BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE

Love Story: The Impact Of
Taylor Swift’s First Decade
When “Tim McGraw” slipped onto Billboard’s Hot C ountry
Songs chart at No. 60 on July 1, 2006, the single earned a
thumbnail breakout synopsis, courtesy of now-deceased
country chart manager Wade Jessen: “Singer gets first national chart
SWIFT
ink exclusively in Billboard. Song
title name-checks fellow artist.”
It was a rather quiet beginning for
Taylor Swift, who in the ensuing
decade managed to conquer country and, in an unprecedented move,
transition fully into life as a pop artist
with her latest album, 1989, without
even a hiccup.
Swift, of course, was a mere 16
years old when she made that “Tim
McGraw” debut, defying a few basic
tenets in the process. She insisted
on writing her own songs, mining
real-life experiences and worming
her way into a format that was historically viewed as a place where
adults sang grown-up songs for other
adults. She had her battles. Radio
research — particularly in the early
years — showed males in the upper demos were chilly. But teenage girls loved her. She became a bonding element for those
girls and their mothers, and — boom! — a country star was born.
In fact, the country landscape is much different today, thanks
in part to Swift and her insistence on following a game plan that
many considered unorthodox.
“It was always really uncanny to
me,” says Cassetty Entertainment
president Todd Cassetty, who
worked with Swift on videos, social media campaigns and at least
one NBC TV special. “In the early
days, she would make decisions that
‘adults’ would question, and she was
always right. She’s just acutely aware
of what her fan base wants.”
Country is viewed much more
favorably in the current media landscape than it was when Swift debuted
in 2006, and while she didn’t create that change alone, it’s safe to say
that she played a role in that shift.
Listed below are a handful of ways
that Swift i nfluenced the evolution
of the genre, s ometimes on her own,
sometimes in tandem with other acts
or in lockstep with the culture as a
whole:
The audience grew younger. While country radio has long
embraced a wide 25-54 demographic as its target a udience, it
historically skewed toward the 35-plus s egment. Music Row

has wanted to lower the median age since at least the early 1980s, but it never
has been more successful than during Swift’s rise. One could argue, in fact,
that the bro-country fad — which temporarily brought in a ton of 25-34 listeners — might not have occurred if Swift hadn’t shown that younger listeners were open to country.
“She introduced a new age group to this format because of her sound and
because of her writing,” says Nash Network director of programming John
Shomby, who has been in Swift’s c orner since meeting her on her first radiopromotion tour when he was WGH Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Va., PD. “She
wrote for that specific age and was the first one to ever do that.”
Online metrics became a meaningful way to influence radio. Swift
established a MySpace page on Aug. 31, 2005 — the day before Big Machine
officially launched as a label — and she subsequently amassed more than 45
million streams through that site. Big Machine Label Group president/CEO
Scott Borchetta used that data to prove to skeptical stations that an audience
indeed existed for his artist. Employing social media and/or streaming service
info to prove an act’s viability to radio is now standard operating procedure.
Social media became a way to engage the audience. Swift figured
out quickly that cat photos and personal messages could demonstrate to her
audience that she is one of them. Instead of giving a story to media and p
 raying
that reporters would not only care, but convey her intended meaning, she went
straight to fans, flipping the process along the way. It doesn’t work for every
artist, but it does for many, who — like Swift — now put out their message on
social media and let traditional reporters take the story to a wider audience
after they have already left a trail.
Young women felt they had a voice. The number of females on the
country chart tailed off in recent years, an ironic development since Swift
i nspired so many younger women to put their inner world to music. Kelsea
Ballerini is the most obvious success story, though some of the other c ontenders
tried to duplicate Swift’s approach instead of using it as a guide.
“When we first started [the Song Suffragettes showcase] two years ago, we
jokingly called it ‘Taylor Swift-itus,’ ” says Cassetty. “Everybody was trying to
mimic her. That’s started to dissipate. I think a lot of young women are trying
to find their own voice now, but a lot of them were definitely inspired to pick
up a guitar because of Taylor Swift.”
Staging is more elaborate at many arena shows. Such acts as Kenny
Chesney, Brad Paisley, Shania Twain and Reba McEntire had previously
incorporated big production elements — like high-quality video, dancers and
overhead conveyors — into the concert experience, but no one has made it as
seamless and theatrical as Swift.
“She created an experience,” observes Shomby. “She definitely has had an
influence on what a live show looks like.”
The two-year album cycle became more of an industry standard. In
2006, the typical country act cranked out a new album every 12-18 months.
Swift has followed a 24-month cycle like clockwork, putting out a new project in
a late-October/early-November window every even-numbered year. Wait times
still vary, but two years looks more like the industry norm than it did before.
Country music now thinks globally. As a genre that’s native to the
United States, it was natural to consider America’s borders as the limit for
country. Some previous acts, such as Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton, thought
outside the box, but no one chased international territories more aggressively
than Swift, who even started a world tour in Singapore — hardly a bastion of
country heritage.
“They were thinking international very early on,” says Cassetty.
Leaving the format no longer carries the stigma it once did. Strident
country fans are angry about the direction of modern country, but recent Country Music Association research reaffirms what radio has known for a while: The
genre’s listeners engage in multiple formats. Where country radio once turned
its back on artists who “left the format” — Gary Morris took on an operatic
part in Les Miserables, and Restless Heart dared to release a pop-only single;
both saw their country careers dive — Swift was forthcoming about making
a pop album with 1989. Radio is different now, too. In the pre-consolidation
era, country programmers felt abandoned when a country artist targeted a
different audience. Now, the PD for a radio cluster simply finds Swift moving
from the country brand to another station in their portfolio. Swift hasn’t tried
to return to country, though many expect she eventually will, and it appears
to many that the door remains open to her.
“I don’t think anybody has faulted her for what she has done,” says Shomby.
“It was a natural progression, and I don’t think anybody would fault her for
coming back.”

Florida Georgia Line, the duo of Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, continues
to rule three of Billboard’s country songs charts with “H.O.L.Y” (Republic
Nashville).
The Nate Cyphert-, William Larsen- and busbee-penned first single from
FGL’s third studio full-length, Dig Your Roots (due Aug. 26), tops Billboard’s
airplay-, sales- and streaming-based Hot Country Songs chart (dated July 16)
for a ninth week. It also crowns Country Digital Songs for a ninth frame, up by
14 percent to 79,000 downloads sold in the week ending June 30, according to
Nielsen Music. Since bowing at the Country Digital Songs summit (May 21),
the track has moved 730,000 downloads to date. “H.O.L.Y.” additionally
leads Country Streaming Songs for a ninth week, up by
10 p
ercent to 6.9 million U.S. streams for the week. On
Country Airplay, the song pushes 5-4 with an 11 percent
increase to 39.9 million audience impressions.
FGL holds one of the most vaunted records in Hot C
 ountry
Songs history (dating to the chart’s 1958 inception as a
multimetric survey), as its debut single, “Cruise,” topped
the survey for an unprecedented 24 weeks in 2012-13.

CMA RESTRUCTURES VOTING
As the Country Music Association (CMA) sent out the first ballots on July 5
for its 50th annual awards, the organization hoped a new feature will reduce
the unseemly campaigning that accompanies the process.
The 2016 vote introduces Nominee Showcase, a centralized location for
the second and final ballots that will give backers of the nominees a chance
to attach vital information — such as statistics, credits, sound files and videos
— that members can access while making their decisions.
The move is intended to satisfy multiple issues. By providing a specific
locale for info about the nominees, it gives voters an easy-to-reference tool
for comparison and is expected to reduce the volume of solicitations CMA
members have typically received. It similarly cuts expenses for labels and
managers, since the new, free service is intended to eliminate the need for
costly email blasts and physical mailers. Additionally, it may give the electorate
better information in some of the less-publicized categories — particularly
musician of the year, where the candidates do not typically solicit votes and
the membership has not received information about their accomplishments
during the eligibility period.
CMA is offering a July 20 tutorial for nominees’ representatives, with the
second round of balloting slated for Aug. 15-24 and the final ballot set for Oct. 10.
Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood will host the 50th annual awards on
Nov. 2 on CBS. It will be the ninth straight time they have co-hosted the show.

NASHVILLE & NATIONAL TOM ROLAND
MUSIC NOTES
ON THIS DATE IN COUNTRY MUSIC
The Band Perry is the latest act affected
by heightened security issues. The group’s
July 3 concert at the Freeman Stage at
PAISLEY
Bayside in Selbyville, Del., was p
 ostponed
15 minutes before its scheduled start
following threats that were called into the box office. According to The
Wilmington News Journal, two men were agitated when they discovered the
show was sold out and began contemplating ways they could gain access,
including the use of firearms. Local media circulated photos of the suspects,
and one turned himself in to police on July 4. The concert has been rescheduled
for Aug. 17.
An Oct. 18 street date has been assigned for Without Getting Killed or Caught: The
Life and Music of Guy Clark. Written by his former publicist Tamara Saviano,
who also produced the album This One’s for Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark, the 406page effort was started in 2008 and finished this spring just days prior to his
May 17 death. More than 200 people were interviewed for the work, and Saviano
was also granted access to the journals of Clark’s wife, songwriter Susanna
Clark (“Come From the Heart,” “Easy From Now On”). Texas A&M University
Press is publishing the book as part of a series on Texas music.
Curb duo American Young will release its self-titled debut on Aug. 5 after
finishing the 12-song project with co-producer Lee Brice. The pair comprises
songwriter Jon Stone, who co-wrote Brice’s “A Woman Like You,” and Kristy
Osmunson, formerly one-half of the female duo Bomshel. The twosome
collectively wrote 11 of the album’s tracks.

Brad Paisley raised more than half his stated goal of $1 million within the
first six days of launching a GoFundMe page to help citizens in his native West
Virginia recover from a ghastly flood that hit the state on June 23. He seeded
the fund with a $100,000 personal donation and had earned $567,000 in
pledges from 5,305 people as of July 5. Paisley is unfortunately more familiar
with floods than he cares to be — the 2010 Nashville flood destroyed guitars
and equipment that he owned and forced his
crew to remake parts of the set for that year’s
tour at the last minute. Floods also impacted
the Midwest: classic country KFTI Wichita,
Kan., shut down during the weekend when
water in the station’s facility put the station’s
transmitter at risk. Waters were receding
July 5, though the station remained offline
that afternoon. Five Scripps/Wichita sister
stations remained in operation.

MAKIN’ TR ACKS TOM ROLAND [email protected]
The Last Bandoleros Hope To Travel Far
With ‘Where Do You Go?’
The first single in an artist’s career is crucial. It establishes a sonic baseline as the melodies were built. Those harmonies change from song to song —

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE

Ricky Skaggs
Raced To No. 1
He dominated Hot Country
Songs before making history
on the Bluegrass Albums chart
JULY 5, 2016 | PAGE 20 OF 20
On July 9, 1983, Ricky Skaggs’
“Highway 40 Blues” sped to No. 1 on
Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart,
marking his fifth consecutive No.
1. The Larry Cordle-penned track,
from Skaggs’ f irst Top C
 ountry
A lbums chart-topper, Highways and
Heartaches, won airplay thanks to
Skaggs’ love of bluegrass mixed
with radio-friendly hooks.
A master of many instruments,
Skaggs received his first mandolin
at age 5. By his teens, he, along
with now-deceased Keith Whitley, joined Ralph Stanley’s Clinch
Mountain Boys. Skaggs joined
Vince Gill and Patty Loveless to
perform Gill’s “Go Rest High on
That Mountain” at S
 tanley’s funeral
service last week (June 28).
A member of the Grand Ole Opry
since 1982 — the youngest ever at
the time — Skaggs has scored 11
No. 1s on Hot Country Songs and
four on Top Country Albums. He
has notched a record seven leaders
on Billboard’s Bluegrass Albums chart
(which launched in 2002), including
his most recent entry, 2013’s Cluck
Ol’ Hen: Live, with Bruce Hornsby.
