What Tall Ship Tenacious does best
What to Expect
Launched new in 2000, Tenacious was the largest wooden sailing
ship built in the UK for over 100 years. Like her sister ship Lord
Nelson, she was designed and built to enable people of all physical
abilities to sail side by side on equal terms. In practical terms this
means wide decks, large platforms aloft, a wheelchair ‘runway’ out
on the bowsprit and a whole host of design features enabling
everyone to do their bit to sail an impressive 714 ton square rigger
with 21 sails. Tenacious has crossed the Atlantic, explored the
Caribbean and been well tested in wild weather, deep ocean.
Tenacious is a barque with square sails. The only break with tradition
are the t’gallant and royal sails which can be furled from the deck,
but there is nothing to stop you climbing to the top of the mast for
the view. The upper and lower topsails and courses are stowed out on
the foot ropes. Going aloft is not compulsory. Blind sailors, wheelchair
users and crew with all sorts of disabilities have been hoisted or
guided up the mast. To keep the ship sailing day and night the voyage
crew is divided into groups of about 10 people. Even when not on
watch, you may be called to help with manoeuvres like bracing the
yards. All help to clean ship and there is a rota to help in the galley.
GAP Year or Career Break Challenge
If you are taking time out to re appraise your life or do something
worthwhile, then a voyage on Tenacious Nelson can be both reaffirm your faith in human nature and take you on some interesting
paths. The training on board is well structured and keen sailors with
good people skills may be invited back as volunteer crew.
Tenacious operates a buddy system, which pairs able bodied and
physically disabled people together. Everyone is there to help one
another and share the experience, so the buddy system works both

UK Day Sails - Ports from Edinburgh to Jersey
Always wanted to sail a big tall ship ? At 65 metres long, Tenacious
is an impressive square rigger. The ships crew take their day sails
seriously as many people try them before booking a longer trip. All
ages from 12 to 99 can participate. No experience is needed as full
training is given and it takes teamwork to hoist sails. There will
usually be an opportunity to climb aloft if you dare.
Sailing Holidays from UK Ports
If you are looking for a unique and active holiday then Tenacious
offers some great 5-7 day voyages where you can learn to sail a
square rigger and work alongside fellow crew from all walks of life.
Tall Ships Races in Europe
Tenacious is off on a big adventure to Australia via the Caribbean
and South Pacific in 2016, so she will not be racing in Europe, but we
have plenty of ships you can race on next year.
Journey to the Far Side of the World
n 2012-14 British tall ship Lord Nelson - the smaller sister ship to
Tenacious - made history by being the first accessible tall ship crewed
by a mix of able bodied and physically disabled people ever to sail
around the globe. The project opened up a whole new range of
possibilities for the British sail training charity that runs both ships.
Classic Sailing is pleased to be helping them develop a worldwide
audience for these uniquely adapted tall ships, allowing even more
nationalities to sail together as equals.
Caribbean, Central America & South Pacific
In 2015-16 it is now the turn of Tenacious to go off on worldwide
adventures, pioneering a different route across the Atlantic and
Caribbean, through the Panama Canal to Central America, and
embarking on the ultimate island hopping route across the South
Pacific to a new operational base in Australia.

The ‘Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity’ are encouraging
injured servicemen to apply for grants to sail on Tenacious

Tenacious History
What to Bring
The ship is owned by a British Sail Training
Charity. With her smaller sister ship Lord Nelson
they have taken over 36 000 people to sea.
Shoes with a good grip for deck & aloft
Rubber Boots or second pair of shoes for wet
weather or getting in/out of dinghies
Swim suit & beach towel/ hand towel
Suntan lotion & sunglasses
Sun hat / warm hat, scarves, gloves
Clothes that dry quickly. Mix of warm,
waterproof & windproof layers

There are lockers but no space for rigid
suitcases. Please pack in a soft rucksack/ bag.

Accommodation
Below decks there are bunks in the fo’c’sle for
the majority of the guest crew. There are also
two person cabins along the main corridors for
wheelchair users and their buddies. Bathrooms
on board have specifically designed toilets and
showers for those with more severe disabilities
as well a separate WC and showers for able
bodied crew. Completely separate from the
cabins is the mess room with tables ideal for
writing a diary or playing a board game.
Adjacent is the bar with comfy seating so there
is a big area for whole crew gatherings. At sea
you can buy alcoholic drinks if you are not on
watch or about to climb the rigging. Below has
