Satellite broadcaster SiriusXM and streaming services Pandora and Spotify will have official roles or adjunct events in conjunction with the June 9-12 gathering. And the festival’s signature concerts — four nights of Nissan Stadium shows with big video screens, elaborate lighting and such headliners as Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban and Jason Aldean — will be captured and condensed into an Aug. 3 ABC TV special, creating a multitiered entertainment vehicle that could never have been predicted in the event’s humble early days. “Technologically, the production has just changed so much,” says Conway Entertainment Group president Tony Conway, who produced the festival for 11 years as a volunteer CMA board member. “When we were at Municipal Auditorium [in the 1970s], they didn’t even have video screens, you know. I don’t think they had been invented yet.” The festival’s progression from its compact infancy in 1972 to a sprawling, multimillion-dollar operation in 2016 roughly parallels the advances in the technology that have enhanced the CMA Fest experience in modern times. The 45-rpm vinyl single was the primary medium for recorded-music sales in those early years when such artists as Loretta Lynn, Roy Acuff and the duo Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton were among the attractions. Cassettes and vinyl albums, of course, increasingly became the primary medium for country and shifted again to CDs, then to downloads. Now streaming is moving toward dominance. Like the 45, the festival — Fan Fair, as it was originally called — had a simple start, housed almost entirely at the 9,000-seat Municipal Auditorium, with exhibits and artist signings all taking place in the basement and the hallways around the building’s perimeter. The sound for the entire production was generated through a Shure Vocal Master PA, a 4-foot-by-5-foot BONSALL speaker stack that sat on the stage. “It sounded pretty crappy in there,” says Joe Bonsall, who has been to every CMA Fest since he joined The Oak Ridge Boys in October 1973. The official history says the first Fan Fair drew 5,000 fans, BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE though committee chair Jerry Bradley admitted years later that the real figure was significantly less. The Municipal audience, recalls former CMA executive director Ed Benson, skewed toward seniors, who arrived in organized tour buses and were able to comfortably navigate the air-conditioned confines. By 1982, the event had outgrown that venue. Urban Cowboy — accompanied by a brisk-selling, two-disc vinyl soundtrack — led a spike in country popularity that saw country acts like the Oaks, Willie Nelson and a solo Parton able to headline arenas on their own. Fan Fair moved to the Tennessee State Fairgounds, with a 17,000-seat outdoor venue, ample parking space and — at the top of a challenging hill — exhibit halls that lacked AC, but had enough room for autograph hunters. “It was kind of like the shift from the 8-track to the cassette,” notes Conway. “It was better, but it really wasn’t that great.” It was during that era that speaker technology improved and in-ear monitors were introduced. The video screen became relevant for the nightly concerts (though not particularly useful during the afternoon performances), and multiplatinum artists like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and Shania Twain made their first Fan Fair appearances. They attracted noticeably younger fans, while the fairgrounds itself was more favorable for an able-bodied audience. Attendance peaked around 25,000 people, but the venue’s limitations became a sore spot within the industry. CONWAY “The artists kept saying, ‘Look, if we’re going to do a free show in our hometown, the production value should be the best that it possibly can be, security should be the best, it should be in air conditioning,’ ” recalls Conway. “And we needed to take care of the fans, too. They didn’t need to be walking up and down these hills with un-air-conditioned buildings and waiting in line for hours and hours and hours.” Several options emerged: moving the event to a new speedway in rural Wilson County, going downtown once a new NFL stadium provided a larger venue or scrapping the festival entirely. The stadium option won out 15 years ago. The audience, now asked to tramp around to multiple venues during the day and to walk over a foot bridge for the stadium shows, is even younger. And the production is massive. Where the lighting once consisted of two trusses suspended over the Municipal stage, the stadium uses a 30-foot LED screen, 700 lights and gigantic speaker stacks. And those video screens allow interactivity with the audience as fans tweet messages from smartphones. “Technically and aesthetically, the event turned into a much bigger, nicer project,” says Conway. “So that made us a CD. It’s a little crisper and cleaner. Maybe it doesn’t have the warmth of the fairgrounds, but it’s digital.” That digital component is notable. The CMA Fest app lets fans plot their days and keep up with events occurring at multiple locations. And their smartphone cameras now allow them to blast the events of the day out to the world at large within minutes after the acts perform for more than 50,000 people. The difference between the mid-’70s Municipal shows and the instant effect in the current atmosphere was noticeable to Bonsall when the Oaks did a George Jones tribute at the stadium in 2013. “They put big George Jones pictures up on the screens, and we sang ‘Same Ole Me’; great response,” recalls Bonsall. “Nancy Jones came out onstage, and I swear to you, when we finished with all we had to do that night, we got on the bus and headed back for Hendersonville. That was on YouTube on my iPhone before I got home.” The continued upgrades — in both venue and technology — have made a difference in the audience. “It absolutely amazes me to go to Music Festival and see the coliseum full, but especially to get out and walk on the field and down through the seating area and see how unbelievably young the crowd is compared to where it was many years ago,” says Benson. A portion of that audience has probably felt the impact of that other change in CMA Music Fest. Fifty percent of the profits are now invested in music education, thus the 45-rpm edition of the event is actually streaming money — $10 million since 2006 — back to the community. “We’re past CDs,” says Conway. “I guess we’re just digital now.” JUNE 6, 2016 | PAGE 2 OF 21 Granger Smith visited with WGGY Scranton, Pa., assistant PD/music director Tanya Burko when he played the Scranton Cultural Center on May 10. BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 6, 2016 | PAGE 4 OF 21 ON THE CHARTS JIM ASKER [email protected] In The Black: Dierks Bentley Bows At No. 1 With Best Week Ever streaming data, Black lead single “Somewhere on a Beach” rebounds 5-2, having already topped the survey for three weeks, beginning April 30. It’s his 11th Hot Country Songs No. 1. “Different for Girls,” Bentley’s new single (featuring Elle King), bows on Hot Country Songs at No. 21. Fueled by 32,000 downloads sold, it vaults onto Country Digital Songs at No. 2. PERFECT FIT AT NO. 1 Thomas Rhett’s “T-Shirt” (Valory), written by Ashley Gorley, Luke Laird and Shane McAnally, becomes his fourth consecutive single, and sixth total (and sixth in succession as a lead artist), to reach the Country Airplay summit, rising 3-1 in its 19th week (46.6 million audience impressions, up 18 percent). “I can’t believe we’re sitting here talking about my fourth No. 1 in a row,” Rhett tells Billboard. “This one feels especially great, because I had this song in my back pocket for a couple of years and I convinced the songwriters to let me hang onto it.” “T-Shirt” follows Rhett’s previous Country Airplay leaders “Die a Happy Man” (six weeks at No. 1), “Crash and Burn” and “Make Me Wanna” (one each). “ ‘T-Shirt’ has performed really strong for us, with little burn,” notes WBWL Boston PD Lance Houston. On Hot Country Songs, “T-Shirt” rises 4-3, hitting a new high. The survey is led by Florida Georgia Line’s “H.O.L.Y.” (Republic Nashville) for a fifth week. RINGING UP ANOTHER TOP 10 Carrie Underwood’s “Church Bells” (19/ Arista Nashville) enters the Country Airplay top 10, rising 12-10 (28.9 million in audience, up 18 percent), marking her 24th consecutive song to reach the survey’s upper tier. All of her country singles promoted to the format, excluding holiday fare, have hit the top 10, beginning with “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” her first of 14 No. 1s in 2006. Underwood passes Faith Hill’s 23 top 10s for a solo share of the second-most among women dating to the chart’s Jan. 20, 1990, launch. Reba McEntire leads all women with 36 top 10s. BENTLEY: NINO MUÑOZ Dierks Bentley turns in the biggest sales week of his career, as his eighth studio album, Black (Capitol Nashville/Universal Music Group [UMG] Nashville), bounds in atop Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart (dated June 18), selling 88,000 copies in its launch sales week (ending June 2), according to Nielsen Music. On the all-genre, consumption-based Billboard 200, Black arrives at No. 2 with 101,000 equivalent albums (below Drake’s Views, at No. 1 with 152,000). Bentley’s No. 2 entrance on the Billboard 200 surpasses his prior high of No. 3 set by 2009’s Feel That Fire. In pure sales, Bentley reigns, debuting at No. 1 on Top Album Sales; his sum of 88,000 bests Beyoncé’s Lemonade (No. 2, 56,000). Black’s opening sales week surpasses Bentley’s preBENTLEY vious weekly best, set by 2006’s Long Trip Alone, which debuted at No. 1 on Top Country Albums with 82,000. “This is the album [Black] that I’ve been chasing my whole career,” Bentley tells Billboard. “The entire process, from the first lyrics to the album launch, was magic. But it also took focus and attention to the smallest of details. My team gave it everything they had, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.” About the LP’s opening week, Bentley adds, “Debuting at No. 1 is always great. The most records I’ve ever sold in a week … crazy. I’m very grateful to all the fans.” Produced by Ross Copperman, the 13-track Black is Bentley’s sixth Top Country Albums leader, all of which have arrived at the summit. “I remember meeting Dierks to hear Black for the first time,” says UMG Nashville president Cindy Mabe. “I had some concerns, and I know he felt some pressure to follow up his [2014] Riser album, which had really been a career album. Following up a career album is never easy. From the moment he played the title song, I was hooked. He went into the storyline of how one song led into another, and you could follow it from front to back. It’s pretty rare to see an artist, 13 years into his career, continue to take on new perspectives and push the limits creatively.” On the hybrid Hot Country Songs chart, which combines airplay, sales and BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE THIS WEEK LAST WEEK WKS ON CHART 1 l 3 2 JUNE 6, 2016 | PAGE 6 OF 21 Country Airplay AIRPLAY MONITORED BY AUDIENCE (IN MILLIONS) PLAYS TITLE Imprint/LabelArtist THIS WEEK +/– THIS WEEK +/– RANK 19 T-SHIRT V alory 46.630 +3.326 8382 581 1 1 13 CAME HERE TO FORGET W arner Bros./WMN Blake Shelton 43.172 -2.110 7727 -363 2 l 4 l 4 13 HUNTIN’, FISHIN’ & LOVIN’ EVERY DAY C apitol Nashville Luke Bryan 42.344 +1.974 7584 434 3 5 20 HUMBLE AND KIND M cGraw/Big Machine Tim McGraw 40.491 +2.255 7221 416 4 Dierks Bentley 35.960 -2.052 5806 -621 8 Keith Urban 35.452 +2.877 6269 530 5 Old Dominion 34.733 -8.637 6207 -1521 6 7 3 HH No. 1 (1 week) HH 5 6 20 SOMEWHERE ON A BEACH C apitol Nashville 6 l 8 10 WASTED TIME H it Red/Capitol Nashville 7 2 29 SNAPBACK R CA Nashville 8 l 9 l 1 l0 11 l 1 l2 13 l 14 l 15 l 1 l6 17 l 1 l8 19 l 20 l 21 l 2 l2 23 l 2 l4 25 l 26 l 27 l 2 l8 29 l 30 l 10 10 LIGHTS COME ON B roken Bow 9 23 MY CHURCH C olumbia Nashville 12 10 CHURCH BELLS 1 9/Arista Nashville 11 11 NOISE B lue Chair/Columbia Nashville 14 6 H.O.L.Y. LAST-MINUTE CMA FEST DEETS A series of concerts on the roof of a historic honky-tonk, inside shows that provide respite from the summer heat or an off-campus look at the fashionable tastes of a superstar with a pop-up store. Those are some of the last-minute choices Music Row executives, visiting radio programmers and foreign journalists converging on Nashville have to sort through as they make decisions about this week’s CMA Music Festival. The talent at the high-profile nightly concerts at Nissan Stadium June 9-12 — including Sam Hunt, Florida Georgia Line, Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert and Thomas Rhett — has been known for weeks, but a number of late changes and additions create new wrinkles for visitors looking for a different setting or a unique adventure. Among the events and updates: Carrie Underwood is a newly announced performer on the June 8 CMT Music Awards, which will also feature a mashup of Cassadee Pope, Leona Lewis and Pitbull. Also set for the smaller Firestone Stage are LoCash, Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris and Michael Ray. Historic Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge — noted as a tiny, back-in-the-day hangout for Willie Nelson, Marty Robbins and Kris Kristofferson — will host late-night concerts on the roof, presented by SoundsLikeNashville. com, June 8-11. Among the attractions: David Nail, Canaan Smith and Easton Corbin. Kelsea Ballerini and Jon Pardi top the bill for the Nash Country Kickoff Party on June 7 at the Cannery Ballroom, joined by Levi Hummon and Barrett Baber, a former finalist on NBC’s The Voice. Warner Music Nashville has hot dogs and apple pie as side attractions to a series of music events — some private, some public — at downtown club aVenue. Ryan Kinder, High Valley and a “special guest” play a June 8 CMT Awards afterparty, with Brandy Clark, Cole Swindell and Frankie Ballard also on the event schedule. Eric Church will open a pop-up store June 9-12 at 218 South 11th St., selling boots, a signature Gibson guitar and a furniture line that he designed. Big Machine plans a June 7 Whiskey Jam event at Loser’s that features Aaron Lewis, Maddie & Tae, Tucker Beathard, Brett Young and Tara Thompson. Decca U.K. has its own Whiskey Jam event the same night at Basement East with mostly non-country acts. A bevy of British and pop-division A&R execs will be in town for the showcase, which includes John & Jacob, Rhys Lewis and Kandace Springs. Gary Allan will be on hand June 8 when his retail store, The Label, holds a trunk show to feature clothing and jewelry developed by Allan, co-owner Gina Ketchum and custom designer Debe Dohrer. • • • Alpha Media/Amarillo (Texas) welcomed Robert “Cisco Kidd” Mueller as market manager, overseeing three stations, including country KGNC-FM. BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 6, 2016 | PAGE 11 OF 21 NASHVILLE & NATIONAL TOM ROLAND MUSIC NOTES ON THIS DATE IN COUNTRY MUSIC ABC series The Bachelorette gets a dose of country leading into the CMA Music Festival. Charles Kelley was scheduled to appear on the June 6 edition of the show, performing “The Only One Who Gets Me,” written specifically for his wife. The June 7 episode features Dan + Shay with their current single “From the Ground Up.” Other notable TV news includes the June 12 premiere of the CMT series Still the King, with Billy Ray Cyrus in a starring role. And Kellie Pickler brings four friends and family members — including her husband, songwriter Kyle Jacobs (“Dust,” “More Than a Memory”) — to Celebrity Family Feud, competing against a Lance Bassled team on June 26. Dolly Parton, Kristian Bush and Brandy Clark are onboard for two dif ferent online charit y campaigns. Parton donated a pair of autographed gold size-6 heels for an eBay auction that benefits Soles4Soles. The high bid here was KELLEY $1,000 midday on June 6. The auction runs through June 10. Bush and Clark join Demi Lovato, The Lumineers and others in the annual #MusiCaresChallenge, encouraging fans to post a photo or video using their favorite album and donate to MusiCares, the music-industry healthcare program. Another Randy Travis sighting as the 2016 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee continues to rebound from a 2013 stroke. This time, Travis was a surprise onstage visitor during Kenny Chesney’s June 4 concert at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, appearing as Chesney covered Travis’ “Diggin’ Up Bones.” Other acts on the bill came back out to perform with Chesney: Miranda Lambert joined him on “The Fireman”; Old Dominion’s Brad Tursi and Matthew Ramsey returned during “Save It for a Rainy Day,” a song they co-wrote; and Jake Owen teamed with Chesney on “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy.” Big & Rich have shot a video touting a new Ally Financial splurge alert app, which warns shoppers that they’ve entered a store where they tend to overspend. Customers are encouraged to identify items they have a weakness for and to enlist friends to help them resist. It’s appropriate — Big Kenny wrote the Tim McGraw hit “Last Dollar (Fly Away)” when he was $140,000 in debt and had less than $200 in cash left. Even if you can’t play piano, this couldn’t be more digging our roots.” RYAN SMITH Florida Georgia Line Connects New Sonic Dots With ‘H.O.L.Y.’ BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 6, 2016 | PAGE 16 OF 21 THE STARK REPORT PHYLLIS STARK [email protected] Life After Radio: Former PD Boesen Now Flying High As A Pilot Country radio veteran Ken Boesen has enjoyed f lying as a hobby for two decades, but after getting merged out of a job at WKIS Miami last summer following a station swap that transferred ownership from Beasley Broadcasting to CBS Radio, he decided to make his hobby a profession. Boesen is now a fulltime pilot for the regional carrier partner of a major airline. After departing WKIS, which he had programmed for nearly eight years, Boesen was giving flying lessons to keep himself busy, continuing something he had done for fun for about BOESEN 15 years. “I started looking at aviation as a career and discovered that the airlines are in a huge growth period right now,” he says. “A huge number of airlines are hiring a huge number of pilots. So as far as the time to break into aviation as a career, it’s a fantastic time to do that.” He began three months of training in F ebruary, i ncluding working in simulators and on real planes. During that time he also earned his Air Transport Pilot Certificate and joined the Air Line Pilots A ssociation union, noting with a laugh that he’s probably one of the few people in the world who is a member of both ALPA and the Country Music Association. In May, he started his job as a first officer for the a irline. While Boesen still lives in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., his flight base is New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport. He jokes, “Handy, right? A nybody who complains about, ‘Oh, I’ve got a 40 minute commute,’ stop it.” He hops other flights as a passenger to get to work. As a newcomer to the profession, says Boesen, “I’m breaking into somebody else’s business. I wasn’t the low man on the totem pole anymore in radio, but in aviation, yep, I’m a junior pilot.” So while others were enjoying the long Memorial Day weekend, Boesen’s schedule included “flying around here or there and stop and go again, stop and go again, all weekend long.” His current schedule involves five or six days a week on duty, flying four to six flights a day on a Dash 8 turboprop aircraft that seats between 37 and 50 people. He’s also the owner of a Mooney 231 aircraft, but says flying for a l iving has, unfortunately, somewhat dampened his longtime interest in f lying recreationally, at least for now. Prior to his surprising career change, Boesen had worked in the radio business for more than 25 years, landing his first full-time job in the industry in 1988. He left WKIS in June 2015. And while he loves flying, calling the c areer change “an exciting, new thing to me,” there’s still plenty he misses about radio, most notably the relationships and camaraderie. “It’s no secret radio folks can be a colorful bunch, and I have dozens and dozens of lifelong friends,” he says, noting that he misses those vibrant characters “on a daily basis,” along with the relationships withcountry artists. Unsurprisingly, he says flying for a living bears no resemblance whatsoever to Dierks Bentley’s party-on-board “Drunk on a Plane” music video. “You climb up in the cockpit, and you close the door,” he says. “You talk to the passengers, but there’s not much two-way communication unless the flight attendant calls. You are in a state of concentration up there. There’s very specific rules that you’ve got to follow from before you start the engine to the m oment you pull into the gate: how you fly, exactly what path and how fast, and how everything works is exact every time.” From his new perspective in the cockpit, Boesen also offers some advice for nervous fliers. “When you get in turbulence [and are] bouncing around a bit and people start wincing and grabbing onto the arms of the seats and getting scared, [remember that] it’s a roller coaster. It’s not going to break, so smile and enjoy the ride. If you feel so inclined, put both arms in the air and go, ‘Whoo.’ Aviation in the United States, especially, is so safe. There’s double and triple redundancy on the systems, the airplanes are so well-maintained, the t raining is so good, and we practice every contingency over and over until every person gets it down exactly right every time. So it’s safe. It’s really safe.” Country UPDATE THE COUNTRY MUSIC INDUSTRY’S MUST-HAVE SOURCE FOR NEWS, ANALYSIS AND CHART INFO EVERY MONDAY AND THURSDAY Get your message front and center with top country radio programmers and other key music influencers TO ADVERTISE, CONTACT: Lee Ann Photoglo, 615-376-7931, [email protected] BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 6, 2016 | PAGE 17 OF 21 Country Indicator THIS WEEK LAST WEEK WKS ON CHART l 2 l 3 l 4 l 1 13 HUNTIN’, FISHIN’ & LOVIN’ EVERY DAY C apitol Nashville 3 4 5 TITLE Imprint/LabelArtist AUDIENCE (IN MILLIONS) PLAYS THIS WEEK +/– THIS WEEK HH No. 1 (4 weeks) HH Luke Bryan 4749 +33 9.023 18 T-SHIRT V alory Thomas Rhett 4609 +29 8.660 20 HUMBLE AND KIND M cGraw/Big Machine Tim McGraw 4459 +10 8.473 5 10 WASTED TIME H it Red/Capitol Nashville Keith Urban 4245 +175 7.737 2 13 CAME HERE TO FORGET W arner Bros./WMN Blake Shelton 4003 -637 7.580 6 l 7 11 NOISE B lue Chair/Columbia Nashville Kenny Chesney 3706 +139 6.759 7 6 21 MY CHURCH C olumbia Nashville Maren Morris 3642 -143 7.005 3562 +185 6.498 HH Most Increased Plays HH Jason Aldean 3549 +400 6.463 +300 6.300 1 8 l 9 l 10 l 11 l 12 l 13 l 14 l 15 l 16 l 17 l 18 l 9 17 RECORD YEAR EMI Nashville Eric Church 11 10 LIGHTS COME ON B roken Bow 12 10 CHURCH BELLS 1 9/Arista Nashville Carrie Underwood 3424 10 38 HEAD OVER BOOTS C apitol Nashville Jon Pardi 3294 +67 6.056 14 6 H.O.L.Y. McCall’s “Convoy” rolled to No. 1 in four frames. The Stephony Smith-penned track from McGraw’s album E verywhere topped the chart for six weeks and went on to win vocal event of the year honors from the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. “Love” reigned after McGraw and Hill had married on Oct. 6, 1996. They have three daughters: G racie Katherine , Maggie Elizabeth and Audrey Caroline. The couple have since charted four more collaborations on Hot Country Songs, all of which reached the top 10; the most recent, “Meanwhile Back at Mama’s,” hit No. 7 in 2014. McGraw has earned 52 career top 10s and 26 No. 1s on the chart, with “Humble and Kind” having led in April. Hill has achieved 23 top 10s, including nine No. 1s. —JIM ASKER McGraw (left) and Hill performed together at the International Country Music Fan Fair festival in Nashville in June 1997.
