BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE

Nash Programmer John Shomby Adjusts
To Music City Pace, ‘New Cumulus’
On April 14, Cumulus CEO Mary Berner swept into Nashville
and dropped a bomb on one of the company’s highest-profile
properties. Country Weekly, a magazine that had been in print
for 22 years, was shut down in favor of a rebranded digital-only
outlet, NashCountryDaily.com. In the process, more than half
the publication’s staff was let go.
Oddly enough, the moment was reassuring to one of C umulus’ newest executives,
Nash Network director of p
 rogramming
John Shomby, only in his seventh week on
the job. Berner could have easily delegated
the unpleasant task of telling people they
have no job to someone else. Instead, she
delivered the news herself, confirming for
Shomby what he thought of Cumulus when
he took his new position.
“That speaks volumes about what this
company is all about now,” says Shomby. “I
mean, not a lot of companies do that, but
SHOMBY
she did it, and I thought that was extremely
impressive.
“It’s a brand-new Cumulus,” he continues. “It really focuses
on the people, and that’s a real important draw for me.”
Important indeed. Employed by Cumulus in Michigan and
Georgia during the 1990s and early 2000s, Shomby spent the
last 13 years with Max Media/Norfolk-Virginia Beach (Va.),
where he was director of programming for a five-station cluster,
including country WGH-FM. His family had established roots
in the community, and he felt safe in the job.
Shomby had turned down opportunities to rejoin C
 umulus
before. But when discussions with Cumulus senior vp c ontent
and programming Mike McVay started up this time, things were
different. Berner had said publicly she intended to decentralize
the company, providing its employees more o pportunity to
utilize their skills. Plus, the job was a new
one that put Shomby in charge of several
syndicated radio products: America’s Morning Show, Nash Nights Live (NNL), Kickin’ It
With Kix, numerous c ountry s pecials and the
daily Nash prep service, which provides content for morning shows.
Cumulus had established a state-of-theart studio for those operations with an eye
toward synergizing them all. But no one was
overseeing them as a unit on-site.
“There were a lot of spinning plates that spun
and broke,” says Shomby. “When Mike laid out
the position for me, he said, ‘We need someone
in that building to lead, to kind of point people in
a direction, because no one’s really been there every day with them.’ ”
It’s quite the leap, from cluster to network, though it still
uses a skill set that Shomby has put to work for years. That’s
particularly true in talent coaching, a key part of every PD’s
job. In this case, it reunites Shomby with one of his former employees — A
merica’s Morning Show host Blair Garner was an
on-air talent when Shomby programmed top 40 KAFM Dallas-
MAY 9, 2016 | PAGE 2 OF 22
Fort Worth (now classic-rock KZPS) in the 1980s. But it also means he’s overseeing some well-established names. G
arner has hosted national daily shows
for more than a decade; NNL host Shawn Parr spent years at country stations
KZLA and KKGO Los Angeles, and still voices the Academy of Country Music
Awards, the American Music Awards and the Golden Globes; and Kix Brooks
is celebrating his 10-year anniversary as host of American Country Countdown.
Each of them has a distinct approach, evident in the way they conduct artist
interviews. It’s Shomby’s job to tinker without tampering.
“Blair, Chuck Wicks and Kelly Ford want to have a little fun with them, so
we’ll stick them in the Truth Booth, we’ll have them do a Fake-a-Song Friday
or something along that line,” says Shomby. “With Nash Nights Live, because
it’s a very [top 40-oriented] type of presentation, we try to keep answers to
the questions short and to the point so that we can carry it through a couple
segments. And Kix is obviously a storyteller. He knows the background on a lot
of these people, so he knows how to ask a question from an artist s tandpoint.
So we have the three different moods of interview with these guys.”
The new job is extraordinarily collaborative. Cumulus vp country Charlie
Cook oversees a huge percentage of the stations that run the Nash properties,
so there’s plenty of interaction between the two Nashville offices. Westwood
One senior director radio syndication affiliate sales Donny Walker works in
the Nash building, and Shomby hears directly from numerous affiliates about
how the Nash brands fit into their local game plans.
Managing the music for all those affiliates has been the biggest p
 rogramming
hurdle thus far. Adding a single to the playlist too soon means putting a song on
the radio that might not be played elsewhere on a station with a c onservative
music policy.
“In particular with America’s Morning Show, I’ve got to make sure we’re not
throwing a lot of unfamiliar music out there in morning drive,” notes Shomby.
“That’s the whole point. Since we are providing this to a number of radio
stations, we want to make sure that it doesn’t stray too far from the center.”
Shomby’s family has remained in Virginia so his daughter doesn’t have to
change high schools for her senior year, thus he’s work-intensive in the early
part of his new life. But adjusting to the opportunities in Nashville, country’s
epicenter, has already presented a challenge.
“If I wanted to, I could be out every night, seven days a week until midnight
and later than that seeing music,” he says. “You really have to catch hold of
yourself. The first two weeks I was running everywhere, and I realized I have
to slow down just because there is this thing I have called a job during the
day that I have to do, and I want to make sure that I’m a little alert for that.”
Meanwhile, NashCountryDaily.com went live May 6. Shomby is not in
charge of that property — it’s still guided by editor-in-chief Lisa Konicki — but
the digital format allows more collaboration from Shomby’s team via podcasts,
stories and audio/video elements.
“When this all happened, two of the personalities stepped up and said,
‘What can we do?’ ” recalls Shomby, underscoring the team mentality that he
has been asked to enhance. “We’re definitely working together.”

FGL Flies To No. 1 On Hot Country
Songs; Bentley’s ‘Beach’ Blankets Radio
“H.O.L.Y.” (Republic Nashville), the new single from Florida Georgia Line
(Tyler Hubbard, Brian Kelley), vaults 39-1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs
chart (dated May 21). Written by Nate Cyphert, William Larsen and busbee
(aka Michael Busbee), “H.O.L.Y.” (named from the song’s “high on loving
you” chorus) is the first single from FGL’s third studio full-length, Dig Your
Roots, due in August.
On Country Digital Songs, “H.O.L.Y.” enters at the summit with 125,000
downloads in its first week (ending May 5), according to
Nielsen Music. It also starts atop Country Streaming Songs
with 5.8 million first-week U.S. streams. Following its first
full week of airplay, “H.O.L.Y.” bumps 26-25 on Country
Airplay, up 6 percent to 10.7 million in audience.
The track’s 39-1 vault on Hot Country Songs is the thirdgreatest in the history of the chart (which launched as an allencompassing genre survey in October 1958) and F
 lorida
Georgia Line’s second-best. Jason Aldean’s “Burnin’ It
Down” scorched 42-1 in its second week (Aug. 9, 2014),
leading for 14 weeks total. FGL’s “Dirt” ranks second,
having leapt 40-1, also in its second week (July 26, 2014).
(Why does “H.O.L.Y.” make such a jump? It debuted on
the May 14 tally due only to its first two-plus days of airplay
following its April 29 arrival, as the Hot Country Songs
BENTLEY
chart’s airplay tracking week runs Monday-Sunday. Sales
and streaming are measured Friday-Thursday, however,
so the song soars to No. 1 on Hot Country Songs with the addition of its first
week of those two metrics.)
In addition, the track’s two-week trip to No. 1 on Hot Country Songs is the
fastest since Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” crowned the chart in
its second frame (Nov. 21, 2015).
“H.O.L.Y.” is FGL’s fifth Hot Country Songs No. 1. Its first, “Cruise,” holds
the record for the lengthiest stay on top: 24 weeks (2012-13). Notably, “H.O.L.Y.”
marks a maturity in the pair’s sound. “Seth England, our manager, sent us the
song, and we knew it was a big one,” FGL’s Tyler Hubbard tells Billboard. “We
just weren’t sure it was for us. After listening a lot, we knew it was the exact

irection we wanted to go. There were three instances where our wives asked
d
us about ‘H.O.L.Y.,’ and when we said we were considering it for FGL, they said
we had to cut it. We feel like the song is anointed.”
Says Big Machine Label Group executive vp/Republic Nashville president
Jimmy Harnen, “As we all know, music and art are subjective; beauty is in the
eye of the beholder. Artists, managers and record executives have a responsibility
to find music that inspires and moves people, because art that doesn’t sell is
an obsession with a storage problem ... When we played
‘H.O.L.Y.’ for country radio programmers and fans in the
months prior to release, it completely connected with them,
evoking huge emotion and reaction.”
BENTLEY BEACHES AT NO. 1 Dierks Bentley achieves his
14th Country Airplay leader, as “Somewhere on a Beach”
(Capitol Nashville) rises 2-1 (49.9 million, up 8 percent).
The song is the lead single from his eighth s tudio set,
Black, due May 27.
“ ’Somewhere on a Beach’ is setting up our summer just
like we wanted, putting the fans in the mood to party,” says
Bentley. “It’s hard to believe that it’s my 14th No. 1, and
I’m blown away at the reception of the new music. I can’t
wait to start peeling back more layers from the album.”
MILESTONE Kenny Chesney’s “Noise” (Blue Chair/
Columbia Nashville) rises 12-10 (26.6 million, up 2 percent) to become his
landmark 50th Country Airplay top 10. In the chart’s 26-year history (dating
to its Jan. 20, 1990, launch), he trails only George Strait (61), Tim McGraw
(55) and Alan Jackson (51).
McBRIDE RETURNS As Chris Stapleton’s Traveller (Mercury/Universal Music
Group Nashville) leads Top Country Albums for a 20th week (25,000 sold),
Martina McBride’s Reckless (Nash Icon/Big Machine Label Group) debuts at
No. 2 (16,000). She scores her 11th top 10 and first since Everlasting debuted
as her fifth No. 1 in April 2014.

COUNTRY’S SHAKIN’ IN MONEYMAKERS
Country artists own eight of the 40 positions on Billboard’s annual ranking
of music’s highest-paid musicians, a list that’s ruled by a pop star who began
her career in country.
Taylor Swift is credited with $73.5 million in income during 2015,
easily outdistancing the field. Her touring receipts alone — an estimated
$61.7 million — would have landed her at No. 1, more than $20 million ahead
of the nearest competitor. That No. 2 position is held by Kenny Chesney, who
raked in a cool $39.8 million, according to estimates, just ahead of The Rolling
Stones at $39.6 million. Luke Bryan is the genre’s only other act in the top
10, landing at No. 7, thanks to a $23.1 million revenue stream.
The other countr y ar tists on the list are Jason Aldean (No. 11,
$18.9 million), Shania Twain (No. 12, $14.4 million), Florida Georgia Line
(No. 19, $11.5 million), Eric Church (No. 23, $10.1 million), Brad Paisley
(No. 35, $6.8 million) and Toby Keith (No. 38, $6.5 million).

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE
MAY 9, 2016 | PAGE 16 OF 22
MAKIN’ TR ACKS TOM ROLAND [email protected]
One of the bedrock, yin-yang foundations of country music — the S
 aturday-night
sinner and Sunday-morning saint — is really about the coping m
 echanisms
one uses to get through life and the loss that goes with it.
With the release of “Savior’s Shadow,” Blake Shelton firmly inhabits
both sides of that Saturday/Sunday equation. Much of his public persona
has been built on winking nods to the Saturday-night solution, with alcohol
weaving through such songs as “Sangria,” “Neon Light” and current single
“Came Here to Forget.”
“Savior’s Shadow,” the final track on his forthcoming album If I’m H
 onest
(May 20, Warner Bros.), ref lects on the Sunday part. It’s a 21st-century
hymn, a humble piece of assurance that a higher power really does offer
guidance and comfort. Warner Music Nashville released it to country and Christian radio via Play MPE
on April 11, though it wasn’t part of the typical chart
strategy in his career.
“I’m not trying to get a No. 1 song out of this,” says
Shelton. “I just feel like it needs to be shared with
everybody. I feel like people need to be aware of this
song for whatever it might mean to them.”
“Savior’s Shadow” has enormous meaning for
S helton. It was the residue from a dream he had at
his home in O
klahoma in May 2015. The events of
the dream were immediately forgotten, but four lines
of lyrics and melody were clear as day. He grabbed
his smartphone and sang the passage into the memo
f unction before it was lost.
It was a difficult period in his life. His relationship
with then-wife Miranda Lambert was crumbling, and
the words — “I feel the rain, I hear the thunder/As He
SHELTON
cries for me” — became a powerful source of strength.
“That’s when it became apparent that, you know,
things weren’t going to work out with my marriage,” he says. “We both knew
that it wasn’t going to work out, and I was walking around, randomly s inging
that song to myself, and somehow it would make me feel better. At first I
thought it was that I’m so sad and pitiful that even God feels sorry for me
and He’s crying for me. And then I thought, ‘No, it’s just that He’s on this
journey with me and He’s walking with me.’ ”
That July, the same month that they divorced, Shelton made an effort at
his Los Angeles residence to finish “Savior’s Shadow.”
“I just knew that it came to me for a reason,” he says. “I had to do something
with it.”
But progress was fleeting at best. Finally, he turned to songwriter Jessi
Alexander (“I Drive Your Truck,” “The Climb”), with whom he had co-written
“Friends” for the movie Angry Birds (due May 20) in March 2015. Ironically,
Alexander and her songwriter husband, Jon Randall (“Drink On It,” “Whiskey
Lullaby”), were experiencing their own potentially traumatic change: moving
into a new house.. She had just stepped into the home, ahead of Randall and
the movers, carrying boxes into the empty dwelling, when she received a text
from Shelton: “Sis, I need your help again.” Alexander knew instinctively that
he had a song idea, and she immediately made herself available.
“He texted, ‘What are you doing?’ ” she recalls. “And I’m like, ‘Nothing.’ ”
Shelton sent her the short “Savior’s Shadow” voice memo, and she was
struck by its raw vulnerability.
“It was so gut-wrenching and beautiful, like the most pure prayer,” she
says. “So J.R. walks in the door, and he’s asking me where to put the couch
and the boxes, and I got tears in my eyes. I’m like, ‘Well, we have to help
Blake finish this song.’ ”
It became sort of a tag-team affair. Alexander worked on the song while
Randall brought in more possessions. When she ran into a wall, he picked
up on the writing while she turned her attention to the house. Since it was a
gospel song, it offered sweet irony: At the same time they were unpacking
those cardboard boxes, they were working outside their usual creative boxes,
u nconcerned about how a predefined audience might receive its tempo or
unconventional phrases.
“We didn’t have to deal with that,” says Randall. “Blake really felt the
song, and sometimes those songs — even if they don’t get recorded — they’re
still the most special songs you ever wrote.”
Calling on their own experiences with church music, Randall and A lexander
gave it the chorus it needed. They instinctively matched the rain and the
thunder from Shelton’s verse with majestic mountains
and oceans in the final stanza, and Alexander gave
it one last twist. The chorus typically ended with
“Standing in my savior’s shadow where I’m supposed
to be,” but she tagged one more line, “Standing in my
savior’s shadow, I’m who I’m supposed to be.”
“ ‘I’m who I’m supposed to be,’ for me, conjures up
a bigger picture,” explains Alexander. “I’m kind, I’m
patient, I’m a survivor, I’m humble, I’m powerful, I’m
a forgiver. It’s like I’ve got the traits that God gave me,
that I’m the way I’m supposed to be.”
They texted back and forth with Shelton throughout
the day and got the final voice memo with Shelton
singing the entire song while they were standing in
the kitchen.
“What a way to bless the new house,” says Randall.
A few weeks later, Shelton f lew into Nashville
w ithout telling the rest of his team for a quick demo
session that Randall booked at Zac Brown’s Southern
Ground recording studio on Aug. 20. Engineer
Brandon Bell captured all three writers harmonizing over Randall’s Martin
guitar. When Shelton played that demo to p
 roducer Scott Hendricks (Dan
+ Shay, Jana Kramer), Hendricks decided to use Randall’s guitar to gird
the final recording.
“Every studio musician has an array of guitars that sound differently,”
says Hendricks, “but this particular guitar, whatever it was or however his
was recorded, I love the sound of it. So I took it and, between myself and
another guy, edited it to make it feel a lot better.”
Hendricks cut Shelton’s final vocal back at Shelton’s home in Los A ngeles
— the third house he has been given while working on NBC’s The Voice. For
this album, the vocals were all done in a walk-in closet for best effect.
“It’s a pretty nice closet, I will say,” adds Hendricks with a laugh. “But
it didn’t matter. I mean, we were haulin’ and he was comfortable. That’s
what mattered.”
Returning to Nashville, Hendricks captured new harmonies from R
 andall
and Alexander, and he invited Randall to visit while he recorded a string
section — arranged by Charlie Judge — at Ocean Way. It was an appropriate
setting: a former church with an array of stained-glass windows to underscore
the s piritual solace in “Savior’s Shadow.” The final touch came with Russ
Pahl, who overdubbed bittersweet steel notes on top of the whole production.
Thanks to his party-boy image, even Shelton knows some fans will r esist
his gospel song —
“I can, on some level, understand a pushback,” he concedes
— but plenty of people who are able to see the Saturday/Sunday connotations
in their own lives have been moved to tears by the sincerity of Shelton’s
p erformance and the resilience that it represents.
“This is from a different place,” says Shelton. “I feel like that song helped
save my life.”
