Antonio there before returning to
Amalfi to continue on land through Amalfi and back to
the church.
At night there is a large fireworks display over the
harbor of Amalfi.

to some of the other religious festivals in June,
the pretty piazza at the center of the village is
always decked out with lights and decorations.
