MESSAGE OF THE HONOUR COMMITTEE PRESIDENT
For the fourth consecutive year, Politecnico di Milano is hosting Nanoforum in its Bovisa-Durando campus.
Before it has even begun, we can
be certain that Nanoforum 2008
will be surging, compared to its previous editions, and this is something
we are very pleased for.
This certainty especially derives from
the number of companies involved,
remarkably higher than in previous
editions, and from the significant international attendance that is expected.
This shows how nanotechnologies
are not confined to academic research anymore, but are actually becoming an important instrument for
technological innovation.
The interest in nanotechnologies is
constantly growing and the demonstration that they are an important
key for the development of our country is the interest that we are able to
arouse abroad.
In the last editions we have registered the presence of some foreign
operators.
This year, thanks to the meaningful
contribution of ICE (the Italian insti-
tute for foreign trade), we are glad
to host 7 official delegations, coming
from China, India, Japan, Russia, Singapore, Turkey and USA.
The delegates are interested in researches and processes developed
by Italian companies and research
centres.
We think that it can be a meaningful contribution for the quality of the
“made in Italy”.
I would like to close my speech with
a few acknowledgments:
- to all those who accepted my invitation to participate in the Committee of Honour, to prove that the
name of Politecnico di Milano is still
held in high consideration
- to all the friends who found the time
to participate in the opening session,
that is expected to be highly valuable
- to members of Scientific Committee,
and in particular to the colleagues
at Politecnico di Milano who mostly devoted themselves to organizing
this event, professors Carlo Bottani
and Alberto Cigada
- to ITER, the organizer of an event
the industry felt the need for, that
thought the academia would have

MESSAGE OF THE PROMOTING COMMITTEE COORDINATOR
Nanotechnologies are ever more a
reality. Though nanoscience dates
back to the birth period of quantum mechanics (1900-1926), offering the deepest key-concept enabling its technological exploitation:
quantum confinement, only rather recently the first significant conscious nanoapplications have become available. I say conscious as
an unaware usage of amazing nanoparticle properties can be found
in the stained glass windows of ancient cathedrals. In the last years the
word nanotechnology attained a
wide audience mainly through some
newspaper articles, among which
both very good pieces of scientific popularization and rather fanciful rubbish. The proper citation of Richard Feynman’s talk There is plenty of room at the bottom (1959) always present. Although most people are aware only of the title, the
reading of that speech is a stimulating experience even today and the
content could perfectly fit the spirit of Nanoforum: a strict connection between basic research and
relevant industrial applications. In
his prophetic lecture Feynman foresaw, among other things, the direct manipulation of individual atoms as a new method of chemical
synthesis. As I already wrote in the
last year introduction, the youngest delegates of Nanoforum 2008
could hardly fully realize how revolutionary was Feynman’s dream at
that time, mainly for the technologists. Just to make an instance, since
1982, with an impressive growth of
new achievements, the scanning
tunnelling microscope (STM) allows
imaging and manipulation of individual atoms. Besides making possible to check the quantum theories
of atomic structure of surfaces, this
new microscopic tool is also a useful device both for materials science
and engineering and for emerging
nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine. Direct imaging and manipulation of atoms is only an important instance among the many obtained results. To cite less exotic applications, even grace to excellent
national research, we hope to see
in the next years OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diods) substituting
convential bulbs in automotive applications, quantum dots photovoltaic cells, nanoparticle drug delivery
and other new technological products limited only by nature laws and
designer creativity. As for the previous editions, Nanoforum 2008 also
wants to put forward the message
that several nanotechnologies are
ready as present, not only future,
crucial industrial technologies.

MESSAGE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE REGIONE LOMBARDIA
I am very pleased to extend my welcome and that of the Region of Lombardy to the Fourth Edition of Nanoforum, which this year again proves
itself to be a major international
event for the exchange of knowhow and experience in a highly
strategic sector for the growth and
competitiveness of our economy.
Nanotechnologies represent the
new frontier in innovation, the leading edge in promoting technological development due to their vast
scope for application in numerous
fields ranging from pharmaceuticals
and agriculture to the environment
and security. While from a strictly economic perspective electronics
and materials technology currently play a dominant role, the impact
of nanotechnologies in the field of
health care and also from a social
viewpoint is destined to become increasingly important: “nanomedicine” will in fact literally revolutionise medical practice, providing new
and more effective diagnostic tools
and innovative care systems that
nurture the introduction of patientspecific therapies.
For this reason, the Region of Lombardy has opted to invest in this
sector, not only by promoting initiatives and research projects - including the opening of an authentic technological district focused on
advanced materials that earned
the recognition in 2004 of the Ministry for Education, Universities and
Research - but also by encouraging
the process of the transfer of technology from the research sector to
enterprise.
Through our commitment, we have
already supported the creation of
nine centres of excellence in the
fields of biotechnology, genomics,
nanotechnologies and new materials, and are working, in parallel
with leading global research company ST Microelectronics and several Lombardy-based universities
and research centres, towards the
creation of a Nanomedicine Centre - a structure of facilities capable of developing advanced solutions for the early diagnosis and
mass screening of widespread serious illnesses such as cardiovascular
disease and cancer.
We have also taken steps on the international scene, signing important agreements such as that of last
March with the Government of Israel, and these are enabling us to
promote scientific and industrial research, collaboration between research institutes and the exchange
of information and best practices.
We are, however, also aware that
much work still remains to be done
in this field. Innovation is a complex
challenge that involves all sectors
of a region, and one that we aim
to take up through a policy of subsidiarity governance in conjunction
with all stakeholders, be they businesses, universities, research cen-
tres, associations of professionals or
non-profit institutions.
This, then, is the course we intend to
follow, also in view of Expo 2015,
in pursuit of development that is not
short-lived but long-lasting hence
able to create the conditions for the
wellbeing and a higher quality of
life of our citizens.

I am particularly pleased to welcome the international delegation
that the Italian Institute for Foreign
Trade has organized for the first
time at this fourth edition of Nanoforum.
In the last few years nanotechnology in Italy has shown an increasing trend of growth, mainly driven
by a large number of highly specialized small and medium enterprises:
newly created start-up or spin-off
of the industry of microelectronics,
new materials, aerospace, biotechnology and pharmaceutical.
The high potential of innovation of
the Italian nanotechnology is due
to key factors such as a great interest on nanotechnology from typical
“Made in Italy” market sectors and
a strong commitment of both public
and private research organisms.
The interaction between production
and research has a strategic importance for the development of a
competitive and successful industry,
especially in the field of nanotechnology.
The Institute is aware of the importance of nanotechnology for the
Italian industry and has developed
a specific programme that supports
the development of the sector, the
projection on the foreign markets
and the technology transfer between research centres and businesses.
This Special Project for the Development of Nanotechnology is funded by the Ministry for Economic Development and is planned in collaboration with AIRI – Nanotec.it, the
Italian Centre for Nanotechnology and with the representatives of
the major Italian nanotech clusters,
in order to establish common strategies.
This action plan includes a large variety of initiatives - such as participation at the major international
Conventions, organization of seminars and workshops abroad, missions of foreign experts and entrepreneurs in Italy - aimed at paving
the way for industrial and technological partnerships between Italian and foreign companies operating in the field of nanotechnology.

indagini e ricerche finalizzate a restauro, studio e valorizzazione di manufatti di interesse storico-artistico e in particolare a caratterizzazione dei materiali, datazioni, autenticazioni, rilievo 3D, definizione dello stato di conservazione, progettazione e valutazione
degli interventi di restauro e consulenza per la conservazione preventiva. È insediata
presso l’Incubatore di Imprese dell’Università di Torino e prende parte a diversi progetti di
ricerca in stretta collaborazione con l’Università, il CNR ed altri Enti. ADAMANTIO lavora
su incarico di Sovrintendenze, Musei e Enti di tutela oltre che di restauratori, antiquari e
privati. Nel 2008 ADAMANTIO è socio fondatore del Polo Tecnologico Beni Culturali
Fossanova (Te.Be.C s.c.r.l), con sede nel Lazio a Priverno (LT).
Tra i maggiori lavori svolti in ambito pubblico si segnalano studi chimico-fisici su Villa della
Regina (Torino), Villa Medici (Roma), Monumento alla Battaglia di Magenta (Magenta Milano), Palazzo Carignano (Torino), Villa Imperiale di Traiano (Arcinazzo Romano - Roma)
e su alcuni dipinti di Galleria degli Uffizi (Firenze), Galleria Sabauda (Torino), Pinacoteca

Research Institute within the University of California, Los Angeles devoted to
nanoscale research in medicine, engineering and the life and physical sciences.
Basic and applied research is carried on in a 7 story, 17,500 sq. m. building. Memers are drawn from existing UCLA faculty. The California NanoSystems Institute is
exploring the power and potential of organizing and manipulating matter to engineer new integrated and emergent systems and devices, by starting down at the nanoscale level that will advance information technology, energy production, storage
and saving, environmental well-being and diagnosis, and prevention and treatment
of chronic and degenerative diseases. The institut’s demonstrated ability to attract
stellar faculty and top tier students will have a critical impact on the development of
the next generation of scientists, engineers, and artists, who will bring prosperity and
enlightenment to the State of California. To support the research, the CNSI encompasses eight core facilities which include both wet and dry laboratories, equipment
in the form of electron microscopes, atomic force microscopes, X-ray diffractometers,
optical microscopies and spectroscopies, high throughput robitics and class 100 and
1000 clean rooms for projects led by CNSI and other faculty. Each of the following
core facilities will afford critical work space for numerous research projects led by
CNSI and other faculty and will be available to industry and academia.

Il Centro Ricerche Fiat S.C.p.A. (CRF) è stato fondato nel 1976 come polo di riferimento per l’innovazione e la ricerca e sviluppo del Gruppo Fiat. In seguito è stato costituito come Società Consortile per

Centro Ricerche FIAT S.C.p.A. (CRF) was established in 1976 to enable the innovation, research and
development needs of the FIAT Group to be satisfied. The main site of CRF is located near Torino
(Orbassano) in North-West Italy with three branches in Trento, Bari and Foggia. Moreover, advanced R&D
related to lighting and the welding of plastics are conducted at a satellite facility in the Friuli Region of
North-East Italy. With a full-time workforce of more than 850 highly trained professionals, CRF offers a wide
range of technical competencies and is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories for the testing of powertrains, electro-magnetic compatibility, experimental noise and vibration analysis, driving simulation and
virtual reality, in addition to facilities for the development of new materials and manufacturing processes,
opto-electronics and micro-technologies. CRF uses innovation as strategic lever and attributes value to its
results by promoting, developing and transferring innovation in order to enhance product competitiveness

Cyanine Technologies s.r.l. è una start-up fondata nel 2006, dopo aver vinto il secondo premio
alla business plan competition regionale Sart-Cup Piemonte. Cyanine Technologies è insediata
nell’ Incubatore di Imprese Innovative dell’Università di Torino.
Il team imprenditoriale è composto da chimici, biologi e biotecnologi. Le attività dell’azienda vanno
dalla ricerca di base su coloranti fluorescenti organici e complessi organometallici luminescenti allo
scale-up dei processi di sintesi, allo sviluppo di prodotti commerciali per specifiche applicazioni nelle
Life Sciences e nell’energia solare fotovoltaica.
L’azienda è anche fortemente focalizzata nella progettazione e sviluppo di nanomateriali per applicazioni hi-tech. Le competenze presenti in azienda includono la sintesi di nano particelle di silice e titania
funzionalizzate sia bulk che porose, quantum dot di silicio funzionalizzati, nano particelle organiche
fluorescenti auto assemblanti.
Attraverso le collaborazioni esistenti con centri di ricerca accademici e aziende farmaceutiche e biotecnologiche, sono stati anche sviluppati dispositive nanobiotecnologici, quali nanoparticelle fluorescent
funzionalizzate con biomolecole per l’applicazione simultanea nell’imaging cellulare e drug-delivery.
Cyanine Technologies s.r.l. is a start-up company incorporated in 2006, after winning the
second prize at Start-Cup Piemonte regional business plan competition. Cyanine Technologies is settled at the University of Torino Innovative Companies Incubator.
The team is composed of chemists, biologists and biotechnologists. Company activities range from
basic research on cyanine dyes and luminescent organometallic complexes to product synthesis
scale up, as well as product development for specific Life Sciences and solar energy applications.
The company is also strongly focused on the design and development of nanomaterials for hitech applications. Company skills include synthesis of both porous and bulk functionalised silica
and titania nanoparticles, functionalised silicon quantum dots, fluorescent autoassembling organic
nanoparticles.
Through our collaboration with academic research centres, pharmaceutical and biotechnological
companies, we also developed nanobiotech tools, such as bio-functionalised porous fluorescent
nanoparticles, for simultaneous imaging and drug delivery.

I partner di Nanomat hanno costituito un Centro di Competenza diffuso sulle nanotecnologie applicate ai materiali compositi polimerici, ai materiali compositi magnetici, ai rivestimenti innovativi,
ai materiali per l’industria tessile, ai biomateriali e ai beni culturali, che rappresenti un serbatoio di
know-how a disposizione del tessuto industriale regionale.
Per garantire un efficace collegamento con le aziende piemontesi, per coinvolgere il maggior
numero di imprese e per gestire i diversi soggetti coinvolti e le risorse impiegate, Nanomat può
contare sulla collaborazione di Confindustria Piemonte, Unione Industriale di Torino, AMMA, API e
Finpiemonte. Insieme a tali enti Nanomat ha promosso la nascita del Club delle Nanotecnologie,
un’associazione di aziende interessate all’introduzione delle nanotecnologie nei propri processi e
prodotti e alla collaborazione con aziende ed enti internazionali all’avanguardia nel campo.
Nella realizzazione dell’obiettivo si è scelto di adottare una strategia che mira alla diffusione
dell’impiego dei materiali nanostrutturati nelle aziende operanti nel territorio regionale con l’obiettivo di dare una spinta all’innovazione tecnologica principalmente in piccole e medie aziende che
difficilmente sono in grado di portare avanti ricerca nanotech in modo autonomo.

Nanomaterials.it raccoglie le esperienze di due laboratori del Dipartimento di
Chimica Materiali e Ingegneria Chimica “G.Natta” del Politecnico di Milano: il
Laboratorio di ingegneria delle superfici ed il Laboratorio tecnologie chimiche speciali.
Questi due laboratori si sono specializzati nella sintesi elettrochimica di nanostrutture
e nanomateriali e nella catalisi industriale, attraverso collaborazioni con aziende nazionali ed internazionali e finanziamenti istituzionali sia italiani che europei. Risultati
importanti delle attività svolte sono i processi di produzione e gli impieghi dei nanotubi
di carbonio (CNT) e degli ossidi anodici nanoporosi (allumina e titania), entrambi in
fase industrializzazione. Le attività di ricerca riguardano anche lo sviluppo di processi
di sintesi di nanoparticelle di ossidi puri, misti e di metalli supportati, nanofili e nanoparticelle metalliche, film sottili ed ultrasottili.

The National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST) of China is cofounded by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Ministry of Education . It is
a subsidiary non-profit organization of CAS which enjoys full financial allocations with
a status of independent non-profit legal entity.
The NCNST adopts a system that its director takes full responsibilities under leadership
of a governing board. Its first director is Bai Chunli, an academian of CAS. The center
established an academic committee which aids the governing board to determine
important research areas and moving directions of NCNST.  
In NCNST, basic and applied researches in nanoscience have been positioned as the
main research directions.  Its objective is to build a public technological platform and
research base for nanoscience, which is featured with state- of- the- art equipments
and is open to both domestic and international users.
The NCNST mainly consists of following branches, nano-processing & nano-device

Impiegati Ente Pubblico; Docenti; Dirigenti; Altri. Al di là del ruolo istituzionale, l’Ordine vuole porsi

The engineers Orders are recognised by the law as public institutes. The engineers Order of
Milan has been founded in 1928. The President is the chief of the order which has 14 Councillors in Milan. The laws admit the order to safeguard the engineer profession, both like freelance
and as employee and provide to the creation of their own Register. The engineer activity is consider most important for the public interest and to be performed in the respect of the morals, probity and correctness values. Today 11000 engineers of Section A (5 years of academic degree)
are members of the Engineers order of Milan, while 101 of Section B (3 years of academic degree

institutional role, the Order is a point of reference, follows where is going this sector, and collect

Promedia Publishing is  a specialized editor in technical issues. It publishes 3 magazines in two languages (italian/english) dedicated to food & beverages techniques, as Food Machines, Beverage Machines and Rivista del Latte), the Enorama
yearbook, a real ‘vademecum’ about the bottling industry.
In 2004 Promedia becames the new editor of ‘La Chimica & l’Industria’, historical magazine of applicated chemestry world and official houseorgan of Società Chimica Italiana.
In 2007, Promedia publish LAB, a monthly issue dedicated to all laboratory equipments
and methods for analysis applicated in various sectors.
The presence at most important exhibitions all over the world, the propose of great
contens and grafic effect’s magazines, the editing of special edition focused on companies with great care, makes of Promedia Publishing an appreciated and innovative
editorial realty in the economy and industry world.
